The right choice depends on the learner’s specific gap, course, schedule, access needs and budget—not on whether a service is simply “online.” Choose a live tutor when the learner needs diagnosis, two-way explanation or accountability. Choose an app when the main need is regular, independent practice with dependable feedback. A combination can work when practice and human coaching solve different problems. Start with one measurable goal, test the option for a defined period, and check whether the learner can solve new problems or explain the idea with less help.

Start with the learner, not the product

Before comparing tutors or apps, write down what the learner actually needs. “Needs help with math” is too broad to guide a purchase. A useful starting profile includes:

  • Level and course: grade, examination or curriculum, current unit, and the next assessment.
  • Specific gap: for example, place value, fraction operations, linear equations, proof, or interpreting graphs.
  • Observed difficulty: calculation accuracy, reading a word problem, choosing a method, explaining reasoning, working speed, confidence, or remembering procedures.
  • Schedule: times the learner can attend live sessions and the amount of independent practice that is realistic each week.
  • Access and accessibility: available devices, stable connectivity, screen-size or audio needs, language support, and whether an adult must help with setup or reading feedback.
  • Budget: an amount the family can sustain for the whole period needed, including any recurring subscription, lesson fee, materials or equipment.
  • Support required: immediate answers, a patient explanation, motivation, exam strategy, or a way to coordinate with the classroom teacher.

Ask the learner to complete a few ordinary class problems without help and to explain one answer aloud. The errors and explanations are more useful than a marketing label such as “adaptive” or “AI-powered.”

Decide whether the first problem is diagnosis, practice or accountability

  • Diagnosis: Choose human instruction first if nobody can yet explain why the learner is getting problems wrong.
  • Practice: An app may be enough when the method is understood but fluency is low and the learner can work independently.
  • Accountability: A tutor, scheduled check-in or involved adult may be necessary when the learner regularly avoids practice.
  • Course alignment: If an assessment is close, prioritize a tutor or platform that can work from the actual class sequence and assignments rather than an unrelated skill path.

Decision axis Live online tutor App or platform Question to ask
Instruction Can respond in real time, probe reasoning and change the explanation. May provide structured explanations, examples and guided practice. Does the learner need interactive diagnosis or mainly more practice?
Alignment Can target the learner’s course when the tutor prepares and coordinates. May follow a fixed curriculum or skill sequence. Does it match the learner’s current school topic and level?
Feedback A human can ask the learner to explain a step and address a misconception. Feedback depends on the tool’s design and may be limited to marking an answer. Will feedback explain the error, or only say right or wrong?
Progress Can be discussed and adjusted session by session. May provide usage, mastery or completion reports. Is there a meaningful goal and a way to check transfer to new problems?
Practical fit Requires recurring appointments and a fee for each session or package. Requires a compatible device, connectivity and enough motivation to use it. What schedule, access and total cost can the family sustain?
Evidence Results depend on the tutor, intervention design and implementation. Results depend on the platform, content and implementation. Was the claim independently evaluated in a setting resembling this learner?

When a live online tutor is the better first choice

A tutor is most useful when the learner’s reasoning needs to be observed and adapted in the moment. A skilled tutor can ask, “How did you decide to start?” or “What does this number represent?” and use the answer to distinguish a careless slip from a foundational misconception. They can switch between a diagram, concrete example, symbolic notation and a verbal explanation, then connect the work to the learner’s regular lessons.

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) defines one-to-one tuition as “a teacher, teaching assistant or other adult giving a pupil intensive individual support.” Its toolkit review, last updated in July 2021, summarizes 123 studies and reports approximately five additional months’ progress on average. The estimate is an average across varied programs, and the EEF cautions that effects in mathematics appear lower than in literacy. Tutoring is more promising when it is additional to, and explicitly linked with, normal lessons; progress should be monitored rather than assumed.

Questions that reveal teaching quality

Do not treat a degree, certificate or impressive profile as proof of fit. The available evidence does not establish a universal credential requirement. Instead, ask a prospective tutor:

  • Which topics and age groups do you teach, and how would you identify the learner’s current starting point?
  • How do you get a learner to explain their reasoning rather than guess?
  • What would you do if the learner can perform a procedure but cannot explain it?
  • Can you work from the learner’s textbook, class sequence, homework or examination specification?
  • What will you record after each session, and how will you decide what to revisit?
  • How will you communicate a pattern of difficulty to a parent or classroom teacher, with the learner’s permission?
  • What happens when technology fails, the learner is absent, or a session is not a good fit?

What a useful session looks like

A strong session has a specific objective, a short check of prerequisite knowledge, time for the learner to do the thinking, and a closing task that shows whether the idea transfers. The tutor should be able to explain the next practice step in plain language. A session in which the adult does every problem while the learner watches may feel smooth but provides little evidence of learning.

When an app or learning platform is the better first choice

An app can be a good fit when the learner understands the concept but needs frequent, low-friction practice, immediate routine feedback or a structured sequence. It can also make short practice periods easier to schedule than a live appointment. The trade-off is that the tool may not recognize an unusual misconception, a language issue or a wrong method that happens to produce a correct answer.

Inspect the lesson and error feedback

Try several problems, including one the learner is likely to miss. Check whether the platform:

  • Explains a concept before demanding repeated answers.
  • Uses clear mathematical language and representations that make the quantity or relationship visible.
  • Distinguishes a calculation slip from a misconception and offers a useful next step.
  • Allows the learner to show or select a method instead of rewarding answer entry alone.
  • Revisits prerequisite skills without trapping the learner in an unexplained loop.
  • Lets an adult see enough work to discuss it, rather than displaying only a streak or completion percentage.

The Institute of Education Sciences’ What Works Clearinghouse says, “There’s no single answer to that broad question” of what works across mathematics. Its elementary intervention guide (March 2021) emphasizes systematic instruction, clear mathematical language, and well-chosen concrete and semi-concrete representations. These are questions to ask of an app’s lessons and feedback, not a requirement that every product use one identical format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check curriculum alignment

Compare the app’s skill names and sequence with the learner’s current class materials. A platform that is excellent for arithmetic fluency may be a poor choice for a learner who needs algebraic modeling or proof. Look for a way to select a grade, course or topic without hiding the underlying skill map. If the app cannot show what the learner is expected to master next, its progress score may be difficult to interpret.

What the available evidence actually shows

Results from one program do not establish what every tutor or app will achieve. Keep the study population, setting, comparison and outcome attached to each number.

Program or evidence Setting and design Reported result How to interpret it
EEF one-to-one tuition toolkit 123 studies included; toolkit review last updated July 2021. Approximately five additional months’ progress on average. An average across varied interventions; mathematics effects appear lower than literacy, and impact is more likely when support links to regular lessons and is monitored.
Affordable Maths Tuition evaluation EEF evaluation of a specific online Key Stage 2 mathematics program; report uploaded in 2017. 0 months’ progress on the measured attainment outcome compared with business-as-usual teaching and support. It found no evidence of an attainment impact for that program and implementation. It is not evidence that all online tutoring fails.
Khan Academy plus Khanmigo roundup Approximately 6,900 students in 18 Tennessee middle schools, in daily school intervention periods. Khan Academy’s vendor-authored roundup is dated February 7, 2026; the page also displays August 28, 2026. About 0.06 standard deviations per school year, 0.08 in year two, and an implied 0.14 standard deviations with a full year of active participation. The reported gains were mostly driven by practice; students messaged the AI tutor in only 17% of exercise sessions when they made a mistake. This is a school intervention, not a general estimate for home users or every app.
Maths-Whizz intelligent tutoring evaluation Trial completed September 2026 across 63 English schools, alongside usual mathematics lessons. One additional month’s progress in mathematics on average for pupils allocated to the program; the trial summary recommends 45–60 minutes a week. A program- and context-specific estimate that depended on sufficient technology, staff support and an implementation plan.

These findings support a cautious conclusion: online delivery is a channel, not a guarantee. The quality of explanation, practice, alignment, implementation and follow-up matters more than the presence of a video call or an adaptive algorithm.

How to run a useful, time-bounded trial

A trial should test a learning decision, not merely whether the learner enjoys the interface. The following is a practical family process, not a validated evaluation protocol.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose one observable goal. For example, “solve two-step linear equations with at least 80% accuracy and explain the inverse operation,” rather than “get better at algebra.”
  2. Record a starting point. Keep a small set of unfamiliar problems at the target level and note accuracy, method, time and the amount of prompting required.
  3. Set a sustainable routine. Agree on session length, weekly frequency and who will help with login, equipment or homework. Regular short sessions are easier to monitor than irregular intensive bursts.
  4. Use the selected tutor or app as intended. Give a tutor the relevant class materials; configure an app to the right level and topic. Do not judge a platform using exercises far below or above the learner’s course.
  5. Collect learning evidence. Save representative work, not just badges or minutes used. Note recurring errors, explanations and whether help decreases.
  6. Recheck with new problems. At the review point, use problems that were not copied from practice. Ask the learner to explain one solution aloud.
  7. Decide, adjust or stop. Continue if the learner is making independent progress toward the goal. Change the explanation, sequence, tutor or practice load if the learner is merely accumulating activity without transfer.

  • What data, recordings or messages are retained, who can view them, and how can a parent request deletion? Read the current privacy and safeguarding terms before enrollment.

A technically impressive service that the learner cannot access consistently is not a good fit. Include setup time and adult support in the real weekly cost.

Budget for the total commitment

Rates and terms vary by provider and were not established in the available evidence, so do not compare a headline subscription with a single lesson fee as if they were equivalent. Calculate the expected cost for the full trial period and include:

  • Recurring tutor sessions or platform charges.
  • Minimum contracts, cancellation rules, assessment or registration fees.
  • Required device, headset, internet or printed materials.
  • Adult time for supervision, troubleshooting and reviewing progress.
  • The opportunity cost of a schedule the learner cannot reliably keep.

A lower-cost app is not a saving if the learner needs constant adult prompting or still requires separate tutoring to understand errors. Conversely, paying for a tutor may be unnecessary when a learner can practice independently and show steady transfer.

When a combined approach makes sense

Pairing an app with a tutor can divide the work sensibly: the platform supplies frequent practice and the tutor analyzes misconceptions, adjusts the sequence and connects practice to classwork. Set separate responsibilities so the two parts do not duplicate one another. For example, the learner might complete two short practice sessions, while the tutor reviews the error pattern and teaches one strategy that the next practice set reinforces.

Common warning signs and fixes

The learner gets many answers right but cannot explain a method

Ask for a worked explanation and include unfamiliar problems. Reduce hints and check whether the learner can choose a method independently. If not, use a tutor or a platform with richer reasoning prompts rather than more repetition.

The tutor talks most of the session

Request think-alouds, wait time and learner-generated steps. Share a concrete objective and ask for a short independent exit problem. If the pattern persists, the teaching fit is poor even if the tutor is pleasant and knowledgeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app reports progress but school performance does not change

Compare the app’s skill sequence with classwork and inspect transfer to new problems. Usage and mastery dashboards are not substitutes for solving the learner’s actual course tasks. Add human diagnosis or change the sequence if the gap is a mismatch.

Technology or pacing interrupts learning

Test the full setup before the first paid period, keep a backup contact method, and agree on what to do during an outage. In the Affordable Maths Tuition evaluation, teachers reported perceived benefits for comprehension, verbal fluency and confidence, but the evaluation also recorded distraction, pacing difficulties and technical implementation challenges.

A decision checklist

  • We can state the learner’s current course, specific skill gap and target outcome.
  • We know whether the first need is diagnosis, practice, accountability or course alignment.
  • The tutor or app can show how it elicits reasoning and responds to errors.
  • The content matches the learner’s level and regular lessons.
  • The device, connection and accessibility features work in the learner’s real study environment.
  • The schedule and total cost are sustainable for the entire trial period.
  • We have a baseline, a review date and new problems to check transfer.
  • We will change or stop the service if activity rises without independent progress.

What about a printed workbook?

A grade-level practice workbook can be a useful supplement when the learner benefits from written work away from a screen. Match it to the learner’s current course and topic, and check that answers include enough working or explanation to diagnose errors. The What Works Clearinghouse materials support instructional materials as part of mathematics learning but do not test or recommend a particular commercial workbook.

Make the choice testable

Choose a live tutor when the learner needs responsive explanation, misconception diagnosis or sustained accountability. Choose an app when the learner can work independently and needs structured, repeatable practice with meaningful feedback. Combine them only when each solves a distinct problem. In every case, judge the choice by independent performance on new mathematics—not by the number of minutes online, a streak, a polished interface or a promise that “online” automatically means effective.
