If you want a touchscreen you can carry around the house, choose among Amazon’s Alexa Tablet 8, Alexa Tablet 11, and Alexa Tablet 12 Pro. If you want Alexa and a screen to stay visible in one room, compare Echo Show smart displays instead. A compatible older Fire tablet can use Show Mode, but not every Fire tablet supports it.
Decide whether you need a tablet or a room display
An Alexa tablet is the better fit when you want a portable touchscreen for general tablet use as well as Alexa. Screen size, resolution, memory, and storage distinguish the three Alexa Tablet models.
Echo Show is a stationary smart-display family. Amazon describes its screens as adding visual responses to Alexa and supporting uses such as video, security-camera feeds, and photos. Its widgets can provide quick access to calendar, reminders, smart home, shopping lists, music, notifications, games, sounds, news, and weather; the available number, size, and arrangement vary by device. See Amazon’s Echo Show lineup guide and widgets guide.

Amazon’s 2026 specifications establish a clear screen-and-memory progression. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent performance results.

- Feels as good as it looks: Thin, light, and durable aluminum unibody design.
- New 2.8K Nanomatte display: Watch, read, and create with anti-glare brilliance. Smooth 120Hz scrolling. 3:2 aspect ratio for entertainment and multitasking.

| Model | Display | Memory | Storage | Best fit to consider |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alexa Tablet 8 (2026) | 8.7-inch IPS, 1340 × 800 | 4 GB LPDDR5 | 64 GB or 128 GB | Compact handheld use when portability matters more than screen resolution or memory. |
| Alexa Tablet 11 (2026) | 11-inch IPS, 2560 × 1600 | 8 GB LPDDR5 | 64 GB or 128 GB | A larger, sharper screen for reading, media, or shared viewing. |
| Alexa Tablet 12 Pro (2026) | 11.95-inch IPS, 2800 × 1840 | 8 GB or 16 GB | 128 GB or 256 GB | The largest and highest-resolution screen in this tablet group. |
For a display you will hold, the 8.7-inch model is the smallest; the 11-inch and 11.95-inch models give more viewing area. The Tablet 12 Pro has the highest listed resolution, but the specifications alone do not establish whether its price, if higher, makes it better value. Amazon’s specification references: Alexa Tablet 8, Alexa Tablet 11, and Alexa Tablet 12 Pro.
Choose an Echo Show when the screen should stay put
If the screen is intended to serve a kitchen, living area, or another shared spot, the current Echo Show lineup includes models with substantially larger panels. Amazon’s specifications give these 2024 models as follows:
Rank #2

| Model | Official display specification | Selection consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen, 2024) | 15.6-inch, 1920 × 1080 (1080p) | A large fixed display for shared household information and video. |
| Echo Show 21 (2024) | 21.4-inch, 1920 × 1080 (1080p) | The largest display in the cited lineup; includes built-in Fire TV and Alexa. |
Amazon’s lineup guide also lists Echo Show 5 and 8, and the Echo Show 11 (2025 release). The cited lineup information confirms the Echo Show 11 model but does not provide detailed consumer-comparison specifications for it. Check the current local listing for its exact details. The 2024 Echo Show specifications are in Amazon’s Echo device specification reference.

Use these practical selection checks
- Where you will use it: Pick a tablet if you expect to carry it between rooms or use it in hand. Pick an Echo Show if you want a screen that remains in a particular room.
- Who needs to see the screen: A larger screen is easier to share across a room; for handheld reading, consider whether a smaller device is more convenient.
- What you want on screen: General tablet tasks point toward an Alexa Tablet. Alexa widgets and household display functions are documented Echo Show features.
- Which exact model supports the feature: Amazon’s Adaptive Content setting, which adapts the interface to viewing distance, is listed for Echo Show 8 (2nd generation and newer), Echo Show 10 (2nd generation), Echo Show 11 (2025 release), both Echo Show 15 generations, and Echo Show 21. It is not listed for every Echo Show. Check Amazon’s Adaptive Content compatibility guide.
- What remains unknown from specifications: The cited official information does not establish current street prices or stock, tablet battery life, comparative speed, or long-term reliability. Check current listings for the market where you plan to buy; do not use screen or memory specifications as a substitute for those details.
Can a Fire tablet work as an Alexa display?
Some Fire tablets support Show Mode, which changes the tablet into a visual Alexa display. Compatibility depends on the tablet generation and its software version; it is not a feature to assume on every Fire tablet. Amazon’s Show Mode compatibility and setup page identifies these compatible models and minimum software versions:
Rank #3
- Fast performance, all-day battery: Up to 15 hours of video playback. Quick performance with 8-core chip and 8GB RAM for smooth streaming, reading, and more. Wi-Fi 6, 8MP rear and front cameras.
- Stunning 2.5K resolution display: Watch, read, and create in sharp detail and vivid color. Smooth scrolling with 90Hz. Dual speakers powered by Dolby Atmos.
- Feels as good as it looks: Thin, light, and durable aluminum unibody design.
- Over a million apps on Google Play: From social media and streaming to fitness, finance, and gaming, find the apps you already love and discover new ones.
- Seamless and personalized: Amazon apps—Prime Video, Kindle, Audible, Amazon Music, Amazon Luna—are built-in and sync across devices with single sign-on and personalized content.
- Fire HD 8 (7th generation): Fire OS 5.6.1.0 or later.
- Fire HD 8 (8th generation): Fire OS 6.3.0.1 or later.
- Fire HD 8 (10th generation): Fire OS 7.3.1.4 or later.
- Fire HD 10 (7th generation): Fire OS 5.5.0.0 or later.
- Fire HD 10 (9th generation): Fire OS 7.3.1.1 or later.
- Fire HD 10 (11th generation): Fire OS 7.3.1.8 or later.
Amazon explicitly excludes Fire 7 (7th, 9th, and 12th generations), Fire HD 8 (12th generation), Fire Max 11 (13th generation), and Fire HD 10 (13th generation) from Show Mode compatibility. If you already own a candidate device, verify its generation and software version against Amazon’s page before relying on it as an Alexa display.
Switch a compatible Fire tablet to Show Mode
Amazon lists three ways to switch modes:
- Use the Show Mode toggle on the tablet’s home screen.
- Switch through the Alexa app.
- Say, “Alexa, switch to Show Mode.”
A compatible tablet may be a useful way to put Alexa visuals on an existing screen, but Show Mode compatibility does not make every Fire tablet equivalent to a dedicated Echo Show or a current Alexa Tablet.
