There is no single enterprise MCP gateway architecture or universally best provider. Some products aggregate managed connectors; others proxy MCP servers an organization operates or add policy controls around them. Compare where the gateway and control plane run, how identities and tool calls are authorized, what gets logged, who operates the servers, and how costs are metered.

What an enterprise MCP gateway does—and why the label varies

An MCP gateway can sit between clients and tools, but the product behind that label may do very different work. It might provide a catalog of managed connectors, route traffic to self-hosted MCP servers, enforce access policies, or help manage server lifecycles. Some offerings combine several of these functions.

That distinction matters because a connector catalog and a reverse proxy do not solve the same operational problem. A catalog may reduce the work of finding and connecting to integrations, while a proxy or policy gateway can govern access to servers your organization runs. Before comparing vendors, identify which functions you need and which systems will remain your responsibility.

Enterprise MCP gateway providers and alternatives

Option What the available product information establishes What to evaluate
Microsoft MCP Gateway An open-source reverse proxy and management layer for MCP servers in Kubernetes, with session-aware routing, authorization, and lifecycle management. Kubernetes operating requirements, workload identity, routing, and responsibility for running and maintaining the stack.
Microsoft MCP Server for Enterprise A separate, public-preview Graph-backed service for stated read-only Entra identity and directory scenarios. It follows applicable Graph permissions and tenant policies. Whether its Microsoft-specific scope fits the use case, preview limitations, underlying data licenses, throttling, and Graph activity logging.
Docker MCP Enterprise Gateway Docker describes identity-based access, policy evaluation, credential injection, routing, structured tool-call events, and deployment in the customer’s cloud. Identity-provider integration, policy administration, audit integration, and whether the deployment meets control requirements.
Permit MCP Gateway Permit documents hosted, customer-controlled, and fully on-premises deployment options. Customer-controlled and fully on-premises models require Enterprise plans. Control-plane placement, local policy decision point, network boundaries, and Enterprise plan pricing.
Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway AWS guidance identifies it as an MCP gateway option and describes semantic search for tool discovery. AWS alignment, discovery requirements, managed-service dependencies, and current AWS pricing and limits.
Managed connector-catalog gateways A June 2026 vendor-published comparison groups StackOne, Workato, Zapier, Merge, Arcade, Composio, and Pipedream in this category. The grouping is not an independent audit. Connector coverage, account linking, tenant isolation, data handling, and catalog or usage pricing.
General API or AI gateways, tunnels, and security proxies A vendor comparison identifies these as adjacent categories that may cover parts of an MCP gateway role; that taxonomy does not establish equivalent native MCP support. Confirm protocol behavior, authorization semantics, tool-call auditing, and support ownership.

Microsoft’s Graph-backed preview service and its open-source Kubernetes MCP Gateway are distinct products. The former is a Microsoft Graph interface for specific read-only scenarios; the latter is a self-hosted proxy and management layer for MCP servers.

How to compare gateways for an enterprise deployment

Deployment and control-plane location

Map the location of each component separately: gateway data plane, control plane, policy engine, downstream MCP servers, and logs. A product described as “customer cloud” or “customer-controlled” does not necessarily mean every component runs inside the same network boundary. Ask the provider to specify which components are hosted by the vendor, which run in your cloud or Kubernetes environment, and what network paths they require.

The documented examples span Kubernetes self-hosting, deployment in a customer’s cloud, and hosted, customer-controlled, or fully on-premises options. Those choices trade operational responsibility against control over placement. A self-hosted proxy gives your team responsibility for scaling, patching, availability, and observability; a managed service can reduce that work but introduces service and cloud dependencies to assess.

Identity, delegation, and credentials

Establish whether a request represents an individual user, a workload, or both. Then verify whether the gateway can preserve least privilege through the entire path to the downstream tool. Review how users authenticate, whether credentials are passed through or injected, how service identities are scoped, and what happens when a user’s permissions change.

Product descriptions provide examples, not proof that a configuration meets your requirements: Docker describes user authentication and credential injection, while Microsoft says its Graph-backed service follows existing Graph permissions and tenant policies. Test the actual identity flow and failure behavior in your environment.

Authorization granularity and policy enforcement

Ask whether policies can restrict access at the organization, server, tool, or individual-call level, and whether they are evaluated on every call. Docker describes a per-call policy evaluation path. For any provider, determine what the policy can inspect, whether denied calls are logged, how policy changes propagate, and how the system behaves if its policy service is unavailable.

Audit records, observability, and sensitive data

Request sample audit events and confirm which fields are recorded: caller identity, selected server and tool, policy decision, timestamp, outcome, and relevant request context. Also establish retention, export and monitoring integrations, access controls on logs, and treatment of secrets or sensitive tool arguments.

Microsoft directs administrators to Graph activity logs for its service; Docker describes structured tool-call events. Those statements do not establish identical event content or retention. Compare the records against your incident-response and compliance needs rather than treating the presence of logging as sufficient.

Server and connector lifecycle

Clarify who discovers, hosts, patches, scales, and updates the underlying servers or connectors. Determine whether the offering proxies servers you already operate, supplies managed connectors, supports tool discovery, or starts services on demand. For managed catalogs, assess connector coverage and tenant isolation; for self-hosted servers, assess the operational ownership and update process.

  • Firewall - monitors and filters incoming and outgoing traffic based on predefined security rules. The firewall also prevents sessions from reaching the LAN when they originate from the WAN, unless a remote access policy is enabled.
  • IDS/IPS - IDS (Intrusion Detection System) and IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) are technologies used to monitor network traffic for suspicious activity and potential threats
  • IDS - detects and alerts administrators about possible security breaches or malicious activity within a network. IDS analyzes traffic for known attack patterns or anomalies; it does not actively block or prevent attacks.
  • IPS - detects malicious activity and actively blocks or prevents those threats in real time. It can take automatic action to stop attacks, such as blocking IP addresses or terminating harmful connections.
  • IDS/IPS event logging - malicious activities detected or blocked will be displayed in the Threats module of the Instant On app and web portal.

Cloud dependency and portability

Record dependencies on a specific cloud, gateway platform, identity provider, or connector service. An AWS-aligned managed service may fit an AWS-centered architecture, while a Kubernetes proxy may offer a different operational and portability profile. Compare the practical migration path—not just protocol support—if you need to move servers, policies, credentials, or audit data.

How much does an enterprise MCP gateway cost?

The available product information does not establish comparable current enterprise list prices across providers, so it cannot support a reliable dollar-cost ranking or total-cost estimate. Price the whole operating model, not just the gateway subscription.

  • Gateway license or subscription, including any enterprise-only deployment tier.
  • Usage charges based on calls, users, tenants, servers, tools, or connector volume.
  • Cloud infrastructure, data transfer, and any required managed-service charges.
  • Identity-provider, underlying data, or connector licenses.
  • Support, implementation, operations labor, and log storage or retention.

Microsoft Learn states that “There is no additional cost or separate license required to enable the MCP Server for Enterprise.” Appropriate licenses for the data accessed may still be required. Microsoft’s current preview documentation also states a limit of 100 calls per minute per user and standard Microsoft Graph throttling for the applicable operation. These are details of that preview service, not a general gateway price or capacity benchmark.

Permit documentation accessed on October 8, 2026, states that its Community plan includes up to 1,000 monthly active identities, 10 tenants, one environment, and seven-day audit-log retention. Permit documents customer-controlled and fully on-premises deployment as Enterprise plan options; the available information does not give a comparable Enterprise price. Confirm current plan limits and terms against Permit’s live pricing information before making a purchase decision.

How enterprises should handle MCP gateways securely

A gateway can provide controls such as authorization, identity integration, credential injection, and audit logging, but adopting one does not by itself make an MCP environment secure. Security depends on configuration, policy coverage, threat handling, log retention, and clear operational ownership.

  • Inventory the tools and data each server can access, then define the least privilege needed for each user and workload.
  • Test authorization on individual tool calls, including denied requests and changes to user permissions.
  • Set rules for credential storage and injection, and ensure credentials are not exposed in tool responses or logs.
  • Review audit events and retention against incident-response requirements; restrict access to sensitive records.
  • Assign owners for gateway availability, server updates, policy changes, and response to compromised credentials or tools.
  • Validate the real deployment boundary, including control-plane dependencies and outbound network access.

Vendor descriptions of these controls are not independent security assessments. Validate the implementation and its failure modes in the architecture you intend to operate.

Is there one gateway for an entire enterprise?

A single gateway may simplify policy administration and routing, but the category includes products with different roles and deployment models. An organization could use a central policy layer for servers it operates while relying on managed connectors for other integrations. Whether one gateway is practical depends on network boundaries, cloud dependencies, identity design, tool ownership, and the required audit model. Define those requirements before deciding whether consolidation or a deliberate mix of services is appropriate.
