The correct amplifier answer depends on which Linn 343 you own. The 343 Exakt Integrated has its Exakt digital crossover, DAC architecture and all of its amplification built into each cabinet, so it is not chosen like a passive loudspeaker. The 343 PWAB (Passive with Aktiv Bass) has a passive upper array that needs an external stereo power amplifier, while each speaker’s bass section has its own 700 W Linn Power DAC.

Before comparing amplifier models, read the label or documentation and confirm the architecture. Then match the PWAB amplifier to the upper-array wiring scheme, your room and listening distance, the preamplifier’s outputs, and the amplifier’s published load and protection behavior. Linn has not published a 343-specific wattage, impedance, minimum-impedance or sensitivity recommendation on the public 343 information reviewed, so a single “use at least X watts” rule would be misleading.

First identify which Linn 343 you have

Linn uses the 343 name for two substantially different systems. They look related, but their signal paths and amplifier requirements are not interchangeable.

Version Speaker architecture Amplification inside each speaker External amplifier requirement
343 Exakt Integrated Four-way active speaker with an integrated Exakt digital crossover and DAC architecture 700 W ×2 and 170 W ×3 per speaker, according to Linn (2026) No conventional external power amplifier for the drivers; configure it as an Exakt-system speaker
343 PWAB Three-way passive upper array plus Aktiv Bass 700 W internal Linn Power DAC for the bass section of each speaker External stereo power amplification for the upper array

How to confirm the version

Check the model name on the original invoice, rear-panel markings and installation paperwork. A PWAB cabinet has three pairs of banana-compatible binding posts for the upper array and a separate XLR connection for the internally amplified bass. The Exakt Integrated is documented as a four-way active Exakt speaker rather than a passive speaker with conventional binding-post input.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the paperwork is unclear, stop before connecting an amplifier. Photograph the rear panel and ask a Linn dealer to identify the exact version and its approved wiring arrangement. Connecting an external power amplifier on the assumption that every 343 is passive risks putting the wrong signal on the wrong input.

What the 343 Exakt Integrated needs

The Exakt Integrated contains the crossover, DAC architecture and driver amplification. Linn specifies 700 W ×2 and 170 W ×3 of internal amplification per speaker. That specification describes the electronics already installed in each cabinet; it is not a target for an external amplifier.

Build the system around the Exakt signal path

Choose the source, network player or controller that Linn specifies for the Exakt system, and follow the installation procedure for that platform. The important decision is compatibility with the Exakt digital signal path, not the output wattage of a separate stereo power amp. A conventional power amplifier connected to the speaker’s driver-level inputs is not the normal configuration for this version.

Do not treat the 343 Exakt numbers as a sizing formula

The 700 W and 170 W figures are the speaker’s internal amplifier allocation. They do not mean that a 700 W external amplifier is required, nor do they establish a safe external power rating for another version. Keep the two architectures separate when reading specifications or discussing an upgrade.

What the 343 PWAB needs

The PWAB divides the work between an external amplifier and electronics inside the speaker. The three-way upper array is passive and receives power through three pairs of binding posts. The bass section is Aktiv: each speaker has a separate XLR bass connection and a 700 W internal Linn Power DAC.

The external amplifier drives the upper array

Your external amplifier, or amplifier system, must feed the upper-array binding posts. The separate XLR is for the internally amplified bass section; it is not a replacement for the upper-array speaker connections and should not be used as though it were a conventional speaker-level input.

Decide the wiring configuration before buying hardware

The three binding-post pairs allow different installation arrangements. Linn’s installation should establish whether your system is intended to be:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Single-wire: one amplifier output is connected through the specified links or terminals.
  • Bi-wire: two cable runs from an appropriate amplifier arrangement feed the designated sections.
  • Tri-wire: three cable runs feed the three upper-array sections.
  • Active: separate amplifier channels are assigned to sections according to a Linn-approved configuration.

Do not remove links, split channels or assign amplifier outputs by trial and error. Have the dealer confirm which terminals are linked, which sections are being driven and whether the intended amplifier count matches the installation plan.

How to size a PWAB amplifier without inventing a wattage rule

Linn’s public 343 information reviewed for this guide does not state a recommended amplifier wattage, nominal impedance, minimum impedance or sensitivity. That prevents a defensible statement such as “the 343 needs at least 200 W” or “any 50 W amplifier is sufficient.” The correct choice uses the speaker’s electrical data when Linn provides it for your installation, plus your room and listening goals.

Use these five inputs to define the requirement

  1. Room size: a large room and long listening distance require more clean output than near-field listening in a small room.
  2. Target level: occasional moderate listening places different demands on an amplifier than sustained high-level music.
  3. Program material: recordings with wide dynamics and heavy bass transients expose current and protection limits more quickly than compressed material. The PWAB’s internal bass amplifier does not remove the upper array’s demand for clean power.
  4. Installation mode: single-wire, bi-wire, tri-wire and active configurations can change the number of amplifier channels and the load each channel sees.
  5. Published load data: use Linn’s current technical information or the dealer’s installation documentation for the actual 343 version. Do not substitute a different Linn model’s impedance or sensitivity figures.

Prioritize current delivery and protection behavior

Continuous power is only one comparison point. Check the amplifier’s rated output into the load specified for the 343, its current capability, and how its protection circuit behaves during demanding passages. An amplifier that folds back, clips or shuts down at your normal listening level is a poor match even if its headline wattage looks impressive.

Look for protection information covering over-temperature, short circuit and low-impedance operation. The exact limits matter more than a large number quoted into an easier load. If the amplifier manufacturer does not publish the relevant load or protection conditions, ask for written confirmation before purchase.

Check the preamplifier, streamer and gain structure

The PWAB’s bass connection and upper-array connection are separate parts of the system, so map every signal path before ordering cables.

Confirm the available outputs

Identify whether your preamplifier or streamer provides RCA, XLR or both, and whether the chosen power amplifier accepts the same connector type. If an adapter or balanced-to-unbalanced connection is required, verify its wiring and level compatibility rather than assuming that an XLR plug automatically provides a balanced signal.

Match gain and level controls

Different amplifiers can have different voltage gain and input sensitivity. A mismatch can leave you with insufficient volume, excessive noise or very little usable travel on the preamplifier’s volume control. Ask the installer to document the gain settings for the upper-array amplifier and the level relationship to the Aktiv bass input. Do not compensate for a gain mismatch by turning one section up until the tonal balance merely sounds acceptable; that can reduce headroom or upset the intended integration.

Keep the bass XLR in its intended role

The separate XLR on each PWAB carries the signal for the internally amplified bass section. Confirm the source component and cable assignment with the installer, label the left and right channels, and verify that the cable is connected to the correct speaker. The upper-array speaker cables remain connected to the binding posts even when the bass XLR is working correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mono, stereo and multi-amplifier choices

A true stereo power amplifier can drive a conventional upper-array arrangement when its channel count and the approved wiring scheme match. An active or tri-wire installation may call for more amplifier channels or multiple amplifier units. The choice is architectural rather than a contest between stereo and monoblock badges.

When a stereo amplifier is the sensible starting point

For a single-wire or dealer-approved bi-wire installation, a stereo amplifier keeps the signal path and channel assignment straightforward. Confirm that both channels are stable with the 343’s specified load and that the amplifier’s input connectors match your preamplifier.

When multiple channels are justified

Multiple amplifiers make sense only when the installation plan assigns them to separate upper-array sections or when the dealer has specified an active configuration. Adding amplifiers without an approved crossover, channel map and level-calibration procedure can create wiring errors, unequal gain and accidental damage.

Do not rank amplifiers by wattage alone

Compare continuous output under the relevant load, current delivery, protection behavior, input type, gain, channel topology, ventilation requirements, warranty and service support, and the total cost of the complete system. Because the 343’s electrical limits and Linn’s preferred operating range are not published in the reviewed public specification, wattage-only rankings cannot establish a reliable winner.

Are Linn Klimax Solo or Akurate amplifiers guaranteed matches?

Linn currently lists the Klimax Solo and Akurate power-amplifier families in its catalog, but the reviewed material does not publish a 343-specific pairing recommendation. Treat either family as a candidate for dealer verification, not as an automatic match.

For a proposed pairing, request confirmation of the exact 343 version, wiring mode, amplifier count, load stability, gain, connector assignment and any required configuration files. The answer may differ between a passive upper-array setup and an active installation, so a recommendation made for one cannot be generalized to the other.

Do not reuse a different Linn amplifier specification as a 343 recommendation

Linn’s Selekt DSM documentation lists a general amplifier specification of 100 W per channel into 4 ohms and 50 W per channel into 8 ohms in the current page copy. Those figures describe that Selekt amplifier specification; they are not a published recommendation for the 343 PWAB and do not establish that the 343 presents either of those loads.

This distinction is important when reading forum posts or dealer discussions. A specification from another product can be useful background, but it cannot replace the 343’s own load data or a system-specific installation assessment.

For the PWAB, include the amplifier, suitable speaker cables, any required balanced or unbalanced interconnects, installation and calibration, rack space and ventilation. A lower-cost amplifier can become the more expensive choice if it requires extra conversion hardware, additional channels or replacement after protection trips.

Installation checklist for a 343 PWAB

  1. Record the model: confirm that the cabinet is PWAB, not Exakt Integrated.
  2. Photograph the rear panel: capture the three binding-post pairs, labels and bass XLR before disconnecting anything.
  3. Obtain the wiring plan: have the Linn dealer specify single-wire, bi-wire, tri-wire or active operation and identify any links that must remain or be removed.
  4. Choose the channel count: select a stereo amplifier or multiple amplifiers that provide exactly the channels required by that plan.
  5. Verify electrical data: compare continuous output, current capability and protection behavior with the load information supplied for your 343 installation.
  6. Map the signal path: label left and right upper-array cables and the two bass XLR connections; confirm RCA/XLR compatibility and gain.
  7. Provide ventilation: leave the clearance specified by the amplifier manufacturer and avoid enclosing a high-power unit in an unventilated cabinet.
  8. Power down before rewiring: switch off source, amplifiers and speakers as directed, then check polarity and terminal tightness.
  9. Commission at low level: play a familiar recording, confirm that each channel and bass section works, and raise the level gradually while watching for clipping, hum or protection shutdown.
  10. Document the final setup: record amplifier model, channel assignment, gain settings, cable destinations and any dealer configuration so the system can be restored after service.

Troubleshooting amplifier-matching problems

No sound from the upper array

Check that the amplifier is connected to the PWAB binding posts, not only to the bass XLR, and that the source is routed to the correct left and right channels. Confirm the selected wiring mode and any required terminal links with the installation plan.

Bass works but the speaker sounds thin

A working bass XLR does not prove that the passive upper array is connected. Inspect the upper-array speaker cables, amplifier output selection and terminal assignment. If the installation is active, verify that every assigned amplifier channel is powered and receiving the intended signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The amplifier shuts down or becomes very hot

Stop increasing the volume. Check ventilation, shorted speaker cables and the amplifier’s specified load range. Repeated protection trips indicate that the amplifier or wiring needs professional review; do not defeat the protection circuit or substitute an unverified amplifier.

Hum, hiss or unequal level

Confirm balanced/unbalanced connections, left/right channel routing and gain settings. A connector adapter can alter grounding or signal level, so use the cable type and pin assignment approved for the components. If one speaker is louder, stop and have the installer verify gain and bass-level calibration rather than correcting it with arbitrary volume changes.

Questions the published specifications cannot answer alone

The available public 343 information does not establish a universal amplifier wattage, a minimum safe impedance, a sensitivity figure or a preferred model pairing for every PWAB installation. Those omissions are not a reason to guess; they are a reason to obtain the version-specific technical data and wiring plan before buying. The room, listening distance, target level and number of amplifier channels can change the appropriate solution even when two owners have the same speaker model.

Practical decision path

  1. If the label says Exakt Integrated, do not shop for a conventional external speaker amplifier. Build around the Exakt digital signal path and its integrated amplification.
  2. If it says PWAB, plan for an external stereo power amplifier or an approved multi-amplifier system for the upper array, plus the internal bass connection.
  3. Before selecting a model, get the installation’s wiring mode, load information, channel count, connector requirements and gain relationship in writing.
  4. Compare candidates on current delivery, protection behavior, input compatibility, topology, ventilation, service support and total system cost—not headline watts alone.
  5. Have the final system installed or checked by a Linn-qualified dealer, particularly if you are changing from single-wire to tri-wire or active operation.
