Choose an air purifier by the pollutant you need to control, the entire area it must serve, and its tested clean air delivery rate (CADR). For wildfire smoke and other fine particles, compare the tobacco-smoke CADR and target at least two-thirds of the room’s floor area in square feet. Check dust CADR when household dust matters. If pollution includes odors or gases, choose a unit with a substantial activated-carbon or other gas-targeted filter because particle CADR does not measure gas removal. Prefer mechanical filtration, avoid ozone-generating features, and verify replacement-filter availability before buying.
Start with the pollutant, not the marketing label
“Pollution” can mean very different contaminants. Smoke, fine particulate matter (PM2.5), visible dust and pollen are particles. Cooking smells, solvents and some combustion pollutants are gases or vapors. A purifier that is excellent at particles is not automatically effective against gases.
For wildfire smoke and fine particles
Use the tobacco-smoke CADR as your primary comparison. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) uses tobacco smoke, dust and pollen CADR as examples representing small, medium and larger particles. Tobacco-smoke CADR is therefore the most relevant of the three for fine smoke particles. EPA explains that a higher CADR means more particles filtered and a larger service area, and that the rating is generally measured at the highest fan setting. EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home
For household dust
Compare the dust CADR in addition to smoke CADR. Dust is not one uniform particle size, so a unit’s dust rating can provide useful information that a smoke-only comparison misses. If smoke is your urgent concern, do not substitute a high dust rating for a suitable tobacco-smoke CADR.

For odors and gases
Look for a substantial activated-carbon or another adsorbent filter. Mechanical particle filters capture particles; they do not automatically remove gases and odors. EPA notes that portable-device gas-removal performance has no widely used rating system, so do not treat a particle CADR or a “HEPA” label as proof of gas removal. A thin carbon sheet may offer little capacity compared with a filter containing a large amount of carbon. EPA’s guide explains the distinction between particle and gas filtration.
Calculate the area the purifier must serve
Measure the length and width of every space that will share the cleaner’s air. Multiply each room’s dimensions, then add the rooms only when air can move freely between them and the purifier is intended to serve the combined space. For an open-plan kitchen, living room and dining area, size for the whole connected floor area rather than selecting a model based on one corner of the room.

| 400 square feet | 260 cfm |
| 500 square feet | 325 cfm |
| 600 square feet | 390 cfm |
These are estimates, not a guarantee of a particular indoor concentration. The figures assume an eight-foot ceiling and are intended as a general sizing guide. The cleaner’s published CADR is typically obtained at its highest setting, so a room-size claim may not describe performance at a quiet or low setting.
Apply the wildfire-smoke rule
For wildfire smoke, EPA advises a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. For a 120-square-foot room, that works out to at least 80 tobacco-smoke CADR. This is a minimum starting point; frequent heavy smoke, poor air sealing or a high ceiling can justify choosing a larger unit. EPA’s smoke-and-heat preparation guidance

Adjust for ceiling height and layout
- Ceilings higher than eight feet contain more air than the estimate assumes. Favor a higher CADR or use more than one cleaner.
- Open doors, stairwells and large connected spaces increase the volume to be treated. Size for the full connected area.
- A purifier cannot clean air it cannot circulate. Position it where its intake and outlet are not blocked by walls, curtains or furniture.
- If you need a bedroom protected during smoke events, size that room independently even if a larger unit runs elsewhere in the home.
Understand what CADR does—and does not—tell you
CADR is a particle-removal and room-sizing measure. It combines how much air a cleaner processes with how effectively it removes the test particles. Higher CADR means more particle removal and a larger service area. It does not rate gas capture, odor capacity, noise, energy use or filter life.
Compare the same CADR category when comparing products: use tobacco-smoke CADR for fine smoke, dust CADR for dust and pollen CADR when pollen is a major concern. A single headline “CADR” number can conceal which particle test produced it, so read the individual ratings.

Choose filtration that matches the problem
Mechanical particle filtration
A high-efficiency mechanical filter is the core technology for smoke, PM2.5 and dust. It works by passing air through a fibrous filter rather than intentionally adding a reactive substance to the room. More filter area can permit useful airflow with less resistance, but the only reliable way to compare cleaning performance is the published CADR for the relevant particle category.
Activated carbon for gases and odors
Carbon and other adsorbents can capture some gases and odor compounds. Their performance depends on the type and amount of material, airflow, humidity and the specific gas. Because there is no broadly adopted portable gas-CADR system, evaluate the carbon filter’s physical size and replacement instructions rather than relying on a particle rating. Do not assume that carbon removes every gas or that it will remain effective indefinitely.
Combination filters
A unit can combine a particle filter with carbon. Treat the two functions separately when comparing it: confirm an adequate tobacco-smoke or dust CADR for particles, then inspect whether the carbon stage is substantial enough for your odor or gas concern. A carbon layer does not compensate for an undersized particle CADR.

Avoid ozone-producing and unsuitable technologies
EPA recommends cleaners that produce little or no ozone for wildfire smoke and points consumers to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) certification list when checking device status. Avoid products that intentionally generate ozone. EPA also does not recommend relying on photocatalytic oxidation, hydroxyl generators or UV components for smoke removal: these features are not designed to remove smoke particles and may create harmful pollutants. EPA’s indoor-air-filtration guidance, updated July 28, 2026
Ionization claims deserve the same caution when the process intentionally produces ozone or when the product does not clearly document low-ozone operation. A fan and mechanical filter provide a direct particle-removal path; an extra technology feature should not distract from CADR, filter area and replacement cost.
Decide between a room purifier and central HVAC filtration
Portable room unit
A portable cleaner targets the room where it operates. It is useful when you need protection in a bedroom, home office or other occupied space, or when your heating and cooling system does not run continuously. You can move it, but moving it also means the former room is no longer receiving that filtration.
Forced-air HVAC filter
If your home has a compatible forced-air system, EPA advises using at least a MERV 13 filter—or the highest rating the system can handle—and consulting the equipment manufacturer or an HVAC technician when compatibility is uncertain. An HVAC filter only cleans air while the system fan is running. A high-efficiency filter that restricts airflow beyond the system’s design can cause operating problems, so do not force a MERV 13 filter into an incompatible cabinet. EPA’s HVAC filtration recommendations
Central filtration and a portable cleaner can complement each other: the HVAC filter treats air circulated through the whole system, while the room unit provides focused cleaning where people spend time. Set the fan to run as practical during smoke events, subject to the system’s instructions and capability.

Account for noise, runtime and filter ownership
CADR is usually reported at the highest setting, while you may operate the cleaner at a lower, quieter speed. Compare noise at the speed you can tolerate for hours, but do not assume a quiet-mode room-size claim has the same performance as the tested maximum CADR. During heavy smoke, running longer or at a higher speed generally moves and cleans more air.
Check the exact replacement-filter part number, price and availability before purchase. A low purchase price can become expensive if filters are proprietary, difficult to obtain or replaced frequently. Smoke loads can shorten filter life, so inspect the filter and follow the manufacturer’s replacement guidance rather than relying only on a calendar interval. Keep a spare available before the next smoke episode.
Consider a DIY box-fan cleaner for temporary or budget use
A box fan paired with high-efficiency HVAC filters can be an affordable temporary approach. EPA chamber testing shows that the design details matter substantially. The results below are controlled chamber measurements, not a promise of the same CADR in a particular home.
| DIY configuration tested by EPA | Measured smoke CADR |
|---|---|
| One 1-inch MERV 13 filter | 111 ± 1 cfm |
| One 1-inch MERV 13 filter with a cardboard shroud | 156 ± 4 cfm |
| One 4-inch filter with a cardboard shroud | 248 ± 15 cfm |
| Two 1-inch filters with a cardboard shroud | 263 ± 22 cfm |
| Four-filter Corsi-Rosenthal box | 401 ± 31 cfm |
In EPA’s tested configuration, adding a cardboard shroud increased CADR by 40 percent. The study is useful for understanding design choices, but household results vary with fan condition, filter fit, room leakage, placement and construction quality. Keep the fan and filters stable, seal obvious bypass gaps and replace loaded filters. EPA’s DIY air-cleaner research summary

Use this buying process
- Measure the served area. Record each room’s length and width. Add connected open-plan areas and note ceilings above eight feet.
- Set the particle target. For wildfire smoke or PM2.5, use the two-thirds-of-floor-area tobacco-smoke CADR rule as a minimum. For dust, compare dust CADR as well.
- Choose extra capacity when conditions demand it. Select a larger CADR for frequent heavy smoke, high ceilings, leaky rooms or a desire to run at a quieter speed.
- Separate particle and gas needs. If odors or gases matter, require a substantial activated-carbon or other adsorbent stage. Do not count particle CADR as gas performance.
- Screen out risky features. Prefer mechanical filtration and verify little-or-no-ozone operation. Check the current CARB certification list when relevant to your location.
- Verify usable operation. Read noise levels at more than one speed, confirm the intake and outlet can be placed clear of obstructions and check controls for continuous operation.
- Price the ownership plan. Confirm compatible replacement-filter availability, cost and expected replacement conditions, including the possibility of faster loading during smoke events.
- Check HVAC compatibility. If you plan to use a MERV 13-or-higher central filter, confirm the system supports it with the manufacturer or a qualified technician.
Set up and operate the purifier effectively
Placement
- Place the unit in the room you want to protect, with clearance around the intake and outlet specified by its instructions.
- Keep doors and windows closed during outdoor smoke episodes when practical; filtration cannot compensate for a continuously open path to smoky outdoor air.
- For a bedroom, run the cleaner before sleep and continue operation at a tolerable speed while occupied.
During a smoke event
- Use a higher setting when smoke is heavy or when the room has just been contaminated, then reduce speed only if the resulting noise is necessary for continued use.
- Watch for a rapidly darkening or loaded filter and replace it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Do not rely on a purifier to eliminate every pollutant. EPA states that no air cleaner or filter removes all air pollutants from a home. EPA’s consumer guide
Common selection mistakes and fixes
Choosing by advertised room size alone
Room-size labels may be based on a particular CADR, ceiling height and maximum fan setting. Fix the problem by finding the tobacco-smoke CADR, calculating your actual area and adjusting for ceiling height and open-plan volume.

Assuming HEPA means gas or odor removal
HEPA or another particle filter addresses particles. Add a substantial carbon or other gas-targeted stage when gases or odors are part of the problem, and recognize that portable gas performance is not standardized.
Buying an ozone-producing “air cleaner” for smoke
Ozone is not a substitute for particle filtration. Choose little-or-no-ozone mechanical filtration and check CARB certification rather than selecting a device because it advertises ionization, UV, hydroxyl generation or photocatalytic oxidation.
Installing a restrictive HVAC filter without checking the system
MERV 13 is a recommendation for compatible forced-air systems, not a universal fit. Confirm the highest rating your equipment can handle before installation.
Ignoring replacement filters
A cleaner that cannot be kept supplied with compatible filters will not deliver its rated performance for long. Check availability and cost before buying, and expect smoke exposure to increase replacement frequency.
Expecting a DIY test result in every home
EPA’s DIY CADR numbers come from chamber tests. Use them to compare designs, not as a guaranteed result for your room. Construction, sealing, fan condition and placement all affect actual performance.
Bottom line
For smoke, buy to the room’s real air volume and compare tobacco-smoke CADR; use at least two-thirds of the floor area in square feet as the wildfire-smoke starting point. Add dust CADR for household dust, add substantial activated carbon only when gases or odors matter, avoid ozone-producing technologies, and treat filter replacement, noise and HVAC compatibility as part of the specification rather than afterthoughts.
