Choose the cable category after checking both devices. A cable cannot add 4K, 8K, HDR, or a higher refresh rate that the console or PC and the display do not support. For a setup that needs up to 48Gbps—such as compatible 4K at 120Hz or 8K at 60Hz—buy a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable and verify its exact model and length. For a compatible 4K-at-60Hz HDR setup that does not need that bandwidth, a certified Premium High Speed HDMI Cable rated up to 18Gbps is the appropriate lower-bandwidth choice. HDMI 2.2 devices and modes that need up to 96Gbps belong to the newer Ultra96 HDMI Cable category.
Start with the mode you actually want
Write down the combination of resolution, refresh rate, color and HDR settings you intend to use. “4K gaming” can mean 4K at 60Hz or 4K at 120Hz; those are different bandwidth targets. Likewise, an 8K display may be used at 60Hz even though the source cannot output 8K, and a high-refresh monitor may run at a lower resolution.
Then check both ends of the connection:
- Source: the game console, graphics card, laptop or other device must be able to output the target mode.
- Display: the television, monitor or receiver must accept that mode on the specific HDMI input you plan to use. Some products expose their highest specification on only one or two inputs.
- Intermediate equipment: an AV receiver, soundbar, switch or capture device in the signal path must also pass the chosen resolution, refresh rate and HDR format.
The cable is only the link between those capabilities. HDMI Licensing Administrator identifies 4K120 and 8K60 among the high-resolution, high-refresh modes associated with HDMI 2.1b; that does not mean every HDMI 2.1b device supports every mode. Confirm the specifications and input labels for your exact hardware in the manufacturer’s manuals.
Use the official specification information at HDMI 2.1b Specification as a reference for the feature set, but select the cable by its certified cable category rather than by a version number printed in a listing.

Match the cable category to bandwidth
These are the cable categories relevant to current gaming installations. The figures are maximum category bandwidths, not a promise that your devices will operate at that rate.
| Cable category | Bandwidth category | Typical target supported by the category | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium High Speed HDMI Cable | Up to 18Gbps | Compatible 4K at 60Hz with HDR | Use when both devices need no more than the 18Gbps class. |
| Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable | Up to 48Gbps | Compatible 4K at 120Hz and 8K at 60Hz configurations | Use for high-refresh 4K, 8K60, or another HDMI 2.1b mode requiring up to 48Gbps. |
| Ultra96 HDMI Cable | Up to 96Gbps | HDMI 2.2 configurations such as 4K at 240Hz with full chroma at 10- or 12-bit color | Use only when the source, display and signal path are HDMI 2.2 compatible and the selected mode needs the additional bandwidth. |
HDMI Licensing Administrator’s cable guidance describes the 18Gbps Premium High Speed category at its official certification-program explanation. The 48Gbps Ultra High Speed category and newer Ultra96 category are described in the administrator’s HDMI cable guidance.
Why “8K cable” is not enough information
A seller’s phrase such as “8K cable” does not identify a certification category, the tested length or the registered model. It also cannot tell you whether your source and display can produce 8K60, whether an AV receiver passes it, or whether a particular long installation will maintain the signal. Treat the official category name and certification label as the useful information; treat a resolution printed on packaging as a marketing description until verified.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not choose by “HDMI 2.1 cable” alone
HDMI specifications describe device features and interfaces, while cable programs identify what a cable model and length have passed in testing. “HDMI 2.1 cable” is therefore too vague for a purchase decision. Look for Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable when you need the 48Gbps class, or Ultra96 HDMI Cable for an HDMI 2.2 installation that genuinely needs 96Gbps.

How to verify certification before buying
Certification is model- and length-specific. HDMI Licensing Administrator says every length of every model line must pass testing for the Ultra High Speed category; a five-metre version is not automatically covered because a two-metre version passed.
- Find the official category name. The package or product information should say “Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable” or “Premium High Speed HDMI Cable,” not only “8K,” “gaming,” or “HDMI 2.1.”
- Look for the official label. The Ultra High Speed label is designed to identify the certified cable category.
- Scan the QR code. Use the QR code on the label to check the registered brand, model and cable length in the certification information.
- Match the listing to the label. Confirm that the model and length you are ordering are the same ones shown in the registration. A different length or revision can be a different certification entry.
- Keep the packaging and receipt. They make it easier to verify the purchased length and return a cable if the label or registration does not match.
The certification program and label details are explained at the Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable Certification Program page.
Choose the right category for common gaming setups
4K at 60Hz with HDR
If the console or PC and display both support 4K60 HDR and no higher-bandwidth feature is required, a certified Premium High Speed HDMI Cable rated up to 18Gbps is the lower-bandwidth category designed for this class of setup. Check that the display’s HDR and 4K options are available on the selected input, and enable them in the source and display menus after connecting.

4K at 120Hz
For compatible 4K120 gaming, select a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable. The category supports configurations up to 48Gbps and is the relevant choice for HDMI 2.1b high-refresh modes. Both devices must support 4K120, and any receiver, switch or capture device between them must pass it. If the source offers 4K120 only after a setting is enabled, turn that setting on after the cable is installed and recognized.

8K at 60Hz
For a source and display that genuinely support 8K60, use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable and verify that every device in the chain accepts 8K60. An “8K” label on a cable cannot upgrade an 8K30 source to 8K60 or make a television accept a mode its input does not support.
Very high refresh rates and HDMI 2.2
HDMI 2.2 introduces the Ultra96 HDMI Cable category for configurations up to 96Gbps. HDMI Licensing Administrator gives 4K240 with full chroma at 10- or 12-bit color as an example of a mode that can need the additional bandwidth. This category is not necessary for every 4K or 8K installation: buy it when the source, display and signal path are HDMI 2.2 compatible and the exact mode requires more than the 48Gbps class.
PC gaming with changing resolutions
PC users should plan for the highest mode they will actually select, not only the mode used on the desktop. A monitor may run 4K60 for ordinary work and 4K120 or a different high-refresh mode for games. If you expect to change modes later, an appropriately certified Ultra High Speed cable gives more headroom than a Premium High Speed cable, provided the monitor and graphics output support those modes.

There is no single maximum length that applies to every HDMI cable. HDMI Licensing Administrator says usable distance depends on factors including cable type and construction. The correct approach is to assess the exact certified cable, its length and the installation rather than rely on a universal distance claim.
For short, direct connections
Use the shortest cable that comfortably reaches the devices. A short run is easier to route, replace and troubleshoot, but do not downgrade the category if the target mode requires 48Gbps or 96Gbps.
For long or difficult routes
Measure first, then select a cable construction explicitly rated for the required category at that length. Check the certification entry for the exact length where the program provides one. Avoid hiding a marginal connection behind a wall before you have verified that the source and display hold the desired mode reliably.

A buying workflow that avoids expensive mistakes
- Record the target mode. Note resolution, refresh rate, HDR requirement and any color setting you specifically need for games.
- Read the source specifications. Confirm that the console, graphics card or computer can output that mode from the intended port.
- Read the display specifications. Confirm that the television or monitor accepts the mode on the exact HDMI input you will use.
- Audit the signal path. Include receivers, soundbars, switches, capture hardware and wall plates. Every link must pass the target mode.
- Select the category. Choose Premium High Speed for an appropriate 4K60/HDR setup up to 18Gbps; choose Ultra High Speed for up to 48Gbps, including compatible 4K120 or 8K60; choose Ultra96 only for an HDMI 2.2 mode that needs up to 96Gbps.
- Measure the route. Add practical slack and account for the physical path, not just the distance between the boxes.
- Verify the exact cable. Check the official label, scan the QR code and match the registered model and length.
- Test before final installation. Set the source to the intended resolution, refresh rate and HDR mode, run a game or test pattern, and confirm that the display remains locked to the signal.
Set up and test the connection
Direct connection
- Turn off or put the source and display in standby before changing cables.
- Connect the selected cable directly from the source output to the display input identified in the display manual.
- Turn on the display and select that HDMI input.
- In the source settings, select the desired resolution and refresh rate. Enable HDR only after the basic signal is stable.
- Confirm the display’s information panel reports the intended mode. A 4K signal at 60Hz is not the same result as 4K at 120Hz.
Connection through a receiver or switch
- Check the intermediary’s input and output specifications for the exact target mode.
- Connect the source to an input documented for that mode, then connect the output to the display input documented for it.
- Test the source-to-display path before adding optional devices such as a capture unit.
- If the higher mode disappears, temporarily bypass the intermediary. If the direct connection works, the intermediary or one of its cables is the limiting component.
Troubleshoot a missing refresh rate or intermittent picture
The display offers only 60Hz
- Confirm that the source output and display input—not just the product family—support the higher refresh rate.
- Check the source’s resolution and refresh-rate menu; the display may expose 120Hz only at a particular resolution or after a setting is enabled.
- Bypass receivers, switches and adapters to isolate the signal path.
- Replace a vague “8K” or “HDMI 2.1” cable with a verified cable in the category required by the target mode.
The picture flickers, blanks or shows sparkles
- Reseat both connectors and remove strain from the plugs.
- Temporarily shorten the route or use a cable whose exact length is certified for the required category.
- Reduce the mode to a known-stable setting. If 4K60 works but the target high-refresh mode does not, the problem is likely a capability or signal-integrity limit somewhere in the path rather than proof that the display supports the higher mode.
- Test each component directly so that a switch, receiver or wall connection is not masking the fault.
HDR or the expected color option is unavailable
- Verify that HDR is enabled on both the source and display.
- Check whether the chosen resolution and refresh rate combination is supported with HDR on that input.
- Confirm that every intermediary device passes the complete mode, not merely the resolution.
- Use the cable category required for the combined mode; a cable that handles one lower-bandwidth setting does not prove it will handle another setting with a higher data requirement.
Common buying mistakes
Paying for a label instead of a capability
“Gaming,” “8K,” and “2.1” are not substitutes for a certified category, an exact model and an exact length. Certification information is more useful because it identifies what was tested.
Assuming a cable upgrades hardware
A cable transports the signal available from the source and accepted by the display. It cannot add a 120Hz output to a 60Hz console, create an 8K mode on a 4K panel or bypass a receiver that cannot pass the signal.
Buying the longest cable first
Extra length complicates routing and can make a marginal installation harder to diagnose. Measure the route, select the required category for that length and test it before concealing the run.
