Yes, a Nikon D850 can record infrared light, but the stock camera is not an infrared-converted body and has no dedicated infrared mode established in Nikon’s reviewed D850 documentation. Its internal filter blocks infrared wavelengths, so adding an external IR-pass filter can be an experiment, not a substitute for conversion. For regular infrared photography, a specialist conversion is the more practical path.
What infrared means for the D850
Nikon places visible light at approximately 380–750 nanometers (nm) and infrared just above 750 nm. The sensor can respond to light beyond the visible range, but the stock camera’s internal physical filter blocks infrared from reaching it. Nikon puts the practical issue this way: “All standard digital cameras have an internal, physical filter that blocks IR wavelengths from reaching the sensor.”
That filter is why a standard D850 does not behave like a dedicated IR camera. Nikon’s infrared primer quotes a photographer named Chris describing the challenge as “working around the internal IR blocking filter incorporated into DSLR and mirrorless camera bodies.”

Yes. An external IR-pass filter, such as the Hoya R72 720 nm filter Nikon describes as a popular starting point, fits in front of the lens and blocks much of the visible light. It does not remove or replace the D850’s internal IR-blocking filter. The limited infrared that gets through both filters can mean very long exposures.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Nikon gives 30–90 seconds as an example exposure range for infrared photography with an unconverted system on a bright, sunny day. That is Nikon’s illustration, not a guaranteed D850 setting: actual exposure depends on the conditions and equipment. The D850 supports long time exposures in manual mode, but its standard ISO range—ISO 64–25,600, with expanded settings also available—does not establish how much infrared reaches the sensor through a particular filter.
This setup can help you explore IR photography without altering the camera, but long exposures make moving subjects difficult and require a stable camera. It is a less practical choice for routine IR shooting.

Should you keep the camera stock or convert it?
| Path | What changes | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Stock D850 plus external IR-pass filter | The internal IR-blocking filter remains; exposures may be very long. | Low-commitment experiments and static subjects. |
| Internally converted D850 | The internal blocking filter is removed and replaced with a filter selected for a desired wavelength response. Focus behavior changes; an IR-only conversion may make ordinary visible-light photography unsuitable. | More practical, regular infrared photography. |
Conversion is not just an add-on filter: it changes the camera internally. Before choosing a service, ask what filter will be installed, how focus will be calibrated, and whether the conversion can be reversed. The reviewed Nikon material does not establish current D850 compatibility, service availability, or pricing for a particular conversion provider.

How conversion wavelength affects the image
The installed filter’s cutoff influences how much infrared and visible light reaches the sensor, and therefore the kind of image the conversion can produce. Nikon describes these broad tendencies:

- If you want to try IR without modifying the D850, consider an external filter such as the Hoya R72 720 nm and expect exposure times to be long. Check that the filter fits your lens.
- If you plan to shoot infrared regularly, investigate an internal conversion and confirm the filter type, focus calibration, and reversibility with the service provider.
- If you need one body for both visible-light and infrared photography, ask how the proposed conversion handles visible light; an IR-only setup can restrict ordinary photography.
Nikon’s D850 manual documents long time exposures in manual mode, while its specifications list the camera’s ISO range. Those specifications are useful operating context, not proof of a dedicated IR feature or a particular exposure outcome. Nikon’s D850 firmware C 1.31 release, dated 2024-04-25, does not establish an IR-specific firmware function.
