The best apps for a wide foldable do more than enlarge a phone interface. They reorganize content so the extra width is useful, preserve your task when you move between the cover and inner displays, and remain practical when resized beside another app. Evaluate those three behaviors on your own device and workflow, then check Flex mode and any stylus or drag-and-drop needs separately.
What “wide-screen ready” should mean
A foldable app is not automatically well adapted because it opens on the larger display or because its text and buttons become wider. A useful adaptation changes the information hierarchy. Related items should appear together, navigation should remain easy to reach, and the layout should avoid forcing you to scroll through a phone-shaped column surrounded by unused space.
Android’s foldable guidance gives a practical example: on a wide landscape display, “a two-pane layout with a navigation rail makes excellent use of the wide screen.” That pattern might show a message list beside the selected message, a file list beside a preview, or a document beside its outline. The exact arrangement depends on the app, but the principle is consistent: the second pane should reduce navigation and context switching, not merely duplicate controls.
- Useful width: The app reveals related information together or adds an efficient navigation rail, inspector, preview, or timeline.
- Continuity: Your open item, draft, scroll position, playback position, or other task state survives folding and unfolding.
- Resizable usability: The interface remains operable when narrowed beside another app and when the divider moves.
- Posture support: If you use the device partly folded, the app behaves appropriately in Flex mode rather than simply shrinking unpredictably.
- Workflow inputs: Stylus actions, drag and drop, keyboard use, and touch targets work at the sizes and orientations you actually use.
These are evaluation criteria, not a ranking of particular apps. Official platform guidance describes the capabilities an adaptive app should provide, but it does not guarantee that every app, device, version, or region implements them identically.

Start with the unfolded layout
Look for reflow, not stretching
Open the app fully unfolded and identify what changed compared with the cover display. A good layout may switch from a single column to two panes, move navigation into a rail, expose a persistent toolbar, or place editing controls beside the content they affect. A weak layout simply increases line lengths, leaves controls stranded at the far edges, or keeps a narrow phone column in the middle.
Check whether the app uses both the width and the height. A calendar might show an agenda beside a day or week view; a note app might keep a list of notes beside the editor; a video editor might place a preview next to a timeline. Those arrangements are useful because they keep the current context visible while you work.
Check the information hierarchy
Ask three questions while viewing a real item:
- Can you see the current item and the list or navigation needed to choose another item at the same time?
- Are the controls you use most often reachable without repeated edge-to-edge scrolling?
- Does the wider view show more meaningful content, or only larger gaps and longer lines?
Do not judge from the home screen alone. An app may have a polished adaptive launcher but revert to a phone layout inside a detail view, composer, checkout flow, or settings page. Test the screens where you spend time.

Rotate the unfolded device if your workflow permits it. Some apps provide a strong landscape arrangement but a cramped portrait arrangement, or vice versa. Also inspect content near the hinge or fold. Text, buttons, and draggable objects should not be difficult to read or operate because they sit directly in a crease or because a pane is split at an awkward point.
Test continuity when you fold and unfold
Continuity means that a display change does not silently abandon your task. Android Developers states: “To maintain continuity for the user, the app must preserve and restore its state seamlessly, as outlined in the Adaptive app quality guidelines.” Samsung’s developer guidance likewise treats folding and unfolding as a change in display area that the app must handle.
Use a real, interruptible task
A launch test is insufficient. Choose an activity that has state worth preserving, such as composing a message, editing a document, positioning a cursor, watching a video, filling a form, or browsing to a particular item. Then perform the following checks:

- Start the task on the cover display and record the selected item, text entered, scroll position, and any unsaved changes.
- Unfold the device without intentionally navigating away. Confirm that the same item and task are present on the inner display.
- Continue editing or browsing for a moment, then fold the device again. Verify that the cover view returns to the same context.
- Repeat the transition while a keyboard, dialog, picker, or menu is open. Confirm that the app either restores it correctly or closes it in a predictable way without losing work.
- Leave the app briefly, return to it, and repeat the transition. This helps reveal state that survives a simple configuration change but not a longer interruption.
Record what is preserved and what is intentionally reset. A layout may legitimately close a menu that cannot fit on the other display, but losing a draft, selected record, or playback location is a serious continuity failure for that workflow.

Distinguish app failures from device behavior
Foldable transitions can coincide with orientation changes, keyboard changes, window resizing, and system-level animations. If an app appears to restart, check whether the same behavior occurs after a second transition and in another task. App behavior can vary with the app version, device model, operating-system version, region, and window arrangement, so document those details before deciding that an app is unsuitable.
Evaluate multi-window and resizing
A wide inner display is often most valuable when two apps are visible at once. Android’s guidance covers resizable multi-window use, and Android 12 and later support multi-window on large screens regardless of an app’s configuration. That platform capability does not mean every app has a good narrow-window layout; it means the device can place the app in that situation.
Test the exact split you plan to use
Open the app beside a second app that represents your normal work: a browser beside notes, a file manager beside an editor, or a reference page beside a form. Use the split ratio you expect, then drag the divider through several positions.
- At the narrowest useful width, check that the primary action, back control, search, and overflow menu remain visible or reachable.
- Move the divider gradually. Text should reflow, panes should collapse in a logical order, and controls should not overlap.
- Switch focus between windows. The app should retain its selection, scroll position, and input focus when you return.
- Try the arrangement in both orientations if you will rotate the device.
- Repeat with the keyboard visible if your task involves typing; the remaining content should not become unusably short.
Identify graceful degradation
Good adaptive apps have a deliberate fallback. A two-pane layout may become a single pane with a clear back path; a navigation rail may become a compact bar; a toolbar may move into an overflow menu. Poor fallbacks hide essential actions, truncate labels without alternatives, or force constant horizontal scrolling.
Recommended Free Tools
Check dialogs and transient surfaces as well. Permission prompts, date pickers, account switchers, and share sheets may be supplied by the system or by the app. They should remain centered, large enough to use, and dismissible at the window size you selected.

Check Flex mode separately
Flex mode refers to using a partly folded device in a tent-like or laptop-like posture. It is not the same test as opening the device wide. Samsung explicitly notes that Flex mode compatibility varies by app, so treat it as an independent requirement rather than assuming that an app with a good unfolded layout will also understand the hinge posture.
Define what you need from the posture
Some workflows need the app to place controls on one half and content on the other, keep video or a camera preview in a stable area, or expose a touchpad-like control surface. Others gain little from Flex mode and may be better used fully open or closed. Decide whether the posture is essential before allowing it to determine your app choice.
Run a focused Flex-mode check
- Open the task before partially folding the device.
- Fold to the angle you normally use and wait for the app to settle.
- Check whether controls move to an intentional area, remain accessible, and avoid the hinge.
- Interact with the app, then change the angle slightly. Verify that the task does not reset or become trapped in a mode you cannot exit.
- Fully open and fully close the device to confirm that the task and state remain intact.
If the app offers no posture-specific behavior but remains usable, classify it as “usable without Flex optimization,” not as a failure. The right rating depends on whether your workflow requires that posture.
Assess stylus, drag-and-drop, and other inputs
Adaptive quality includes inputs that matter to a particular task. Android guidance calls out stylus interaction and drag and drop where applicable. Do not award an app extra credit merely because it lists broad device compatibility; verify the actions you actually perform.
- Stylus: Test writing, selection, pressure or hover behavior if relevant, palm rejection, and whether the pointer crosses panes accurately.
- Drag and drop: Drag an item between panes or into the companion app. Watch for clear drop targets and feedback before releasing.
- Keyboard and mouse: Confirm that shortcuts, focus order, hover states, and text selection remain practical in a desktop-like arrangement.
- Touch: Check target size near the hinge and at the narrowest window width. A control that is easy to tap unfolded may become difficult beside another app.
Evaluate these inputs in context. A drawing app may need precise stylus behavior, while a reading app may need none. Record unsupported inputs as workflow limitations rather than general app defects.
Use store collections as leads, not proof
Google Play provides tablet- and foldable-specific app collections and recommendations. They are useful discovery tools when you need candidates, especially if you do not know which apps have adaptive interfaces. Placement in a collection is not a guarantee of a particular layout, continuity behavior, or Flex mode support.

For every candidate, read the current listing and update notes, install it on the device you intend to use, and run the task-based checks in this guide. A recommendation may reflect a tablet layout that differs from the foldable arrangement you receive, or behavior that has changed with a later app or system version.
Compare candidates with a consistent scorecard
Use the same four axes for each app so a visually attractive layout does not overshadow a serious continuity or resizing problem.
| Axis | What to inspect | Strong result | Warning signs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unfolded layout | How the app uses the additional width and height | Two panes, navigation rail, preview, timeline, or other meaningful reflow | Phone-width column, excessive empty space, long horizontal lines without added context |
| Continuity | State during cover-to-inner and inner-to-cover transitions | Current item, draft, position, and focus are restored predictably | Restarted screen, lost edits, wrong item, or unexplained scroll reset |
| Multi-window | Behavior beside another app and while dragging the divider | Controls reflow, essential actions remain available, fallback is logical | Overlapping controls, clipped actions, unusable keyboard view, horizontal scrolling |
| Posture and inputs | Flex mode, stylus, drag and drop, keyboard, and mouse as needed | Required inputs work in the intended posture and window size | Hinge blocks controls, posture resets the task, or required input is unsupported |
You can mark each axis as pass, conditional, or fail. “Conditional” is appropriate when the app works only above a certain width, in one orientation, or without a particular input. Keep the condition with the rating so you do not mistake a partial success for universal support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical selection procedure
- Write down the workflow. Name the task, the apps you will pair, the orientation, the approximate split ratio, and whether Flex mode or a stylus is required.
- Find candidates. Use Google Play’s tablet and foldable collections, existing recommendations, or apps you already rely on. Treat every result as a candidate, not a certification.
- Test the core screen unfolded. Open the exact detail, editor, reader, or dashboard you use. Look for meaningful reflow and accessible primary actions.
- Run the continuity sequence. Start on the cover, unfold, continue, fold, and return to the app after a short interruption. Note every state change.
- Run the resize sequence. Place the app beside its companion app, drag the divider, rotate if relevant, and type with the keyboard visible.
- Test optional capabilities. Use Flex mode, stylus, drag and drop, or mouse input only when those functions matter to you.
- Record conditions. Save the app version, device software version, orientation, window arrangement, and region if behavior is inconsistent.
- Choose by failure cost. For a casual reader, a minor layout oddity may be acceptable. For an editor, form, or work app, lost state or inaccessible controls should disqualify the app even if its unfolded home screen looks excellent.
Common failure patterns and what to do
The app stays in a phone layout
Try a different orientation and window width first; some apps expose a second pane only after crossing a breakpoint. If the layout remains a narrow column with unused space, classify the app as a poor use of the unfolded display. You may still keep it for cover-screen use, but do not expect the inner screen to improve the workflow.
The app reloads during a transition
Repeat the test after updating the app and the device software, then compare a simple screen with a stateful task. If drafts or selections disappear consistently, use the continuity result as a deciding limitation. Platform support for configuration changes cannot restore state that the app does not save.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Multi-window hides important controls
Test a slightly wider allocation and look for a compact or overflow layout. If the app has no usable fallback at the split you need, pair a different app or change the workflow. Android 12 and later can place apps in multi-window, but the app still determines how well its content responds to the available width.

Flex mode behaves unpredictably
Check the app’s current documentation and update notes, then retest at the angle you actually use. If no posture-specific behavior is available, decide whether fully open or fully closed use is sufficient. Do not infer Flex support from a good unfolded layout.
Behavior differs from another person’s device
Compare app version, operating-system version, device model, region, orientation, and split arrangement. Foldable behavior is sensitive to those variables, so a recommendation made for one configuration may not transfer exactly to yours.
Make the final decision by workflow
For reading and reference, prioritize a two-pane arrangement or persistent navigation that lets you move among items without losing your place. For writing, editing, and forms, continuity and keyboard behavior usually matter more than decorative use of the extra width. For research or file work, test drag and drop and the exact companion app you will keep visible. For media, verify playback or recording state through posture and display changes before valuing a larger preview.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf two apps are otherwise comparable, choose the one that preserves context and remains usable at your planned split ratio. A modest but reliable adaptation is more valuable than a dramatic unfolded layout that collapses when you resize it or fold the device.
Keep the result current
App behavior can change with updates, and platform guidance and Google Play collections can change as well. Recheck the apps you depend on after a major app or system update, after changing devices, or when your window arrangement changes. A result is meaningful only for the configuration you tested: device, software version, app version, region, orientation, posture, and window size.
The most dependable choice is therefore not “the app labeled foldable.” It is the app that demonstrates useful reflow on your unfolded screen, keeps your task intact through display changes, and stays controllable in the multi-window arrangement you will actually use.
