The best e‑reader is the one that works with your books, your library and your reading conditions. Start by checking whether your local library and existing book sources support the device. Then match the screen and lighting to what you read, size storage for the files you actually keep, and verify the exact model’s format support before buying.

There is no universal winner: library access varies by country, library system, title and device model, while front-light controls, storage and file-transfer workflows differ within each product family.

1. Start with your book ecosystem

An e‑reader is not just a screen. It is a doorway to particular stores, subscriptions, library systems and file formats. A comfortable display cannot compensate for a device that cannot open the books you already own or borrow.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16GB (2024 model) – 7" glare-free display and weeks of battery life – Black
  • Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
  • Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
  • Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
  • Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
  • Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
  • A retailer store or subscription you already pay for.
  • Loans from your public, school or university library.
  • Personal files, such as EPUB books from independent publishers, PDFs, documents or comics.
  • Audio files, if you want one device to hold audiobooks as well as text.

For each source, note the country in which your account and library operate. A feature advertised for one region may not be available in another, and a device that supports a format may still be unable to open a book protected by a particular form of digital rights management (DRM).

Check your library before you compare hardware

Library compatibility is a buying criterion, not an afterthought. OverDrive says Kindle-format loans are available only from libraries and schools in the United States. Libby says most Libby books can be sent to Kindle e‑readers in the United States, but that statement is still qualified by the individual title and library. If you live elsewhere, do not assume that a Kindle-format option will appear.

Eligible Kobo e‑readers can connect to participating libraries through OverDrive/Libby. Kobo’s requirements include a valid library card, a participating library service, a supported device and an internet connection for borrowing and syncing. Even when those conditions are met, a specific title may be unavailable, limited to another format or subject to a wait list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some newer PocketBook models offer PocketBook x Libby access, but availability depends on the current supported-device list and your library. Check the library’s own catalog and device instructions rather than relying on a brand-level assumption.

Questions to answer on the library website

  • Which ebook service does the library use: Libby, OverDrive or another platform?
  • Does the service list your country and library system as supported?
  • Which devices can receive a loan directly?
  • Can you download an EPUB file for transfer, or is reading limited to an app or browser?
  • Are the books you want offered as EPUB, PDF, Kindle Books or another format?

A library record may show an ebook but provide no download option. Treat the catalog’s actual delivery choices as the final authority.

2. Understand how EPUB, PDF and Kindle Books behave

File format affects readability, text controls and the effort required to move a loan onto the device.

Format or delivery type How it behaves Best fit Important limitation
EPUB Reflowable text adjusts to the screen; font size can be changed. Novels, essays and other text-led books where adjustable type matters. Adobe EPUB files may be DRM-protected and require authorization in Adobe Digital Editions. Open EPUB does not require that authorization.
PDF Fixed page layout; text does not automatically resize to fit the display. Zoom is available. Illustrated books, graphic novels, textbooks, forms and documents whose page design must remain intact. Small text can require repeated zooming and panning, especially on a compact screen.
Kindle Books Delivered through the Kindle ecosystem when the loan and region are eligible. Borrowers at participating U.S. libraries and schools who use a Kindle e‑reader. Loans expire at the end of the lending period, and the option is not a worldwide library feature.

Why EPUB usually feels easier for ordinary reading

Reflowable EPUB lets the same book adapt to different screen sizes and allows you to increase or decrease text size. Line length, margins and typeface can therefore be adjusted for comfort. This is the natural choice for most prose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DRM changes the transfer process. An Adobe EPUB loan may need to be authorized in Adobe Digital Editions before it can be opened on a compatible reader. An Open EPUB does not require that authorization. Confirm the file type and DRM instructions shown by the library before choosing a device.

When PDF deserves a larger screen

A PDF preserves the publisher’s page layout. That is useful for diagrams, comics, scanned pages and textbooks, but it means the page itself does not reflow when you enlarge the text. On a small e‑reader, you may need to zoom, move across the page and then zoom back out to continue reading.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16GB (2024 model) – 7" glare-free display and weeks of battery life – Jade

If PDFs make up a large part of your reading, prioritize display area and a viewing mode that makes landscape pages manageable. Verify the exact model’s screen dimensions and software behavior on its current specification page; the available evidence does not establish a single cross-brand screen-size or resolution comparison.

3. Match screen size to what and where you read

For mostly novels and adjustable text

Portability and hand comfort usually matter more than maximum page area. A compact reader is easier to hold one-handed and carry in a small bag. The important checks are legible type at your preferred size, even illumination and controls that let you change margins and line spacing if the software provides them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For PDFs, comics and illustrated books

More screen area reduces the amount of zooming required for a fixed-layout page. It also gives illustrations and diagrams room to remain visible without making labels tiny. Compare the physical dimensions of the exact models you are considering, not just the family name: a range may include both compact and large devices.

For mixed collections

Choose the smallest screen that makes your largest regular format comfortable. If you read novels most days but consult a textbook once a month, a very large device may add weight and cost you do not use. If you read technical PDFs every day, optimizing only for portability can create constant zooming and panning.

Check sharpness and software controls on the exact model

Screen size alone does not establish how crisp type or diagrams will look. Resolution, contrast, refresh behavior and margin controls are model-specific. The current research does not provide a complete, up-to-date resolution table, so use the manufacturer’s specification and manual for each shortlisted model and look for photographs or demonstrations of the content you actually read.

4. Treat lighting as a model-level feature

A front light lets you read without an external lamp, but the controls differ between models. Amazon’s Kindle guidance says users can adjust brightness and that compatible Kindles also offer brightness and warmth settings. “Compatible” is the key qualification: do not assume every Kindle, Kobo or PocketBook has both controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Brightness

Brightness adjustment matters when the room changes from daylight to a dim bedroom. Look for a built-in front light and a practical range of brightness settings. Verify how the control is reached—quick settings, a physical button or an on-screen menu—because ease of adjustment matters when you change rooms frequently.

Warm-light control

Warm light shifts the display toward a more amber tone. It can be useful if you prefer a less blue-looking screen at night, but it is not a universal requirement. If you read mainly in daylight or under a lamp, brightness adjustment may be sufficient. If you read in bed, check that the exact model offers a separately adjustable warmth control rather than assuming the feature from a product family name.

Front light versus an external lamp

A built-in light keeps your reading setup self-contained and avoids shining a lamp across a room. An external lamp may still be preferable for some PDFs or shared spaces where you want the display unlit. The practical question is whether you need integrated, adjustable light often enough to justify making it a selection criterion.

Amazon Kindle 16 GB (2024 model) - Light and compact, with fast page turns, and high contrast ratio - Matcha
  • Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
  • Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
  • Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
  • Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
  • Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.

5. Size storage for your real collection

Storage needs are driven by file type, not by a universal “number of books” estimate. Text-only ebooks are generally smaller than illustrated books, graphic novels, large PDFs or audio files, but individual file sizes vary widely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate your library into three groups

  • Text-heavy EPUBs: a typical novel collection usually places less pressure on storage than image-rich content.
  • Large PDFs and comics: scanned pages and high-resolution images can consume substantially more space than reflowable text.
  • Audio: audiobook files can be much larger than ebooks, so an audio-heavy plan changes the storage calculation.

Count the files you want available offline, not every book you have ever borrowed. Library loans may expire, and you can remove a finished title and download it again later when the service permits.

Do not convert capacity into a fixed book count

A storage number does not translate into a reliable number of books because file sizes differ and the operating system uses part of the advertised capacity. The reviewed official sources do not establish a current, cross-brand storage comparison. Check the exact model and market’s product page before quoting or relying on a capacity.

Leave room for future use

If your current collection is almost entirely novels but you expect to add textbooks, comics or audiobooks, avoid choosing a device that leaves no headroom. Conversely, paying for maximum storage is unnecessary if you borrow one book at a time and remove completed loans.

6. Know the borrowing workflows

Library access can be direct, app-based or computer-mediated. The same library service may offer different steps on different devices.

Kobo with built-in OverDrive/Libby

Rakuten Kobo support describes this as “The easiest way to borrow eBooks from your public library is using the built-in Overdrive/Libby App feature on your Kobo eReader.” That is the vendor’s description, not a guarantee that every library or title is supported.

  1. Confirm that your library participates and that your Kobo model is on the supported list.
  2. Connect the e‑reader to Wi‑Fi and open the library or OverDrive feature.
  3. Sign in with the required library card or account details.
  4. Search for the title and borrow it when the library offers an eligible ebook format.
  5. Sync the e‑reader so the loan appears on the device.

The built-in route is convenient, but a title can still be unavailable, reserved by another reader or offered only in a format the device cannot receive directly.

Kobo or another compatible reader through Adobe Digital Editions

Some libraries let you borrow on their website, download a licensed file and transfer it with Adobe Digital Editions.

  1. Borrow the title from the library website and choose the ebook download option.
  2. Open the downloaded license or file in Adobe Digital Editions.
  3. Authorize the application if the loan uses Adobe DRM.
  4. Connect the compatible e‑reader to the computer.
  5. Use Adobe Digital Editions to transfer the licensed book to the device.
  6. Eject the reader safely and open the loan from its library or books section.

This workflow requires a computer, a compatible reader and the correct authorization. If the catalog does not offer an ebook download, Adobe Digital Editions cannot create one.

Kindle and Libby in the United States

Libby says most Libby books can be sent to Kindle e‑readers in the U.S., while OverDrive limits Kindle-format borrowing to U.S. libraries and schools.

  1. Use Libby to find a title from a participating U.S. library.
  2. Borrow the title and select the Kindle delivery option when it is offered.
  3. Complete the delivery step through the Kindle account associated with the e‑reader.
  4. Sync the device and check that the loan appears.

Not every title exposes the Kindle option. Loans expire at the end of the lending period, so the book will be removed or become inaccessible when the loan ends.

PocketBook and newer Libby access

OverDrive identifies newer PocketBook devices with PocketBook x Libby access. Because supported models and regional availability can change, check the current device list and your library’s catalog before treating this as a purchase requirement.

7. Compare a shortlist on practical criteria

Once you have identified two or three compatible models, compare them using the same questions. Do not let one headline specification decide the purchase.

Criterion Question to answer Evidence to verify
Library access Can my library and country deliver the books I want to this exact model? Library catalog, service help page and supported-device list.
Formats and transfer Will my EPUB, PDF, Kindle or personal files open, and will transfer be direct or computer-based? Manufacturer format list plus the library’s delivery instructions.
Screen Is the display comfortable for my usual text size, and large enough for my PDFs or comics? Exact model dimensions, resolution and software controls.
Lighting Does it have a front light, brightness adjustment and the warmth control I want? Exact model manual or product specification.
Storage Will it hold my planned mix of EPUBs, PDFs, comics and audio? Current model capacity, with room reserved for system software.
Comfort Can I hold it for a long reading session and carry it every day? Exact model weight, dimensions, grip and button placement.
Price Does the current price fit the budget in my market? Current manufacturer or retailer listing for your region.

The available evidence supports the ecosystem and format distinctions above, but it does not provide a current, complete table of price, weight, battery life, waterproofing, screen resolution or storage across brands. Fill those values from current documentation for the specific devices you are considering.

8. A step-by-step buying process

  1. Identify your sources. Write down your retailer, subscription, library and personal-file needs.
  2. Check geography. Confirm the country attached to your library account and the region in which the device will be used.
  3. Test library delivery. Search the library catalog for two or three books you expect to borrow and note the available formats and delivery methods.
  4. Classify your reading. Estimate the share of ordinary EPUB prose versus PDFs, comics, illustrated books and audio.
  5. Choose a screen class. Favor portability for prose-heavy reading; favor more display area when fixed-layout pages are routine.
  6. Choose lighting controls. Decide whether you need only brightness or also adjustable warmth, then verify the exact model.
  7. Estimate storage. Include the largest files you will keep offline and leave capacity for growth.
  8. Verify personal-file support. Check whether the selected model accepts your EPUB and PDF files and whether DRM requires a computer workflow.
  9. Compare comfort and price locally. Use current regional specifications rather than an older review or a different edition of the same product line.
  10. Recheck before checkout. Library support, model lineups and software features can change; confirm the product page and library help information on the day you buy.

9. Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every device in a family has the same features

Front-light warmth, storage, library integration and supported formats can vary by model. Read the specification for the exact model name and generation.

Choosing by storage alone

Large capacity does not solve a format or library incompatibility problem. Confirm that your books can arrive on the device before paying for extra space.

Expecting PDFs to behave like EPUBs

PDF text keeps its page layout. If you frequently read small-print PDFs, select enough screen area to reduce zooming, or plan to read those files on another device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a library title can be downloaded

A catalog entry may support app or browser reading without offering a downloadable EPUB or PDF. Check the loan’s delivery choices before buying hardware for that title.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16GB (2024 model) – 7" glare-free display and weeks of battery life – Raspberry

Ignoring region restrictions

Kindle-format library borrowing is a U.S.-only library and school option according to OverDrive. Kobo borrowing requires a participating library and supported device. Treat country and library participation as part of the product specification.

10. Practical choices for common readers

The novel-focused commuter

Prioritize a light, comfortable device with adjustable text and a front light. Confirm that your retailer or subscription is supported and that your library’s preferred format can be delivered without an inconvenient transfer process.

The night reader

Prioritize brightness adjustment and, if you specifically want an amber tone, a verified warmth control. Do not infer either feature from the brand name; confirm it on the exact model’s manual or product page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The student or technical reader

Start with PDF behavior and screen area. Check how the device handles diagrams, landscape pages and zooming. If your library uses Adobe DRM, verify that you can complete the Adobe Digital Editions transfer workflow.

The comics and illustrated-book reader

Favor a display that gives fixed-layout pages enough area to remain readable. Storage should account for image-heavy files, and the device’s format list should be checked against the sources of your comics.

The heavy library borrower

Begin with the library’s service and supported-device list, then choose hardware. A direct built-in workflow may be preferable, but only when your library, region and target titles are eligible.

The mixed-format household

Compare each person’s dominant content rather than buying for an abstract average. One reader may value portability and adjustable EPUB text, while another needs a larger screen for PDFs; a single device may not optimize both.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Choose an e‑reader in this order: library and store compatibility, format and transfer workflow, screen size for your content, lighting controls for your rooms, storage for your actual files, then comfort and current price. Verify every conclusion against the exact model and your local library. That process prevents the most expensive mistake: owning a comfortable device that cannot deliver the books you want to read.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I read Libby books on a Kindle or Kobo?

In the United States, Libby says most Libby books can be sent to Kindle e‑readers, and OverDrive limits Kindle-format borrowing to U.S. libraries and schools. Eligible Kobo devices can borrow from participating libraries when the library, title and device are supported. Check your own library and region before buying.

Do I need warm light?

Only if you want a warmer screen tone, especially for night reading. Brightness adjustment and warmth control are model-dependent, so verify the exact model rather than assuming the feature is standard.

How much storage do I need?

Base the decision on the files you will keep offline. Text EPUBs usually demand less space than large PDFs, comics or audio, but file sizes vary; check the exact model capacity and leave room for growth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will PDFs look good on a small e‑reader?

A PDF keeps a fixed page layout, so small text may require zooming and panning on a compact screen. If PDFs are a regular part of your reading, consider more display area and confirm the model’s PDF handling.
