Choose an attack surface management (ASM) tool by proving, with your own authorized asset set, that it can discover internet-facing assets, attribute them correctly, keep them current, explain its evidence, prioritize the exposures that matter to your organization, and send actionable findings to the people who must fix them. Do not select a platform from a feature checklist or the size of its raw asset count. Run the same proof of concept for every candidate and compare known assets found, known assets missed, false positives, uncertain ownership, change detection, and the work required to remediate findings.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) cautions that there is no one-size-fits-all choice. The right product depends on your organization’s size and structure, the quality of existing asset records, current monitoring, and the security problems you need to solve.
Start by defining what you are buying
“Attack surface management” is used for several related capabilities. External attack surface management (EASM) focuses on assets reachable from the public internet. Broader ASM can include internal digital and physical assets, while some platforms combine external discovery with internal inventories and context under labels such as CAASM or ASM.

- “We need continuous visibility of internet-facing domains, cloud workloads, applications, APIs, certificates, and exposed services owned by our company.”
- “We need to reconcile unknown internet assets with our internal asset inventory and assign each finding to an owner.”
- “We need threat-informed prioritization and ticketing for exposures across subsidiaries and acquired companies.”
These are different projects. A product optimized for external discovery may not provide the internal ownership, configuration context, or workflow controls required for a unified inventory. Treat the product category, not its marketing name, as the first decision.
Define the discovery boundary before a demonstration
Discovery is only useful when the organization knows what “in scope” means. Create a written boundary that a vendor can use during the evaluation.
- List every legal entity, brand, domain, subsidiary, and recently acquired company to be considered.
- Identify cloud environments and accounts that belong to the organization.
- Separate assets operated directly by your team from infrastructure managed by suppliers, hosting companies, agencies, or partners.
- Document domains, IP ranges, applications, certificates, APIs, and cloud resources that are already known.
- Record disputed or uncertain ownership, including assets that appear related but may belong to another organization.
- Specify exclusions and the process for removing an out-of-scope discovery.
Only scan systems for which you have explicit authorization. Ask each vendor how it enforces exclusions, handles third-party infrastructure, and records the reason an asset was included or removed. A tool that discovers a supplier’s system but cannot distinguish it from your own can create operational and legal problems.

A realistic proof of concept needs more than a clean list of domains. Assemble a test set from several sources:
- Known, internet-facing assets that the tool must find.
- Known assets that are difficult to attribute, such as subsidiaries, old domains, shared hosting, and supplier-managed services.
- Recently created or changed assets, so you can observe freshness and change detection.
- Known out-of-scope assets that resemble your organization’s infrastructure.
- Examples of services or technologies that matter to your risk decisions.
Use the same seed information, scope, time window, and evaluation questions for every candidate. Record results in a comparison sheet rather than relying on a polished vendor walkthrough. A larger number of discovered records is not automatically better if ownership evidence is weak or the list is filled with duplicates and unrelated systems.
Evaluate discovery coverage and attribution together
Discovery and attribution are separate tests. Finding an IP address is not the same as proving that your organization owns or controls it.
Check the asset classes you actually operate
Ask each vendor to demonstrate how it discovers and inventories the following, where relevant to your environment:
| Asset class | Evidence to request | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Domains and subdomains | DNS relationships, registration or certificate evidence, and discovery path | How are forgotten, delegated, parked, and recently created names handled? |
| IP addresses and exposed ports | Address ownership, service observations, and scan date | Can shared or cloud-provider addresses be separated from dedicated assets? |
| Web applications and APIs | URLs, endpoints, application relationships, and technology identification | How are applications linked to a parent domain or business owner? |
| Cloud workloads | Cloud account or resource context and public exposure evidence | Which account or subscription supplied the relationship? |
| Certificates | Certificate names, validity dates, and linked hosts | Can certificates reveal assets that do not appear in the known inventory? |
| Exposed services | Service type, port, protocol, banner or other observation, and timestamp | How are transient services and service changes represented? |
| Technology details | Detected products, versions where available, and detection evidence | How is uncertainty shown when identification is inferred? |
Public DNS, certificate relationships, web presence, exposed services, and supplier connections are common discovery sources. Ask the vendor to explain every pivot from the initial seed: what relationship was observed, when it was observed, and why it supports an ownership claim.

Inspect attribution and confidence
For each discovered asset, require a record of provenance. It should identify the source of the relationship, the confidence or uncertainty level, the associated organization or entity, and the evidence supporting that association. Test the product with known assets it should find and with similar, known out-of-scope assets. A useful tool should make the distinction visible rather than forcing analysts to infer it from an asset name.
Look for controls that let you correct scope, merge duplicates, suppress a false positive, and preserve the reason for the decision. Ask whether those corrections affect future discovery or merely hide the record in one report.
Measure freshness and change detection
An asset inventory is quickly misleading if it cannot show what changed. Ask:
- How frequently does discovery run?
- Can administrators choose a daily, weekly, or on-demand cadence?
- Are targeted checks available for a specific domain, service, or cloud account?
- How soon does a newly exposed port, hostname, certificate, or application appear?
- Does the system retain history so an analyst can see when an asset or exposure first appeared and when it disappeared?
- Are changes delivered through alerts or integrations, or only visible after a user opens the platform?
Google Cloud’s Mandiant ASM documentation describes daily, weekly, and on-demand scans, while Qualys documentation describes continuous change detection. These are vendor descriptions, not evidence that all tools detect every change at the same speed. In your proof of concept, create an authorized, reversible change and measure the time to detection and notification.
Judge finding quality, not just finding volume
Have the vendor walk through several findings from initial discovery to a remediation decision. Each finding should make the following clear:
- The affected asset and its relationship to your organization.
- The observation or evidence supporting the finding.
- The source and timestamp of that evidence.
- The confidence level and any uncertainty.
- The severity rationale, including the factors that raised or lowered priority.
- A practical next action and, where possible, the likely owner or team.
Ask the vendor to show a low-confidence result, a duplicate, and a false positive. The interface should mark uncertain findings clearly and provide a controlled way to remove or suppress false positives without destroying the audit trail. If analysts must export data and manually reconcile every record before they can trust it, include that labor in the evaluation.
Test prioritization against your own risk decisions
Risk scores are not interchangeable between products. Ask how the platform ranks an exposure and whether your team can account for:
- Where the issue sits in the attack surface and how directly it is reachable.
- The likelihood that the weakness will be exploited.
- Potential business, safety, privacy, or regulatory impact.
- The importance of the affected application or service.
- Your organization’s tolerance, compensating controls, and remediation deadlines.
- Threat intelligence, including whether known-exploited-vulnerability information can influence priority.
Give every vendor the same sample cases and compare its ordering with the judgment of your security and business owners. A platform that ranks a low-impact test host above a critical customer application may require extensive tuning, even if its underlying discovery is strong. Ask whether scoring rules, suppression, exception handling, and ownership assignments are configurable and auditable.

Examine integrations and the remediation workflow
Asset discovery is valuable only when findings reach the people who can act. Review both inbound and outbound integrations.
Inbound context
- Asset databases or configuration-management records.
- Cloud inventories and account metadata.
- Identity, business-unit, application-owner, and environment tags.
- Existing vulnerability or exposure data.
Determine whether imported records enrich an external discovery, validate ownership, or merely appear in a separate view. Ask how conflicts are resolved when an internal record and an internet observation disagree.
Outbound action
- Security information and event management (SIEM) systems.
- Ticketing and case-management platforms.
- Webhooks, APIs, scheduled exports, and report formats.
- Notifications for new assets, material changes, and overdue remediation.
Use a test finding to follow the complete path: assignment, ticket creation, evidence attachment, status update, closure, and reappearance if the exposure returns. Confirm that the intended asset owner can see enough context to act without buying a separate analyst license.
Administration and access
Review role-based access, tenant or business-unit separation, audit logs, retention, raw-data export, reporting, and historical views. Microsoft’s Defender EASM documentation illustrates role-based access controls in one specific product; verify the exact roles and limits offered by every candidate rather than assuming that all platforms work the same way.
Match capabilities to your organization
The best fit depends on how your team already works.
| Situation | Capabilities to emphasize | Evaluation warning |
|---|---|---|
| Small security team with limited scanning | Accessible external view, clear evidence, simple prioritization, guided ownership and remediation | A complex platform may create more administration than visibility. |
| Established monitoring and asset records | Reliable data feeds, imports, APIs, exports, integrations, history, and granular access control | A standalone dashboard may duplicate existing work. |
| Rapidly changing cloud or application estate | Fast discovery, configurable cadence, on-demand checks, continuous change detection, and alerts | A weekly snapshot can leave newly exposed assets unseen for too long. |
| Multiple subsidiaries or acquisitions | Entity boundaries, separate ownership, scope controls, disputed attribution, and cross-entity reporting | Unqualified expansion from a seed can mix unrelated organizations. |
| High remediation volume | Risk tuning, deduplication, suppression, ticketing, assignment, and measurable closure workflows | Large finding counts can overwhelm owners if prioritization is weak. |
The NCSC’s guidance is explicit that product choice depends on organizational size and nature, existing records, current monitoring or vulnerability scanning, and present security challenges. Reassess the fit when those conditions change.
Run a comparable proof of concept
A structured evaluation produces more useful evidence than separate demonstrations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Write the test plan. Define the authorized scope, seed information, known-asset list, out-of-scope examples, asset classes, success measures, permitted scan methods, and evaluation dates.
- Give every candidate the same starting data. Do not provide one vendor with a richer inventory unless that difference is itself being tested.
- Observe initial discovery. Record when each known asset appears, how it is attributed, and what discovery path or evidence is shown.
- Review uncertain results. Sample high-confidence, low-confidence, duplicate, supplier-related, and clearly out-of-scope records. Test correction and suppression controls.
- Inspect findings in detail. Require evidence, timestamps, severity rationale, confidence, and recommended action for the same types of exposure.
- Test a controlled change. Within authorization, add or remove a record, alter an exposed service, or change a certificate relationship. Measure detection time, alerting, and history.
- Exercise integrations. Import ownership context, export raw data, create a ticket, update its status, and verify that closure and reappearance are represented correctly.
- Calculate operational effort. Count analyst hours needed to validate assets, remove false positives, assign owners, tune prioritization, and maintain integrations.
- Score and document exceptions. Record missed known assets and unresolved attribution questions explicitly. Do not let a vendor workaround become an undocumented dependency.

What the named product descriptions do—and do not—tell you
Several products illustrate different approaches, but their official descriptions are not independent comparative tests. Use them as questions to validate in your own environment.
| Product example | Published capability description | What you still need to test |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud Mandiant ASM | Continuous monitoring, discovery from organizational seed information, technology and service identification, and daily, weekly, or on-demand scans | Coverage, attribution accuracy, detection speed, and operational effort for your authorized scope |
| Microsoft Defender EASM | Recursive infrastructure discovery through connections to known legitimate assets, infrastructure and vulnerability insights, and role-based access | How well recursive relationships map to your ownership model and how accurately findings are prioritized |
| Qualys EASM | Inventory of domains, subdomains, cloud workloads, web applications, APIs, certificates, services, exposed ports, vulnerabilities, and change detection | Whether each asset class is relevant and accurate in your environment, and how changes reach owners |
| Tenable One ASM | Focus on external-facing assets and exposure data, with a distinction from centralized asset inventory | How the external view integrates with your existing inventory and remediation process |
None of these descriptions establishes a market-wide ranking, independent efficacy, pricing, deployment requirements, or service-level commitment. Verify current terms directly and require a hands-on evaluation.

Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing the largest asset count
Problem: Raw volume rewards weak attribution and duplicates.
Fix: Score confirmed ownership, known-asset recall, out-of-scope discrimination, and analyst time required to validate results.
Assuming recursive discovery proves ownership
Problem: A technical relationship can lead to a supplier, shared host, or unrelated entity.
Fix: Require provenance, confidence indicators, and a documented inclusion or exclusion decision for every ambiguous relationship.

Comparing vendor risk scores as if they were universal
Problem: Different data, formulas, and business assumptions produce different rankings.
Fix: Run the same sample cases through each product and compare the rationale with your own risk owners’ decisions.
Ignoring change detection
Problem: A monthly or weekly inventory can miss short-lived but consequential exposure.

Procurement checklist
- Our buying objective is external discovery, unified inventory, exposure prioritization, or a clearly defined combination.
- Legal entities, domains, cloud environments, suppliers, and exclusions are documented.
- Known assets and known out-of-scope assets form a test set.
- Every candidate receives identical seeds, scope, timing, and test cases.
- Discovery sources, pivots, ownership evidence, and confidence are visible per asset.
- Domains, subdomains, IPs, workloads, applications, APIs, certificates, services, and technology details are tested where relevant.
- Freshness, on-demand checks, change history, and alert timing are measured.
- Findings show evidence, provenance, uncertainty, severity rationale, and next action.
- Risk ranking is compared with organizational impact, exploit likelihood, location, and threat intelligence.
- Imports, exports, SIEM or ticketing integrations, roles, audit history, and reports are exercised.
- Analyst validation and remediation effort are included in the total evaluation.
- Pricing, data handling, support, retention, and contract assumptions are verified for the intended edition.
The decisive question is not which platform lists the most assets. It is which candidate gives your team a trustworthy, current explanation of what is exposed, why it belongs to you, how urgent it is, and what the responsible owner should do next.
