Choose a refrigerator that fits the opening in your kitchen and the way your household actually uses it, then compare the EnergyGuide kWh-per-year estimates of similarly sized models. Use ENERGY STAR qualification as a screening signal, but make the final decision from the exact model’s current label, capacity, dimensions, configuration, purchase costs and available incentives.

Start with capacity, household use and kitchen fit

Efficiency begins before you compare brands or features. A refrigerator that is larger than your household needs costs more to buy and gives you more volume to cool. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) states: “Select refrigerators that are an appropriate size for the number of people and level of use.” It also warns, “Oversized refrigerators will increase purchase costs and waste energy.”

Capacity is measured in cubic feet, including the refrigerator and freezer compartments. Your best size depends on household size, shopping frequency, how much fresh or frozen food you keep, accessibility needs and the physical opening. There is no universal cubic-foot formula that fits every home.

Use 16–20 cubic feet as a reference, not a rule

DOE’s 2021 Consumer Guide to Kitchen Appliances identifies 16 to 20 cubic feet as typical of the most energy-efficient full-size refrigerator-freezers with freezers. That is a broad, historical rule of thumb for full-size appliances, not a recommendation that every household should buy a refrigerator in that range. A smaller household that shops frequently may need less; a larger household or one that freezes bulk food may reasonably need more.

Midea 3.1 Cu.ft Mini Fridge with Freezer, Energy Star Certified, for Dorm | Adjustable Remove Glass Shelves, Reversible Door, Silver
  • E-Star Certificated: This mini fridge uses R600A high-efficiency compressor, only 270Kwh/Y energy consumption. Multi-air flow system ensures a more even air flow and temperature in the refrigerator, which can make your foods fresher.
  • Space-Saving Design: 3.1 Cu.Ft mini fridge offers efficient storage for snacks, beverages, and fresh food without taking up much space. 19.4"D x 18.5"W x 33"H footprint fits tight spaces like dorms, offices, bedrooms, and apartments.
  • Adjustable Temperature: mechanical thermostat allows you to keep your chilled foods at their optimum temperature from 32℉-50.0℉(1℃-10℃) for the fridge part and -11.2℉ to 5℉(-24℃ to -15℃) for the freezer part.
  • Reversible Door & Interior Light: The reversible door accommodates most kitchen layouts with a door that can open to the left or right. LED lighting inside provides ample illumination of the compact fridge, allowing you pick up your favorites in the dark.
  • Removable Shelves & Crisper Drawer: Detachable glass shelves, give you more space to store your food, which can keep the inside not in random. 2L bottle rack allows you to put daily milk and drinks bottles.

To avoid paying to cool unused space, estimate your normal weekly inventory. Include the freezer volume you really use, not only the fresh-food capacity shown in a listing. If you routinely pack the freezer, a compact model may force extra trips or a second appliance, defeating the savings from buying a smaller unit.

Measure the opening and the delivery route

Measure width, height and depth at the narrowest points of the cabinet opening. Record baseboards, countertops, nearby walls and any trim that could reduce the usable space. Measure the path from the delivery entrance to the kitchen, including hallways, stairways and turns.

Check the exact model’s installation instructions for required ventilation space, leveling requirements, hinge clearance and door-swing dimensions. DOE guidance does not establish one universal clearance value; manufacturers’ requirements differ. A refrigerator that technically fits the cavity but cannot open its doors fully, release heat as specified or pass through the doorway is not a practical choice.

Confirm whether the listed depth includes handles and doors. “Counter-depth” is a marketing description rather than a single standardized measurement, so use the manufacturer’s dimensional drawing. Leave room for the doors and drawers to operate without striking a wall or island.

Understand the two labels that matter most

EnergyGuide: compare kWh per year first

The yellow EnergyGuide label reports estimated annual electricity use in kilowatt-hours (kWh/year) and an estimated annual operating cost. Compare those figures among models with similar capacity and configuration. A 22-cubic-foot side-by-side refrigerator is not a fair efficiency comparison with a 17-cubic-foot top-freezer model unless you also account for the different volume and layout.

The operating-cost figure is a standardized estimate. Your bill can be higher or lower because your utility’s electricity rate, rate structure and usage conditions differ. Treat the kWh/year number as the cleaner starting point, then multiply it by your actual all-in electricity price when you can obtain that figure from a bill.

Do not compare a label from an old model with a label from a new model without checking the test-period and model details. Energy use can change when a model is redesigned, even if its exterior name remains similar. Save a photograph or PDF of the label for the exact model number you are considering.

ENERGY STAR: a useful screen, not a complete decision

ENERGY STAR qualification can quickly narrow a list to models that meet the program’s efficiency criteria. DOE’s 2021 consumer guide says ENERGY STAR-qualified refrigerators use 9% less energy than standard models. That is a guide-level comparison, not a promise that every current ENERGY STAR model will use exactly 9% less than every non-qualified model.

Verify qualification for the exact model number, not merely for a product family or a retailer’s category page. DOE’s FEMP purchasing guidance directs buyers to the ENERGY STAR qualified-product listing, where status and availability can change. A qualified model can still be the wrong choice if it is too large, does not fit the opening or has a higher total cost than a comparable alternative.

Choose a layout with its energy trade-offs in mind

Configuration affects both convenience and electricity use. DOE says side-by-side refrigerator-freezers and models with through-the-door ice typically use more energy than other models. The 2021 consumer guide says top-mounted freezer models use less energy than some bottom-freezer or side-by-side models. These are directional comparisons, not guarantees that every top-freezer refrigerator will outperform every other configuration. Use them to form a shortlist, then compare the actual EnergyGuide labels.

Configuration or feature DOE’s directional guidance Why the comparison can matter What to verify on the exact model
Top-freezer The 2021 DOE guide says these models use less energy than some bottom-freezer or side-by-side models. The simple layout is a useful efficiency reference, especially when capacity is similar. EnergyGuide kWh/year, total capacity, freezer capacity and door clearance.
Bottom-freezer Some models may use more energy than top-freezer models; the source does not rank every model. Freezer access and eye-level fresh food can justify the layout for some households. Compare only with similarly sized models and read each label rather than assuming a penalty.
Side-by-side DOE FEMP says side-by-side refrigerator-freezers typically use more energy than other models. The vertical split and additional door area can come with an energy trade-off. Exact kWh/year, usable shelf width, freezer capacity and whether the layout meets your needs.
Through-the-door ice DOE FEMP says models with through-the-door ice typically use more energy than other models. The convenience feature can carry an efficiency cost. Compare a model with the feature against a similar model without it, using the labels.
Other convenience features Not established by the cited DOE guidance as a universal energy ranking. Feature names alone do not tell you the appliance’s annual consumption. Use the exact model’s EnergyGuide estimate and installation requirements.

When two models have nearly identical capacity and layout, the lower EnergyGuide kWh/year figure is the more useful efficiency signal than a general rule about the style.

Compare refrigerators step by step

  1. Measure the installation space. Record the opening’s width, height and depth, plus the space needed for ventilation, door swing, hinges and drawers. Confirm the delivery path and the manufacturer’s installation drawing.
  2. Set a realistic capacity range. Base it on the number of people, shopping habits, fresh-food turnover and freezer use. Treat DOE’s 16–20-cubic-foot reference for efficient full-size models as a starting point, not a required target.
  3. Choose the simplest layout that works. Decide whether a top-freezer, bottom-freezer or side-by-side arrangement makes food accessible. Decide whether through-the-door ice is worth comparing against models without it.
  4. Build a like-for-like shortlist. Keep capacity and configuration close enough that the EnergyGuide comparison is meaningful. Record the exact model number, dimensions, total capacity and freezer capacity.
  5. Record each EnergyGuide estimate. Write down kWh/year and the label’s estimated annual operating cost. Do not substitute a retailer’s generic “energy efficient” description for the label.
  6. Check current ENERGY STAR status. Confirm the exact model number in the current qualified-product listing. Status, production and availability can change.
  7. Calculate your electricity cost. Multiply the label’s annual kWh by your household’s electricity price per kWh. If your utility uses time-of-use rates, use a reasonable blended rate or model the relevant periods instead of treating the national label cost as your bill.
  8. Add all purchase costs. Include the refrigerator price, delivery, installation, required water-line work, haul-away or disposal charges and any accessories required for operation.
  9. Check incentives before finalizing the budget. Look up your location and exact model through the ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder or your local utility. Count a rebate only after confirming its eligibility, amount, funding and deadline.
  10. Recheck fit before ordering. Verify the current listing’s dimensions and model number. A retailer can substitute a visually similar revision with different specifications.

Estimate operating cost and the value of an efficiency premium

Use this simple calculation for each finalist:

Annual electricity cost = EnergyGuide kWh/year × your electricity price per kWh

For example, enter the kWh/year printed on the label and the all-in rate from your utility bill. “All-in” should reflect the portion of your bill that changes with electricity consumption; if your bill separates fixed charges, do not attribute those fixed charges to the refrigerator.

To compare a more efficient refrigerator with a cheaper alternative, calculate the annual difference in energy cost and divide the extra purchase cost by that annual difference. This produces a rough simple-payback estimate. Use the actual prices, rates and label values for the two models. Do not claim a payback period from a generic example.

What the federal example does—and does not—show

DOE FEMP’s guidance updated in December 2023 gives an illustrative comparison using an 18.1-cubic-foot top-freezer model, 2023 ENERGY STAR efficiency levels, an electricity price of $0.099 per kWh and an assumed product life of 16.2 years. Under those federal-facility assumptions, the ENERGY STAR example showed $45 in lifetime energy-cost savings and the best-available example showed $46. Those figures are not a forecast for a household: your purchase prices, electricity rate, usage, maintenance, life span and model availability will differ.

BLACK+DECKER 12.1 Cu. Ft. Top Mount Refrigerator, BR1210HB, Black | 2 Door Refrigerator with Top Freezer and Adjustable Temperature Control, Full Size for Homes and Apartments, Energy Star
  • Spacious 12.1 Cu. Ft. Capacity: This full size refrigerator with freezer provides ample space for your fresh and frozen foods. Top freezer refrigerator is ideal for kitchens in homes and apartments
  • Adjustable Temperature Control: Maintain optimal freshness with the adjustable temperature control feature. Set the perfect cooling levels for both the refrigerator and top freezer sections
  • Frost-Free Auto-Defrost: Enjoy hassle-free maintenance with frost-free auto-defrost. Ensures your refrigerators stay free from ice build-up, making it efficient and easier to keep clean
  • Energy Star Certified: High performance and energy efficient compressor creates less heat and maximizes energy and dollar savings without sacrificing the features you want
  • Top Freezer: Our deep freezer has a freezer shelf ideal for frozen meals, packaged meats, leftovers, ice cream, and other foods. The wire freezer shelf is also removable to make space for larger items

The example is useful because it shows why the purchase premium matters. A refrigerator with a lower kWh/year label may not recover a large price difference through energy savings alone, while a modest premium can make sense where electricity is expensive or an incentive reduces the upfront cost.

DOE also describes energy as one of two price tags. Its 2021 guide says: “Every appliance has two price tags: what you pay to purchase it, and what you pay for the energy and water it uses.” For a refrigerator, include both tags and the costs of getting the appliance installed and removing the old one.

Account for installation, ventilation and failure points

Water and ice connections

If you select an ice maker or water dispenser, verify that the kitchen has a compatible water connection and that installation will not require unplanned plumbing work. Through-the-door ice is also a configuration with a typical energy trade-off, according to DOE FEMP, so compare it against a similar model without the feature if efficiency is a priority.

Clearance and heat release

Follow the manufacturer’s specified clearances rather than pushing the cabinet tightly against surrounding surfaces. Insufficient clearance can interfere with ventilation and door operation. The exact requirements vary by model and are not replaced by a generic “counter-depth” label.

Delivery and removal

Measure doorways and turns before scheduling delivery. Ask whether the installer will remove the old unit and whether that service has a separate charge. If a door must be removed to fit through an opening, confirm who performs the work and whether the model’s warranty or installation instructions impose conditions.

Know what current U.S. federal standards mean for a buyer

DOE’s refrigeration-products page says amended federal standards took effect on May 16, 2024. Depending on product class, manufacturers must comply with the new requirements by January 31, 2029, or January 31, 2030. The page references the standard in 10 CFR 430.32(a) and the test procedure in 10 CFR 430, Subpart B, Appendices A and B. DOE notes that planned milestones may change.

These dates are manufacturer compliance deadlines, not replacement dates for refrigerators already in your home and not a substitute for checking a model’s EnergyGuide label. A refrigerator sold during the transition still needs to be evaluated by its actual model information and the rules that apply to that product class.

In a 2023 announcement about amended standards, DOE projected 5.6 quadrillion Btu of energy savings over 30 years of shipments and $36.4 billion in consumer savings. DOE characterized the energy figure as an 11% reduction relative to products then on the market. Those are national projections across future shipments, not a measured saving for one refrigerator or one household.

Make an existing refrigerator use less electricity

Selection has the largest effect when you are replacing an appliance, but placement and operation also matter. These practices improve use of an existing refrigerator; they do not turn an oversized or inefficient model into a new high-efficiency appliance.

Set safe temperatures with the source’s ranges in mind

DOE FEMP advises setting the refrigerator compartment between 36°F and 40°F and the freezer between −5°F and 0°F. DOE’s 2021 consumer guide gives a refrigerator range of 35°F to 38°F and a freezer setting of 0°F. Because the published ranges differ slightly, follow the range in the applicable guidance and your appliance manual, and verify the actual temperature with an inexpensive appliance thermometer if the controls do not display it.

Reduce warm-air entry

  • Keep the doors closed as much as practical and decide what you need before opening them.
  • Check door seals for gaps, tears or areas where paper slips out easily when the door is closed.
  • Do not place the refrigerator next to a heat source when you have a reasonable alternative.
  • Allow a few inches behind the unit where the installation instructions permit it, so heat can leave the cabinet.

Clean and service according to the manual

The 2021 DOE guide advises cleaning coils on older models according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not remove covers or use a cleaning method the manual prohibits. Keep air passages inside the compartment clear enough for cold air to circulate, and replace damaged seals or other parts with compatible components.

Check rebates and incentives before you count them

Some utilities and local programs offer rebates or other incentives for ENERGY STAR-qualified appliances. Use the ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder and check your utility’s current terms. Eligibility can depend on location, model number, purchase date, retailer, recycling requirements and available funding. Neither ENERGY STAR qualification nor a listing on a retailer’s site proves that your household will receive a rebate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save the model number, receipt, EnergyGuide label and installation date if you apply. Confirm the deadline before buying; a program can change its amount or close while a refrigerator is in stock.

A final decision checklist

  • The refrigerator fits the measured opening and the full delivery path.
