The safest way to choose an aluminum carry-on is to start with the airline operating your flight, then compare the suitcase’s complete outside height, width and depth—including wheels, handles, wheel housings and other protrusions—with that airline’s published limits. A 22 × 14 × 9-inch case is a useful strict U.S. target, but it is not a universal rule. Check the carrier, cabin, route and aircraft before you buy and again before departure.
Why an aluminum suitcase can fail a carry-on check
“Carry-on” is a marketing category, not a promise that a particular case will fit every aircraft or airline sizer. Airlines set their own maximum dimensions, and the controlling rule can change with the operating carrier, cabin class, fare, route, aircraft and available overhead space. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) states that “carry-on baggage allowances may vary by airline, cabin class, and aircraft type.”
The practical consequence is simple: a suitcase can be sold as an international or cabin-size model and still exceed an airline’s individual height, width or depth limit. A case that fits one carrier’s published allowance may be refused, gate-checked or subject to additional restrictions on another carrier or on a codeshare flight.

Use the operating carrier, not only the airline on your ticket
For a codeshare itinerary, identify the airline that actually flies each segment. Partner airlines can publish different baggage rules. Delta specifically warns that partner-carrier guidelines may differ and that a flight can impose further limits when overhead storage is constrained. If your itinerary has multiple operating carriers, check the allowance for every segment and plan around the most restrictive applicable rule.

Check the exact cabin and route
Open the carrier’s current baggage page for your cabin and itinerary. Basic or restricted fares may have different allowances from standard economy, premium cabins or business class. International and regional aircraft can also use different limits. Save or print the rule you checked because policies and aircraft assignments can change between purchase and departure.
Understand the reference numbers
IATA gives a general reference of 56 × 45 × 25 cm (22 × 18 × 10 in), including wheels and handles. It is guidance, not a universal entitlement. Some airlines also begin applying a weight limit at 5 kg (11 lb).
In the United States, 22 × 14 × 9 in is a common strict benchmark. Delta says, “All carry-on items must meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and may not exceed 22" × 14" × 9",” with handles and wheels included. American Airlines publishes the same 22 × 14 × 9-inch allowance. Treat those figures as carrier-specific rules rather than a worldwide standard.

Read suitcase dimensions the way an airline does
Compare three outside dimensions separately
Record the case’s maximum external height, width and depth. Do not rely on total linear inches alone. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) gives a broad reference of 45 linear inches—the sum of height, width and depth—for most airlines, while directing travelers to check their airline’s current maximum size. A 45-inch total can still fail if one individual dimension exceeds the carrier’s limit.
Include every protrusion
Use dimensions that explicitly include wheels and handles. Include fixed wheel housings, corner guards, latch hardware and any handle that remains outside the shell when retracted. If a manufacturer lists shell dimensions separately from “including wheels and handles,” use the larger complete figure for the airline comparison.
Do not infer size from the name
Labels such as “international carry-on,” “cabin,” or “airline approved” do not establish compliance. The specification must provide numerical exterior measurements. If a product page does not say whether wheels and handles are included, treat the measurement as incomplete and ask the manufacturer for the full outside dimensions.
Leave a practical margin
A case listed exactly at a limit can be difficult to place in a metal sizer if its wheel housing or shell edge projects farther than the published measurement. Where your itinerary allows it, choose a modest dimensional buffer rather than targeting the limit to the last fraction of an inch. The airline’s sizer remains the final test; a buffer is risk reduction, not a guarantee.
Measure a suitcase at home before ordering
Product pages do not always use the same measuring convention, so verify the dimensions yourself when the fit is close. Put the empty case upright on a level floor. Measure from the lowest part of the wheels or wheel housing to the highest fixed point, then measure the widest side-to-side point and the deepest front-to-back point. Keep the telescoping handle fully retracted, but include its housing if it projects beyond the shell. Do not press the case inward or leave an expansion feature open.
- Use a rigid tape measure rather than measuring only the shell panel.
- Measure each dimension at its widest or tallest point, including corner guards, latches and wheels.
- Write the numbers in the airline’s order: height, width, then depth.
- Repeat the measurement after fitting any permanent accessory, such as a luggage tag or external strap.
- Compare your measurements with the carrier’s limit, not with the suitcase name.
If your measurement is larger than the manufacturer’s specification, use the larger number. A small discrepancy can decide whether a rigid case enters a sizer, particularly when the published dimension is already at the airline maximum.

Check empty weight before capacity
Aluminum construction can make an empty suitcase heavy enough to consume most or all of a weight allowance. IATA notes that some airlines start weight limits at 5 kg (11 lb). A case weighing 11 lb empty leaves no payload under an 11 lb limit, regardless of its advertised capacity.
Calculate the usable packing allowance
- Find the airline’s maximum carry-on weight for your exact fare and route.
- Subtract the manufacturer’s empty weight from that limit.
- Pack only up to the remaining amount, allowing for packing cubes, chargers and other accessories.
- Weigh the filled case on a luggage scale before leaving for the airport.
For example, if an airline allows 7 kg and a suitcase weighs 5 kg empty, only 2 kg remains for clothing and electronics. A larger-liter case is not more useful if you cannot legally fill it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAlso account for items carried separately. A laptop, camera bag or personal item may have its own size and weight rule, and moving heavy objects out of the suitcase does not help if the second item is also over its allowance. Weigh the complete combination you intend to take through the gate.
Aluminum carry-on examples against common limits
The following specifications show why the complete dimensions matter. They are manufacturer or airline figures, not a promise of acceptance on every flight.
| Item or rule | Exterior height × width × depth | Empty weight | Stated capacity | What the figures mean |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IATA general reference | 56 × 45 × 25 cm (22 × 18 × 10 in), including wheels and handles | Not applicable | Not applicable | General guidance; allowances vary by airline, cabin and aircraft. |
| FAA general reference | 45 linear inches total | Not applicable | Not applicable | A broad reference; the FAA directs travelers to the operating airline’s individual limits. |
| Delta carry-on limit | 22 × 14 × 9 in, including handles and wheels | Airline limit not stated here | Not applicable | Current Delta allowance cited in its baggage guidance; partner flights may differ. |
| American Airlines carry-on limit | 22 × 14 × 9 in | Airline limit not stated here | Not applicable | Published allowance; verify the rule for the specific itinerary. |
| Zero Halliburton Classic Aluminum 3.0 International Carry-on | 22 × 14 × 9 in exterior | 11 lb | 33 L | Matches the strict 22 × 14 × 9-inch dimensional benchmark; the manufacturer says airline-fit information is for reference and travelers should confirm with the airline. |
| Away Bigger Carry-On Aluminum Edition | 22.7 × 14.5 × 9.6 in, including wheels and handles | Not stated in the cited specification | Not stated in the cited specification | Exceeds a strict 22 × 14 × 9-inch limit in all three dimensions. |
| RIMOWA Original Cabin | 21.7 × 15.8 × 9.1 in | Not stated in the cited specification | Not stated in the cited specification | Within 22 inches in height but over a strict 14-inch width and 9-inch depth limit. |
The examples illustrate two common traps. A case can be only slightly over the limit yet fail on width or depth, and a dimensionally compliant case can still be impractical when its empty weight leaves little packing allowance. The Zero Halliburton example also shows that meeting 22 × 14 × 9 inches does not remove the need to confirm the operating carrier’s policy.
A step-by-step buying method
Step 1: Write down the controlling rule
For each flight, record the operating airline, cabin, route, fare and the published maximum height, width, depth and weight. If the itinerary has different carriers, make a row for each segment and use the tightest requirement when choosing one case.

Step 2: Gather complete product specifications
Copy the manufacturer’s exterior height, width and depth exactly as written. Confirm whether wheels and handles are included, and note whether the dimensions describe the case expanded, compressed or with an external pocket loaded. Record empty weight and stated capacity separately.
Step 3: Test each dimension, not just the sum
Compare height with height, width with width and depth with depth. A case passes this screen only when every dimension is at or below the airline’s corresponding maximum. Then calculate the linear-inch total as a secondary check if the airline uses one.
Step 4: Apply a margin where possible
If the itinerary is strict, select a case that is slightly smaller than the published maximum. Do not rely on compressing an aluminum shell; rigid construction will not shrink when the overhead bin or sizer is tight.

Step 5: Calculate payload
Subtract empty case weight from the airline’s weight limit. If the result is small, choose a lighter case or plan a very limited packing list. Capacity in liters is useful only after dimensions and weight are acceptable.
Step 6: Confirm the airline shortly before travel
Recheck the carrier’s baggage page and your booking. Aircraft swaps, partner operation and constrained overhead storage can change what is accepted at the gate. Arrive prepared for the possibility that staff will use a physical sizer.
How to compare aluminum suitcases beyond size
Once a case passes the airline screen, compare features that affect daily use. Keep the dimensions and empty weight at the top of the worksheet so attractive extras do not obscure a compliance problem.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| External dimensions | Are height, width and depth measured with wheels and handles? | These are the figures a sizer and airline policy address. |
| Empty weight | How much of the airline allowance is consumed before packing? | Heavy cases can leave little legal payload where weight limits apply. |
| Capacity | Is the liter figure stated, and does it depend on an expansion feature? | Capacity is useful only after the case meets size and weight rules. |
| Shell and closure | How are the two halves secured, and does hardware project outside the shell? | Closures can affect usable depth and exposure to sizer edges; the product specification should provide the details. |
| Wheels and handle | Are wheel housings recessed, and is the handle stable when extended? | These parts add outside dimensions and are common sources of measurement differences. |
| Lock type | What locking mechanism is supplied, and how is it reset? | Security features are useful only if they do not add unlisted protrusions or complicate inspection. |
| Warranty and repair | What coverage, exclusions and repair process does the maker publish? | Aluminum cases can be a long-term purchase; support terms may matter more than a small capacity difference. |
| Price | Is the price recurring, promotional or region-specific? | Compare like-for-like specifications and the cost of ownership; no price is established by the airline rules themselves. |
Cost and ownership considerations
Airline compliance should come before price, but price still belongs in the comparison. Aluminum cases often command a premium over simpler luggage, and the relevant figure is the total ownership cost rather than the sticker price alone. Check whether the quoted price includes the lock, interior organizers, shipping, taxes or a replacement warranty. A low introductory price is not directly comparable with a case that includes longer coverage or a published repair program.
Do not pay more for capacity that your itinerary cannot use. If a larger model is over a 14-inch width or 9-inch depth limit, its extra liters may simply increase the chance of a gate check. Conversely, choosing the lightest compliant case can have practical value because every pound saved becomes clothing, equipment or flexibility under a weight cap.
Read warranty exclusions carefully. Ask who pays for shipping, whether wheel or handle damage is covered, and whether the manufacturer provides parts or authorized repairs in your country. These details do not change the airline sizer result, but they affect whether an expensive aluminum case remains economical over several trips.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using the 45-inch total as permission
The FAA’s 45-linear-inch reference does not override an airline’s individual dimensions. A 20 × 16 × 9-inch bag totals 45 inches but is wider than a 14-inch limit.
Measuring only the aluminum shell
Shell-only measurements can omit wheels, corner hardware and handle housings. Compare the largest complete exterior measurement instead.
Assuming “international” means universal
International routes do not share one global carry-on size. IATA’s 22 × 18 × 10-inch reference is broader than the 22 × 14 × 9-inch rule used by Delta and American Airlines.

Ignoring a codeshare
The ticketing airline may not be the operating airline. Check every flight number’s actual operator and follow the stricter applicable allowance.
Focusing on liters before pounds
A 33-liter case that weighs 11 lb empty is a poor choice where the total allowance is 11 lb. Weight and dimensions must be cleared before capacity becomes a deciding factor.
Trusting an old policy screenshot
Airline rules and product specifications can change. Use the carrier’s current baggage page and verify again close to departure.
Assuming an expansion zipper is harmless
An expanded suitcase may have a different depth from the one shown in a compact product photograph. Measure and compare the configuration you will actually use. Do not count on an airline accepting a compressed case if the shell, zipper track or wheel housing still exceeds the limit.

What to do if the case is challenged at the airport
- If it does not fit the sizer: remove any detachable accessory only if the airline permits it; otherwise be prepared for gate-checking or a different baggage charge.
- If the airline measures a protrusion: point to the manufacturer’s complete exterior specification, but understand that staff and the physical sizer control acceptance.
- If weight is the problem: move items to another permitted bag only within that bag’s allowance, or remove items before check-in.
- If a partner carrier is operating: follow that carrier’s published rule for the segment, even when another airline sold the ticket.
Planning for the sizer rather than arguing from a product label is the most reliable way to avoid a last-minute surprise. Keep a small personal-item option available if your fare permits one, but verify that item’s dimensions and weight separately.
FAQ
Will a 22 × 14 × 9-inch aluminum suitcase fit every airline?
No. It is a useful strict U.S. benchmark used by Delta and American Airlines, but IATA’s general reference is 22 × 18 × 10 inches and other carriers can publish different limits. The operating airline, cabin, route and aircraft control.
Do airline dimensions include wheels and handles?
Many published rules do, and Delta expressly includes them. Use the manufacturer’s complete exterior dimensions, including wheels, handles, housings and other fixed protrusions, unless the carrier states a different method.
Is a 45-linear-inch bag automatically legal?
No. The FAA’s 45-linear-inch figure is a broad reference. A bag can total 45 inches and still exceed an airline’s individual width or depth limit.
Why can an aluminum suitcase be a poor choice under a weight limit?
Its empty shell can consume much of the allowance. The Zero Halliburton Classic Aluminum 3.0, for example, lists an 11-pound empty weight. Under an 11-pound total limit, it leaves no legal payload.

What should I do when the product page says “international carry-on”?
Ignore the label until you find numerical exterior height, width and depth measurements that state whether wheels and handles are included. Compare those figures with the operating carrier’s current rule.
Which is more important, capacity or weight?
Dimensions and empty weight come first. Capacity matters only after the case fits every individual size limit and leaves enough payload for your packing list.
Can a partner airline change the result?
Yes. Codeshare and partner flights can have different baggage guidelines, and Delta notes that constrained overhead storage can impose further limits. Check every operating carrier on the itinerary.
Bottom line for choosing your case
Choose the smallest aluminum suitcase that provides enough capacity after it passes the operating airline’s complete height, width, depth and weight requirements. For a strict U.S. benchmark, look for external dimensions no larger than 22 × 14 × 9 inches including wheels and handles, then verify the actual airline and itinerary. Treat IATA’s 22 × 18 × 10-inch reference and the FAA’s 45-linear-inch figure as general guidance, not guarantees. A dimensionally exact case such as the 22 × 14 × 9-inch, 33-liter, 11-pound Zero Halliburton Classic Aluminum 3.0 still requires airline confirmation, while larger models demonstrate why “carry-on” labeling alone is insufficient.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a 22 × 14 × 9-inch aluminum suitcase fit every airline?
No. It is a strict U.S. benchmark used by Delta and American Airlines, not a universal rule. Check the operating carrier, cabin, route and aircraft.
Do carry-on measurements include wheels and handles?
Many airline rules do, and Delta explicitly includes them. Compare complete exterior dimensions, including wheel housings, handles and other protrusions.
Is 45 linear inches an automatic approval?
No. A bag can total 45 inches while exceeding an airline’s separate width or depth limit.
Why check empty weight before capacity?
A heavy aluminum shell can consume most of the allowance. An 11-pound case leaves no payload under an 11-pound total limit.
Does an international carry-on label guarantee compliance?
No. Only numerical exterior measurements, checked against the operating airline’s current rule, establish whether the case is a reasonable fit.
The Bottom Line
Verify the operating airline’s individual height, width, depth and weight limits, then compare complete suitcase dimensions—including wheels and handles—before considering capacity, features or price.
