Choose speaker wire by checking the one-way cable run, speaker impedance, terminal type, and installation location. Then connect positive to positive and negative to negative at both ends. Thicker wire has a lower American Wire Gauge (AWG) number; the right size depends on your equipment and cable length, not on a universal chart.

What speaker wire does

Speaker wire carries an amplifier’s output to passive speakers. It is usually a two-conductor cable, with insulation around each conductor and a marking—such as a stripe, ridge, or printed text—on one side to help you keep polarity consistent from end to end.

AWG numbers work opposite to what some people expect: a lower number means a thicker conductor. For the same conductor material and length, thicker wire has lower resistance. Southwire notes that wire choice depends on system impedance, cable length, and power requirements: Southwire’s wire-gauge guidance.

How to choose a gauge

Start with the speaker or amplifier manual, then use the actual cable route length and the speaker’s nominal impedance to assess the recommendation. Published charts differ because manufacturers make recommendations for particular equipment and assumptions; none of the figures below is a universal maximum.

Klipsch speaker-wire chart; publication date not stated For 16 AWG, a maximum of 48 feet with an 8-ohm speaker and 24 feet with a 4-ohm speaker. Klipsch highlights its 8-ohm column because it says essentially all of its speakers have that nominal impedance. See Klipsch’s chart.
Teufel guidance, 2026 For runs up to 5 m, 1.5–2.5 mm² is described as almost always sufficient; for 10 m or longer, Teufel advises 2.5–4 mm². It also recommends cable resistance at or below 0.4 ohms. These are Teufel’s recommendations. See Teufel’s guidance.
TIC chart, 2019; stated context 18 AWG for 0–50 ft, 16 AWG for 50–100 ft, and 14 AWG for 100–200 ft. TIC notes that power loss varies with load impedance. See TIC’s guide.

Use a chart as a starting point, not a promise that every system has the same limit. For instance, the Klipsch chart shows different recommendations for 4-ohm and 8-ohm speakers at the same gauge, while TIC explicitly notes that load impedance affects power loss. If your manuals disagree with a general chart, follow the guidance for your actual equipment or ask its manufacturer.

A practical selection checklist

  • Measure the planned route from amplifier to speaker, allowing enough cable to route neatly rather than stretching it tight.
  • Check the speaker’s nominal impedance and the amplifier’s instructions for compatible loads and wire size.
  • Choose a conductor gauge that meets the equipment guidance for that length and impedance. A lower AWG number means thicker wire.
  • Confirm the cable has two identifiable conductors and that its termination will fit your equipment.
  • Check that its jacket and rating suit the route—indoors, outdoors, buried, or inside a wall.

Does cable material or construction matter?

Speaker cable commonly uses copper or tinned-copper conductors. Stranded conductors bend more easily than solid wire, which can make routing and fitting them into terminals more convenient. Southwire’s technical reference, by Edwin Marquez and Kevin Wahl, describes flexibility as one benefit of stranded wire: Southwire’s technical reference.

Paradigm recommends shielded 12 AWG oxygen-free copper for its systems and says not to use wire below 16 AWG. That is Paradigm’s product-specific advice, not a requirement for every speaker setup: Paradigm support.

The cited vendor recommendations and cable specifications do not establish that oxygen-free copper or a premium cable generally produces an audible improvement over other suitable speaker wire. Choose based on suitable gauge, installation rating, construction, and terminal compatibility rather than an unverified sound-quality promise.

How to connect speaker wire safely

Terminal designs vary, so use the instructions for your amplifier and speakers. For conventional bare-wire terminals, the basic process is:

  1. Power down the receiver or amplifier. Do not make or change speaker-wire connections while it is on.
  2. Prepare the wire. Use a wire stripper to remove insulation from the end. Klipsch specifies approximately 3/8 inch for its procedure; check your equipment’s instructions for the appropriate amount. Twist the exposed strands together so none are loose.
  3. Identify the marked conductor. Use the cable’s stripe, ridge, or printed markings to keep the same conductor connected to positive at each end.
  4. Connect each speaker end. Put the conductor intended as positive into the speaker’s “+” or red terminal, and the other into “−” or black, following the terminal’s instructions.
  5. Connect the amplifier end the same way. Match positive output to positive speaker terminal and negative to negative. Tighten or secure the terminals as directed.
  6. Inspect the connections. No stray copper strands should touch the other terminal or neighboring wiring.

Klipsch’s installation instructions likewise call for powering off the receiver, stripping about 3/8 inch, twisting strands, and inserting them into corresponding red and black terminals: Klipsch’s bare-wire procedure. Bare wire is suitable when terminals are designed to accept it. Banana plugs or spade connectors are optional only if the specific amplifier and speaker terminals support them; check both manuals.

Why polarity matters

Polarity means keeping the amplifier’s positive output connected to the speaker’s positive terminal and the negative output connected to negative. Reversing one speaker relative to another can affect stereo imaging and the perceived bass. Focal’s instructions specify matching the “+” and “−” terminals at the speaker and amplifier: Focal support.

Some product-specific setup guides add recommendations beyond basic polarity. For example, Audioengine recommends at least 16 AWG and equal cable lengths from amplifier to each speaker for its P4 speakers; treat these as instructions for that model, not a universal requirement: Audioengine P4 setup guide.

Where can speaker wire be installed?

Indoor, exposed runs

For a visible indoor route, select a cable with suitable conductor size and a jacket that will tolerate the location and handling. Plan a path that avoids strain on the wire and terminals, and keep the marked conductor identifiable at both ends.

Outdoor or buried runs

For outdoor use, choose cable rated for the exposure and route. TIC recommends burial-grade speaker cable for direct burial, or conduit to protect standard cable: TIC’s installation guidance. Belden lists speaker-cable options for commercial and professional installations, including direct-burial configurations and multiple conductor sizes: Belden speaker cable.

In-wall runs

Before concealing cable in a wall, verify the cable’s stated in-wall rating and the requirements that apply in your location. Requirements can vary, and a product description alone does not establish that an installation complies with local rules. If uncertain, check local guidance or consult a qualified installer.

Quick troubleshooting

  • No sound from one speaker: Power down the amplifier and check that both ends of that speaker’s cable are secure and connected to the intended terminals.
  • Weak or unusual bass, or an unstable stereo image: Check that positive and negative are consistent at both speakers and amplifier outputs.
  • Loose strands or intermittent connection: Power down, remove the wire, trim and strip it cleanly, twist the strands together, and reconnect without allowing copper to bridge terminals.
  • Unsure whether the cable suits the run: Compare its gauge and length against the speaker and amplifier manuals, taking impedance into account; do not assume a chart from another manufacturer sets your system’s limit.
