Choose the operating system before you choose the tablet. If you need Windows desktop software, conventional laptop-style typing, or a workflow built around full desktop file management, start with a Windows detachable such as Surface Pro and verify that your exact applications run on its processor. If browser and mobile apps cover your work, an Android tablet can be lighter and less expensive. For distraction-free reading and handwriting, an e-paper tablet is a separate category rather than a general-purpose iPad substitute.
Then price the complete setup: tablet, keyboard, pen, storage, case and cellular connectivity. A low base price can disappear once the accessories needed for lectures or office work are added, and availability, bundles and specifications vary by country and configuration.
1. Make the platform decision first
Choose Windows when a desktop application is non-negotiable
A Windows detachable is the safer starting point for software that expects a desktop operating system, traditional installers, plug-ins, advanced file management or a full laptop keyboard. Microsoft describes Surface Pro 12-inch as a thin, fanless Windows PC that switches between tablet and laptop modes. That flexibility is useful for office work, coding, specialist coursework and creative applications that do not have an equivalent mobile version.
Do not assume that the word “Windows” guarantees compatibility. Check the application maker’s requirements for the exact processor architecture, graphics features, drivers and plug-ins in the configuration you intend to buy. Test peripherals such as scanners, specialist cameras or laboratory hardware before committing. A detachable can run desktop software and still feel less comfortable than a conventional laptop for many hours of typing because the kickstand and keyboard are separate pieces.

Choose Android when mobile apps cover the workload
Android tablets suit browsing, streaming, email, video calls, note-taking, reading, casual photo work and light documents. They generally offer a broader selection of tablet-sized entertainment and study apps than e-paper devices, while remaining simpler and lighter than a Windows PC. The trade-off is that mobile apps may expose fewer advanced controls, handle files differently and offer less capable multitasking than their desktop counterparts.
Confirm that the services you use support the tablet’s Android version and regional app store. Check whether your school or employer requires a desktop-only security client, virtual private network, browser extension or document plug-in. If so, an Android tablet may be a companion device rather than your only computer.
Choose e-paper only for a focused reading and writing workflow
E-paper tablets are designed for long reading sessions, handwriting, sketching and distraction-free notes. Tom’s Guide describes ReMarkable Paper Pro as this kind of focused tool and notes that e-paper refreshes more slowly than a conventional LCD or OLED panel. That makes page turns, scrolling, video and fast animation less fluid. Treat e-paper as a specialist reader and notebook, not as an all-purpose entertainment tablet.

Use the row that describes your most demanding task, not the one that describes your occasional tasks. A student who mainly streams but occasionally edits a complex desktop project should choose for the project or keep a separate computer. Someone who takes handwritten notes all day should prioritize pen behavior over a small difference in processor speed.
3. Compare the hardware characteristics that change daily use
Screen size and display type
A larger panel makes split-screen documents, timelines and lecture slides easier to read but increases weight and reduces one-handed portability. A smaller tablet is easier to carry and hold while reading. Conventional LCD or OLED screens are the practical choice for video, games and fast scrolling. E-paper is easier to use as a focused notebook in some lighting conditions but updates more slowly and is not suited to mainstream entertainment.
Samsung’s April 2, 2025 announcement lists a 13.1-inch display for the Galaxy Tab S10 FE+, refresh rates up to 90Hz and up to 800 nits high-brightness mode. Samsung also says the FE series is IP68-rated, more than 4% lighter than its predecessor and that the FE+ display is almost 12% larger than the previous FE+; those are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements. Compare the exact FE or FE+ size with the bag, stand and keyboard you will carry.
Handwritten input and drawing
For lecture notes, the pen is often more important than the tablet’s headline processor. Look for low perceived latency, reliable palm rejection, a comfortable tip, pressure sensitivity if you draw, and an app that can search or export your notes. Confirm whether the pen is in the box, included only with a particular regional SKU, or sold separately. A tablet that requires a separate pen may cost substantially more than its advertised starting price.

Keyboard and laptop ergonomics
A detachable keyboard is valuable for essays, spreadsheets and long email sessions, but it is not automatically equal to a laptop keyboard. Check key travel, trackpad size, backlighting, hinge stability and whether the keyboard works comfortably on your lap. Windows detachables usually offer a kickstand; that improves desk flexibility but can require more table depth than a clamshell laptop.
Microsoft’s Surface Pro 12-inch announcement describes an attachable keyboard and a Slim Pen that stores magnetically. The announcement and current comparisons do not establish that every regional package includes both accessories, so verify the box contents and price for the exact configuration.
Storage, ports and connectivity
Choose storage for local video, photo libraries, downloaded course material and offline files, not just the operating system. Check whether the model supports removable storage, which ports are available, and whether a hub is needed for displays, cameras or wired networking. Wi-Fi is adequate for home, campus and office networks; cellular connectivity adds flexibility but also a recurring service cost and may be unavailable on some regional configurations.
Battery and support claims
Battery figures from manufacturers are estimates under specified conditions, not guarantees for video calls, gaming or high brightness. Lenovo lists up to 10 hours for Tab P12 and cautions that actual results vary with configuration, software, use and operating conditions. No like-for-like independent battery test or universal support-period comparison was established for all of these alternatives, so check current model-specific support policies before purchase.

4. Product examples and what to verify
Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE and FE+
Samsung positions the Galaxy Tab S10 FE series for studying, entertainment and day-to-day tasks. The FE+ is the larger option, with the 13.1-inch display and up-to-90Hz refresh rate described above. Samsung presents the series as IP68-rated, which can be useful around classrooms, kitchens or travel, but water-resistance conditions and warranty exclusions still apply.
A current editorial comparison says the FE+ includes an S Pen. Treat that as a configuration detail to confirm for your country and storage tier. A keyboard may be optional, and the cost of turning the tablet into an essay-writing setup should be included in your budget. Check Samsung’s current regional comparison page for screen, storage, connectivity and bundle differences rather than assuming every FE model is identical.
The FE line is a strong fit when Android note-taking, streaming and general apps are your priority. It is not a drop-in replacement for every Windows desktop program, and the quality of a particular note or drawing app matters more than the tablet’s marketing category.

Microsoft Surface Pro 12-inch
Microsoft’s September 23, 2026 announcement describes Surface Pro 12-inch as a thin, light, fanless Windows PC that moves between tablet and laptop modes. It gives a US starting MSRP of $1,149.99 and says availability begins October 13 in select markets. That is an announced US price, not a universal retail price, and the launch timing does not prove that the model is sold in every country.

Use it as the first candidate when you need Windows desktop software, a full desktop browser or conventional file workflows in a tablet form factor. Price the keyboard, Slim Pen, charger, case and any storage upgrade separately unless your chosen package clearly includes them. Confirm the processor, memory, storage, ports, cellular option and local repair or warranty terms before ordering.
Microsoft Surface Pro 11
Creative Bloq describes Surface Pro 11 as a Windows 11 detachable with LCD or OLED display options, a detachable keyboard and support for desktop creative software. Configurations and stock change, so verify the live specification for your market. It is a reasonable option for users who need Windows but prefer a detachable screen, provided the complete kit fits the budget and the required applications run on the selected processor.
Lenovo Tab P12
Lenovo frames Tab P12 for work and play and lists an optional keyboard pack. Its product page claims up to 10 hours of battery life while warning that results vary with configuration, software, use and operating conditions. Check whether the local listing includes the keyboard, which pen is supported, the storage tier and current Android software support. Availability and bundles can differ from the US page on which the specification was presented.
E-paper tablets
Choose an e-paper model when reading and handwriting are the main activities and you can accept slower refresh, limited color or video capability, and a narrower app selection. Its advantages are focus and a paper-like writing experience; its disadvantages become obvious when scrolling websites, watching movies, gaming or switching rapidly between apps.

The Surface Pro 12-inch’s announced $1,149.99 US MSRP is a starting figure, while Samsung and Lenovo bundles vary by region and promotion. Do not compare that number directly with an Android tablet that already includes a pen and then call the cheaper base model the better value. Compare configured totals in the same currency and on the same date.

6. Follow this selection process
- Write down your three most frequent tasks. For example: “loads of note-taking in lectures,” light photo editing and movies or streaming. That wording mirrors a public student discussion but is an individual example, not a representative survey.
- Mark each task as desktop, mobile or e-paper friendly. A desktop-only requirement moves you toward Windows. A handwriting-heavy but mobile-app workflow points toward Android. A reading-and-journaling workflow may justify e-paper.
- Test the exact applications. Install trial versions where possible, open your real documents, check cloud and local file handling, and verify plug-ins, fonts, export formats and peripheral support. Do this before buying accessories.
- Choose the smallest screen that remains comfortable. Compare split-screen documents, lecture slides, drawing space and the weight you can carry daily. Larger is not automatically better if the device stays at home.
- Specify the input kit. Decide whether you need a keyboard every day, a pen every day or both. Confirm inclusion and compatibility for the exact model number and region.
- Configure storage and connectivity. Estimate local video, photos, course folders and offline maps. Select Wi-Fi or cellular based on where you work, not on a specification-sheet maximum.
- Calculate the delivered total. Add accessories, tax, shipping, protection and any recurring cellular cost. Compare like-for-like packages rather than base prices.
- Check support and returns. Look for current operating-system support information, repair options, warranty terms and a return window long enough to test your real applications and typing setup.
7. Make note-taking and study practical
Before a semester starts, create a short test notebook with a page of handwriting, a diagram, a scanned worksheet and a long typed answer. Test palm rejection while resting your hand on the screen, export the notebook to PDF, search handwriting if the app supports it, and open the exported file on a different computer. This catches app-specific limitations that a specification table cannot show.
For lectures, compare the tablet’s weight with the keyboard and case attached. A 13.1-inch FE+ can provide generous slide and note space, but a smaller tablet may be easier to hold through a long class. If you annotate PDFs, confirm that the app preserves your marks when files are shared with classmates or submitted to an institution.
If you need light photo editing, check the mobile app’s layer, raw-file, color-management and export features against your actual assignments. If any required control exists only in the desktop version, keep a Windows computer available or choose a Windows detachable from the start.
8. Evaluate entertainment separately from productivity
For movies and streaming, prioritize a bright conventional display, good speakers, comfortable aspect ratio, stable Wi-Fi and support for the services available in your country. Check current service and digital-rights-management support for the exact operating-system version; an app being listed in one country does not guarantee playback everywhere.
For games, consider sustained performance, refresh rate, touch response, storage for large downloads and controller support. A 90Hz panel such as the one Samsung cites for the FE+ can make supported scrolling and games appear smoother, but refresh rate alone does not establish frame rate or game performance.
E-paper is the wrong choice if entertainment means frequent video, animation or rapid page changes. Its slower refresh is a deliberate trade-off for reading comfort and focus, not a defect that a software update will remove.

Buying the cheapest base model
A base tablet without a keyboard, pen or adequate storage may cost less initially but fail the task that motivated the purchase. Configure the complete kit before comparing prices.

Assuming every model in a family is equivalent
FE and FE+ differ in screen size, and storage, cellular radios, memory and bundles can vary by market. Read the exact model number and box contents.
Assuming a detachable is a perfect laptop
Try the keyboard on a desk and, if possible, on your lap. Check the trackpad, kickstand angle and stability before replacing a conventional laptop for long work sessions.
Ignoring regional availability
Microsoft’s Surface Pro 12-inch announcement specifies a US MSRP and availability in select markets from October 13, 2026. Samsung and Lenovo also publish market-specific configurations. Confirm that the device, keyboard layout, pen and warranty are sold where you live.

Turning marketing claims into test results
Samsung’s brightness, weight and display-size improvements and Lenovo’s “up to 10 hours” battery figure are manufacturer claims with stated conditions. Use them as specifications, not as cross-brand laboratory results.
Forgetting your file exit plan
Before committing to a mobile or e-paper app, export a real notebook and a real edited document. Confirm that you can open, back up and continue the work on another platform if the tablet is lost, replaced or unsupported.
10. A concise decision checklist
- Do I require a Windows desktop application or will a mobile app do?
- Will I type for hours, write by hand, draw, or mostly consume media?
- Which screen size can I carry comfortably every day?
- Are the keyboard, pen, charger and case included for this exact regional SKU?
- Is storage sufficient for offline files, photos and downloaded video?
- Do the services, accessories and peripherals I use work on this operating system?
- What is the configured total after accessories, tax and any cellular plan?
- Can I return the device after testing my real applications and exported files?
Final decision
There is no single universal iPad replacement. Start with Windows when desktop software and laptop-style work are essential; choose an Android tablet when mobile apps, handwriting and entertainment dominate; choose e-paper only when focused reading and writing outweigh video, color and app breadth. The best choice is the one whose complete, region-specific configuration performs your hardest recurring task without forcing you to buy a second device immediately.
