The smoothest Android-to-desktop setup starts with two decisions: identify the data you need available and name your desktop operating system. Windows users who want notifications, messages, calls, photos and other supported phone experiences should evaluate Microsoft Phone Link with the Link to Windows Android app. People who mainly need to copy documents, videos or folders may be better served by Android’s wired computer-transfer workflow. These are overlapping but different tools: a phone companion connects experiences, while a cable moves files.
Start with the data, not the app name
“Sync” can mean several different outcomes. Write down the exact information you want on the computer before installing anything:
- Files and folders: documents, downloads, recordings, videos or project folders.
- Photos: a browsable camera roll, selected photo access or automatic backup.
- Messages and notifications: reading or responding without picking up the phone.
- Calls and contacts: handling phone calls from the computer.
- App continuity: using supported mobile apps or moving content between devices.
- Ongoing access or occasional transfer: whether changes should remain available automatically or you only need a direct copy when required.
Then identify the desktop platform. Phone Link is Microsoft’s Windows experience; Link to Windows is its Android counterpart. Android’s USB workflow is a direct device-to-computer file transfer and does not depend on a phone-companion app. The right choice follows from this combination of data, operating system and transfer frequency.

Define what kind of “sync” you actually need
A connected phone experience, a file transfer and a backup solve different problems. A companion app can surface selected phone activity on a Windows computer, but it does not necessarily create a browsable copy of every folder. A USB transfer gives you direct control over which files are copied, but it is normally a task you start and finish yourself. A cloud backup places copies online and may make them available from more than one device, but it is not automatically a two-way desktop folder.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Ask these questions before choosing:
- Do you need the newest notification or message to appear on the PC, or only a copy of yesterday’s photos?
- Must edits made on the computer return to the phone, or is a one-way copy enough?
- Will you transfer a few selected files, an entire camera folder or a recurring project folder?
- Is your computer Windows, macOS or Linux, and does the proposed app explicitly support that platform?
- Would you rather grant phone permissions to a paired app, connect a cable when needed or store copies in an online account?
Those answers prevent a common mismatch: buying a cable for a notification problem, or expecting a phone companion to behave like general-purpose continuous folder-sync software.
Understand the three transfer models
Phone companion: connected phone experiences
Phone Link on Windows pairs with Link to Windows on Android. Depending on the phone model, software version, permissions and account setup, Microsoft documents access to notifications, photos, messages, calls, supported app experiences and content transfer. The connection is configured as a relationship between a particular phone and PC, so it is most useful when you want the desktop to act as an extension of the handset.
This model is not a promise that every Android feature appears on Windows. Microsoft maintains eligibility requirements, and capabilities vary by device and setup. Treat each feature you care about as a separate compatibility question.
Wired transfer: direct file movement
Android Help documents connecting a phone to a computer and selecting a file-transfer mode so a computer file-transfer window can access the device. This is appropriate for a deliberate copy of folders or large media when you do not need notifications, calls or message access.
A wired transfer is an operation you initiate. It should not be described as proof of continuous two-way folder synchronization: copying a file today does not automatically mirror later edits.
Cloud backup: copies stored online
Cloud backup is a third model. Android Help notes that local files from a Pixel phone can be automatically backed up to Google Drive. Backup protects or exposes copies through an online account, but it is not the same as a live desktop folder, and the cited Android guidance is specific to local files from Pixel phones. Check the phone and account behavior before assuming that every Android model backs up the same locations.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Compare the practical choices
| Decision axis | Phone Link plus Link to Windows | Android computer file transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Windows users who want supported phone-connected experiences | Anyone who mainly needs to move files directly |
| Data and functions | Selected notifications, photos, messages, calls, supported apps and content-transfer features, varying by device and setup | Files transferred between an Android device and a computer |
| Compatibility check | Verify Windows, Android, phone-family, software-version, account and feature eligibility | Verify the phone-computer connection and use a data-capable cable |
| Connection model | Paired PC and Android apps, with permissions and feature configuration | Wired device-to-computer connection |
| Main caveat | Not every feature works on every phone; multiple Android profiles and work or school accounts are not currently supported by Phone Link | File transfer is not evidence of continuous background, two-way synchronization |
Use the first column when the desktop should surface phone activity. Use the second when your goal is simply to retrieve or place files. If you need both, they can coexist: Phone Link handles eligible phone experiences while a cable handles a one-time or occasional bulk copy.
Windows setup: pair Phone Link with Link to Windows
Check eligibility before troubleshooting
Microsoft lists supported Android device families and says some experiences are limited to eligible devices and software versions. Requirements can change, so check Microsoft’s current Phone Link requirements page for your exact Windows release, Android version and phone model before buying accessories or expecting a particular feature.
- Use a Windows PC and an Android phone that meet Microsoft’s current support requirements.
- Sign in with the account requested during setup; account restrictions can affect pairing and features.
- Do not plan around multiple Android profiles or a work or school account. Microsoft currently identifies those as unsupported Phone Link scenarios, which is a Phone Link limitation rather than a general Android restriction.
- Keep the phone and PC available during pairing and allow the permissions requested for the features you intend to use.
Pair the two apps
- On the Windows PC, open Phone Link. If it is not installed or is out of date, obtain the current Microsoft app through the Windows-supported channel.
- In Phone Link, choose the Android pairing option and follow the on-screen instructions. The PC will display a pairing step, commonly involving a code or a sign-in prompt.
- On the Android phone, install or open Link to Windows from Google Play, then choose the option to link it to a Windows PC.
- Sign in with the account requested by both sides and confirm that the code or pairing request shown on the phone matches the PC.
- Accept only the permissions you need, but remember that a feature cannot work without its corresponding permission. Notifications, contacts, messages, calls, photos and app experiences can each require separate access.
- In Phone Link’s feature settings, enable or disable the categories you want synchronized. Configure notification access and message, photo or calling permissions deliberately rather than enabling everything by default.
- Test one task at a time: send a test message, place a test call, check a recent notification or open a permitted photo. A successful pairing does not prove that every category is eligible.
Know what the pairing can and cannot promise
Microsoft describes Phone Link as a way to sync your phone to your PC, but the available experience depends on the selected phone and configuration. A supported device may expose notifications and photos while another eligible setup offers additional app or content-transfer functions. The Google Play listing for Link to Windows advertises features such as file drag-and-drop and cross-device copy and paste; treat those as advertised capabilities and confirm that your phone and software qualify.
Phone Link also requires ongoing permissions and configuration. Revoking notification access, restricting background activity or changing the signed-in account can make one feature stop while the rest of the pairing remains intact. Diagnose the affected category instead of assuming that the whole connection failed.
Use Android’s wired transfer when files are the priority
Choose the cable path for deliberate copies
Use a cable when you want a visible device folder on the computer, need to copy a large batch without configuring a phone companion, or prefer to keep the transfer local. It is particularly clear for moving camera folders, downloads, recordings and project files between the two storage locations.
Transfer files step by step
- Connect the Android phone to the computer with a USB cable that supports data, not charging only.
- Unlock the phone. Android may show a USB notification; open it and select File transfer or the equivalent file-transfer mode.
- On the computer, open the device shown in the file manager. Android Help describes a computer file-transfer window for browsing the phone’s accessible storage.
- Copy the required folders to a clearly named destination on the computer, or copy files from the computer into the appropriate phone folder.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before disconnecting. For irreplaceable files, open a sample on the destination computer and verify the file count or sizes.
- Eject or safely disconnect the device using the computer’s normal removal command, then unplug the cable.
Buy only the accessory this workflow needs
If your phone uses USB-C and the computer has USB-A, choose a cable with those connectors; if both ports are USB-C, choose a USB-C-to-USB-C cable. Confirm that the listing explicitly supports data transfer. A charging-only cable can power the phone while never presenting a storage device to the computer.

This cable improves the wired file-transfer path only. It does not add Phone Link features and does not turn cloud backup into continuous synchronization.
Common wired-transfer pitfalls
- Wrong USB mode: Android can default to charging. The phone must be unlocked and set to file transfer before the computer can browse storage.
- Charge-only cable: A cable may fit perfectly and still lack data conductors. Check the product description rather than judging by the connector.
- Assuming a copy is a mirror: A folder copied to the PC will not automatically receive later phone changes through this workflow.
- Disconnecting too early: Keep the phone connected until the computer finishes writing, then verify a sample file before removal.
- Buying an accessory for the wrong problem: A data cable is relevant to direct file movement, not to Phone Link eligibility, notifications or cloud-backup behavior.
Match the workflow to your desktop operating system
Windows
Windows is the platform covered by Microsoft’s Phone Link and Link to Windows pairing. If you need desktop notifications, messages, calls or supported app experiences, start with the compatibility requirements and then configure the individual permissions. If you only need files, Android’s USB workflow is simpler and does not require feature eligibility.
macOS and Linux
Microsoft’s documented Phone Link integration is for Windows, not an equivalent Phone Link experience for macOS or Linux. Do not assume that installing the Android companion creates the same feature set on those desktops. For a Mac or Linux computer, treat direct Android file transfer and any separately evaluated cloud service as distinct options, and verify that the specific desktop software supports your phone before relying on it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe operating-system decision should come before comparing app features. A tool that solves notifications on Windows may not solve the same task on a Mac, while a cable-based file transfer remains conceptually separate from desktop companion features.
Permissions, profiles and account boundaries
Phone Link is not a universal Android bridge. Microsoft says availability depends on the supported device and setup, and individual categories can require their own permissions. Decide which categories you need, grant only those permissions, and revisit them if one category stops working.
Pay special attention to account context. Microsoft currently does not support multiple Android profiles or work and school accounts in Phone Link. That does not mean Android itself cannot use those profiles; it means the Phone Link scenario has that limitation. If your phone separates personal and managed profiles, check the current requirements before designing a workflow around the managed profile.

Keep the pairing relationship clear as well. Confirm that the intended phone is linked to the intended Windows PC and that both sides use the account requested during setup. A pairing indicator alone is not proof that calls, photos, messages and notifications all have permission to function.

The PC cannot find the phone during wired transfer
- Unlock the phone and select File transfer, not charging-only mode.
- Replace the cable with one confirmed to carry data, and try another USB port.
- Reconnect after closing the file manager, then check whether the phone appears as a device.
- If the phone still does not appear, test the same cable and phone on another computer to isolate the phone, cable and computer variables.
Phone Link pairs but a feature is missing
- Check Microsoft’s current device and software eligibility for that exact feature.
- Open Phone Link and Link to Windows settings and confirm that the relevant permission remains enabled.
- Check whether the limitation is tied to a multiple-profile, work-account or school-account setup; Microsoft currently does not support those Phone Link scenarios.
- Update the Windows and Android apps, then pair again only after recording which category failed.
Notifications or messages stopped updating
- Confirm notification or message access on the phone and that the category is enabled in Phone Link.
- Check whether battery-saving or background restrictions paused Link to Windows.
- Verify that both devices are still signed in to the intended account and that the phone remains paired to the correct PC.
Files copied successfully but are not “syncing” later
That result is expected from a manual USB transfer. Recopy changed files when needed, or select a separate backup or synchronization service whose documentation explicitly supports your phone, desktop operating system and desired folders. Neither a successful cable copy nor Phone Link pairing by itself proves continuous two-way folder mirroring.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A decision checklist you can reuse
- Name the data: files, photos, messages, notifications, calls, app continuity or a combination.
- Name the computer: Windows, macOS or Linux.
- Choose the transfer frequency: one-off copies, occasional imports or ongoing access.
- Select the model: Phone Link for supported Windows phone experiences, USB for direct files, or a documented cloud-backup service for online copies.
- Check compatibility: phone family, Android and Windows versions, account type, profiles and the individual feature’s eligibility.
- Configure the minimum permissions: grant only the access needed for the categories you selected.
- Run a small test: transfer a sample folder or test one notification, message, call or photo before moving your entire workflow.
- Plan recovery: keep an original copy until the destination opens correctly, and know whether your chosen method is a backup, a manual transfer or a live companion connection.
The practical distinction is simple: choose Phone Link with Link to Windows when your Windows desktop should participate in supported phone activities; choose Android’s wired transfer when your immediate requirement is moving files; and treat cloud backup as a separate online-copy strategy. Making the data and platform decision first prevents a cable from being mistaken for sync software or a phone companion from being treated as a universal folder mirror.

Can I use Phone Link with a Mac or Linux desktop?
The documented Phone Link integration is for Windows. Do not assume that Link to Windows provides the same experience on macOS or Linux; evaluate direct file transfer or a separately documented cloud option instead.
What cable is needed to transfer Android files to a computer?
Use a cable with matching connectors that explicitly supports data transfer. A charging-only cable may power the phone without making its storage available to the computer.
Why does my computer charge the phone but not show its files?
Unlock the phone and choose File transfer in the USB notification. If it still does not appear, try a confirmed data cable and another USB port.

Does Phone Link support multiple Android profiles or work accounts?
Microsoft currently identifies multiple Android profiles and work or school accounts as unsupported Phone Link scenarios. This is a Phone Link limitation, not a general Android limitation.
Does Android automatically back up all phone files to Google Drive?
Android Help specifically notes automatic backup of local files from a Pixel phone to Google Drive. Do not assume that every Android model or folder behaves identically; verify your phone’s documented behavior.
Can Phone Link and a USB cable be used together?
Yes. They address different tasks. Phone Link can handle eligible Windows phone experiences while a cable handles a deliberate file copy or bulk transfer.
What should I test after pairing?
Test one category at a time: a notification, message, call or permitted photo. Pairing success alone does not prove that every feature is eligible or enabled.
The Bottom Line
Choose by task first: Phone Link and Link to Windows are for supported Windows phone experiences, USB is for direct file movement, and cloud backup is an online-copy strategy. Check your phone, account, operating system and feature eligibility before assuming that any method provides continuous two-way folder synchronization.
