If you want Apple’s built-in features for sharing files, continuing tasks, copying and pasting, or using your phone from your Mac, start by looking at iPhone. The right choice depends less on a vague promise of “compatibility” and more on the specific tasks you want and whether your current Mac meets each feature’s requirements.
Check your Mac and its operating system against Apple’s requirements before choosing an iPhone. Some features work across a range of compatible devices; others, especially iPhone Mirroring, have specific hardware, software, account, and regional limits.

Choose based on what you want to do between devices
Apple groups several different tasks under Continuity. A feature’s name does not guarantee that every Mac and iPhone supports it, so identify the task first and verify the requirements for your devices in Apple’s Continuity overview.

| Send photos, documents, videos, websites, or other items to a nearby device | AirDrop | Apple describes AirDrop as a way to share these items. Confirm requirements for your exact devices in Apple’s Continuity overview. |
| Start a supported task on one device and continue on another | Handoff | Requires compatible devices, the same Apple Account, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and Handoff enabled. Supported apps and feature-specific requirements also apply. |
| Copy on iPhone and paste on Mac, or the reverse | Universal Clipboard | Requires compatible devices, the same Apple Account, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff. |
| Use iPhone as a Mac webcam or microphone | Continuity Camera | Check Apple’s current device requirements for the exact Mac and iPhone combination. |
| Use iPhone apps from the Mac | iPhone Mirroring | Has specific operating-system, Mac hardware, account, wireless, proximity, lock-state, and regional requirements. |
| Handle calls or texts on Mac, or share iPhone’s internet connection | Calls and texts on Mac or Personal Hotspot | Check Apple’s current setup requirements; carrier and plan restrictions may also apply to hotspot use. |
Check whether your Mac supports the features you care about
Before shopping, find your Mac model and its installed macOS version, then compare them with Apple’s requirements for each feature you intend to use. This matters because the Mac you already own can be the limiting factor: buying a newer iPhone does not make an unsupported Mac feature available.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
For iPhone Mirroring, verify every requirement
Apple’s iPhone Mirroring requirements specify macOS Sequoia 15 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon or the Apple T2 Security Chip, plus iOS 18 or later and a passcode on the iPhone. Both devices must use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication, have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, and be near one another; the iPhone must be locked. Apple says the feature is currently unavailable in the European Union, so check the current regional status before relying on it.
“Recent Mac” is not a sufficiently precise compatibility check: confirm the model and chip or security hardware, as well as the installed operating system. Apple’s requirements guide describes “nearby” as within 30 feet (10 meters). It also notes that the iPhone camera and microphone cannot be used with iPhone Mirroring, and that some Continuity features, including Continuity Camera and AirPlay, are unavailable on the Mac while Mirroring is in use.

For Handoff and Universal Clipboard, check setup as well as compatibility
Handoff requires Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the same Apple Account on both devices, and Handoff enabled. Apple’s Handoff guide also notes that supported apps and feature-specific requirements matter.

Use this buying process
- List your everyday tasks. Decide whether you need file sharing, task handoff, copy and paste, iPhone as a webcam, app mirroring, calls and texts on Mac, or Personal Hotspot.
- Check your Mac first. Identify its model and installed macOS version, then verify Apple’s requirements for each task. For iPhone Mirroring, confirm the Mac’s chip or T2 Security Chip and macOS version.
- Check account, wireless, and settings conditions. For Handoff and Universal Clipboard, make sure you can use the same Apple Account on both devices and enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Universal Clipboard also depends on Handoff being on.
- Confirm regional and carrier conditions. Check whether a feature is available where you live. If you plan to use Personal Hotspot, verify the restrictions and terms of your local carrier and plan.
- Compare iPhone models for your own priorities. Once compatibility is clear, weigh current price, size and weight, battery needs, camera requirements, storage, and expected software-support period. Verify those details for the models currently for sale; compatibility alone does not identify a best-value or best-overall model.
- Check accessories for the chosen generation. If you need a charger or cable, confirm that it matches the selected iPhone’s connector and charging requirements rather than assuming accessories are interchangeable.
What to do if a feature does not work
- AirDrop: Recheck the current requirements for both devices in Apple’s Continuity overview.
- Handoff or Universal Clipboard: Confirm device compatibility, the same Apple Account, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and that Handoff is enabled. For Universal Clipboard, also verify that the devices meet its specific requirements.
- iPhone Mirroring: Check macOS and iOS versions, Mac hardware, the passcode, the shared Apple Account and two-factor authentication, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, proximity, and whether the iPhone is locked. Consider regional availability as well.
- Calls, texts, or hotspot: Review Apple’s current setup guidance for the feature and check whether your carrier or plan limits hotspot use.
