Start with the fantasy you want to play, not a ranking of supposed “best” games. Choose Grand Theft Auto V for a modern criminal city sandbox, Watch Dogs for hacking and stealth, Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition for an undercover Hong Kong crime story built around close combat, or Red Dead Redemption 2 if an outlaw Western appeals more than an urban setting. Before buying, check the exact platform listing, edition and age-rating descriptors.
Choose by the kind of crime story and gameplay you want
“Open-world crime game” can describe very different experiences. One game might emphasize driving and the freedom to cause trouble in a contemporary city; another might make hacking, stealth or hand-to-hand fighting its signature activity. A third might put the player inside a police operation, while an outlaw Western trades city streets for a historical frontier. Decide which of those appeals to you before comparing editions or storefront pages.

The four useful starting points are Grand Theft Auto V for playing as criminals in fictional Los Santos; Watch Dogs and Watch Dogs 2 for urban action with hacking and systems-based approaches; Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition for an undercover police officer infiltrating a Hong Kong crime organization; and Red Dead Redemption 2 for an outlaw story in the American West of 1899. They are alternatives by mood and play loop, not interchangeable versions of the same game.
| Game | Setting and role | Best fit if you want | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto V | Fictional Los Santos; three criminals with intersecting stories | A contemporary criminal sandbox with broad action and vehicle-centered city play | The exact platform listing and current regional rating |
| Watch Dogs / Watch Dogs 2 | Urban open worlds; hacking-led action | Technology, stealth and ways to manipulate city systems alongside action | The specific game, edition and platform page |
| Watch Dogs: Legion | Open-world London; hacking, stealth and combat | A London setting and a mix of infiltration and action | Platform availability and the M-rated content descriptors in your region |
| Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition | Hong Kong; an undercover officer infiltrating a crime organization | A focused crime-drama premise and prominent hand-to-hand combat | That the listing is the Definitive Edition for your platform |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | American West in 1899; outlaw Arthur Morgan | A Western outlaw story, exploration and gunfights rather than a modern city | The platform and edition shown on the store page |
Use the shortlist as a way to identify your preferred experience, not as a claim that one game is objectively superior. A 2026 GamesRadar+ guide to GTA alternatives also includes Red Dead Redemption 2, Watch Dogs 2 and Sleeping Dogs; that is editorial selection, not a measured ranking.

Pick the setting and player role that suit you
Modern criminal freedom: Grand Theft Auto V
If you want to play a criminal in a contemporary-style city, Grand Theft Auto V is the most direct fit in this group. The ESRB describes an open-world action game in which players take the roles of three criminals whose stories intersect in fictional Los Santos. That premise makes it the clearest choice here for someone whose idea of a crime game is a city sandbox centered on criminal protagonists.
Choose it for that broad city-crime premise, rather than expecting the central activity to be hacking, undercover investigation or a historical Western. The ESRB summary supports the open-world setting and the intersecting criminal stories; it does not establish comparative map size, mission count or playtime. Check the ESRB’s Grand Theft Auto V rating page for the rating information before deciding whether it suits the intended player.
Hacking and urban systems: Watch Dogs and Watch Dogs 2
Choose the Watch Dogs line if you want technology to shape how you approach an urban environment. Ubisoft’s official Watch Dogs page describes hacking and manipulating city systems. Its Watch Dogs 2 page presents a dynamic open world and includes an edition comparison. These official descriptions establish hacking as the series’ defining distinction in this shortlist; they do not make the two games identical, so select the particular title and edition whose store page you intend to buy.
This is the more natural direction if the appeal of an open city is not only moving through it, but using technology and stealth as part of the action. If you prefer a setting specifically identified as London, consider Watch Dogs: Legion. PlayStation describes its London open world and cites accessibility features on the official PlayStation page. The ESRB describes hacking, stealth infiltration and combat on its rating page.
Undercover crime drama: Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition
Choose Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition if you want the player character to be caught between law enforcement and a criminal organization, and you particularly value close-quarters action. The ESRB’s rating summary says: “This is a third-person shooter in which players assume the role of an undercover police officer who must infiltrate a crime organization in Hong Kong.” The same ESRB entry notes hand-to-hand combat and graphic environmental kills. The undercover premise and brawling make this the clearest fit in the shortlist for a focused Hong Kong crime story built around physical confrontations.
The edition matters: Xbox describes the Definitive Edition as a remastered Xbox One open-world action adventure with previously released DLC integrated. That description applies to the Xbox listing, not necessarily every store’s version or platform compatibility. Confirm the product name and platform on the Xbox listing, and consult the ESRB rating summary for its content details.
Outlaw life beyond the city: Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 belongs on a GTA-alternative shortlist only if you are open to leaving the modern city behind. The ESRB identifies Arthur Morgan as an outlaw in 1899 and describes traversal through an open-world Western. Its central appeal is therefore a historical outlaw setting, not a contemporary urban crime fantasy. Consider it when exploration and a Western atmosphere are as important to you as the criminal premise.
Rockstar’s store page lists a PC version and an Ultimate Edition; that establishes those options on the cited publisher page, not a complete list of current platforms or every edition sold elsewhere. Check the Rockstar store page for its current product choices and the ESRB rating page for content information. PlayStation also maintains a title page; neither listing should be treated as a universal compatibility chart.
Match the main activity to your preferred play loop
Genre labels can conceal the difference that matters most once you are actually playing: what kind of action you want to repeat. Use the following distinctions to narrow the choice.
- Broad city-criminal sandbox: choose Grand Theft Auto V if you want the combination of a fictional modern city, criminal protagonists and open-world action.
- Hacking and stealth: choose Watch Dogs or Watch Dogs 2 if manipulating city systems and taking a technology-oriented approach sounds more appealing than a crime story focused mainly on brawling or a Western setting. Consider Watch Dogs: Legion when its London setting is part of the appeal.
- Hand-to-hand action: choose Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition if close combat and an undercover infiltration premise are priorities. Read its rating descriptors as well as its story summary before buying.
- Western outlaw action and exploration: choose Red Dead Redemption 2 if a 1899 setting and outlaw protagonist fit your taste better than a contemporary city.
These are supported differences in premise, setting and described mechanics—not a numerical comparison of combat depth, driving quality, stealth difficulty or world scale. The cited pages do not provide a common test or standardized measurement for those qualities, so decide from the documented premise and any additional platform-specific information available to you rather than treating a broad genre label as a guarantee.
Decide how much you value story versus free roaming
Every game in this shortlist has an open-world framing, but that alone does not tell you how much of the experience is story-led or how much time you can spend roaming. Use the available premises to determine which kind of story you want to inhabit, then inspect the exact platform listing for the activities and edition details relevant to you.

- Urban action through technology: Ubisoft identifies hacking and manipulation of city systems for Watch Dogs, while its Watch Dogs 2 page presents a dynamic open world and compares editions. Use the game’s own page to review those edition differences rather than assuming they match another title.
- Undercover infiltration: Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition has the most explicit single-character crime-operation premise here: an undercover officer infiltrates an organization in Hong Kong.
- Historical outlaw story: Red Dead Redemption 2 places Arthur Morgan in the American West of 1899. Choose it for that period and role, not because “open world” makes it a modern-city substitute.
The supplied official descriptions do not establish relative story length, amount of optional content, map size or the balance between missions and free roaming. Avoid using an unsupported playtime or world-size claim to make the decision. If those details are decisive, look for them on the exact game and edition page for the platform you plan to use.

A title page for one platform does not prove that the game is available on every current system. The official pages cited here are selected storefront or publisher listings, not a complete, continuously updated compatibility matrix. Before purchase, make sure the product page matches your hardware, account region and desired edition.
- Search for the exact game name. Distinguish titles within a series, especially Watch Dogs, Watch Dogs 2 and Watch Dogs: Legion. Similar names do not mean the same game.
- Confirm your platform and generation on the listing. For example, the cited Xbox page calls Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition a remastered Xbox One game. Do not infer support for another Xbox generation or a different platform from that one page.
- Read the edition description. The Xbox description says previously released DLC is integrated into its Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition listing. Rockstar lists a PC version and Ultimate Edition for Red Dead Redemption 2. Those details are specific to the named publisher or platform listings.
- Check region and availability at checkout. Storefront catalogues and product availability can change, and the cited pages use different regional paths. Confirm that the page is valid for your account region and that the displayed product is the one you intend to buy.
- Review the purchase details on the final screen. Match the title, edition and platform again before completing a transaction; do not rely on a search-result label or a general franchise page alone.
The linked storefront and publisher pages reflect listings available on October 13, 2026; prices and availability can change. No price comparison is offered here, because the cited evidence does not establish a consistent price, region or sale period across the games.
Use age ratings and content descriptors, not genre labels
“Crime game” is not enough information to judge suitability for a younger player. Ratings are regional, and content can differ substantially from one title to another. Check the current rating for the exact game and the rating system used in your country; read the descriptors rather than relying only on a letter or age number.
- Watch Dogs: Legion: the ESRB assigns it M (Mature 17+) and describes intense violence and other mature material. Read its full ESRB entry rather than assuming the broad series label describes its content.
- Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition: the ESRB entry specifically notes hand-to-hand combat and graphic environmental kills, alongside the undercover-crime premise. See the full rating summary.
- Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2: consult each game’s ESRB page for Grand Theft Auto V and ESRB page for Red Dead Redemption 2 for the rating and descriptors attached to that title.
Ratings-board pages are useful for content screening; they do not establish how difficult a game is, whether its story is suitable for a particular person, or what another country’s classification says. If the player lives outside the ESRB’s region, consult the relevant local rating authority and the store page shown to that account.
A quick decision path
- Want a modern city and criminal protagonists? Start with Grand Theft Auto V.
- Want hacking and stealth to shape urban action? Start with Watch Dogs or Watch Dogs 2; choose Watch Dogs: Legion if its London setting is the draw.
- Want an undercover police premise and close combat? Look at Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, then verify the platform-specific edition and read its content descriptors.
- Want an outlaw story but are not committed to a city? Consider Red Dead Redemption 2 for its 1899 Western setting.
- Before checkout: confirm platform, exact edition, regional availability and the appropriate age-rating information.
There is no single best open-world crime game independent of taste. The strongest match is the one whose setting, player role and repeated action loop are the ones you actually want—and whose exact listing fits your platform and content requirements.
