Choose an iPhone app subscription by comparing the regular renewal price, the actual billing interval, and the features you will use after any introductory offer ends. A low trial price or a monthly-looking figure is not enough: confirm what will be charged next, when the offer ends, and who will bill you. If you decide not to continue, cancel an Apple-billed subscription in Settings > your name > Subscriptions at least 24 hours before a trial ends.
The decision in one sentence
An app subscription is worth keeping only when its standard renewal cost and commitment match the value you expect to receive throughout every billing period. Read the offer details before confirming, record the date the introductory period ends, and identify the cancellation route while the terms are still visible.
App Store auto-renewable subscriptions provide continuing access to an app’s content, services, or premium features. Apple describes them this way: “They automatically renew at the end of their duration until the user chooses to cancel.” The renewal continues until you cancel or the provider otherwise ends the subscription. How iPhone app subscriptions work
Renewal is automatic
When you subscribe through the App Store, you authorize recurring billing for the selected duration. At the end of that duration, the subscription renews at its standard price unless it has been canceled. The duration might be a month, a year, or another period offered by the app. Your access normally continues through each paid period while the subscription remains active.

Introductory offers are temporary
Apple supports several introductory structures:
- Free trial: access costs nothing for a stated period, then converts to the regular subscription if you do not cancel.
- Recurring introductory discount: a reduced price applies for a specified number of billing periods before the standard price starts.
- Prepaid introductory period: you pay an introductory amount in advance for a stated duration, after which the subscription can renew at the regular rate.
These are offer types, not universal prices. The app sets the amount, duration, and eligibility rules, and an offer may be limited to new or otherwise eligible subscribers. The displayed monthly equivalent may not be a monthly bill
A plan can advertise an amount expressed as a monthly equivalent while charging for a longer commitment. Apple gives the example of a monthly subscription option that can carry a 12-month commitment. Treat the billing period shown in the offer terms—not the arithmetic equivalent—as the amount of time you are agreeing to pay for.
Find the real cost before subscribing
Use the full renewal terms, not the promotional headline, to decide. Write down four facts before tapping the confirmation button: the standard renewal amount, the period that amount covers, the introductory offer and its end date, and the company that will process payment.

Standard renewal price
Look for wording such as “after trial,” “then,” or “renews at.” Capture the amount and currency exactly as displayed. If the app shows separate prices for monthly and annual plans, compare each plan’s regular renewal amount rather than comparing only the first payment.
Billing interval and commitment
Check whether the price is charged every month, every year, or once for a multi-month period. A plan described as an annual commitment with a monthly equivalent still requires you to honor the stated annual term. Do not infer the interval from a calculator result or from the word “monthly” in a marketing headline; open the detailed terms.

Offer length and eligibility
Record how many days, weeks, or billing periods the offer lasts and whether it is available to your Apple Account. Some offers apply only once or only to qualifying subscribers. If the offer screen does not state the following price or duration clearly, pause and find the app’s subscription details rather than guessing.
Value after the introductory period
List the features you would still use after the promotion ends. Separate essential functions from occasional extras. A trial can demonstrate that an app works, but the renewal decision should be based on repeated use over the entire paid interval: for example, whether you will use premium storage, specialized tools, lessons, content, or support often enough to justify every renewal.
A practical way to compare plans
For two or more plans, put the terms side by side. The following worksheet keeps promotional prices from dominating the decision.

Calculate the recurring commitment
For a plan billed once per year, use the annual renewal amount as the commitment you must be ready to pay at renewal. For a plan billed monthly, multiply the stated monthly renewal amount by the number of months you realistically expect to keep it; do not substitute a promotional rate for the regular amount. If a plan has a longer commitment but displays a monthly equivalent, compare the total charge and the commitment length, not just the equivalent figure.
Compare utility, not feature count
More features do not automatically mean better value. Mark each feature as essential, useful, or irrelevant to your routine. A less expensive plan that contains the functions you use every week may be a better choice than a broader plan whose extras remain untouched. Conversely, an annual plan can make sense when you know you will use the service consistently and the terms do not create an unwanted commitment.

Read the offer screen before tapping Subscribe
- Open the detailed subscription options. Expand the screen if the app shows several durations or a “See all plans” control. Find the text that states the renewal amount and interval.
- Identify the introductory offer. Determine whether it is free, discounted for a set number of periods, or prepaid for a stated duration.
- Find the transition point. Note the date or number of periods after which the standard price applies. If only a duration is shown, calculate the calendar date and save it.
- Check the commitment. Confirm whether the displayed price covers one month, one year, or a longer term. A monthly equivalent is not proof of monthly billing.
- Confirm eligibility and account. Make sure the offer applies to the Apple Account you intend to use and understand whether it is a one-time introductory benefit.
- Save evidence of the terms. Keep the receipt or a screenshot showing the price, interval, and offer end date. The receipt also helps identify the billing provider if you later cannot find the subscription in Settings.
Will a free trial automatically charge you?
Usually, an App Store free trial changes into a paid auto-renewing subscription when the trial ends unless you cancel it. The amount charged is the standard renewal price shown in the offer details, not the value of the free period. A discounted introductory period works the same way in principle: once the specified discounted periods finish, the next renewal uses the regular price.
If you do not want the trial to become paid, Apple advises canceling at least 24 hours before the trial ends. Do not wait for the final minutes, because the cancellation must be recorded before the renewal window. Apple gives the timing and cancellation instructions at support.apple.com/en-us/118428.
How do I cancel an app subscription on my iPhone?
For a subscription billed through your Apple Account, use this path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select the subscription you want to stop.
- Tap Cancel Subscription. You may need to scroll to see the button, then confirm the cancellation.
Apple’s support instructions are at support.apple.com/en-us/118428. If the subscription page shows no Cancel button or displays a red expiration message, Apple says the subscription is already canceled. Keep the screen or confirmation for your records.
Why can’t I find a subscription in iPhone Settings?
A missing entry usually means that the subscription is associated with a different Apple Account or is billed by a company other than Apple. Work through these checks in order.

Check the Apple Account on the receipt
Search your email for the Apple receipt and inspect which Apple Account was used. Sign in to that account on the iPhone, then return to Settings > your name > Subscriptions. Look at the payment statement
If there is no Apple receipt, inspect the bank or card statement for the name of the company taking payment. Contact that company and use its cancellation process. An app can appear on an iPhone while its subscription is managed on the developer’s website or through another payment system.
Check a carrier or other provider
Subscriptions obtained through a mobile carrier or another provider must be canceled with that provider. Apple cannot display or stop a recurring charge that it does not process. Keep the provider’s receipt and cancellation confirmation.

Price-change handling depends on the size of the increase, the region, and applicable law. Apple may send advance notices, and some increases require your consent before the next renewal. If consent is required and you do not provide it, Apple says the subscription will not renew at the higher price.

There is no single worldwide threshold that predicts whether consent will be requested. The Apple support page available for this subject is the Ireland edition, so its regional rules should not be treated as universal. Respond to a notice deliberately
- Compare the new renewal amount with the value you currently receive.
- Check whether the change affects the next renewal or a later date.
- Look for a consent deadline if one is stated.
- Cancel before renewal if the revised price no longer fits your budget or usage.
What to do after canceling
Cancellation stops the next automatic renewal; it does not erase the record of the transaction. Verify that the subscription page shows an expiration date or other canceled status and note when access ends under the terms displayed by Apple or the provider.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission recommends recording when a promotional period ends and reviewing bank or card statements after cancellation for unexpected charges. This is general U.S. consumer guidance, not a guarantee about every provider or jurisdiction. Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing from the trial price alone
A free or low introductory amount says nothing about whether the regular renewal is affordable. Write down the post-offer price before you subscribe.

Check the actual duration and commitment. A monthly equivalent can accompany a longer term.
Forgetting the offer end date
Save the date immediately and set a reminder early enough to cancel at least 24 hours before a trial ends if you do not intend to continue.
Canceling in the wrong place
If Apple does not appear on the receipt or statement, Settings may not contain the subscription. Identify the billing company first and cancel with that provider.
Ignoring a price-change notice
A subscription can remain active while its renewal price changes. Read notices and decide before the next charge rather than assuming the old amount will continue.

- I know whether the charge recurs monthly, annually, or on another schedule.
- I understand whether the plan carries a longer commitment.
- I know exactly what the introductory offer includes and when it ends.
- I expect to use the paid features throughout the renewal period.
- I know whether Apple, a carrier, or another company will bill me.
- I have saved the renewal date and know where the Cancel control is located.
If any answer is missing, do not confirm the subscription yet. Find the complete offer terms or the correct billing provider first. If all seven answers are clear and the ongoing value justifies the regular renewal cost, the plan is an informed purchase rather than a trial that quietly becomes a recurring charge.
