Choose an air purifier by matching its smoke CADR to the entire room it must clean, then decide whether you also need a substantial activated-carbon stage for gases and odors. HEPA or another pleated mechanical filter is the core choice for traffic particles and PM2.5; it does not, by itself, remove gaseous pollutants. Measure the room, account for ceiling height and open doorways, check noise at the required fan speed, and budget for replacement filters and electricity.
What an air purifier can do about urban pollution
Urban air pollution is a mixture, not one contaminant. Fine particles such as PM2.5, soot and smoke-like aerosols behave differently from nitrogen dioxide, ozone, solvents and other gases. A portable cleaner can reduce the pollutants for which it has an appropriately sized filter, but it cannot make every indoor pollutant disappear.
EPA describes HEPA and other pleated filters as mechanical filters: air passes through the media and particles are trapped. This is the relevant technology for PM2.5 and traffic-related particle pollution. The useful comparison is the machine’s measured smoke CADR and the amount of air it can process, not the word “HEPA” considered in isolation.

Activated carbon and other sorbents can adsorb some odors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but performance depends heavily on the type and quantity of sorbent and on which gases the manufacturer actually targets. EPA notes that CADR is a particle rating; there is no broadly used, equivalent gas-filter performance rating. A purifier with a thin carbon sheet may help with light odors while offering little capacity for a continuing gas source.

Filtration is one layer of an indoor-air plan. EPA states, “No air cleaner or filter will eliminate all of the air pollutants in your home.” Use source control—do not smoke indoors, reduce combustion and solvent sources—and ventilate with clean outdoor air when conditions permit. EPA also states, “Filtration does not replace the need to control pollutants and ventilate.” Read the EPA Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home for the agency’s consumer guidance.
Calculate the room capacity before comparing models
Measure the whole area the unit must serve
Measure the room’s length and width and multiply them. Include connected areas that share an open doorway or open-plan floor; a purifier rated for a closed bedroom will not clean an entire apartment living area at the same rate. EPA’s sizing estimates assume an 8-foot ceiling. For a higher ceiling, choose more capacity because the unit must process a larger volume of air.
Place the purifier where people spend the most time, but size it for the full connected area rather than only the corner around the device. If one available unit cannot meet the target, using multiple units is a practical option: divide the space into zones and make sure each unit’s capacity fits its zone.

CADR means clean air delivery rate. Of the common smoke, dust and pollen ratings, EPA identifies tobacco-smoke CADR as the rating for the smallest particles. For an urban-pollution decision, smoke CADR is therefore the most useful starting number for PM2.5 and similar fine particles.
EPA’s consumer sizing rule is a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. For example, a 300-square-foot room calls for at least 200 cfm under that rule. AHAM says the same two-thirds approach is suitable under normal circumstances, while its wildfire-smoke guidance recommends a smoke CADR that matches the room area when an area is heavily affected by wildfire smoke. Wildfire smoke and everyday city pollution are not identical, so treat the full-area figure as a higher smoke-load target, not as a universal requirement for every pollutant.

| 100 sq ft | 65 cfm | About 67 cfm |
| 200 sq ft | 130 cfm | About 133 cfm |
| 300 sq ft | 195 cfm | 200 cfm |
| 400 sq ft | 260 cfm | About 267 cfm |
| 500 sq ft | 325 cfm | About 333 cfm |
| 600 sq ft | 390 cfm | 400 cfm |
The EPA values are estimates for particle removal based on an 8-foot ceiling, not guarantees for every pollution condition. The chart is published in the agency’s home air-cleaner guide. If your ceiling is higher, your floor plan is open, or pollution loading is unusually high, select a larger unit or combine units.
Understand what the CADR test does—and does not—tell you
CADR is normally measured at the highest fan speed. A model that meets the room target only on “Turbo” may be too loud for continuous use, and running it on a quiet setting can deliver less clean air. Compare the required CADR with the noise specification at the speed you can tolerate, not just with the headline maximum.

Choose the filter technology for the pollutants you face
For PM2.5, soot and smoke-like particles: mechanical filtration
Prioritize a pleated mechanical filter, commonly sold as HEPA, with a smoke CADR sized to your room. A filter label alone does not reveal how much air the complete appliance moves or how quickly it cleans a space. Fan design, filter area and resistance all affect the delivered CADR, so use the tested rating and room guidance together.
For odors and gases: activated carbon or another sorbent
If traffic odors, cooking smells, VOCs or another gaseous concern is important, look for a filter explicitly designed for gases and identify the gases named in the product documentation. Prefer a stage containing a substantial amount of activated carbon or another sorbent rather than a token carbon coating. Because no widely accepted gas CADR exists, do not infer gas performance from a particle CADR or from a HEPA claim.
Carbon also has finite capacity. A filter exposed to a continuing source can become loaded while the fan still runs, so replacement timing and the amount of sorbent matter. If the manufacturer does not state what gases are targeted or how much carbon is present, treat gas-removal claims as unestablished.

Avoid ozone-generating approaches
EPA advises avoiding cleaners that intentionally produce ozone. Some ionizers, electrostatic precipitators, plasma cleaners and UV systems may emit ozone. In its smoke guidance, EPA does not recommend electronic cleaners, photocatalytic oxidation (PCO), hydroxyl generators or devices with UV components for smoke removal because they are not designed to remove particles reliably and may produce ozone or other pollutants. A mechanical purifier with an appropriately sized smoke CADR is the safer baseline for particle pollution.

For a forced-air heating or cooling system, EPA recommends at least MERV 13, or the highest filter rating the system can accommodate. The filter must fit snugly, and the system fan must run for the filtration to operate. Confirm compatibility with the equipment manufacturer or a technician if a higher-resistance filter could restrict airflow. HVAC filtration can complement, but does not automatically replace, a portable unit in the room where occupants spend most of their time.
Compare candidate purifiers on the numbers that matter
| Comparison point | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Smoke CADR | At least the room target; use the entire connected area and adjust upward for high ceilings. | Indicates particle-cleaning capacity for fine, smoke-like particles. |
| Independent verification | AHAM Verifide listing and searchable model information. | AHAM says the mark reflects independent testing for tobacco smoke, pollen and dust and compliance with CARB ozone limits. |
| Gas stage | Type and quantity of carbon or another sorbent, plus the specific gases named. | Particle CADR does not validate gas removal. |
| Noise at useful speed | Sound level when the purifier reaches the required CADR, not only its lowest setting. | CADR is typically measured at maximum speed, which may be too loud for sleep or work. |
| Replacement filter | Correct part number, stated replacement guidance, availability and recurring cost. | A loaded filter restricts performance; no replacement filter is universally compatible. |
| Energy use | Power draw at the settings you expect to use and local electricity rates. | Long runtimes turn a small difference in power into a recurring operating cost. |
| Physical placement | Unit dimensions, weight, clearance around the intake and outlet, and a stable location. | Blocked airflow reduces the air actually processed. |
AHAM’s consumer guidance and directory are available through its portable-room-air-cleaner selection guide. The Verifide mark is a useful check on particle-performance claims, not proof that a device removes every urban gas or pollutant.
A practical buying process
- Define the dominant problem. If your concern is PM2.5, soot or smoke-like traffic particles, start with mechanical filtration and smoke CADR. Add a gas-targeted stage only when odors, VOCs or other gases are part of the problem.
- Map the space. Measure every connected section, calculate the total floor area and note ceiling height. Decide whether doors will normally be open; if they are, include those areas in the capacity calculation.
- Set the CADR floor. Use EPA’s chart as a minimum estimate or calculate at least two-thirds of the room’s square footage as smoke CADR. For heavy smoke conditions, AHAM’s guidance is to match smoke CADR to room area. Increase the target for ceilings above 8 feet or unusually high pollution loads.
- Check the rating’s test condition. Confirm that the figure is the smoke CADR, not only dust or pollen CADR, and find out whether the unit reaches it only at its highest speed.
- Verify the model independently where possible. Search AHAM’s directory for the exact model and room-size information. Treat a directory entry as a performance-claim check, not a guarantee of gas removal.
- Inspect the gas filter honestly. Read the specification for the sorbent type, quantity and named target gases. If those details are missing, buy the device for particle filtration only.
- Price the complete ownership period. Add replacement filters and electricity to the purchase price. Check the exact replacement part number and whether it is routinely available in your region.
- Choose a livable operating setting. Compare noise at the speed that provides your target CADR. A theoretically powerful unit that is switched off or run far below its rated speed may clean less air in practice than a quieter, correctly sized alternative.
- Plan placement. Leave the clearances specified by the manufacturer, keep the intake and outlet away from furniture and curtains, and place the machine in the occupied room rather than a remote hallway.
Operate the purifier for meaningful particle reduction
Higher fan speeds and longer operating times generally filter more air. Use the highest setting that is acceptable for the situation, then maintain enough runtime to keep processing the room’s air. For a smoke episode, EPA’s Indoor Air Filtration guidance advises running a portable cleaner continuously at its highest fan setting and keeping doors and windows closed when it is safe to do so. Closing the room can reduce the rate at which polluted outdoor air enters; do not compromise necessary ventilation or safety.
Keep the purifier’s airflow unobstructed. Do not push it against a wall, place objects over the outlet or hide it behind a sofa. If the device has an automatic mode, check what sensor it uses: a particle sensor may not detect gases, and a quiet automatic setting may not deliver the CADR you need during a pollution event.

- Air Quality Monitoring: This air purifier is designed with a built-in PM2.5 sensor and real-time display, eliminating the need for guesswork about air quality. In auto mode, when it detects a decline in air quality, the purifier with the indicator changing to green, blue, yellow or red, and the fan accelerating to purify the air more efficiently.
- Remarkable Filtration: Featuring an advanced filtration system, the air purifier effectively removes airborne particles (such as dust, pollen, pet dander, and smoke ). When activated, this air cleaner can refresh the atmosphere in a space up to 2400 sq ft / 223 m² every 30 minutes, ensuring you enjoy a fresh and comfortable air quality throughout the day in your home or office. (Note: For significant amounts of pet hair on floors or fabric surfaces, we recommend use other cleaning products.)
- 3-Stage Advanced Filtration: Our air filter combines a high-efficiency purification filter with 3 layers to can effectively filter out the impurities in the air. This high-performance system delivers thorough air purification, creating a healthier living environment for you and your loved one. (Note: The filter needs to be replaced every 3 to 6 months, and must not be cleaned with water or other liquids.)
Run the unit in the room where people spend the most time. Moving it between rooms can be useful when only one area is occupied, but a purifier cleans most effectively while operating continuously in the occupied zone with the doors and airflow arrangement used in normal life.
Maintain filters and budget for the real operating cost
Replace filters according to loading, not a universal calendar
There is no single EPA replacement interval for every portable purifier. Follow the model’s instructions and inspect the filter more often during heavy pollution or wildfire smoke. AHAM notes that heavy-smoke operation may require more frequent replacement. A visibly dirty or odor-producing filter should be checked promptly; EPA’s smoke guidance says to inspect and clean or replace filters when they are dirty or smelling.
A loaded filter can restrict airflow and reduce effective cleaning even while the fan appears to run normally. Keep the exact replacement part available before the installed filter reaches the end of its useful life. Do not assume a filter from another model fits, seals correctly or has the same carbon quantity.
Include electricity and noise in the ownership decision
Particle removal depends on delivered airflow, so choosing a very low fan setting solely to reduce electricity or noise can undermine the reason for buying the purifier. Conversely, a unit that is intolerably loud may not be used. Compare the cost and acoustic impact of the setting you will actually use, and choose a model with enough CADR headroom to clean effectively below its maximum when possible.
Know the limits and set realistic health expectations
No portable cleaner removes every pollutant. A particle purifier cannot substitute for eliminating an indoor source, and a carbon stage cannot be assumed to remove every gas merely because it is present. Outdoor-air ventilation can help when outdoor air is cleaner than indoor air, but opening windows during a pollution event can increase the contaminant load. Use local air-quality conditions and the source of the pollution to decide when ventilation is appropriate.

EPA reports that studies of portable HEPA cleaners have found small improvements in cardiovascular and respiratory health. These effects are not necessarily noticeable to an individual, and they do not justify promises of preventing disease or guaranteeing symptom relief. The defensible goal is lower exposure to the particles the purifier is sized and maintained to remove.

Troubleshoot common selection and use mistakes
The room still smells after buying a HEPA purifier
HEPA targets particles, not all gases. Check whether the smell is gaseous, whether the purifier has a substantial activated-carbon stage and whether the manufacturer identifies that odor’s chemical class as a target. Remove or isolate the source; do not expect a thin carbon layer to absorb an unlimited supply.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The purifier is loud, so it stays on low
Recheck the smoke CADR at the selected speed. If the unit meets the room target only at maximum, it is undersized for quiet operation. A larger-capacity model, or a second unit that lets each machine run at a lower setting, can provide more usable airflow.
Performance falls during a pollution episode
Inspect the filter for loading, confirm that the intake and outlet are clear and verify that doors or windows are not introducing a large additional source. Replace the filter when dirty or smelling and use the manufacturer’s specified part. Heavy smoke can shorten filter life.
The advertised room size seems much larger than the CADR
Use the smoke CADR and your measured area rather than relying on a generic room-size label. Recalculate for the entire open plan and for ceilings higher than 8 feet. If the CADR does not meet the EPA estimate or the two-thirds rule, treat the stated room size cautiously.
Bottom line
For most urban particle pollution, buy a mechanical purifier whose smoke CADR is at least two-thirds of the entire room’s square footage, then increase capacity for high ceilings, open layouts or heavy smoke. Choose a substantial, explicitly specified carbon or other gas-sorbent stage only when gases or odors matter. Verify the exact model where possible, make sure its useful setting is tolerably quiet, keep airflow clear, replace loaded filters and treat filtration as a supplement to source control and appropriate ventilation.
