Choose a MacBook if you regularly work in more than one place, an iMac if you want a fixed desk with a built-in display, or a Mac mini if you want a fixed desktop and prefer to select or reuse your own monitor. Before deciding, match the exact model generation to your display needs, connections, and the cost of the complete workspace.

Start with where you work

Choose a MacBook for work in multiple locations

A MacBook brings its display, keyboard, trackpad, and battery with it, so it can serve as a complete workspace away from your desk. The cited 13-inch MacBook Air M5 (2026) weighs 2.7 lb (1.23 kg) and has a 13.6-inch display. Apple estimates up to 18 hours of video streaming or up to 15 hours of wireless web use; these are test-based estimates, and actual battery life varies by use and configuration. Apple’s M5 MacBook Air technical specifications give the model-specific details.

Choose an iMac for a display-led permanent desk

An iMac integrates the computer and display in one desktop setup, avoiding the need to select a separate monitor. The documented example is the 24-inch, four-port iMac with M4, introduced in 2024: it has a 4.5K Retina display and is listed with a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Magic Mouse. Those details apply to that specific configuration, not automatically to every iMac or a newer model. Check the model Apple currently sells in your region before buying. Apple’s iMac (24-inch, 2024, Four ports) specifications identify the configuration.

Choose a Mac mini for a customizable fixed desk

A Mac mini is a compact desktop that connects to a separate display through HDMI or Thunderbolt/USB-C. It suits a desk where you already have a compatible monitor or want to choose one yourself. You will also need a keyboard and pointing device if you do not already own them. Check the exact Mac mini’s ports and display capabilities against the monitor or monitors you plan to use. Apple’s Mac mini M6 and M5 Pro specifications list model-specific connections and display configurations; Apple’s Mac mini display connection guide explains how to connect screens.

Compare the whole workspace, not just the computer

The computer’s listed price alone does not describe what it will take to make your workspace usable. Check what each setup includes and what you already own:

  • Mac mini: Include a compatible display and any keyboard, mouse, or other peripherals you need. Reusing equipment may change the overall cost, but confirm that the display’s resolution and refresh rate fit the Mac mini configuration.
  • iMac: Factor in the integrated display and the input accessories included with the specific configuration. Check whether its ports and screen arrangement meet your needs.
  • MacBook: Decide whether its built-in screen is sufficient at your desk or whether you also need an external monitor. If you add one, verify display support for the exact model.

Current local prices and seller availability are not established here. Check current listings in your region and compare the cost of the complete setup rather than relying on a computer-only figure. Apple’s Mac comparison page may include dynamic prices and older models, so confirm the selected product and current listing before using it to plan a purchase.

Check display needs and ports against the exact model

Display support varies by chip and generation. Do not infer it from the product family name alone, especially if you need multiple screens or a particular resolution and refresh rate.

  • Mac mini M6: Apple’s 2026 specifications describe support for up to three external displays in specified combinations. The listed combinations include up to two displays at up to 6K/60Hz or 4K/165Hz, plus a third at up to 5K/60Hz over Thunderbolt or 4K/60Hz over HDMI.
  • Mac mini M5 Pro: Apple’s 2026 specifications also describe support for up to three external displays, with limits that depend on the number of displays and connection. Check the documented configuration and ports for the exact model.
  • MacBook Air M5: Apple’s 2026 specifications say it supports up to two external displays while using its built-in display at native resolution. Its two Thunderbolt 4 ports also support USB 4 and DisplayPort.
  • iMac: The cited specifications establish details for the 2024 four-port M4 model, not every iMac configuration. Confirm external-display support in the specifications for the exact model you are considering.

For the Mac mini, Apple lists HDMI, three Thunderbolt ports, and Ethernet for the cited M6/M5 Pro models, with Thunderbolt generations varying by configuration. Use the matching technical specifications to confirm which ports and display limits apply before choosing a monitor or dock.

Keep model generations straight

The specifications available for these examples do not describe three models from the same release year: the Mac mini page covers M6 and M5 Pro models (2026), the MacBook Air example is the M5 generation (2026), and the detailed iMac example is the four-port M4 model from 2024. This is a form-factor comparison, not evidence that the three examples are equivalent in performance, price, or age. Verify the exact generation currently offered where you live and use that model’s technical specifications for the final decision.

A practical decision checklist

  1. List where you will use the computer. If you regularly move between locations, start with a MacBook. If it will stay at one desk, compare the iMac and Mac mini.
  2. Write down the display setup you need. Note the number of screens, resolution, and refresh rate. Match each requirement to the exact model’s supported configuration.
  3. Inventory equipment you already own. For a Mac mini, identify a compatible monitor and peripherals; for an iMac, check included inputs and ports; for a MacBook, decide whether you need an external screen at your desk.
  4. Compare complete setup costs and connections. Check current local listings, then account for any display or peripherals you still need. Do not assume a computer-only price represents the cost of a working workspace.
  5. Confirm the generation and configuration before purchase. Use the matching official technical specifications, not a family name or an older model’s capabilities, to verify weight, ports, and display support.
