Use a clone to move a working system or selected partitions to another disk, such as when replacing a hard drive with an SSD. Create a disk image when you want a backup file to restore later or a series of recovery points. A clone can erase data on its destination, so confirm the target disk before starting.

How cloning and imaging differ

Decision Clone Disk image
What you create Selected partitions copied directly to another physical disk, uncompressed. Macrium describes cloning and imaging. A compressed image file saved to storage and restored later. Macrium describes the image workflow.
Typical purpose Move a working installation to a replacement or upgraded disk, including an HDD-to-SSD migration. Macrium’s cloning page. Keep backups and recovery points for later. Full, differential, and incremental images can capture different points in time. Macrium’s backup overview and Reflect’s explanation of backup types.
Where it goes Another disk, whose existing contents may be deleted during cloning. Macrium’s warning. A storage location that holds the image files. Restoring a chain depends on having its required files available. Reflect’s restore guidance.
History retained A copy of the selected disk state at the time you clone it; it is not a sequence of image recovery points. Reflect’s backup-chain explanation. Full images with later differential or incremental images can form a backup chain. Reflect’s backup-chain explanation.

Which should you choose?

Choose a clone for a disk replacement or migration

Cloning is the more direct choice when you are moving a working installation to a new disk. Macrium identifies HDD-to-SSD migration and moving between hard drives as cloning use cases. Its cloning page also describes resizing partitions when cloning to a larger target. Do not assume every smaller disk will work: the selected data and partition layout must fit.

Choose an image for ongoing recovery

An image is a saved backup file, rather than a direct copy to a replacement disk. It suits a plan that keeps recovery points over time: a full image can be followed by differential or incremental images containing later changes. For a restore from a chain, retain the full image and the relevant subsequent files together.

Use both when the jobs differ

A clone can handle a one-time migration, while image backups provide separate recovery points for ongoing protection. They solve different problems; a clone is not a substitute for an image history.

Before cloning, protect the destination

  • Identify the source and destination disks by their details, not just by their position in a list.
  • Save any files on the destination that matter elsewhere first. Macrium warns that cloning is destructive and may delete destination partitions. Read Macrium’s cloning warning.
  • Check that the destination has enough usable capacity for the partitions and data you intend to copy.
  • If the clone must boot Windows, include the system partitions needed by that computer’s configuration. Macrium’s guidance says those partitions must be copied for Windows to boot; exact requirements vary by setup. See Reflect’s cloning guidance.

Plan how you will store and restore images

Choose storage with enough room for the image files you intend to keep. The exact capacity depends on the data and backup plan; no single capacity is established for every setup. Keep the files needed for a backup chain available together, and verify that the set is usable for restoration. An image stored only on the disk that fails will not help recover that disk.

Will a cloned disk boot from USB?

Do not assume so. A Macrium article published on 22 November 2016 says a USB-connected clone must be attached to a motherboard SATA port to boot. That is historical, context-specific guidance, not a guarantee about every current PC, Windows version, or connection method. Check the behavior of your exact setup before relying on an external USB clone as a boot disk. Read Macrium’s historical comparison.
