Choose the Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) when your household already uses Google services, especially Google Photos and YouTube, and you want a camera-free display. Choose Amazon’s Echo Show 8 when Alexa is your established assistant, an 8-inch screen fits better, or you want a display with a listed Zigbee, Matter and Thread smart-home hub. Neither platform is universally superior. The right purchase depends on the exact model, the services you use, the devices you need to control and whether a camera belongs in that room.
“An Amazon smart display” is not one product: Amazon sells Echo Show models from compact 5-inch units to wall-oriented 21-inch displays. This guide uses the Echo Show 8 as the practical everyday comparison and explains when another Show or Google’s Nest Hub Max makes more sense.
Start with the household ecosystem
The assistant already used by your household should be the first filter. Nest Hub is designed around Google Assistant, Google Home controls and Google services. Echo Show is designed around Alexa and the Echo ecosystem. Keeping one platform usually means fewer duplicate accounts, simpler routines and less relearning for everyone at home.

List the services and devices that matter before comparing hardware. Include calendars, photo libraries, music subscriptions, video services, lights, locks, cameras, plugs and any automations you expect to run. A display can support a wireless standard yet still lack a particular control or automation, so a familiar brand name or protocol logo is not proof that every feature will work.
#1 Best Overall
- Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.
- Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
- See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
- See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.
Also ask who will use the screen most. A cook may care about readable recipes and timers, a family may want a calendar dashboard, and a bedroom user may care more about microphone and camera controls than video. The best display is the one that solves the room’s main job without adding another account system to maintain.
Quick decision table
| If this describes your home | More suitable starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Most photos are in Google Photos and you watch YouTube | Nest Hub (2nd gen) | Google foregrounds those services and its Google Home controls. |
| You already use Alexa or Echo devices | Echo Show 8 | It keeps voice commands, household profiles and routines in the Alexa environment. |
| You want no camera in a bedroom, hallway or private room | Nest Hub (2nd gen) | The second-generation Nest Hub has no camera. |
| You need a camera for video calls or visual monitoring | Echo Show 8 (2025 release) or Nest Hub Max | Both candidates have cameras; check the exact model’s controls and placement. |
| You need a large wall dashboard | Echo Show 15 or 21 | Amazon positions these larger models for wall mounting. |
| You want a screen that follows you while you move | Echo Show 10 | Its 10.1-inch screen is designed to move with the viewer. |
| You need the broadest listed built-in smart-home radio set | Echo Show 8 | Amazon lists Zigbee, Matter and Thread compatibility for its built-in hub. |
Screen size and placement
Nest Hub (2nd gen)
Google lists a 7-inch touchscreen with 1024 × 600 resolution. It is a compact counter display for a kitchen, bedside table or desk. The specification tells you the pixel dimensions; it is not an independent judgement of brightness, contrast or image quality.
Echo Show 8
Amazon lists an 8-inch HD screen. That extra diagonal inch can make recipes, timers and video calls easier to read at arm’s length, but physical depth, viewing distance and furniture space matter as much as diagonal measurement.
Other sizes
Amazon’s current lineup includes Show 5, Show 8, Show 10, Show 15 and Show 21. Show 5 is the compact option; Show 10 has a 10.1-inch moving display; Show 15 and Show 21 are larger, wall-mountable screens. Google’s larger alternative is Nest Hub Max, which has a 10-inch display, 1280 × 800 resolution and a camera.
Measure the shelf or wall, identify the nearest power outlet and decide whether people will view the screen while standing, cooking or sitting. A larger model is not automatically better if it blocks cabinets, dominates a bedside table or cannot be positioned at a comfortable angle.
Viewing distance also changes the practical difference between models. A 7-inch panel can be easy to read beside a bed but frustrating across a kitchen. Conversely, a 21-inch wall display may be excessive for a bedside alarm and requires a secure mounting plan. Sketch the device’s footprint with cardboard, including room for its cable, before ordering. For the moving Show 10, leave clearance around the rotating screen and keep it away from objects that could be struck as it turns.
Services, photos and entertainment
Google documents Google Photos as a frame option on Nest Hub, along with YouTube, YouTube Music, Spotify and Pandora. That combination suits a household whose photo archive and everyday viewing already live in Google accounts.
Amazon’s buying guide describes Echo Show entertainment and Alexa controls, but the material does not establish identical service-by-service availability with Nest Hub. Check the exact app or service on the model sold in your country before ordering. A service available on one Echo Show generation, through a browser, or only by casting is not necessarily equivalent to a native experience on another model.
For each must-have service, verify four things: whether it is supported in your region, whether voice control works in the language you use, whether a paid subscription is required, and whether the specific model can display the content rather than only play audio. Do this for every household member’s most-used service instead of relying on a general “works with” list.
Do the same for account ownership. Decide which Google or Amazon account will hold the family calendar, photos and shopping permissions, and whether children need separate profiles. A display in a common room can show the wrong person’s recommendations or appointments if profiles are not configured carefully. Test a voice request from the position where people will normally stand; a command that works on a phone may not expose the same visual result on the display.
Smart-home compatibility: standards are a starting point
Google lists Matter support for Nest Hub (2nd gen) and describes the display as a Google Home hub. Amazon lists a built-in hub in Echo Show 8 with Zigbee, Matter and Thread compatibility. These are useful differences when you are buying new lights, plugs or sensors.
Standards do not guarantee identical controls. The same Matter accessory may expose different settings, scenes or automation triggers in Google Home and Alexa. Camera features, door-lock actions and energy information can be especially platform-dependent.
- Write down the exact model and generation of every accessory you own.
- Check the manufacturer’s compatibility page for Google Home, Alexa and the protocol you intend to use.
- Confirm the function you need, such as dimming, lock control, motion triggers or a live camera view, not merely platform support.
- Decide which platform will own routines if both assistants remain in the home.
- After setup, test each critical automation manually and during the time it is supposed to run.
Google says Nest Hub works with thousands of smart devices from popular brands, but that broad statement should not replace checking your particular accessory and required feature.
If you are replacing an old hub, inventory how devices connect today. A Zigbee sensor paired directly to an Echo Show may need to be reset before moving platforms; a Matter accessory may require a new pairing code or a platform transfer. Keep the old hub available until lights, locks and safety-related routines have been tested on the new one. For a rented home, favor plug-in accessories and avoid assuming a wall-mounted dashboard includes every radio needed by your existing devices.
Camera, microphone and privacy controls
Nest Hub (2nd gen)
Nest Hub (2nd gen) has no camera. Google’s support information also distinguishes the camera-free first- and second-generation Nest Hub from the camera-equipped Nest Hub Max. The second-generation unit includes a physical microphone-off switch, which is useful when you want the display present but do not want it listening.
Echo Show 8 (2025 release)
Amazon documents a camera on the 2025 Echo Show 8 and says it is enabled by default. A physical button disables the camera and microphones together. Amazon also documents a settings path that can disable the camera. Those details apply to that release; do not assume the same default or button behavior on every Echo Show size or earlier generation.
Choose based on the room and use case rather than assigning a universal privacy ranking. A camera can enable video calls and visual monitoring, while a camera-free display may be preferable in a bedroom or shared space. Place any camera-equipped model so its field of view is intentional, and explain the physical control to everyone who uses the room.
Privacy is also about what appears on the screen. Turn off voice purchasing if visitors or children can issue commands, review which contacts may call the device, and check whether notification previews reveal messages. These are account and settings decisions, not reasons to assume every model in a product family behaves identically.

Google personal results and shared rooms
Google warns that personal results can appear to people nearby. They may include calendar events, commute information and personalized recommendations. If the display sits in a kitchen or living room, decide whether that exposure is acceptable for every household member.

Configure that setting during setup if the device is in a shared area, then test it with a non-owner account so you know what visitors can see.
Consider the same question for photos. Select albums deliberately rather than exposing an entire library, and remember that an ambient frame is visible whenever someone walks past. If the display is used by guests, place it where the screen is not directly visible from the front door or a neighboring room.
Power, network and account requirements
Both types of display need wall power and Wi-Fi. Google states that its Nest displays do not have batteries and must be plugged into an outlet. Plan cable routing before mounting or placing the device; a convenient shelf without a nearby outlet can become an awkward installation.
Use a stable 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi network supported by your router, keep the device within reliable range and have the relevant Google or Amazon account ready. Update the companion Google Home or Alexa app before setup, and confirm that your phone can join the same network during onboarding.

Prices, bundles and stock change by retailer and country, so compare the exact generation and regional listing on the day you buy rather than relying on an old deal headline.
- Choose the permanent location and verify outlet access.
- Check the exact model name and generation on the box or retailer listing.
- Install the current companion app and sign in to the household account.
- Connect the display to power and follow the app’s Wi-Fi and room-assignment steps.
- Review voice purchasing, personal-results, camera and microphone settings before inviting other users.
- Add one light, plug or other low-risk accessory and test the command before importing all routines.
- Confirm that every person who needs access has the appropriate account or household profile.
When to choose Nest Hub (2nd gen)
- Your household stores photos in Google Photos and wants an ambient frame.
- You rely on YouTube or YouTube Music and want those services foregrounded.
- Google Home already controls your lights, plugs or routines.
- You specifically want a camera-free display.
- A compact 7-inch screen is sufficient for your viewing distance.
Nest Hub (2nd gen) is the straightforward choice for a Google-centered, camera-free room. It is not the right fit if a built-in camera is essential; move up to Nest Hub Max or consider an Echo Show model instead.
When to choose Echo Show 8
- Alexa is already the assistant used by the household.
- An 8-inch HD display is easier to read in your planned location.
- You want Amazon’s listed Zigbee, Matter and Thread hub capabilities in one device.
- You need video calling or another camera-dependent function.
- You prefer a physical control that disables the camera and microphones together on the 2025 release.
Confirm that the listing is the 2025 Echo Show 8 if those camera defaults and controls matter. Amazon’s model names span generations, and a similarly named older device may not have identical hardware or software.

Echo Show 5
Select this compact model when counter space is extremely limited and you mainly need a small glanceable display. Verify that its screen and camera controls meet your requirements; do not transfer Echo Show 8 specifications to it.

Echo Show 10
The 10.1-inch HD screen moves to follow the viewer. It is aimed at people who want a larger interactive display that remains visible while they move around a room. Allow clearance for movement and avoid placing it where a rotating screen could strike objects.
Echo Show 15 and 21
These are larger wall-oriented displays for calendars, household dashboards and content visible from across a room. Check wall construction, mounting height, cable concealment and viewing angle before choosing one.
Nest Hub Max
Nest Hub Max is Google’s larger camera-equipped alternative, with a 10-inch display and 1280 × 800 resolution. It suits a Google household that needs a camera and more screen area than the 7-inch Nest Hub, but its camera changes the privacy decision for the room.

Buying by screen size alone
A bigger diagonal does not prove better image quality. Compare resolution, viewing distance, footprint and placement, then inspect the exact model’s display specifications.

Assuming Matter means identical experiences
Matter can simplify initial compatibility, but available controls and automations can differ. Verify the accessory function in the platform you will actually use.
Ignoring model generations
Echo Show 8 (2025 release) camera behavior is documented for that release only. Nest Hub, Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Hub Max are distinct products. Record the generation before comparing privacy controls or specifications.
Overlooking regional service support
Entertainment apps, voice features and smart-home integrations can vary by country. Check the local product page and the service provider for your region instead of relying on a US listing or an old setup guide.
Placing a display where privacy settings are impractical
A shared room may expose personal results, while a camera-equipped model may face areas you did not intend to monitor. Choose placement first, then configure personal-results, camera and microphone controls before daily use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteReplacing the hub before documenting routines
Write down schedules, device names and household scenes before migrating. Similar names such as “hall light” and “hall lamp” can cause confusing voice results, and a routine that depends on a particular sensor may not transfer with one tap.
Best Value
- 7" Touchscreen Display: View weather, calendar, YouTube videos, and Google Photos on a vibrant 1024x600 resolution screen.
- Google Assistant Built-In: Control smart home devices, set reminders, and get answers hands-free with voice commands.
- Smart Home Integration: Compatible with over 200 devices from 50+ brands, including lights, cameras, and thermostats.
- Entertainment Hub: Stream music and videos from YouTube, Spotify, Pandora, and more with high-quality sound.
- Personalized Routines: Use Voice Match to access your calendar, commute, and reminders tailored to your voice.
Assuming every screen supports the same calls
Camera hardware, contact features and regional calling support vary by model and generation. Confirm the calling method your family uses, whether the recipient needs a compatible app, and whether the camera can be physically disabled when a call is not in progress.
A practical decision checklist
- Which assistant—Google Assistant or Alexa—already runs most household commands?
- Where are your photos, calendars and preferred video and music services?
- Do you require a camera, or is camera-free hardware a requirement?
- Which exact lights, locks, cameras and sensors must work, and what actions must they expose?
- What screen size and viewing distance fit the room?
- Is there a safe wall outlet and dependable Wi-Fi at the installation point?
- Have you verified the exact generation, regional service availability and privacy controls?
- Will you need a wall mount, subscription or additional hub, and is that included in the total budget?
- Who can see personal results, photos and notifications from the chosen location?
If the answers point in different directions, prioritize the platform that controls the most important devices and services. You can add a second platform later, but running two assistants in one room often creates duplicate responses and split routines.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Google Nest Hub the same size as an Echo Show 8?
No. Nest Hub (2nd gen) has a 7-inch touchscreen with 1024 × 600 resolution, while Amazon lists Echo Show 8 as an 8-inch HD display. Physical footprint and viewing distance still matter more than diagonal size alone.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Which one works with Google Photos and YouTube?
Google specifically lists Google Photos, YouTube, YouTube Music, Spotify and Pandora for Nest Hub. Check the exact Echo Show model and your country for equivalent app and voice-control support before buying.
Does Nest Hub (2nd gen) have a camera?
No. Nest Hub (2nd gen), like the first-generation Nest Hub, is camera-free. Nest Hub Max does include a camera.
Is the Echo Show 8 camera always on?
Amazon says the camera on the 2025 Echo Show 8 is enabled by default. Its physical button disables the camera and microphones together, and a settings option can disable the camera. Those controls should not be generalized to every Echo Show generation.
Do Matter devices work identically with Google Home and Alexa?
No. Matter support can simplify pairing, but platforms may expose different controls, scenes and automation triggers. Verify the exact accessory and the function you need in the platform you will use.

Do these displays work without a battery or Wi-Fi?
They require wall power and Wi-Fi for normal operation. Google states that its Nest displays have no batteries and must be plugged into an outlet; plan power and network coverage at the installation point.
The Bottom Line
Choose Nest Hub (2nd gen) for a Google-centered, camera-free room; choose Echo Show 8 for an Alexa household that wants an 8-inch screen and Amazon’s listed Zigbee, Matter and Thread hub. Compare the exact generation, required services, accessory functions, camera controls, placement and total ownership costs before ordering. If you need a moving screen or a wall dashboard, compare Echo Show 10, 15 or 21 directly; if you need a larger Google display with a camera, consider Nest Hub Max.
