You don’t add a physical microphone to Samsung Keyboard: you enable a voice-input provider in Settings, then tap the microphone when the keyboard appears. On most supported Galaxy phones and tablets, go to Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Voice input and choose Samsung voice input or Google Voice Typing. Labels and locations can vary by device, region, and software version.
Enable voice input in Samsung Keyboard

Open Settings.

Tap General management, then Samsung Keyboard settings.

Tap Voice input and select Samsung voice input or Google Voice Typing. Samsung voice input is available only when you use Samsung Keyboard. Samsung’s guides describe voice input as converting speech into text messages. Samsung’s keyboard settings guide and voice-to-text guide document these options.

Open a messaging app or another text field to display the keyboard, then tap its microphone icon. Speak when the icon is active. On first use, you may need to accept terms or grant permissions.

Find the microphone if it is missing
The control may be in a different place, or the selected voice-input option may not be enabled. Check these settings:

Open Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default and confirm the relevant voice-input option is enabled. Samsung’s US support guide also identifies Keyboard button on navigation bar as a setting to check.

In Samsung Keyboard settings, check whether the keyboard toolbar is enabled. Samsung Canada lists Voice Input among the toolbar controls; depending on the interface, it may appear after expanding the toolbar. See Samsung Canada’s keyboard settings guide, updated March 28, 2026, for guidance applicable to Canadian devices.

If you cannot find a named menu, search the Settings app for “Samsung Keyboard” or “Voice input.” Samsung notes that settings and screens can vary by country and device.

Choose between the available voice-input providers

The practical choice is the provider your device offers, whether you want to keep Samsung Keyboard selected, and whether your needed language is available. The cited Samsung sources do not establish that either provider is more accurate, private, faster, or better overall.
Set a dictation language
Return to Samsung Keyboard settings > Voice input to review available offline languages. Select a language or install an offline language pack if one is offered for your device. Availability may differ by device and region.

Troubleshoot voice typing

Samsung voice input is unavailable: It works only with Samsung Keyboard. Check whether Google Voice Typing is available instead.

Tapping the microphone does nothing: On first use, check for a terms prompt or a permission request, then try speaking again.

The needed language is missing: Review the offline language list and install a pack if the option is offered.

The microphone remains hard to find: Check the default keyboard, voice-input selection, navigation-bar keyboard button, and keyboard toolbar. The icon’s position can vary.
Samsung Community users have also suggested, for some configurations, long-pressing a keyboard or navigation control to select voice input, or assigning voice input to a long-press of the spacebar. These are device-dependent community suggestions, not universal Samsung instructions; the official settings routes above are the more consistent place to start.
