For most home networks, Cat6 is enough for 1GbE. Choose Cat6A for a new copper run that needs 10GbE across a channel up to 100 m; Cat6 can carry 10GBASE-T over shorter qualifying links. Cat8 is intended chiefly for short, high-speed channels—not as a general-purpose upgrade for ordinary home internet. The right choice depends on your equipment’s Ethernet ports, the full cable-channel length, and whether you are installing permanent wiring or buying a patch cable.
Compare Cat6, Cat6A, and Cat8
Cat6, Cat6A, and Cat8 are cable categories. 1GbE, 10GbE, and 25/40GbE describe Ethernet applications. A category’s frequency rating is not a promised data rate: the application, cable channel, components, installation, and equipment at both ends determine what a link can support.
| Category | Maximum frequency in Fluke Networks’ comparison | Applications listed | Practical home use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cat6 | 250 MHz | 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T, and 10GBASE-T up to 35 m | A suitable choice for common 1GbE links; it can support 10GbE on shorter qualifying links. |
| Cat6A | 500 MHz | 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T, and 10GBASE-T over a 100 m channel | The straightforward copper choice for a new 10GbE run up to 100 m. |
| Cat8 | 2000 MHz | 10BASE-T through 10GBASE-T, plus 25/40GBASE-T up to 30 m | A specialized option for short channels where compatible high-speed equipment can use it; rarely a useful generic home upgrade. |
These frequency and application figures are from Fluke Networks’ Network Engineer Tools and Troubleshooting Guide. Its Cat8 fact sheet gives a 24 m maximum permanent-link length and a 30 m channel length for 25/40Gbps, and says Cat8 supports 10Gbps and lower over a full 100 m channel. The fact sheet identifies ANSI/TIA-568-C.2-1 as published in November 2016. These are Fluke Networks’ summaries; consult the applicable current standards or a qualified installer when a project needs standards-level specifications.

Choose by the Ethernet speed you actually need
For ordinary 1GbE home links, use Cat6
If the relevant router, switch, computer, or other endpoint has a 1GbE port, Cat6 supports that application and is a reasonable default for a new home cable run. A faster-rated cable cannot make a 1GbE port negotiate a faster Ethernet connection.

For a new 10GbE run up to 100 m, choose Cat6A
When you are installing permanent copper wiring and want 10GBASE-T across a channel up to 100 m, Cat6A is the clear choice in Fluke Networks’ comparison. It avoids relying on Cat6’s shorter 10GBASE-T distance limit.
For a shorter 10GbE link, Cat6 may be enough
Fluke Networks lists Cat6 for 10GBASE-T up to 35 m. That is a maximum in its comparison, not a guarantee that every existing Cat6 run will work at 10GbE: the full channel, connectors, installation quality, and tested performance matter.

Consider Cat8 only for a short, compatible high-speed link
Cat8 is relevant when the endpoints support the higher application rate and the link fits its short-channel limits. Fluke Networks lists a 30 m maximum channel for 25/40GBASE-T (with a 24 m permanent link in its fact sheet). Its 2000 MHz frequency rating does not mean a Cat8 cable delivers 40Gbps at any distance.
Account for the whole channel, not just the cable in the wall
A channel is the complete connection between the active devices, including the permanent cable and connecting hardware. The channel length and the performance of all its components matter. For an installation intended to meet a category, use cable and connecting hardware that meet the relevant requirements, install them correctly, and have the finished link tested with an appropriate compliant field tester. A jacket marking alone does not prove that a completed run meets category limits.

- Permanent home wiring: Keep the cable, jacks, patch panel, and other components appropriate to the category you are targeting. If certification matters, arrange testing against the relevant limits with a compliant field tester.
- Short, replaceable patch cable: Base the choice on the port speeds and application you need. Buying a higher category will not upgrade the router, switch, or endpoint.
- DIY checks: A basic continuity checker can identify some wiring faults, but it should not be treated as category certification. Certification requires testing the link against relevant limits with a compliant field tester.
Check compatibility and installation before buying
Cat8 uses the familiar 8-position modular connector commonly called RJ45, and its connector form is designed for backward compatibility with structured-cabling connectors from Cat5e through Cat6A. That physical compatibility does not make older network equipment capable of 25/40GbE; the active devices still set the available Ethernet rate.
For permanent wiring, plan the cable and matching termination hardware together. Cat6A cable should be paired with suitable Cat6A components, and the same principle applies to Cat8. Installation and testing determine whether the finished link meets its intended category; choosing cable based on a product label alone is not proof of compliance.

Use this decision checklist
- Check the ports. Identify the Ethernet application and port speeds on both ends of the link. If both ends are 1GbE, Cat6 is sufficient for that application.
- Measure the intended channel. For 10GBASE-T, Cat6 is listed up to 35 m; for a new run intended to support it over a 100 m channel, choose Cat6A.
- Decide whether the cable is permanent or replaceable. For in-wall wiring, select matching cable and termination components and plan for testing. For a short patch lead, choose for the devices and application rather than the largest category number.
- Use Cat8 only when the application calls for it. The cited 25/40GBASE-T channel limit is 30 m, and the equipment must support the target rate.
- Arrange the right test if compliance matters. Ask for testing with a compliant field tester against the relevant category limits; continuity alone is not certification.
