For recording local broadcast channels in the U.S., the two options supported by the available product documentation are Tablo 4th Generation and ZapperBox M1. Both are over-the-air (OTA) DVRs: they need an antenna and a usable local signal, and they are not general-purpose replacements for a cable or satellite box. Choose Tablo for app-based viewing across compatible devices without a Tablo subscription, or consider ZapperBox if you want an HDMI-connected DVR with ATSC 3.0 support. Before buying either, check reception at your address, the tuner count you need, and any ongoing guide or DVR fees.

What an OTA DVR records—and what it does not

An OTA DVR records free broadcast television received through an antenna, such as local network channels available in your area. Reception depends on your location, terrain, obstructions, antenna type, and antenna placement; a channel count advertised by a manufacturer is not a guarantee that those channels will reach your home.

These recommendations are for antenna TV, not for recording every source shown on a television. Tablo explicitly says its 4th Generation device does not record cable or satellite channels and does not record subscription streaming services such as Netflix or Sling. The cited information does not establish either product as a recorder for paid streaming services.

  • Start with reception: You need an antenna and a usable signal from the local stations you want to record.
  • Check the viewing setup: Tablo needs internet service and a compatible viewing device. ZapperBox connects to a TV over HDMI.
  • Count simultaneous channels: The tuner limit applies to channels being watched or recorded at the same time.

Tablo 4th Generation vs. ZapperBox M1

The choice is mainly between an app-based network DVR and a dedicated HDMI-connected DVR. The specifications below are vendor-published; they are not independent reception or reliability test results.

Choose Tablo for app-based viewing and no Tablo subscription

Tablo 4th Generation is the more natural fit if you want to watch antenna channels on compatible devices around the home rather than use a DVR attached directly to one television. Its listed compatible platforms include Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV/Google TV, Samsung Tizen, and LG webOS. Confirm that the app is available for the particular device and model you own.

What to plan for

  • You need the Tablo device, an antenna, internet service, and a compatible smart TV or streaming device. Device-only bundles do not include an antenna.
  • Pick the tuner count based on how many channels your household may watch or record simultaneously: up to two with the two-tuner version, or up to four with the four-tuner version.
  • The vendor lists 50+ hours of onboard HD storage and support for 1–8 TB USB hard drives. Actual recording capacity can vary with the content recorded.
  • Tablo 4th Generation supports ATSC 1.0, not ATSC 3.0. Tablo says ATSC 1.0 broadcasts will continue through at least June 2027.

Tablo’s product information says there is no subscription cost for its apps, features, or guide data. That does not remove the need for internet service, an antenna, or a compatible viewing device.

How many tuners do you need?

A tuner is used to receive a channel for live viewing or recording. If one channel is being recorded while another is watched, the DVR needs to handle both at once. The stated limits are up to two simultaneous channels for Tablo’s two-tuner version and ZapperBox M1 dual tuner, and up to four for Tablo’s four-tuner version.

Think about overlapping schedules in your household, not just the number of televisions. A networked setup can make recorded or live programming available on multiple compatible devices, but it does not raise the DVR’s simultaneous-channel limit.

Check your setup before you buy

  1. Identify the channels you want. Check local OTA reception for your address, then choose an antenna and placement appropriate to the signal conditions. Neither DVR can compensate for a station that your antenna cannot receive.
  2. Decide where you want to watch. Choose Tablo if its app-based approach and your compatible devices fit your household. Choose an HDMI-connected DVR such as ZapperBox if you want a dedicated box attached to a TV.
  3. Estimate simultaneous use. Count the maximum number of different channels you expect to watch or record at the same time, then select a tuner configuration that meets that need.
  4. Check storage and power. Tablo lists onboard storage and a supported USB-drive range. For ZapperBox, confirm the drive type and whether your HDD has its own power or needs a powered hub.
  5. Verify service requirements and current terms. Tablo requires internet service and a compatible viewing device. For ZapperBox, confirm the live plan terms for the features and tuner configuration you want.
  6. Confirm availability and what the box includes. Product stock, prices, bundles, and included accessories can change. A Tablo device-only bundle does not include an antenna.

Which one should you pick?

  • Pick Tablo 4th Generation if you want app-based OTA viewing on compatible devices, need up to two or four simultaneous channels, and prefer no Tablo subscription fee for apps, features, or guide data.
  • Consider ZapperBox M1 if you want a dedicated HDMI-connected OTA DVR, ATSC 3.0 compatibility, and its storage and playback arrangement suits you—provided the model is in stock and the current plan terms fit your use.
  • Choose neither as a cable-box replacement if your main goal is to record cable, satellite, or paid streaming channels; the cited information does not establish these products for that job.
