Choose arcade controls from the games outward: list the games and their control types, decide how many players and action buttons the panel needs, measure the cabinet, then match every joystick and button connector to an encoder that supports your host system. A two-player panel with six action buttons per player is a common starting point, not a rule. Feel, layout, mounting depth, wiring format, and software compatibility all matter more than a universal “best” part.

This guide explains how to make those choices, when a USB zero-delay board is sufficient, when a programmable interface is worthwhile, and when optical controls or switchable 4-way/8-way hardware justify a different design.

Make the game list your starting specification

Arcade controls are not interchangeable in the way a generic keyboard is. A fighting game may need eight action buttons and a firm, short joystick throw; a classic maze game may feel better with a dedicated 4-way restriction; a spinner or trackball game needs an optical input rather than ordinary directional switches. Begin with the software you actually intend to play.

Inventory every control type

  • Record whether each title needs a joystick, trackball, spinner, rotary joystick, or only buttons.
  • Count simultaneous players and the action buttons required by the most demanding games you will place on the panel.
  • Mark start, coin, menu, and service controls separately so they do not consume action-button positions.
  • Note games that are predominantly 4-way or 8-way. A standard 8-way lever can be used for many 4-way games, but a dedicated restriction or switchable mechanism may produce the behavior you want.

Keep this list beside your cabinet drawing. It prevents buying a convenient two-player kit and discovering later that it lacks a needed optical control, has too few inputs, or leaves no practical place for administrative buttons.

Use a layout as an example, not a prescription

Ultimarc’s Interface Buyers Guide illustrates a basic two-player panel with one joystick, six action buttons, and start controls for each player. That arrangement is a useful reference for estimating space and input count, but the same guide explicitly treats joystick and button choice as subjective: “The first point we would like to make is that we wont be trying to cover which joysticks and buttons you should use, as this is a very subjective choice.” Your library may require fewer buttons, a different stagger, or only one player.

Design the panel before buying hardware

Measure mounting depth and panel thickness

Draw the control centers on the actual panel, including the cabinet’s front edge, monitor bezel, speakers, and any internal braces. Then check the chosen button and joystick drawings for:

  • Hole diameter and the clearance around neighboring controls.
  • Threaded collar or mounting-plate requirements.
  • Body depth below the panel, including terminals and cable bends.
  • Whether the hardware is intended for wood, metal, or a particular panel thickness.
  • Clearance for the encoder, USB cable, and strain relief.

Do not assume that a bartop has enough room simply because a control kit is advertised as “arcade size.” The lever body, switch orientation, and wiring can collide with a low roof, a speaker enclosure, or a rear wall. Leave a service path so you can replace a switch or unplug the encoder without dismantling the entire cabinet.

Plan player spacing and hand positions

Place each joystick where the player’s wrist can rest naturally without hitting the cabinet edge. Action buttons should follow the hand position and the games’ most-used combinations, not a decorative symmetry that forces awkward reaches. Keep player-one and player-two zones visually distinct, and reserve a separate location for start and coin buttons so they are not pressed accidentally during play.

Choose buttons by feel, mounting, and terminals

Feel is a preference, not a measurable winner

Button choice involves travel, actuation force, sound, return speed, cap shape, and the player’s preference for a click or a quieter press. The available material does not establish an objective ranking, and no independent comparative test supports one button type for every game. If several people will use the bartop, prioritize a consistent, easily replaceable button family over a highly specialized feel that only one player likes.

Check the physical fit

  • Confirm the button hole size specified by the manufacturer.
  • Check the body depth against the panel and any internal obstruction.
  • Verify whether the button uses screw-in or snap-in mounting and whether your panel material supports it.
  • Confirm the terminal style and the supplied harness. A joystick’s cable does not automatically fit your buttons.

Button terminals must mate with the encoder wiring. If a kit includes loose crimp leads, inspect their width and locking tabs before drilling the panel; replacing an entire harness after assembly is slower than checking the connector on the bench.

Choose a joystick for the games and the restrictor

Decide between 4-way, 8-way, and switchable movement

An 8-way joystick allows diagonal directions and suits games designed around them. A 4-way restriction prevents diagonal activation and can make cardinal-direction games easier to control. If your library mixes both types, a switchable joystick is an option rather than a requirement.

Ultimarc describes its ServoStik as using a motor-driven restrictor plate that changes between 4-way and 8-way “in less than a second,” according to the manufacturer’s product documentation at ServoStik. Its control board drives the servos for two sticks. This is useful only if your software and wiring can command the mode change; it adds a specialty component and should not be treated as necessary for a conventional bartop.

Match the lever’s connector

Before ordering, identify the exact joystick model and its connector. The compatibility guide from Focus Attack, “What is the difference between the Japanese & American style Zero Delay Controls set?”, distinguishes the common formats below.

Joystick wiring style Connector described by the guide What to verify
Japanese-style 5-pin harness for Sanwa or Seimitsu levers That the encoder has the matching 5-pin socket and that the supplied lead is pinned for the selected lever.
American-style .187-inch terminals for Suzo Happ or Industrias Lorenzo levers That the harness uses the correct .187-inch receptacles and reaches each switch without tension.
Other compatible variants Some Seimitsu or Crown levers may use .187-inch terminals The actual lever’s datasheet or listing, rather than its brand or appearance.

Two sets can look nearly identical while using different leads. Never select a “Japanese” or “American” kit from the picture alone; read the connector specification and compare it with the lever you will install.

Choose an encoder that matches capacity and host input mode

When a basic USB zero-delay board is enough

A basic encoder is a practical path when the bartop presents ordinary joystick directions and buttons to a Windows computer or an emulation system. The Joy-IT SBC-ZDE Zero delay encoder specifies one joystick, 12 buttons, a Sanwa/Seimitsu 5-pin connection, 5 V operation, and support for Windows, MAME, and other emulations. Those are the stated capabilities of that model; they should not be generalized to every board sold as “zero delay.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search listings often use the phrase “USB zero-delay arcade encoder with wiring harness.” Treat that phrase as a category description, not a specification. Before buying, check the listing for the number of player inputs, whether a 5-pin joystick lead is included, button-terminal dimensions, the USB connector, operating voltage, and the host systems it explicitly supports.

When a programmable interface is justified

A programmable interface is useful when you need custom key codes, several host modes, or a panel that must behave as more than a fixed collection of switches. Ultimarc documents keyboard and game-controller operation and programmable codes for its Mini-PAC/I-PAC family on the Mini-PAC Standard page. The manufacturer also describes a design intended to avoid matrix ghosting and variable scanning delay. Those are manufacturer specifications, not an independent speed comparison.

Choose this route when you can explain which mappings or modes you need. If your host accepts a conventional USB game controller and your panel fits within a fixed input count, a simpler board may reduce configuration work. If you expect to change emulators, remap controls, or share one panel between keyboard-oriented and game-controller software, programmable codes can be worth the additional setup.

Count inputs conservatively

Count every joystick direction, action button, start button, coin button, menu key, and service switch that will be connected at the same time. A stated “12 buttons” capacity does not mean twelve buttons per player, nor does “one joystick” tell you whether a second player’s directions are supported. Compare the encoder’s documented capacity with your complete panel plan, not only with the number of visible action buttons.

Wire the panel without connector surprises

Build a connector checklist

  1. Write down the joystick model and its connector: 5-pin harness, .187-inch individual terminals, or another format.
  2. Write down the terminal type required by every button and administrative switch.
  3. Confirm which leads are included with the encoder and which must be purchased separately.
  4. Check the encoder’s voltage and USB requirements against the host computer or single-board computer.
  5. Label each cable before mounting the panel: up, down, left, right, each action button, start, coin, and service.

Use the joystick harness only for the joystick unless the documentation explicitly says otherwise. Button wiring may use separate two-terminal leads, and the terminals must fit the button tabs. A physically secure connection is not necessarily an electrically correct one if the pin order or terminal width is wrong.

Bench-test before closing the cabinet

Connect the encoder, one joystick, and one button on a workbench. Verify that the host detects the device and that each input produces a distinct direction or button event. Add the remaining controls one at a time. This isolates a mis-pinned harness or faulty switch before it is hidden behind the monitor and speaker wiring.

Add optical controls only when the library needs them

Trackballs, spinners, and rotary joysticks do not use the same switch-based signal path as ordinary arcade buttons and directional levers. Ultimarc’s Opti-PAC documentation specifies support for trackballs and spinners/rotary joysticks and describes one USB cable supporting up to two trackballs and four spinners or rotary joysticks.

Plan these devices as a separate optical subsystem. Confirm the pickup, power, connector, and software configuration for the exact control, then reserve panel space and cable routing for it. Do not connect an optical device to a standard button input and expect the encoder to interpret speed or rotation; the interface must be designed for that signal type.

Compare practical build paths

Build requirement Likely interface path Documented capability or feature Important checks
One or two players using ordinary joystick directions and buttons USB zero-delay encoder The Joy-IT SBC-ZDE lists one joystick, 12 buttons, 5 V, Windows/MAME/other emulations, and a Sanwa/Seimitsu 5-pin port. Do not assume another zero-delay board has the same input count or connector; verify player capacity and every included lead.
Custom mappings or multiple input modes Programmable Mini-PAC/I-PAC-family interface Ultimarc documents programmable codes plus keyboard and game-controller operation. Plan the mapping workflow and confirm the host mode your emulator expects.
Trackball, spinner, or rotary joystick Optical interface such as Opti-PAC Up to two trackballs and four spinners/rotary joysticks on one USB cable are described by Ultimarc. Verify the exact optical device wiring and software setup.
Games that alternate between 4-way and 8-way movement Switchable restrictor joystick such as ServoStik Motor-driven 4-way/8-way switching; one control board drives two stick servos, according to Ultimarc. Provide the control signal and cabinet space; this is optional specialty hardware.

Price, stock, subjective feel, and current compatibility can vary by listing and by host. The useful comparison is whether the interface solves your particular control, connector, and mapping problem.

Configure the host and emulator

For a fixed USB game-controller mapping

  1. Connect the encoder to the host and confirm that the operating system recognizes a USB input device.
  2. Open the emulator’s input-configuration screen and select the detected device.
  3. Assign joystick directions and each button by pressing the physical control when prompted.
  4. Map start, coin, menu, and service inputs separately from player action buttons.
  5. Save the profile, launch one game, and test every direction and button.

The exact menu names differ between operating systems and emulator versions, so follow the labels shown by your installed software rather than assuming a particular keyboard or controller mode.

For a programmable keyboard-oriented interface

  1. Choose the interface’s documented keyboard or game-controller mode before mapping controls.
  2. Assign codes that do not conflict with the host’s system shortcuts or emulator hotkeys.
  3. Record the final code map in the cabinet for future maintenance.
  4. Test simultaneous presses, especially the combinations used by fighting games and menu navigation.

If a game sees a control but the wrong action occurs, the fault is usually a mapping or mode choice rather than a physical button. Recheck the active profile before replacing hardware.

Troubleshoot the problems that appear most often

A joystick direction is missing or reversed

  • Inspect the 5-pin plug orientation and pin order.
  • Confirm that the lever’s connector format matches the harness; a similar-looking plug can be wired differently.
  • Use the host’s input screen to see whether the switch closes at all.
  • If one direction is permanently active, look for a bent terminal, pinched wire, or switch stuck against the panel.

A button is not detected

  • Push the terminal fully onto the button tab and encoder pin.
  • Check that the button’s terminal width matches the lead; do not force a loose or oversized connector.
  • Try the same encoder input with a known-good button to separate a switch fault from a wiring fault.
  • Verify that the button count has not exceeded the encoder’s documented capacity.

The host detects the encoder but the game does nothing

  • Confirm whether the interface is presenting keyboard codes or a game-controller device and select the corresponding emulator mode.
  • Delete an incorrect per-game profile and map the controls again.
  • Test in the host’s general controller panel first; if inputs work there, concentrate on emulator bindings.

Optical controls behave like buttons

An ordinary digital encoder cannot interpret the movement data from a trackball or spinner. Use an optical-capable interface and configure the axis or rotational input in software. Verify the device’s wiring and power before changing game settings.

Three example decision paths

Compact one-player classics cabinet

For a one-player library made mostly of joystick-and-button games, draw a compact panel, choose the lever feel you prefer, and select a USB encoder whose documented inputs cover the joystick, action buttons, start, coin, and menu controls. A board with a Sanwa/Seimitsu 5-pin socket is convenient only if your selected lever uses that harness; it does not remove the need to check button terminals.

Two-player general-purpose bartop

Start with the two-player, six-action-button example as a space and capacity reference, then remove buttons your games never use. Count both players’ directions and administrative controls before choosing the encoder. A single-board specification that says “one joystick” is not evidence that it can accept two complete player controls.

Mixed classic library with optical and directional games

Separate the design into digital controls for ordinary games and an optical interface for the trackball or spinner titles. If the same players also switch frequently between 4-way and 8-way games, evaluate a switchable restrictor after confirming that the cabinet and software can control it. This arrangement costs more space and planning than a basic panel, but it aligns each game type with the signal path it needs.

Final pre-purchase checklist

  • Game list identifies every joystick, button, trackball, spinner, and rotary requirement.
  • Player count and total simultaneous inputs are written down.
  • Panel drawing includes hole spacing, player zones, start/coin controls, and service access.
  • Joystick mounting depth and panel thickness have been checked against the cabinet.
  • Joystick connector is confirmed as a 5-pin harness, .187-inch terminals, or the exact alternative used by the lever.
  • Button terminal size and harnesses are confirmed independently of the joystick cable.
  • Encoder capacity, voltage, USB connection, and host input mode match the build.
  • Optical interface is included if the library contains trackball, spinner, or rotary-joystick games.
  • Any 4-way/8-way switching requirement is deliberate rather than assumed.
  • The complete assembly can be bench-tested before the panel is sealed.

The right bartop control set is the one whose feel you prefer, fits the cabinet, uses the correct connectors, exposes enough inputs, and presents them in the mode your host and emulator can configure. Treat those as separate decisions, and you avoid the most expensive mistake: discovering incompatibility after the panel has been drilled and wired.
