The right NFT marketplace is the one that supports your NFT’s blockchain and wallet, shows a transparent total cost, handles creator earnings the way you expect, and gives you a transaction you can safely verify before signing. Compare the specific collection and transaction—not just a marketplace’s headline fee—because platform charges, gas, royalties, provider fees, and who pays each cost can all vary.

Start with the blockchain and the transaction you actually need

An NFT marketplace is an interface for listing, buying, selling, minting, or swapping blockchain-based assets. It does not make every NFT, wallet, or network interchangeable. The first decision is therefore not “Which marketplace is cheapest?” but “Which marketplace supports this NFT, on this chain, for this transaction type, with my wallet?”

Write down these five details before comparing services:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Blockchain: Ethereum, Solana, or another network on which the NFT and its contract exist.
  • Asset and collection: the exact collection and contract address, not merely a name or image.
  • Your role: buyer, seller, creator, or a user minting from a primary drop.
  • Transaction: fixed-price purchase, offer acceptance, listing, mint, or swap.
  • Wallet: the wallet software and account type you intend to connect.

A service can support your chain but not your preferred wallet connection, or support your wallet for viewing while lacking the transaction support you need. Compatibility on one marketplace says nothing about compatibility on another.

Compare the complete cost, not the advertised marketplace fee

Your final cost can contain several independent charges. Separate them in your calculation so a low platform fee does not hide a high network or provider cost.

Cost component What it pays for What to verify
Marketplace fee The platform’s charge for a sale, mint, swap, or other service Current percentage, transaction type, chain, collection, and whether the figure is promotional
Blockchain gas Network computation and settlement paid to validators Estimated amount, network congestion, currency required, and which party pays
Creator earnings A stated share intended for the creator on a primary or secondary sale Whether earnings are optional or contract-enforced and the percentage shown for the item
Card, swap, or provider charge Payment processing, fiat on-ramp, or an outside service used at checkout Any additional amount displayed before confirmation and the provider responsible

Fees are volatile. Treat dated help-center numbers as examples rather than permanent prices, and use the live listing or checkout screen immediately before signing. OpenSea’s May 12, 2026 help article, for example, says it typically charges 1% for NFT sales, 10% for minting in a primary drop, and 0% for swaps. The same article warns that third-party provider fees can still apply and that prices may change at any time. Those figures do not establish the charge for every collection or future transaction.

Magic Eden’s March 9, 2026 help article describes its Solana marketplace as charging 0% for listings and 2% on transactions. Do not apply those numbers automatically to every Magic Eden chain, product, or checkout; check the current terms for the NFT and network you are using.

Why a generic percentage can be misleading

A marketplace can have collection-specific fees, and an order can involve a different fee from the platform’s general headline. OpenSea’s developer documentation provides a way to retrieve applicable collection fees, illustrating why the intended collection and actual order matter more than a generic comparison chart.

For a purchase, calculate the amount the seller receives, your marketplace charge, creator earnings if shown, gas, and any payment-provider amount. For a sale, calculate the amount you will receive after the marketplace fee, creator earnings selected or enforced by the contract, and any gas you must pay. The wallet’s confirmation screen is the final authority for the transaction you are about to sign.

Understand who pays gas and when

Gas is paid to blockchain validators, not necessarily to the marketplace. Its amount changes with network demand and with the computation required by the transaction. OpenSea’s guidance says buyers pay gas for fixed-price purchases, while sellers pay gas when accepting offers. It also notes that listing approvals may require gas and that transaction requirements vary.

  • Fixed-price purchase: normally inspect the buyer-side gas estimate shown at checkout.
  • Accepting an offer: normally inspect the seller-side gas estimate before accepting.
  • First listing or approval: an approval transaction may require gas before the listing itself.
  • Busy network: congestion can raise the estimate or delay confirmation.

Do not treat “free listing” as “free transaction.” A 0% listing fee can coexist with a network approval cost, and a 0% swap fee can coexist with gas or a provider charge. Confirm the network’s native currency balance before starting.

Evaluate royalties as a contract and checkout behavior

“Royalties” are often called creator earnings, but a creator’s preferred percentage is not automatically paid on every resale. Three separate decisions can affect the result:

  1. Creator preference: the percentage the creator sets for the collection or item.
  2. Marketplace setting: whether the seller is asked to include that amount at checkout.
  3. Contract enforcement: whether the NFT’s smart contract and the marketplace’s payment mechanism can require the amount.

OpenSea distinguishes optional from enforced creator earnings. If earnings are optional, the seller can choose whether to include them. Its enforcement mechanism supports compatible ERC721-C or ERC1155-C configurations. OpenSea says that setup works on OpenSea and on other marketplaces using LimitBreak’s Payment Processor, currently including Magic Eden; other marketplaces may use a different enforcement method.

Magic Eden’s cited Solana guidance says creators set the royalty amount and it is paid after a sale if the trader honors it or if the metadata enforces it. It directs users to inspect the item-detail page for the stated percentage. That guidance applies to the described Solana marketplace context, not automatically to every chain or marketplace.

What buyers should check

  • Open the verified collection and inspect the contract identity, not just the artwork or seller name.
  • Read the item page for the stated creator-earnings percentage.
  • Review the checkout breakdown to see whether creator earnings are included.
  • Read the wallet prompt and confirm the total before signing.

What creators should check

  • Confirm the percentage recorded in the collection’s contract or metadata.
  • Determine whether the contract uses an enforcement-compatible standard.
  • List on venues that support that enforcement mechanism if guaranteed payment is important.
  • Test the actual checkout path and verify the amount shown before announcing a sale.

Never advertise a royalty as guaranteed unless the contract and the participating marketplace payment systems can enforce it. A marketplace’s display of a preferred percentage alone is not proof of payment on every secondary sale.

Check wallet and chain support before transferring anything

The wallet must work with both the marketplace and the NFT’s blockchain. Wallet support also includes the connection protocol, account type, and ability to display the transaction you are being asked to sign.

OpenSea’s July 17, 2026 wallet article says it supports wallets compatible with EIP-6963 and names MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, and Robinhood Wallet as examples. It also says OpenSea did not support multisignature wallets at that time. Availability and transaction support can change, and those statements do not establish support on another marketplace.

Use this compatibility check before funding an account or moving an NFT:

  1. Confirm the NFT’s blockchain and contract address from the collection’s authoritative information.
  2. Open the marketplace’s current wallet-support page and check the exact wallet connection method.
  3. Check whether your account is standard, hardware-backed, or multisignature and whether that account type is supported.
  4. Connect only through the marketplace’s official domain and verify the network selected in both applications.
  5. Send a small test amount only when you understand the destination and network; never bridge or transfer an NFT merely because a wallet button appears.
  6. Before signing, verify the recipient, asset, network, token amount, and permissions in the wallet.

OpenSea’s FAQ includes instructions for switching wallets among supported blockchains. Use the marketplace’s current instructions for the exact chain rather than assuming a network switch in your wallet changes the NFT’s blockchain.

Use security features, but do not outsource judgment

A marketplace can provide verification labels, warnings, and support channels, but it cannot protect a user who approves a malicious contract or reveals a recovery phrase. Evaluate the service and your own operating habits together.

  • Download wallet software only from the wallet provider’s official site.
  • Never disclose a secret recovery phrase or private key. OpenSea states: “Your wallet’s secret recovery phrase is private to you and should never be shared, even with those you trust.”
  • Limit smart-contract approvals to what you need and revoke approvals you no longer use when appropriate.
  • Navigate to the marketplace directly instead of using an unsolicited link.
  • Read every wallet prompt, including permissions, token amounts, and destination addresses.
  • Verify the collection contract and transaction history before buying.

Recognize phishing and fake buyer support

OpenSea’s July 27, 2026 phishing guidance describes messages that imitate buyer errors, create urgency, send you to a site requesting a wallet signature, or demand a “fee” to complete a sale. It says, “We won’t DM you first on social media.” Treat an unsolicited buyer-support message, an emailed signing link, or a request for a release fee as a warning sign.

If a message claims your sale failed, stop and verify independently:

  1. Do not click its link or reply with wallet details.

  3. Check the listing and account status inside the marketplace.
  4. Use only the official support channel reached from that site.
  5. Disconnect the wallet and review approvals if you already signed something you did not understand.

A legitimate marketplace will not need your seed phrase, password, or private key to resolve a sale. No hardware device can make a phishing site safe or turn an unexplained signature into a safe one.

When a hardware wallet is worth considering

A hardware wallet can keep signing keys separated from a general-purpose computer and may add a useful security layer for users holding valuable NFTs or cryptocurrency. OpenSea recommends considering one as an added layer for funds and NFTs.

It is an accessory, not a guarantee. You can still approve a malicious contract, enter a recovery phrase into a phishing site, or confirm the wrong address on the device. Buy and initialize hardware only through the manufacturer’s official channel, keep the recovery phrase offline, and verify the transaction details on the device’s own screen when available.

Compare marketplaces by use case

Your situation Most important checks Common mistake
Buying a fixed-price NFT Supported chain, wallet connection, total checkout, gas estimate, creator-earnings line, collection contract Comparing only the marketplace percentage
Making or accepting an offer Who pays gas, expiration, approval requirements, final amount received, contract permissions Assuming the buyer pays every network cost
Listing an NFT Listing fee, approval transaction, duration, creator-earnings setting, supported wallet account type Calling a 0% listing fee cost-free
Minting a primary drop Mint fee, marketplace fee, network gas, drop contract, wallet funding, provider charges Applying a secondary-sale fee to a mint
Creating a collection Royalty standard, enforcement compatibility, supported payment processors, chain, metadata permanence, creator payout display Promising enforced royalties from a preferred percentage alone
Using a multisignature wallet Explicit marketplace support, signing flow, account display, chain compatibility Assuming standard wallet support includes multisignature accounts

There is no universally best marketplace. A collector who needs a Solana listing, a creator who depends on contract-enforced earnings, and a buyer using a multisignature account can reasonably choose different services even when they are looking at similar artwork.

A repeatable marketplace-selection process

1. Identify the exact asset and chain

Record the collection name, contract address, token identifier, and blockchain. Verify them through the collection’s authoritative channels. A copied image or similar collection name is not sufficient proof of identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Filter for wallet and account compatibility

Remove any marketplace that does not support your chain, wallet connection method, or account type. Confirm this before transferring funds or connecting a valuable wallet.

3. Recreate the intended transaction

Open the actual item, listing, offer, or mint page. Do not compare a sale fee with a mint fee or a swap fee. Use the transaction you will perform.

4. Record every charge

Write down the marketplace fee, creator earnings, gas estimate, card or provider fee, currency, and who pays each amount. Mark figures that are optional, collection-specific, promotional, or subject to change.

5. Inspect royalty treatment

Check the item page and contract information. Distinguish the creator’s preferred percentage from the amount the seller selected and from contract-level enforcement.

  • EASY ASSET MANAGEMENT: Monitor and transact seamlessly with Trezor Suite, our user-friendly desktop and mobile app

6. Validate the signing request

Read the wallet prompt from start to finish. Confirm the network, asset, amount, recipient, contract, and permissions. Reject any request whose purpose you cannot explain in plain language.

7. Keep a record

Save the transaction hash, final fee breakdown, and collection contract address. This makes it easier to reconcile a sale, investigate a failed transaction, or report a phishing attempt without relying on a message sent to you.

Check before you transact

Use this final checklist immediately before confirming:

  • Current marketplace fee for this exact transaction
  • Network gas estimate and the party responsible for it
  • Any card, swap, or third-party provider charge
  • Creator-earnings percentage and whether it is optional or enforced
  • Collection identity, contract address, token ID, and transaction history
  • Wallet and account compatibility with the selected blockchain
  • Correct domain and independently opened support channel
  • Wallet signing request, permissions, recipient, asset, and total amount

How to handle a failed or suspicious transaction

The checkout total changed

Stop before signing. Refresh the official listing, check whether the network became congested, and look for a provider or collection-specific charge. Do not accept a new amount merely because a message says the transaction will otherwise fail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The wallet shows an unfamiliar approval

Reject it unless you can identify the contract and explain why the approval is required. Review the marketplace’s official transaction documentation and inspect existing approvals before trying again.

An NFT does not appear after a transfer

Confirm the destination network and address, then check the transaction hash on the relevant blockchain explorer. Do not send a second copy until the first transaction’s status and destination are understood.

A supposed buyer asks for a fee or seed phrase

Do not pay or disclose anything. Close the conversation, open the marketplace independently, and report the message through its official support path.

Bottom line: choose the transaction, not the logo

Choose the marketplace that fits the NFT’s chain, your wallet and account type, the transaction you intend to perform, and the royalty behavior you actually need. Compare the live all-in total and who pays each charge, then verify the collection and signing request independently. Fee percentages and wallet support can change, and neither a marketplace safety feature nor a hardware wallet replaces careful verification.
