Choose an edge security provider only after identifying which traffic or control you need it to manage. User connections to Atlassian Cloud, connections from Atlassian Cloud to your systems, and identity controls such as SSO and MFA are different security jobs. Map your current controls and integrations first; then assess whether an external provider fills a specific gap.
Start with the traffic path you need to protect
“Edge security provider” can describe services with different roles. Atlassian says Cloud requests reach the edge closest to the user, but that does not mean every organization needs a separate provider. Begin by identifying the direction of traffic and the requirement behind the proposed purchase.
- Users connecting to Atlassian Cloud: You may be evaluating traffic inspection, access policies, or a secure web gateway. Check that the service supports the domains and network behavior Atlassian requires.
- Atlassian Cloud connecting to your systems: Webhooks and application links can involve outgoing connections from Atlassian Cloud. Review the relevant ranges, firewall rules, and how your team will maintain allowlists.
- User identity and authentication: SSO, MFA, and federated identity are identity controls. Assess them with your identity provider; do not treat them as interchangeable with network-edge inspection.
Atlassian’s April 2026 change notes give a compatibility example: customers using third-party security tools such as Zscaler should allowlist *.atlassian.com to avoid disruption. This is a compatibility note, not an endorsement or a general instruction to buy a third-party service. Atlassian Cloud changes, Apr 13 to Apr 20, 2026.

Atlassian does not use fixed individual IP addresses for each Cloud app. It publishes address ranges and domains for customers that need restrictive network configurations. Atlassian also notes that network optimization and new edge regions can lead customers to encounter new addresses; it advises against limiting allowlists to region-specific ingress or egress networks. A provider’s ability to accommodate the documented requirements—and your own process for updating configurations—therefore matters more than a promise of a static regional boundary.

Review Atlassian’s live IP addresses and domains for Atlassian cloud apps before configuring controls. Confirm that the proposed service and your operations can handle the relevant domains, published ranges, DNS behavior, and required IPv4 or IPv6 paths. The documentation distinguishes inbound traffic to Atlassian from outbound connections to customer networks, so make sure the rules cover the direction your use case actually needs.
Compare providers against your actual requirements
The following are buyer evaluation criteria based on Atlassian’s documented architecture and requirements, not an Atlassian vendor scorecard. Ask each provider to explain how its service fits your specific traffic path and operating model.

| Evaluation area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Traffic path and purpose | Does the service cover user-to-Atlassian traffic, Atlassian-to-customer connections, or both? Which defined use case requires it? |
| Compatibility and updates | Can it support the required Atlassian domains, changing published ranges, DNS behavior, and relevant IPv4/IPv6 paths? Who maintains changes and exceptions? |
| Identity and access | How does it work with your SSO, MFA, and access policies? Is the proposal clear about which controls are network-based and which belong to identity management? |
| Logging and response | Which events can be logged, exported, retained, and investigated? How do those records fit your audit and incident-response workflows? |
| Residency and processing | What data does the provider inspect or store, where is it processed, and does that match the specific residency obligation you have? |
| Isolation and architecture | Does the requirement call for an external control, Atlassian-managed Isolated Cloud, or both? Which integrations and Marketplace apps must keep working? |
| Operations and failure behavior | Who owns configuration changes, outage triage, and exceptions? What happens if policy changes or a provider cannot reach a required service—does traffic fail open or closed? |
Separate data residency from isolation
Atlassian describes data residency as pinning an app’s in-scope data to a selected location. It is configured at the app level and does not mean every category of account data, logs, integrations, or other information is resident there. Atlassian’s documentation identifies globally distributed user account information and categories of logs, integrations, and other data that may be out of scope. Inventory the data and processing activity covered by your obligation, including what an external provider logs or inspects, before deciding whether a residency feature meets it. See Understand data residency.

For strict isolation needs, Atlassian describes Isolated Cloud as a dedicated single-tenant environment. Its documented login flow still routes requests through Atlassian Global Edge before forwarding them to the isolated environment, and identity can be federated through SAML or OIDC. Assess this architecture against the isolation requirement and the integrations your organization needs, rather than assuming that “isolated” means there is no edge or federation path. Map Atlassian’s controls before buying overlap
Atlassian describes security measures that may already address part of your requirements. Its Security Practices page covers encryption at rest, SAML 2.0 SSO integration, and minimum security requirements for Marketplace apps. Its contractual Security Measures, effective October 7, 2025, include centralized logging, monitoring audit events for unusual activity, firewall maintenance, network and host defense, and logical segregation of customer data.
Compare those controls with your organization’s needs and responsibilities. Their presence does not establish that identity, network policy, Marketplace apps, integrations, or operational processes require no further attention. Turn the decision into a practical review
- Document the requirement. State whether the need concerns user traffic, outbound Atlassian connections, identity, data residency, or isolation.
- Map existing controls. Record the relevant Atlassian settings, identity policies, firewall and proxy rules, integrations, and Marketplace apps.
- Validate network compatibility. Compare the proposed service with Atlassian’s current domains and published ranges, and decide who will track and apply updates.
- Review data and logs. Establish what the provider processes or retains and whether those activities fit your specific residency and audit obligations.
- Plan operations and failure handling. Assign owners for policy changes, exceptions, outage response, and the consequences of fail-open or fail-closed behavior.
- Evaluate isolation separately. If a single-tenant environment is the actual requirement, assess Isolated Cloud and its login and integration paths alongside any external controls.
Only select a provider when its documented capabilities address a defined gap and its compatibility, data handling, and operational responsibilities are acceptable. Atlassian publishes architecture and operational information at Atlassian Cloud architecture and operational practices.
