Choose a long, complex RPG if you want weeks or months of investment in systems, exploration, character builds and optional content. Choose a shorter story-driven game if you want a concentrated narrative that fits a smaller time budget. Neither format is automatically deeper or better: the right choice depends on your available time, tolerance for learning rules, preferred pacing, appetite for side content and interest in replaying different choices.

Start with the commitment you can actually make

The most useful first question is not “Which genre is better?” It is “How will I realistically play this over the next several weeks?” A long RPG can be rewarding only if you have enough uninterrupted attention to learn its systems and remember its goals. A short story-driven game can be the better choice when you want a complete arc without maintaining a large mental checklist.

Use the main-story estimate separately from optional and completionist content. A game may have a modest critical path but many additional hours of quests, exploration or collectibles. Decide which of those layers you are likely to play before treating the advertised runtime as your own schedule.

There is no evidence-based universal number of hours that separates “long” from “short.” The Wayward Strand development team described an aim of keeping its complete experience under two hours; that was a specific design target for that game, not a rule for every short narrative title. Conversely, Christoffer Bodegård’s Unity article gives Esoteric Ebb a possible playtime range from 45 minutes to 50 hours, showing how dramatically approach and optional discovery can change a single game’s duration.

A quick decision rule

  • Pick the long, complex RPG when you can return regularly, enjoy learning interacting systems, and want optional content or build experimentation to be part of the experience.
  • Pick the shorter story-driven game when you want a directed emotional arc, have limited or unpredictable play time, or prefer spending less time managing inventories, quests and rules.
  • Pause and investigate further when a game advertises a short main story but also relies on exploration, branching scenes or multiple perspectives; “short” does not necessarily mean linear or shallow.

What “long and complex” actually adds

Length is a container for content, not a quality score. A lengthy RPG earns its time when the extra hours support activities you personally enjoy. Those activities usually fall into four connected areas.

Systems to learn and combine

Complex RPGs may ask you to understand attributes, equipment, abilities, status effects, party roles, resource economies or tactical positioning. The learning cost arrives before the first satisfying build comes together. Strategy-RPG developers interviewed by AUTOMATON WEST describe a steep learning curve, with battles commonly lasting over 30 minutes. That is qualitative genre commentary, not a measured statistic for every RPG, but it illustrates why a “one-hour session” can disappear into one encounter and its preparation.

Exploration and optional content

Long games often widen the space of possible activities: side quests, optional areas, faction tasks, crafting, challenge encounters and environmental discovery. These elements can make the world feel authored yet flexible, but they also create competing objectives. If you dislike leaving a map unfinished, optional content can turn a nominally manageable game into a much larger commitment.

Character growth over time

Build decisions are more meaningful when you live with them across many chapters. You may plan a party, test a damage type, replace equipment and revise tactics as enemies change. That continuity is a major reason to choose a complex RPG, but it becomes a burden if you prefer to understand the whole ruleset immediately.

Room for detours

A long structure can place quiet travel, conversations or investigation between major plot beats. Those slower stretches are intentional pacing tools, not automatically filler. They are valuable if you enjoy inhabiting a world; they are frustrating if you want the next story turn quickly.

What a shorter story-driven game can deliver

A shorter game concentrates its design around a smaller number of scenes, mechanics or locations. That concentration can produce a stronger sense of momentum without removing agency.

Focused narrative pacing

When a game has fewer hours to fill, each sequence can be assigned a clearer dramatic role. CD PROJEKT RED level designers describe estimating time per quest beat and checking whether the allocation matches that beat’s emotional purpose. Their comments are about one studio’s process, but the underlying lesson is useful: duration matters because it changes how tension, reflection and release are felt.

Player-driven exploration in a compact frame

Short does not mean strictly linear. The Wayward Strand developers describe combining a short authored story with player-driven exploration and multiple story threads. You can therefore get meaningful discovery without committing to a giant map or a months-long campaign.

A complete arc with less maintenance

Shorter games reduce the chance that you forget a character, objective or rule between sessions. They are often easier to finish during a holiday, a busy month or a period when your play time changes from week to week. Finishing is not inherently more satisfying than an unfinished long game, but completion can matter if you value seeing a narrative’s intended ending.

Compare the two formats by the decision that matters to you

Decision axis Long, complex RPG Shorter story-driven game
Time commitment Requires sustained investment; optional content can expand the schedule substantially. Designed for a more concentrated commitment; a specific game may target an experience under two hours, as the Wayward Strand team did.
Rules and learning More systems, builds, inventories or party decisions to learn and maintain. Usually fewer systems to master, leaving more attention for scenes and characters.
Combat or interaction pace Encounters and preparation can occupy a large session; strategy-RPG developers interviewed by AUTOMATON WEST discuss battles commonly exceeding 30 minutes. Interactions are more likely to be arranged around a compact narrative rhythm, although individual designs vary.
Exploration Detours, side quests and optional areas can be a central part of the experience. Can still include player-directed discovery and multiple threads, as described by the Wayward Strand developers.
Story structure May combine open, free-form sections with controlled, linear beats. Often presents a tighter authored arc, but need not remove meaningful choices.
Replay appeal Longer campaigns make alternate builds or choices a major additional commitment. Branching paths can be easier to revisit because the first run is shorter.

These are tendencies, not guarantees. CD PROJEKT RED level designer Miles summarizes the mixed approach this way: “The reality is that in practice, we never do just one thing.” A game can move between open play and controlled story beats regardless of its overall length.

Test your available time before choosing

Estimate your own schedule rather than trusting one headline number. Write down how many sessions you can give the game in a typical week and how long those sessions last. Then consider whether you are comfortable pausing after a conversation, a battle or a complicated objective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your sessions are short or irregular

  • Favor a game whose main story can be divided into clearly bounded chapters or scenes.
  • Check whether optional quests can be postponed without losing context.
  • Prefer a design that lets you resume with an obvious next objective instead of requiring you to reconstruct a build or plot from memory.

If you have long, regular sessions

  • Ask whether you enjoy spending part of a session in menus, preparation or travel; those activities are common time costs in system-heavy games.
  • Look for a campaign whose optional content is attractive rather than merely extensive.
  • Decide in advance whether “completionist” means something you genuinely want or simply a number that creates pressure.

If you dislike playing narrative games in small chunks

A shorter game may fit better because you can preserve its emotional continuity in a few sittings. If the shorter title still contains several threads, plan a weekend or a set of consecutive evenings rather than assuming it can be consumed in one uninterrupted session.

Evaluate the learning curve, not just the genre label

Two games called RPGs can demand very different kinds of attention. Before committing to a complex title, identify what you will be learning and how often you will need to make irreversible decisions.

Questions to ask

  • Will I manage one character or an entire party?
  • Do equipment, skills or status effects interact in ways I enjoy studying?
  • Can I change a build easily, or will an early decision shape dozens of later hours?
  • Am I happy to pause a story to compare statistics and plan a battle?
  • How much of the game’s challenge comes from tactical preparation rather than reflexes?

If several answers point to “no,” a shorter story-driven game with lighter rules may preserve the kind of engagement you actually want. If the answers are “yes,” the learning curve is part of the value rather than an obstacle to overcome.

Decide how much optional content you want

Side content is not automatically filler, and a focused game is not automatically empty. The useful distinction is whether optional material supports your preferred way of playing.

Choose breadth when you enjoy possibility

Choose the longer format if you like deciding which lead to follow, discovering consequences away from the main path and building a personal route through a world. Expect the game to contain stretches where the main plot waits while you pursue something else.

Choose concentration when you want momentum

Choose the shorter format if you prefer each scene to advance a central relationship, mystery or conflict. You can still explore, but the design is more likely to place that exploration inside a bounded sequence.

Marta, a CD PROJEKT RED level designer, cautions that “Adding more content to the game doesn’t make it longer – it just widens the possibility space.” In practical terms, extra activities increase the number of routes and decisions; they do not guarantee a more powerful story. Judge optional content by its relevance to your interests, not by its quantity.

Look at agency and structure separately from runtime

Ask what your choices can change. A game may let you choose where to go while preserving a fixed ending, or it may alter characters, events and outcomes. Both can be satisfying if the scope is clear.

When consequential choices matter

Branching decisions are most rewarding when you can recognize that a choice is consequential. CD PROJEKT RED designers say choices need to be clear enough for players to understand when they are making an important decision. Before starting, decide whether you want to see every branch or make one set of choices and live with the result.

When authored pacing matters

A controlled sequence can deliver a precise emotional beat that a fully open structure might dilute. If you want a carefully paced story, do not treat linearity as a defect. Conversely, if you want to experiment, check whether the game’s open moments are substantial enough to support that behavior.

Consider replay value honestly

Replayability is potential time, not guaranteed value. A branching short game may invite a second run because the cost of revisiting it is low. A long RPG may offer different builds, companions or outcomes, but another complete campaign can require as much commitment as the first.

Choose replay-oriented design when you enjoy comparing alternatives. If you rarely replay games, evaluate the first playthrough on its own: do the systems, pacing and story justify the initial time without relying on hypothetical future runs?

  1. Available time: How many hours can I give the game over the next month?
  2. Session continuity: Can I preserve plot and build context between sessions?
  3. Systems: Do I want to learn interacting rules, equipment and party roles?
  4. Exploration: Do side paths and optional discoveries sound like the main attraction?
  5. Pacing: Do I prefer a directed sequence of dramatic beats?
  6. Agency: Do I want choices to alter characters, events or endings?
  7. Replay: Am I likely to play alternate branches or builds?

High scores on systems, exploration and replay generally favor the long format. High scores on pacing and limited time generally favor the short format. A high agency score does not decide the question by itself: both formats can combine meaningful choices with authored storytelling.

Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming more hours means more depth

Longer playtime can reflect more systems and choices, but it can also reflect travel, repetition or optional tasks you do not value. Ask what the additional hours contain.

Assuming short means simple

Wayward Strand is an example of a short intended experience that still combines multiple story threads and player-driven exploration. Runtime alone cannot tell you how much interpretation or decision-making a game requires.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the learning cost

Count the time spent reading rules, rebuilding a party, comparing equipment and retrying encounters. In a complex RPG, those activities are part of the commitment even when the main story estimate excludes them.

Treating one runtime estimate as a promise

Player behavior changes duration. Esoteric Ebb’s stated range of 45 minutes to 50 hours demonstrates how exploration and approach can produce radically different outcomes. Use estimates as scenarios, not guarantees.

Choosing completionism by default

Completionist content is an option, not an obligation. Decide whether you want the main arc, selected side stories or every available activity before you start measuring value.

Make the final choice

Choose the long, complex RPG when the process of learning, planning, exploring and developing a character is what you want to spend your time doing. Choose the shorter story-driven game when the priority is a concentrated arc that respects a tighter schedule. If you are torn, select the format that matches your next month rather than an imaginary period of unlimited free time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The strongest games can blend both approaches: open and linear sections, player-directed discovery and authored pacing, substantial choices and a manageable runtime. The decision is not between “depth” and “simplicity.” It is between different mixes of time, systems, agency and narrative focus—and the mix you will genuinely enjoy finishing.
