The safest XRP Ledger wallet is the one whose custody model, recovery plan, and XRPL support match your ability to protect account credentials. A custodial service keeps the secret keys and may offer password recovery, while a non-custodial wallet leaves the keys with you and gives you no recovery option if they are lost. Hardware wallets isolate keys on a physical device; software wallets are easier to access and often provide more features.
After choosing a wallet, verify funds independently on the public XRP Ledger. Use only the account’s public address with a reputable XRPL Explorer or the account_info command. Never provide a seed, secret key, or recovery phrase for a read-only balance lookup.
What you are choosing: custody, keys, and recovery
An XRP Ledger wallet is an interface for controlling an XRPL account. The account is identified publicly by an address, while a secret key authorizes transactions. Your first decision is who controls that secret key.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Choice | Who controls the secret key? | Recovery and support | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custodial account | The provider holds it. | The provider may offer password reset, account support, and operational recovery. | You depend on the provider for access and withdrawals. Customer balances can be represented by pooled on-ledger accounts rather than an individually controlled XRPL account. |
| Non-custodial wallet | You hold and use it. | There is no provider recovery path if the key or recovery material is lost. | You get direct control, but you are responsible for backup, device security, and every authorized transaction. |
The XRP Ledger Crypto Wallets documentation states: “If you lose your keys, you are locked out of your XRP Ledger account and there are no recovery options.” Treat that as an operational requirement, not a warning to postpone. Before depositing meaningful value, prove that you can locate your backup and understand how to restore the wallet.

Custodial does not mean the ledger account is yours alone
A custodial provider can credit your balance in its own records while using pooled XRP Ledger accounts. You may not receive a separately controlled on-ledger account. Ask how deposits are mapped to customers, whether you receive a unique XRPL address, how destination tags are used, and what happens during an outage or withdrawal review.
Non-custodial means irreversible responsibility
With a non-custodial wallet, the provider cannot reset your secret. A forgotten password may be replaceable only if you still have the recovery material; losing that material can permanently remove access. A backup is therefore part of the wallet, not an optional extra.
Hardware versus software wallets
The second decision is where the key is stored. Hardware wallets keep key material on a physical device that can be disconnected from the internet. Software wallets keep it in an application on a phone, computer, or other connected device and are generally quicker to access.

| Factor | Hardware wallet | Software wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Key exposure | Signing keys remain on a dedicated device that can be offline between uses. | Keys are handled by an application on a connected general-purpose device. |
| Convenience | Requires the device, setup, cable or connection method, and physical access when signing. | Usually available wherever the application is installed and unlocked. |
| Features | May be more focused on signing and review. | May provide more integrated account, payment, and network features. |
| Risks still requiring attention | Loss, damage, counterfeit hardware, unsafe backups, malicious software displaying a misleading transaction, or unsupported XRPL integration. | Phishing, malware, device compromise, fake applications, and unsafe storage of recovery material. |
| XRPL compatibility | Not every device supports the XRP Ledger or every XRPL feature. Confirm current manufacturer and wallet-integration documentation. | Confirm that the application supports the XRPL network, the address format you use, destination tags where required, and the features you need. |
Disconnecting a hardware wallet reduces some online exposure, but it does not eliminate the need to verify the transaction on the device screen, protect the recovery backup, or obtain the device from an authentic source. Do not assume that a product supports XRPL merely because it supports another blockchain.
The official XRPL wallet guide names Xaman as an example of a non-custodial wallet. That example is not a universal recommendation or evidence that its features, integrations, or availability are unchanged. Check the current application documentation, custody terms, and download source before installing any wallet.

- Multiple ways of locking: you can use the matching screws to lock up the steel bitcoin wallets; You can also lock them up and hide them in other places if you still feel unsafe; The hole on the bitcoin wallet measures 6 mm/ 0.24 inch in diameter, suitable for hanging
- Who must be able to recover access? If you need a provider to reset access, a custodial service may fit better. If direct control is essential and you can maintain backups, consider non-custodial custody.
- How often will you transact? Frequent small payments may favor an accessible software interface. Infrequent or higher-value storage may justify the handling discipline of a hardware device.
- Can you protect a backup for years? If you cannot securely store recovery material and test restoration, do not choose a self-custody arrangement for funds you cannot afford to lose.
- Does the wallet support the exact XRPL flow you need? Confirm network support, account creation and funding, destination tags, X-addresses if relevant, and transaction review before depositing.
- Can you independently inspect public data? You should be able to copy the public address and check it with an XRPL Explorer or a trusted read-only service without handing the wallet your secret.
- Is the provider transparent? For a custodian, review key-control terms, withdrawal rules, security practices, service status, and how customer deposits are represented on the ledger.
Set up a wallet without exposing the account
For a custodial service
- Reach the provider through its independently verified official channel, not an advertisement, unsolicited message, or support account that contacted you first.
- Read the custody and withdrawal terms. Confirm whether you receive an individual XRPL address or a pooled address plus a destination tag.
- Enable the strongest available account protection, such as a unique password and multi-factor authentication. Store recovery codes separately from the password.
- Copy the deposit address and any destination tag exactly as displayed. Do not substitute an address from an old transaction or a message.
- Send a small test amount first when practical. Wait for the provider to show the deposit, then verify the same payment on the public ledger.
For a non-custodial software wallet
- Install the application from a source you have verified. Check the publisher, package name, permissions, and update history; fake wallets are designed to harvest recovery phrases.
- Create the account and display the recovery phrase or secret key only in the wallet’s secure setup flow. Do not photograph it, paste it into notes, email it, or enter it into a website.
- Write the backup on a durable medium and store it in a location protected from unauthorized access, fire, and water. Keep a second protected copy only if you can secure it equally well.
- Lock the application with a strong device passcode or wallet password. Keep the operating system and wallet software updated from authentic sources.
- Copy the public address from the wallet and perform a read-only lookup before funding. Verify that the address shown by the wallet matches the one returned by the ledger service.
For a hardware wallet
- Buy through a manufacturer-authorized channel and inspect packaging and device prompts. A prewritten recovery phrase is a red flag; the device should generate the phrase during setup.
- Initialize the device yourself, record the recovery material offline, and set a device PIN. Never accept a phrase supplied by a seller, support agent, or web page.
- Install only the wallet software required for the device and confirm current XRPL support. Feature support can change with firmware and integration updates.
- When signing, compare the destination address and amount on the hardware display, not just on the computer or phone. A secure device cannot correct an address you approve without checking.
- Keep the device and its backup in separate protected locations. The device is replaceable only if the recovery material remains available and valid.
Verify an XRP Ledger balance safely
The XRP Ledger Secure Signing documentation says: “All transactions, balances, and data in the XRP Ledger are public.” A balance check is therefore a public-data operation. It does not require a signature, wallet unlock, seed, secret key, or recovery phrase.
Recommended Free Tools
- Copy the public account address. Use the wallet’s receive or account screen. Copy the complete value, then inspect it visually; XRPL addresses are case-sensitive and usually begin with
r. - Choose a read-only source. Search the address in a reputable XRPL Explorer or use a trusted public server with the
account_infocommand. A service that only reads ledger data should not ask for signing credentials. - Confirm the returned address. Compare every character and its capitalization with the wallet’s address. Do not rely on a shortened display, account nickname, or QR label alone.
- Check the account state. Confirm that the result identifies the intended account and shows a current ledger result. If the explorer offers a confirmed or validated status, use that status rather than treating an unconfirmed submission as final.
- Read the balance correctly. The account’s
AccountRootentry contains aBalancefield represented as a string in drops. Use the XRPL unit conversion shown by your trusted tool and do not mistake a raw drops value for an XRP amount. - Account for reserve and obligations. The Accounts documentation currently states a 1 XRP reserve requirement. This figure is subject to change, so verify the live documentation before relying on it. Total balance is not automatically the amount available to spend; reserve and other account obligations affect what can be sent.
- Match the payment. Review the transaction history for the incoming payment, amount, sender, destination, and ledger status. If a provider uses a pooled address, also confirm the provider’s internal credit and any required destination tag.
- Stop if credentials are requested. Close any explorer or support page that asks for a seed, secret key, recovery phrase, or an unsolicited signature merely to display a balance.
Using account_info without turning a lookup into a payment
account_info is a read operation for an XRPL account. Use it with the public address through a trusted endpoint and inspect the returned account data. Do not paste secret material into a command, browser form, diagnostic tool, or chat window. If an application changes from displaying data to requesting a signature, pause and read exactly what transaction or permission it wants you to authorize.
Address formats, destination tags, and identity signals
Case-sensitive addresses
XRPL account addresses are case-sensitive, base58-encoded, and usually start with r. One changed character can direct a payment elsewhere. Always compare the full destination after copying and before confirming a transaction. For larger transfers, send a small test payment first when fees, reserve, and the recipient’s process make that practical.

X-addresses and destination tags
An X-address can package an account destination tag with the address. A wallet or exchange may instead display a conventional address and a separate tag. Use the format the receiving service requests. If a tag is required, include it exactly; an otherwise correct address may not be enough for the recipient to identify your deposit.
Domain verification
XRPL domain verification can associate a domain with an account through a domain-hosted xrp-ledger.toml file and an account’s Domain field. It is optional and intended as a transparency signal. Treat a verified domain as one identity check, not proof that the person requesting payment is trustworthy, that the transaction is reversible, or that the destination is free of compromise.

| Symptom | Likely cause | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| A balance page asks for a seed or secret key. | Phishing or a fake “verification” flow. | Leave immediately. A public lookup needs only the public address. If you entered credentials, treat the account as compromised and follow the wallet’s emergency procedures. |
| The explorer shows no account. | Wrong address, transcription error, unsupported network view, or an account that has not been created or funded. | Re-copy the address from the wallet, compare capitalization, confirm the service is showing XRPL data, and check the sending record. Do not fund a newly copied address until it matches. |
| The sender says a payment succeeded, but the recipient does not see credit. | Unconfirmed or failed transaction, wrong destination, missing destination tag, or a custodial provider’s delayed internal credit. | Inspect the transaction on the public ledger, including destination and tag. Then contact the recipient through its verified support channel without disclosing secret material. |
| The displayed XRP is lower than the expected spendable amount. | Reserve or another account obligation is included in the total balance. | Review the AccountRoot data and current reserve documentation before attempting another payment. |
| A hardware wallet cannot sign an XRPL transaction. | Unsupported device, firmware, wallet integration, or transaction feature. | Check current manufacturer and wallet documentation. Do not install unofficial firmware or export the secret key to bypass compatibility. |
| You lost a non-custodial device. | The device is gone, but access may still be recoverable from the original backup. | Restore only through the wallet’s authentic recovery flow on a clean device. If the backup is also lost, there is no provider recovery option. |
| A domain appears verified, but the payment request feels suspicious. | Domain verification is being treated as a guarantee rather than an identity signal. | Verify the recipient through an independent channel and confirm the exact address and tag before signing. |
How to monitor an account without signing transactions
You can monitor incoming transactions with a trustworthy public server or explorer when you are not submitting transactions. Bookmark the service only after verifying its source, and type or paste public addresses carefully. Consider keeping a separate read-only workflow for routine checks so you do not open the wallet’s signing interface unnecessarily.
Never let a support agent “help” by requesting remote access, a recovery phrase, or a screen share that reveals secret material. A legitimate balance check remains possible after the wallet is closed because the ledger data is public.
A final wallet-selection checklist
- Custody is explicit: you know who controls the secret key.
- The recovery path is realistic, documented, and tested before funds are deposited.
- Hardware or software storage matches your threat model and transaction frequency.
- Current XRPL network and feature support is confirmed from the wallet or device documentation.
- You know whether the account is individually controlled or part of a custodial pool.
- You can identify the public address, destination-tag requirements, and supported address format.
- You can check the account independently with an XRPL Explorer or
account_info. - You understand that public verification never requires a secret key or signature.
- You have checked the current reserve requirement and distinguish total balance from spendable balance.
- You review the exact destination and amount on the signing device or wallet before approving a payment.
The right choice is not the wallet with the longest feature list. It is the custody arrangement you can operate safely, recover when appropriate, and verify independently on the XRP Ledger. Choose custody first, confirm current XRPL compatibility second, and use the public address—not your secret credentials—to verify every incoming payment.
