Choose a Copilot+ PC when your work depends on Windows, Windows-only applications, or a specific Windows AI feature that uses qualifying NPU hardware. Choose a MacBook Air when macOS, Apple-device integration, and the 13-inch or 15-inch M5 designs fit your software and travel needs better. Neither label guarantees longer battery life or higher performance: Copilot+ PC is a broad category, while MacBook Air specifications depend on the exact M5 configuration.
Start with the constraints that can actually rule out a laptop
The operating system and your required applications should come first. A fast laptop is still the wrong purchase if a critical desktop application, plug-in, peripheral utility, or company security tool only runs on the other operating system. List the applications you use every week, then verify current macOS or Windows support with each publisher. Do the same for browser extensions, virtual-machine requirements, file formats, and collaboration tools.
Next, identify any feature you are buying specifically for artificial intelligence. “Copilot+ PC” describes a hardware class, not one model. Microsoft defines the class around a neural processing unit (NPU) capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS). Microsoft’s buyer guidance also lists 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD as minimum specifications. Those are category requirements, not a recommendation that every workload will be comfortable at that level.
The current MacBook Air specifications covered here are Apple’s M5 models in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes. Both list 16GB of unified memory as the baseline, with higher memory and storage configurations available. The Air’s listed ports are two Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe 3, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. That may be sufficient by itself, or it may require a hub for a desk with several wired accessories.

What “Copilot+ PC” means in practice
It is a qualification, not a single product family
Copilot+ PCs come from multiple manufacturers and use different processor families, chassis designs, screens, port layouts, keyboards, webcams, cooling systems, and batteries. Two laptops can both carry the Copilot+ name while behaving very differently for sustained workloads, gaming, display quality, or connectivity. Read the specification page for the exact model rather than inferring its capabilities from the category badge.
Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC developer guidance explains the NPU threshold and identifies supported device families. The same page notes that many new Windows AI features require an NPU with the ability to run at 40+ TOPS. Feature support can change as Windows updates and device drivers change, so check the feature’s current requirements before paying extra for AI hardware.
The minimum specification is a floor
Microsoft’s 2025 buyer guidance lists 16GB RAM and a 256GB SSD as Copilot+ PC minimums. A browser-heavy student may manage with that capacity, but large creative projects, local development environments, virtual machines, and extensive photo or video libraries can consume it quickly. Treat the minimum as an eligibility threshold. Choose more memory or storage when the workload will hold the laptop for several years and the components cannot be upgraded later.

Apple’s complete specifications are on the 13-inch M5 MacBook Air technical page and the 15-inch M5 MacBook Air technical page. The larger model gives you a bigger working canvas without moving to a different operating system; the smaller model is the more compact choice. Select the size based on how often you work with side-by-side windows, spreadsheets, timelines, or external displays, and how much space you have in a bag or on an airplane tray.
Both sizes provide only two Thunderbolt 4 ports in addition to MagSafe and the headphone jack. If your normal setup needs a monitor, wired network, storage, card reader, audio interface, and charging at the same time, count the connectors before buying. A USB-C or Thunderbolt dock is a conditional accessory, not a universal requirement: it is useful only when your actual peripherals exceed the built-in ports or need a specific connector.

Step 1: Audit application and operating-system compatibility
Make a must-work list
- Write down every application that is essential for work, school, billing, publishing, engineering, design, music, or communication.
- Mark whether each application is native to Windows, native to macOS, browser-based, or dependent on a plug-in, driver, or accessory.
- Check the publisher’s current system requirements, including supported operating-system versions and processor architecture.
- Test specialized hardware such as scanners, audio interfaces, label printers, security keys, and colorimeters against the operating system you plan to use.
- Ask your employer or school whether device management, VPN, endpoint security, or single-sign-on tools support the platform.
Do not treat virtualization or a compatibility layer as an automatic solution. It can add licensing costs, reduce performance for some software, and prevent access to kernel-level drivers or specialized peripherals. If one must-work application has no supported macOS version, a Windows laptop is the safer choice. If all critical applications support macOS and you already use Apple devices, the Air becomes a straightforward option.

Check collaboration and file exchange
Office documents, PDFs, cloud storage, and common browsers usually travel between platforms, but workflows can still diverge. Verify font handling, macros, plug-ins, color-management tools, version-control clients, and export formats. A team that standardizes on Windows-specific utilities may value a Copilot+ PC even when the main documents are cross-platform.
Step 2: Decide whether the NPU changes your work
Name the feature before you shop
Start with an outcome, not the phrase “AI laptop.” You might need a particular Windows feature, local transcription, image effects during calls, or an application that performs inference on-device. Write down the feature and the application that will use it. Then check whether it requires a 40+ TOPS NPU, a particular processor family, a current Windows release, a specific driver, or an online account.
Microsoft states that “Many of the new Windows AI features require an NPU with the ability to run at 40+ TOPS, including but not limited to:” in its developer documentation. That statement establishes a hardware requirement for many features, not a promise that every Copilot+ PC exposes every feature in every country or language. Availability may also depend on staged software releases.
When AI should not decide the purchase
If your daily work is email, web applications, documents, coding, or media consumption and you have no named local-AI task, compare keyboards, displays, ports, software compatibility, ergonomics, and support instead. An NPU can be valuable for future software, but an unused capability should not outweigh a platform mismatch or an inconvenient port layout.
Step 3: Size memory and storage for the way you work
Memory
Copilot+ PC eligibility starts at 16GB RAM under Microsoft’s buyer guidance, and the M5 Air starts at 16GB unified memory in the cited specifications. Those figures are not equivalent performance measurements: the platforms use different architectures and memory systems. Use your own workload to choose capacity.

- 16GB is a reasonable baseline for ordinary browser, office, communication, and light creative work when you keep projects on external or cloud storage.
- Choose a higher memory configuration when you routinely run many large browser tabs, development tools, containers, virtual machines, high-resolution assets, or multiple creative applications together.
- Leave headroom for the laptop’s expected service life; memory-intensive software tends to grow more demanding through major updates.
Storage
The Copilot+ category minimum is a 256GB SSD. That can be restrictive once the operating system, applications, caches, local project files, and recovery space are included. A larger internal drive reduces shuffling and keeps active work available when you are offline. Compare the upgrade price with the cost and inconvenience of a fast external drive, and remember that external storage does not replace internal space for every application or virtual machine.
Apple’s battery test used pre-production M5 Air systems with 16GB unified memory and a 512GB SSD. That test configuration is useful context for the quoted battery figures, but it does not establish battery life for every memory and storage option.
Step 4: Choose display size and physical design
13-inch Air versus 15-inch Air
Apple lists a 13.6-inch diagonal for the M5 13-inch Air and 15.3 inches for the M5 15-inch Air. The 13-inch model favors portability and smaller work surfaces. The 15-inch model gives more room for side-by-side documents, timelines, code and documentation, or a large spreadsheet without changing the operating system.
For a Copilot+ PC, display dimensions are model-specific. Compare the actual diagonal, aspect ratio, resolution, scaling behavior, brightness, refresh rate, touch support, pen support, webcam position, and hinge range. A category label does not tell you whether a particular screen is suitable for color-sensitive work or outdoor use.
Match the screen to your working distance
A larger panel can reduce window switching, but it also increases the laptop’s footprint. If you regularly connect an external monitor, a smaller built-in display may be enough. If the laptop is your only screen for long sessions, prioritize usable vertical space and comfortable text scaling over a headline diagonal measurement.
Step 5: Plan ports, displays, and accessories
Count the connections you use simultaneously
Make a simple inventory: charging, external display, wired network, storage, camera, audio interface, card reader, phone, and any specialist device. Then mark which connections must remain plugged in while you travel. The M5 Air provides two Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe 3 for charging, and a headphone jack. MagSafe can preserve both Thunderbolt ports for data or display use while charging.

Copilot+ PC port layouts range from minimal USB-C designs to models with USB-A, HDMI, audio, card readers, or wired networking. Inspect the exact configuration because a retailer title may omit a port revision or distinguish between USB-C and full-speed Thunderbolt or USB4 support.

Buy a hub or dock only after listing the ports you cannot do without. Check the number and type of displays it supports, maximum resolution and refresh rate, USB data speeds, power delivery, Ethernet speed, SD-card standards, and whether the dock works reliably with your operating system. A dock that technically has many sockets may still be unsuitable if it cannot drive your display arrangement while charging.

Apple’s stated M5 Air method
Apple reports up to 15 hours of wireless-web use and up to 18 hours of video streaming for the M5 MacBook Air. Apple tested pre-production systems with 16GB unified memory and a 512GB SSD. The web test browsed 25 popular websites over Wi-Fi; the streaming test played 1080p video in Safari over Wi-Fi. Apple notes that battery life varies with use and configuration. Why Copilot+ figures cannot be lined up automatically
Microsoft advertises battery results for selected Copilot+ PC systems under Microsoft test conditions, but the numbers differ by model and test setup. Screen brightness, processor mode, wireless activity, applications, battery size, firmware, and test workloads all affect the result. The vendor maximums therefore do not prove that Copilot+ PCs or MacBook Airs last longer as categories.
For a travel decision, find the exact model’s test method and compare it with your likely workload: video meetings, document editing, browser tabs, local development, or media playback. If your day includes sustained CPU or GPU work, expect less runtime than a light web or video test. Carry the appropriate charger and check whether the model supports charging from the adapters and docks you already own.

- Record the full model name, processor family, NPU specification, memory, SSD capacity, display, and operating-system edition.
- Confirm that the NPU meets the requirement for the specific Windows AI feature you named, rather than relying on the Copilot+ badge alone.
- Open the manufacturer’s port diagram and identify every connector, its speed, and its display capability.
- Check webcam, microphone, speaker, keyboard layout, biometric login, wireless support, charger wattage, weight, and warranty.
- Compare the return policy and configuration code, because two listings with similar names may contain different memory, storage, or panel options.
- For the MacBook Air, choose between the 13-inch and 15-inch M5 pages, then select memory and storage for your expected workload instead of assuming the baseline will be upgradeable later.

Common scenarios and the more defensible choice
You use Windows-only professional software
Choose a Copilot+ PC, provided the exact model meets the application’s processor, graphics, memory, display, and peripheral requirements. The Windows dependency outweighs a generic battery or AI comparison. If the application needs a discrete GPU or a specific driver, verify that separately; Copilot+ eligibility alone says nothing about those requirements.
You already use an iPhone, iPad, or other Apple equipment
A MacBook Air may reduce friction if the macOS versions of your applications work and Apple’s device integration matches your routine. Still check company management, storage needs, and external-display requirements. Familiar ecosystem behavior is useful only when it does not conflict with a must-have Windows application.
You travel frequently with only the laptop
Compare the exact chassis dimensions, weight, charger, screen brightness, port needs, and model-specific battery test. The 13-inch Air is the smaller Apple option; a Copilot+ PC may offer a different size or a wider built-in port selection. Do not select from a maximum-hours headline alone.

First identify the task and its privacy or offline requirements. Then verify software support and the NPU threshold. If no current application in your workflow uses the capability, prioritize software compatibility, memory, storage, display, and ports. Revisit AI hardware when the software you intend to use documents a concrete requirement.
You connect several desk peripherals
Draw the connection diagram while the laptop is charging and driving your display. The MacBook Air’s two Thunderbolt 4 ports may be enough for a simple setup, while a hub or dock may be necessary for several devices. A Copilot+ PC could be a better physical fit if the exact model includes the ports you need without adapters.
Purchase checklist
- All must-work applications and peripherals support the selected operating system.
- The exact Copilot+ PC model has an NPU above 40 TOPS when your chosen feature requires it.
- Memory and SSD capacity cover current projects plus the laptop’s expected service life.
- The display size, aspect ratio, brightness, and scaling suit your longest sessions.
- Every required port is present, or the chosen hub or dock supports your displays and data speeds.
- Battery evidence comes from the exact model and a test method resembling your use.
- You have checked the regional keyboard, warranty, return policy, charger, and current configuration price.
The most reliable choice is the one that satisfies these concrete checks. Choose the Copilot+ PC when Windows compatibility or a verified NPU-powered feature is decisive; choose the M5 MacBook Air when macOS compatibility, Apple integration, and the Air’s size and port arrangement better match your work. Treat performance and battery as model-specific questions, not category promises.
