Choose an ID lanyard and holder by matching the attachment and holder to your credential, then weighing comfort, scanning frequency, and whether the setting calls for a breakaway connector. There is no universally best option: product listings describe choices, but the sources available do not establish a tested winner or prove that a badge lanyard improves access security.
What an everyday ID lanyard does—and does not do
A lanyard keeps a visible ID or access credential close at hand for employees, visitors, students, contractors, and event attendees. Idesco’s lanyard catalog documents these uses and a range of product options.
A lanyard carries a credential; it does not authenticate the wearer, control entry, or prevent unauthorized access by itself. Those outcomes depend on the credential and the organization’s access procedures. Choose the lanyard for carrying and handling the badge, not as a security control.
Which features should you compare?

When is a breakaway lanyard the right choice?
A breakaway design has a connector intended to separate when pulled. NameBadge.com’s explainer describes this basic feature; it is not independent safety validation, and the feature should not be treated as a guarantee that injury will be prevented.
Consider the wearer’s environment and the possibility of a cord catching on equipment, fixtures, or other objects. Where that concern is relevant, look for a clearly specified breakaway connector and follow the organization’s workplace or school requirements. A continuous lanyard is a separate option where a release feature is not needed and the setting permits it.

How to match the holder and attachment to your badge
- Check the credential. Confirm its dimensions and whether it needs a holder. Identify whether the card is used vertically or horizontally.
- Check the attachment point. If the card or holder has a hole or slot, verify that the lanyard’s clip or loop fits through it. A reader’s informal question about a “breakaway lanyard that I can fit through the holes” captures this practical compatibility issue.
- Consider the workflow. If the badge is scanned often or must be removed, choose an arrangement that makes presentation and removal manageable.
- Check the listing details. Confirm whether the holder is included, the supported card dimensions and orientation, the attachment type, adjustability, and whether a breakaway connector is specified.
C-Line’s 2023 catalog shows ID accessories, but a catalog entry from that year does not establish current stock or availability. Verify current product details with the seller before ordering.

The word “lanyard” also refers to equipment used in occupational fall-protection systems. OSHA’s Technical Manual defines that component as “A lanyard is a flexible rope, wire rope, or strap” in its fall-protection context: OSHA Technical Manual, Section 5, Chapter 4. That definition concerns equipment connected to a harness or belt, not an ordinary badge accessory. OSHA’s regulation likewise addresses personal fall protection systems rather than ID lanyards: 29 CFR 1910.140.
