The best e-reader is the one that fits what you read, where your books come from, and how you handle them. Start with five questions: Do you read mostly novels or illustrated documents? Do you need color or a larger screen? Will you borrow from your local library? Do you want page-turn buttons, waterproofing, audiobooks, or handwriting? How much storage and battery capacity is enough?

For ordinary novels, a compact black-and-white reader is usually the simplest choice. Choose color for comics, diagrams, and illustrated books; choose a larger stylus-compatible model when you annotate PDFs or handwritten notes. Confirm library support and the exact specifications of the model sold in your country before paying.

Begin with your reading habits

Features matter only when they solve a problem you actually have. Write down the books and documents you expect to read during a typical month, then use that list to set priorities.

Novels and other text-heavy books

Black-and-white E Ink gives sharp, paper-like text and avoids paying for color hardware you may never use. A six-inch reader is light, easy to hold in one hand, and generally sufficient for novels. Adjustable text size and a front light matter more than color for long reading sessions.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16GB (2024 model) – 7" glare-free display and weeks of battery life – Black
  • Kindle Paperwhite – 7“ Paperwhite display with high contrast ratio and fast page turns.
  • Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
  • Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
  • Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
  • Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.

Comics, illustrated books and manga

Color makes covers, maps, charts and illustrations more useful. A color E Ink panel is still designed for reading rather than fast video, so compare the actual display and price instead of assuming that “color” is automatically an upgrade. Manga and other page-dense material can also benefit from a larger screen, because you need fewer zooms and page turns.

PDFs, textbooks and work documents

Large pages reduce constant panning and zooming. If you mark up documents, look for a model that supports a compatible stylus and has enough screen area for a usable writing margin. Stylus support is a specialist feature; it is unnecessary for someone who only highlights passages in novels.

Audiobooks and mixed media

If you listen as well as read, check whether the device supports Bluetooth audio and whether the books you want are available in its store or account. Audiobook availability and format support can vary by country and title, so verify the exact catalog rather than relying on a feature name alone.

Choose the screen: color, size and lighting

Black-and-white versus color E Ink

Black-and-white screens are the straightforward choice for prose. Color E Ink is worth considering when color conveys information: comics, children’s illustrations, cookbooks, travel guides, diagrams or highlighted study material. Color panels can have different contrast and refresh behavior from monochrome panels, so read the manufacturer’s specification for the exact model.

Six-inch, seven-inch and larger formats

  • Six inches: the most portable option for novels and commuting. It usually weighs less and fits small bags easily.
  • Seven inches: a useful compromise when you want larger type, comics or page-turn buttons without carrying a very large device.
  • Larger screens: best for PDFs, sheet music and documents that are frustrating to read at phone-like sizes. They add weight and cost, so measure your usual reading environment first.

Front light and text controls

A front light lets you read in dim rooms without a separate lamp. Adjustable text size is important if you change fonts, use large type or share a device with another reader. Warm-light adjustment can make evening reading more comfortable; for example, the 12th-generation Kindle Paperwhite specification lists adjustable warm light.

Check the book ecosystem before buying

Store accounts and purchased books

An e-reader is tied to the store account used to buy books. Make a list of the stores you already use and check whether those titles can be read on the new device. Do not assume that a book purchased in one ecosystem can be transferred to another: the specific title, digital-rights management (DRM), account and publisher permissions determine whether it opens.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16GB (2024 model) – 7" glare-free display and weeks of battery life – Jade

Personal files and sideloading

Kobo’s product information describes support for a wide range of e-book formats, and an independent 2026 comparison describes Kobo as more open for sideloading and broader file support than Kindle. “Supports a format” does not guarantee that every file will open. DRM, a library-loan restriction or an account lock can still block it. Check the current documentation for your exact model and test a representative file before moving an entire library.

Public-library borrowing

Library access is regional, not a universal device feature. The 2026 comparison reports that Kindle borrowing is limited to users in the United States, while Kobo borrowing depends on whether the reader’s local library supports OverDrive. Before buying, ask your library:

  • Which e-book service supplies its catalog?
  • Does that service support the exact e-reader model in your country?
  • Are the books you want available for the device, or only for a phone or tablet app?
  • Will a library loan carry DRM that prevents transfer or sideloading?

These checks are more reliable than a global “Kindle versus Kobo” verdict because catalogs and borrowing rules change by country and institution.

Current model examples and what they suit

The following specifications were documented on October 13, 2026. They are examples, not a complete market ranking. Regional configurations, stock and prices can change.

Model Screen and color Storage Notable features Best fit
Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation) Black-and-white E Ink; size and panel details should be confirmed for the market version 16 GB Adjustable warm light, USB-C, IPX8 waterproofing; manufacturer rating of up to 12 weeks’ battery life Readers invested in the Kindle store who want a waterproof, warm-lit general reader
Kobo Clara BW 6-inch black-and-white E Ink Carta 1300 HD 16 GB Compact monochrome format Portable novel and text reading
Kobo Clara Colour 6-inch color E Ink Kaleido 3 16 GB Color display and waterproofing listed by Kobo Readers who want color while keeping a compact size
Kobo Libra Colour 7-inch color E Ink Kaleido 3 32 GB Physical page-turn buttons; compatible with Kobo Stylus; stylus sold separately Color reading, larger pages and annotation

The Paperwhite details above come from Amazon’s UK support information and describe the 2024 release; specifications can differ by market or configuration. Kobo’s listings are US pages, so confirm the local edition before ordering. No single battery comparison is valid here: the “up to 12 weeks” Paperwhite figure and Kobo’s statements that readers can last days or weeks are manufacturer estimates measured under different conditions.

Prioritize handling features you will notice every day

Weight, shape and one-handed use

Compare the device’s dimensions and weight with the hand you normally use to read. A lighter six-inch model is easier to hold above your head or on a crowded train. A seven-inch reader shows more text but may need two hands, especially inside a protective case.

Rank #3
Amazon Kindle 16 GB (2024 model) - Light and compact, with fast page turns, and high contrast ratio - Matcha
  • Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
  • Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
  • Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
  • Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
  • Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.

Physical page-turn buttons

Buttons are useful if you read with gloves, have limited touch precision or dislike tapping the screen. The Kobo Libra Colour includes page-turn buttons. Touch-only models can be slimmer, but you should test whether the gesture and bezel position feel natural.

Waterproofing

Waterproofing is valuable at a pool, on a beach or beside a bath, but ratings have limits. The Paperwhite specification lists IPX8, while Kobo lists waterproofing for the Clara Colour. Check the exact rating and the manufacturer’s conditions; water resistance does not make a device indestructible, and saltwater, chemicals or an open charging port may be excluded.

Cases, glare and lighting conditions

A case adds protection and weight. If you read outdoors, compare how the screen looks under direct light; E Ink is reflective, but a cover or matte surface can change glare. If you read in bed, check that the lowest front-light setting is comfortable and that controls are reachable without shifting your grip.

Decide whether you need handwriting, highlighting or audio

Stylus annotation

Selected Kobo models support the Kobo Stylus. Kobo states that the stylus is sold separately, and compatibility is model-specific. Buy this combination only when handwritten notes, PDF markup or drawing are central to your workflow. For occasional highlights, the touchscreen and a finger are simpler and cheaper.

Highlights and exported notes

Check how the device stores and exports annotations if you study or conduct research. A reader may let you highlight a passage yet provide limited ways to retrieve those notes. Verify the current software documentation for export formats and account syncing before treating an e-reader as a full note-taking system.

Bluetooth audiobooks

Bluetooth support can connect wireless headphones, but it does not guarantee that every audiobook service works. Confirm the store, country and title rights. If audio is occasional, a phone may remain more flexible; if you want one device for reading and listening, make catalog support a purchase requirement.

Rank #4

Storage, charging and battery claims

How much storage is enough?

Text novels consume little storage, while comics, manga, audiobooks and large PDFs consume much more. Sixteen gigabytes is listed for the Kindle Paperwhite 12th Generation, Kobo Clara BW and Kobo Clara Colour; the Kobo Libra Colour lists 32 GB. Leave room for software and future downloads rather than filling the advertised capacity completely.

Interpreting battery estimates

Battery life depends on front-light brightness, wireless use, Bluetooth, page turns and standby behavior. Amazon rates the Paperwhite 12th Generation at up to 12 weeks; Kobo describes its readers more generally as lasting several days or weeks between charges. These are not results from one standardized test, so use them as directional estimates, not a promise of identical runtime.

Charging and travel

USB-C is convenient because the same cable may charge your phone and reader; it is listed for the 12th-generation Paperwhite. Before travel, download books, enable airplane mode if you do not need syncing, and carry the correct cable. A long battery estimate is less useful if a device lacks the connector or charger you already carry.

A practical buying process

  1. Inventory your content. Separate novels, comics, PDFs, library loans, personal files and audiobooks. Note which items are DRM-protected and where they were purchased.
  2. Set the non-negotiables. Choose black-and-white or color, minimum screen size, waterproofing, buttons, stylus support and Bluetooth audio. Mark anything that is merely nice to have.
  3. Verify local access. Check your library’s OverDrive or other service, your country’s store catalog and the manufacturer’s local support page.
  4. Compare the exact configurations. Confirm storage, screen type, wireless options, waterproof rating, included accessories and whether a stylus or case is extra.
  5. Check file and DRM behavior. Test one personal file and one library loan, if possible. Format acceptance alone is not proof that a protected file will open.
  6. Estimate real storage. Add space for the largest files you expect, especially audiobooks, comics and PDFs, then choose 16 GB or 32 GB accordingly.
  7. Review return and warranty terms. A return window lets you test glare, weight, button reach and library sign-in in your actual reading space.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying color for a text-only library

Color is useful when you can name the pages that require it. If every book is a black-and-white novel, spend the difference on a better light, case or larger text instead.

Assuming “waterproof” means any water is safe

IP ratings describe defined test conditions. Keep the reader away from saltwater, soap and charging while wet, and follow the model’s care instructions.

Ignoring regional library rules

A device that borrows books in one country may not do so in another. Confirm your own library before treating borrowing as a deciding feature.

Best Value
Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16GB (2024 model) – 7" glare-free display and weeks of battery life – Raspberry
  • Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.

Confusing file support with transfer rights

A compatible extension does not bypass DRM or a store account. Keep the original purchase or library-service rules in view when planning a migration.

Comparing battery numbers as laboratory results

“Up to” figures are ratings, not a common benchmark. Brightness, wireless connections and audio can reduce runtime substantially.

Match the device to a reader profile

The dedicated novel reader

Choose a compact black-and-white model with adjustable front lighting, comfortable text controls and enough storage for your library. Waterproofing is worthwhile if you read outdoors or near water.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The commuter who borrows books

Start with your local library’s supported service, then choose the lightest model that meets its requirements. Do not select a platform first and hope the library works later.

The comics and illustrated-book reader

Compare color E Ink, screen size and storage. A seven-inch model can reduce zooming, while 32 GB gives more headroom for image-heavy files than 16 GB.

The student or professional annotator

Prioritize a larger screen, stylus compatibility and an annotation workflow you can retrieve later. Include the separate stylus cost and verify PDF handling before purchase.

The traveler

Favor low weight, dependable battery, USB-C where available, waterproofing and enough offline storage. Download content before leaving reliable Wi-Fi and carry a spare charging cable.

Environmental information to put in context

Kobo’s comparison page claims that a device exterior contains a minimum of 85.5% recycled content: 75.5% post-consumer recycled content and 10% ocean-bound plastic. This is a manufacturer claim; the page does not state a publication year or independent audit. Treat it as one sustainability data point, alongside repairability, expected lifespan, packaging and how long you will keep the reader.

Bottom line: buy for the books you actually read

Choose black-and-white and compact for novels, color for meaningful illustrations, and a larger stylus-compatible model for documents and handwriting. Decide the store and library ecosystem before comparing hardware, because regional borrowing rules and DRM can matter more than screen resolution. Finally, verify the exact local model, storage, waterproof rating, included accessories and current availability; specifications and prices can change even within the same product generation.
