To choose an Ethernet cable, buy a reputable solid-copper Cat6 UTP cable for most short home and office connections, using stranded cable for movable patch cords and solid cable for permanent wiring. Choose Cat6A for new 10Gbps or full-distance structured cabling, and choose Cat8 only for a specific short, high-speed copper link.

The right cable depends on four things: the fastest Ethernet port involved, the complete cable-channel length, the installation environment, and the cable’s construction. Category alone does not make a router, switch, computer, or internet connection faster.

Key takeaways

  • Cat6 UTP made from 100% bare copper is the best general-purpose choice for most home, gaming, streaming, NAS, and office patch cables.
  • Cat5e supports 1Gbps Ethernet over a standard channel and can support 2.5GBASE-T when the equipment and channel meet the relevant requirements.
  • Cat6 supports 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps applications and can carry 10Gbps over shorter channels, while Cat6A is the practical choice for 10Gbps across a complete 100-meter channel.
  • The commonly cited maximum for a standard twisted-pair copper Ethernet channel is 100 meters, or 328 feet, including permanent cable, patch cords, connectors, and patch panels.
  • Pure copper is preferable to copper-clad aluminum (CCA), especially for long runs, permanent wiring, and Power over Ethernet.
  • Cat8 is a specialized short-link option for compatible 25Gbps or 40Gbps copper equipment, not a general-purpose upgrade for ordinary home internet or gaming.

How to choose an Ethernet cable

Start with the fastest Ethernet port in the connection, then check the complete channel length, whether the cable will move or remain installed, whether it will carry PoE power, and whether the route has unusual electrical or outdoor hazards. For an ordinary device-to-router or device-to-switch connection, those checks usually lead to a pure-copper Cat6 UTP patch cable.

  1. Identify the fastest link speed. Check the router or switch port, the computer or device port, and the network adapter. A cable cannot increase a 1Gbps port to 2.5Gbps.
  2. Measure the complete route. Include slack, wall outlets, patch panels, and patch cords. A 100-meter channel is not necessarily one 100-meter cable.
  3. Choose the right category. Cat5e is sufficient for many 1Gbps and 2.5Gbps links; Cat6 is the practical default; Cat6A is for new full-distance 10Gbps wiring.
  4. Check the conductor. Prefer cable clearly specified as 100% bare copper. Treat CCA as a compromise rather than the default.
  5. Match the construction to the job. Use flexible stranded cable for patching devices and solid structured cable for permanent runs.
  6. Check the environment. Ordinary rooms normally need UTP. High-EMI, outdoor, between-building, plenum, and PoE installations need additional design attention.

What does “Cat” mean on an Ethernet cable?

“Cat” means cable category. Category describes transmission-performance requirements such as bandwidth, insertion loss, and resistance to crosstalk. Category is related to Ethernet speed, but category and link speed are not interchangeable.

  • Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5

For example, Cat6 cable connected to 1Gbps Ethernet ports still produces a 1Gbps link. A Cat8 cable connected to a 1Gbps router and 1Gbps computer does not create a faster connection. The negotiated link is constrained by the slowest compatible component, including the two ports, cable, connectors, patch panels, and installation.

Cable frequency ratings are also easy to misunderstand. A rating such as 100MHz, 250MHz, or 500MHz describes an electrical transmission characteristic; it is not the internet speed. A 500MHz Cat6A cable does not automatically provide a 10Gbps internet connection, and a 2,000MHz Cat8 cable does not upgrade network hardware.

What is the difference between Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, and Cat8?

The categories differ in transmission performance and intended Ethernet applications. The following table summarizes common uses, but actual performance depends on the Ethernet PHY, channel length, connectors, patch cords, bundling, temperature, and installation quality.

Category Typical frequency rating Common Ethernet use 10Gbps suitability Approximate channel guidance
Cat5e 100MHz 1Gbps; 2.5Gbps with 2.5GBASE-T requirements Not the normal choice Up to 100m for supported lower-speed Ethernet
Cat6 250MHz 1Gbps, 2.5Gbps, and 5Gbps Yes, over shorter channels in suitable conditions Up to 100m for lower-speed operation; shorter for 10Gbps
Cat6A 500MHz 10Gbps Yes, intended for the full standard channel Up to 100m for a compliant channel
Cat8 2,000MHz Specialized 25Gbps and 40Gbps copper links Yes, but it is not a general-purpose upgrade Approximately 30m for the intended short-link applications

Fluke Networks’ category and distance table lists the frequency ratings and high-speed distance guidance. IEEE 802.3bz cabling guidance identifies Category 5e for 2.5GBASE-T, Category 6 for 5GBASE-T, and Category 6A for 10GBASE-T in the cited material.

Cat5e: when is it enough?

Cat5e is enough for an existing 100Mbps or 1Gbps home or office network, provided the channel is properly installed. IEEE 802.3bz also defines 2.5GBASE-T over Category 5e cabling when compliant equipment and channel conditions are present.

Cat5e is often the least expensive option for a basic replacement patch cord. Cat6 is usually a better default when the price difference is small and the cable will be used for a new purchase.

Cat6: why is it the default recommendation?

Cat6 offers inexpensive headroom for most consumer networks. Cat6 works for 1Gbps, 2.5Gbps, and 5Gbps applications under the appropriate Ethernet standards, and Cat6 can support 10Gbps over a shorter channel when installation conditions are suitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a short cable between a router and gaming PC, console, television, printer, access point, or NAS, Cat6 UTP is normally the best balance of cost, availability, flexibility, and future capacity.

Cat6A: when should you buy it?

Buy Cat6A for a new permanent installation intended to support 10Gbps throughout a standard 100-meter channel. Cat6A provides more 10Gbps distance margin than Cat6, but the cable is typically thicker, less flexible, and more difficult to route.

Cat6A is often unnecessary for a short patch cable connected to 1Gbps equipment. Cat6A also cannot make a 1Gbps internet plan or network adapter operate at 10Gbps.

Does Cat8 make a home network faster?

Cat8 does not make ordinary home networking hardware faster. Cat8 has a legitimate role in short, specialized copper links for compatible 25Gbps or 40Gbps equipment, with a commonly specified channel length of approximately 30 meters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cat8 is often stiff, expensive, and shielded. A Cat8 “gaming” cable connected to a 1Gbps console or router is an expensive 1Gbps cable. Cat7 and Cat8 labels in consumer listings should not be treated as proof of superior real-world performance without clear conductor, connector, category, and standards information.

Cat7 is an ISO/IEC cabling category, not an IEEE Ethernet speed designation. Consumer listings frequently use Cat7 as a higher-number marketing label, and many such products terminate in ordinary RJ45-compatible plugs without providing a useful advantage over a properly specified Cat6A installation. The NSRC cabling standards presentation discusses the terminology and category distinctions.

How fast is your network?

Check the complete local Ethernet path rather than choosing a cable based only on your internet subscription. Internet speed, negotiated link speed, and actual throughput are different measurements.

What to check What it tells you Where to look
Internet-plan speed The WAN service rate supplied by the ISP ISP account, bill, or service plan
Router or gateway port The maximum rate of the network port Port label, product specifications, or administration page
Switch port The rate available to connected devices Port label, switch specifications, or management interface
Device Ethernet port The maximum rate of the computer, console, TV, NAS, or access point Device specifications or motherboard/network-adapter details
Negotiated link speed The rate currently agreed between two local Ethernet ports Operating-system network status or switch management page
Real throughput The measured transfer rate after protocol overhead and device limits File transfer or network performance test

Real throughput is normally lower than the negotiated link rate because of protocol overhead, storage performance, CPU limits, and other network conditions. A cable category by itself does not determine a download test result.

How long can an Ethernet cable be?

The commonly cited maximum for a standard twisted-pair Ethernet channel is 100 meters, or 328 feet. That limit applies to the complete channel, not necessarily a single retail cable. The channel can include permanent horizontal cable, wall outlets, keystone jacks, patch panels, and patch cords.

Cisco’s Ethernet cabling guidance describes the 100-meter segment limit, while Fluke Networks’ 1000BASE-T guidance covers operation over four-pair Category 5 balanced cabling systems.

Do not assume that a 200-foot or 300-foot consumer cable will support every Ethernet speed at the maximum rate. Cat6’s 10Gbps reach is shorter than Cat6A’s full-distance 10Gbps reach, and poor terminations or excessive bundling can reduce the usable margin.

For a run beyond the copper channel limit, use an intermediate switch or a properly designed fiber extension instead of joining random consumer cables. Fiber is particularly attractive for long outdoor or inter-building routes.

Should you choose UTP or shielded Ethernet cable?

Choose UTP for an ordinary home or office unless the installation has a documented electromagnetic-interference problem or a specific structured-cabling design calls for shielding.

F/UTP Overall foil shield; pairs individually unshielded Some higher-EMI installations
U/FTP Individual foil shields; no overall shield Targeted pair-level interference control
S/FTP Overall braid plus foil around individual pairs Higher-EMI or specialized installations

Shielding can help near industrial equipment, large motors, dense electrical infrastructure, or some data-center environments. Shielding does not automatically improve speed. Shielding must continue through compatible shielded plugs, jacks, patch panels, and grounding or bonding arrangements. An isolated shielded cable can cost more without delivering the intended benefit.

Shielding and grounding guidance from Monoprice explains why cable, connectors, and grounding must be considered as one channel. Eaton’s Ethernet cable guidance also compares category and installation considerations.

Should you buy solid or stranded Ethernet cable?

Use stranded cable for flexible patch cords and solid cable for permanent structured-cabling runs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Construction Best use Important limitation
Stranded conductor Router-to-device, wall-outlet-to-device, switch-to-patch-panel patch cords More flexible, but generally less suitable for permanent in-wall runs
Solid conductor Bulk cable pulled through walls and terminated at keystone jacks or patch panels Less flexible and not intended to be repeatedly moved or sharply bent

Do not use stiff solid bulk cable as a substitute for a flexible desk lead. Do not treat stranded patch cable as the ideal replacement for permanent structured cable inside a building.

Why does pure copper matter?

CCA means copper-clad aluminum. CCA is not the same conductor construction as solid bare copper, and CCA generally has higher resistance. Higher resistance is especially undesirable on long runs and in Power over Ethernet installations, where the cable carries both data and electrical power.

Prefer cable explicitly identified as 100% bare copper, particularly for in-wall wiring, long channels, and PoE cameras or access points. Attractive packaging, “gaming” language, a high Cat number, or a large MHz claim does not prove conductor quality.

CCA cable will not necessarily fail immediately in every short, low-power application. The practical buying decision is that CCA is a riskier construction for standards compliance, durability, long-distance performance, and PoE reliability. Monoprice’s networking-cable information distinguishes its pure-copper products from CCA products.

What cable should you use for PoE?

Use compliant solid-copper Cat5e or better for Power over Ethernet, matched to the PoE system, cable length, installation, and powered device. PoE commonly supplies wireless access points, IP cameras, VoIP phones, lighting, intercoms, and other networked equipment.

The switch or injector must support the required PoE standard or vendor-specific power system, and the powered device’s demand must fit both the switch’s per-port capability and its total power budget. Cable category alone does not determine how much power is available.

Long runs, large cable bundles, high ambient temperature, small conductors, CCA construction, and poor terminations can increase heat and voltage drop. Higher-power installations should follow the equipment and cabling manufacturer’s bundle and installation guidance. Cisco’s PoE cabling guidance covers bundle and installation considerations, and the IEEE 802.3bt material addresses higher-power PoE considerations.

Are flat Ethernet cables a good choice?

Flat Ethernet cables are convenient for short temporary routes under rugs, along trim, or through tight spaces, but flat geometry is not inherently faster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Construction and bend tolerance vary widely. Some thin flat cables use smaller conductors and are less suitable for long runs or higher-power PoE. Use a normal round cable for permanent, long, in-wall, or PoE installations unless the flat cable has credible specifications and the installation requirements are modest.

What cable is suitable for in-wall, outdoor, and between-building wiring?

Choose the jacket rating and construction for the installation location, not merely the desired network speed.

Installation What to look for Main caution
Indoor patch cable Flexible stranded Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6A cable Do not assume a flexible patch lead is suitable for permanent walls
In-wall structured wiring Solid bulk cable with the required building rating and compatible jacks or patch panels Follow local fire and building codes
Plenum space Cable with the rating required for air-handling spaces Ordinary PVC patch cable is not automatically plenum-rated
Riser route Cable with the required vertical-shaft rating Requirements vary by jurisdiction and building
Outdoor or direct burial Appropriately outdoor-rated or direct-burial cable Moisture, UV exposure, grounding, and lightning require attention
Between buildings Usually fiber with compatible optical hardware Copper can create ground-potential and lightning risks

Plenum, riser, outdoor, and direct-burial requirements vary by jurisdiction and installation method. Consult local code and a qualified installer for permanent building wiring. Fiber is often the safer choice between buildings or wherever electrical isolation is important because fiber avoids many grounding, lightning, and EMI problems.

Which Ethernet cable should you buy for common situations?

Situation Recommended cable Reason
Existing 100Mbps or 1Gbps network Cat5e or Cat6 UTP Both are appropriate when the channel and equipment support the target rate.
Gaming PC, console, television, printer, or office device Cat6 UTP, pure copper, stranded patch cable Good general-purpose balance of cost, flexibility, and capacity.
2.5Gbps home network Cat5e can be sufficient; Cat6 is a sensible new purchase 2.5GBASE-T can operate over compliant Cat5e; Cat6 gives additional practical margin.
5Gbps network Cat6 5GBASE-T guidance specifies Category 6 cabling.
Short 10Gbps connection Cat6 if the channel is suitable; Cat6A for more margin Cat6 can support 10Gbps over shorter channels, while Cat6A is intended for the full channel.
New house or office wiring for 10Gbps Cat6A solid copper Best practical copper choice for a compliant 100-meter 10Gbps channel.
PoE camera or access point Compliant pure-copper Cat5e or better Power budget, resistance, distance, bundle size, and temperature matter.
25Gbps or 40Gbps copper data-center link Cat8 where equipment and length support it Cat8 is designed for specialized short high-speed links.
Outdoor, inter-building, lightning-prone, or very long route Fiber-optic Ethernet Fiber reduces electrical-grounding, lightning, and EMI concerns.

Which Ethernet cable features matter less than advertising suggests?

  • “Gaming” branding: Gaming performance comes from the equipment, link quality, latency, and network path—not a special gaming category of copper cable.
  • Gold-plated contacts: The label is not a substitute for correct category, conductor material, termination, and mechanical quality.
  • Very high MHz claims: Frequency is not internet speed, and a frequency claim does not prove that the connected ports support a faster Ethernet mode.
  • Flat shape: Flatness helps routing convenience but does not make a cable faster.
  • Color: Color can help identify cables but has no performance effect.
  • Cat8 as future-proofing: Cat8 is usually unnecessary for residential internet, streaming, gaming, and ordinary NAS connections.

What do RJ45, snagless, slim, and crossover mean?

Most consumer Ethernet patch cables use the familiar modular plug commonly called RJ45. Technically, Ethernet plugs are often described using 8P8C terminology, but the practical question for a consumer is whether the cable fits standard Ethernet ports and has the required category and construction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Snagless boots protect the locking latch when cables are pulled through a bundle. Slim cables are easier to route but can use smaller conductors, so inspect their specifications before using them for long runs or PoE. Keystone jacks and patch panels are the normal termination method for solid permanent cable.

A straight-through patch cable is the normal modern choice. Auto MDI-X means current Ethernet equipment generally does not need crossover cables, although legacy equipment can be an exception. Cisco’s Ethernet cabling documentation provides background on segment behavior and older crossover requirements.

What should you do if a Cat6 cable negotiates at only 100Mbps?

A Cat6 label does not rule out a damaged cable, bad termination, or defective port. Use this recovery sequence:

  1. Connect the same device with a short, known-good cable.
  2. Try another switch or router port.
  3. Check the operating system or switch interface for the negotiated link speed.
  4. Inspect the plugs, latches, bends, crushed sections, and visible termination problems.
  5. Replace the suspect cable if the known-good comparison restores 1Gbps or faster operation.
  6. For permanent wiring, test every pair and certify the channel rather than relying only on a basic continuity tester.

A 100Mbps link can result from a broken conductor, poor crimp, only two connected pairs, a bad port, an auto-negotiation problem, or a mislabeled/noncompliant cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a link work at 1Gbps but not at 2.5Gbps, 5Gbps, or 10Gbps?

A cable that works at 1Gbps has not necessarily proved that the complete channel can support a higher rate. Higher-speed failure can result from insufficient category or distance, lower-category patch-panel components, excessive untwisting at terminations, dense bundling, poor connectors, CCA conductors, unsupported device ports, or configuration and firmware limitations.

Check every component in the channel, including wall jacks and patch cords. Confirm that both Ethernet ports support the target mode. For permanent wiring, a certification test is more informative than a simple “link light” or continuity test.

Why does a PoE device repeatedly reboot?

A rebooting PoE camera, access point, or phone usually indicates a power-budget, resistance, voltage-drop, thermal, or termination problem rather than a simple category mismatch.

  1. Confirm the powered device’s PoE standard, class, and power requirement.
  2. Check the switch’s per-port limit and total PoE budget.
  3. Test the device with a short, known-good pure-copper cable.
  4. Inspect cable length, conductor size, connectors, and terminations.
  5. Check cable temperature and bundle conditions, particularly for high-power PoE.
  6. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s specified cabling and installation method.

Why might shielded cable perform no better?

Shielded cable may show no improvement when the environment has little meaningful EMI, the rest of the channel is unshielded, the shield is not correctly bonded or grounded, or the real fault is a damaged cable, connector, or auto-negotiation problem. Shielding is a complete-channel design decision, not a guaranteed speed upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the final Ethernet cable buying checklist?

  • Choose Cat6 UTP for most ordinary short device connections.
  • Choose Cat5e when the network is limited to supported 1Gbps or 2.5Gbps use and the price or existing installation favors it.
  • Choose Cat6A for new permanent 10Gbps wiring or a full-distance 10Gbps channel.
  • Choose Cat8 only for a specific short, compatible high-speed copper requirement.
  • Prefer 100% bare copper over CCA.
  • Use stranded cable for movable patch cords and solid cable for permanent structured wiring.
  • Use UTP in ordinary homes and offices; use shielding only when the complete channel can be correctly terminated and grounded.
  • Match the jacket rating to indoor, in-wall, plenum, riser, outdoor, or direct-burial installation requirements.
  • For PoE, verify power class, switch budget, length, conductor construction, bundling, and temperature.
  • For long outdoor or between-building routes, seriously consider fiber.
  • Buy the required length with some routing slack, but do not assume an unnecessarily long cable will support every speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cat6 better than Cat5e for home internet?

Cat6 is usually the better new purchase for a home because it provides practical headroom for 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps networking, but Cat5e is sufficient for many 1Gbps connections and can support 2.5GBASE-T when the channel and equipment comply. Neither cable makes a slow internet plan faster.

Do I need Cat8 for gaming?

Most gamers do not need Cat8. A pure-copper Cat6 UTP patch cable is normally sufficient for a gaming PC or console connected to 1Gbps, 2.5Gbps, or similar home networking equipment; Cat8 helps only when compatible high-speed equipment and a short specialized copper link require it.

Can Cat6 run 10Gbps?

Cat6 can run 10Gbps over shorter channels when the complete channel and installation conditions are suitable. Cat6A is the better choice for a new 10Gbps installation intended to cover the full 100-meter channel.

Is copper-clad aluminum Ethernet cable safe to use?

CCA cable may work in some short, low-power applications, but CCA has higher resistance than bare copper and is a riskier choice for long runs, permanent wiring, standards compliance, and PoE. Pure-copper cable is the safer default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should Ethernet cable be shielded?

Shielding is usually unnecessary in an ordinary home or office. Shielded cable can be appropriate near substantial electromagnetic interference, but the shield must continue through compatible connectors, patch panels, and grounding or bonding components.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy a reputable, pure-copper Cat6 UTP cable for most home and office connections. Use stranded Cat6 for movable patch cords, solid Cat6 or Cat6A for permanent wiring, Cat6A for full-distance 10Gbps, and fiber for many long or between-building routes. Do not pay a Cat8 premium unless your equipment and link design have a specific reason to use it.
