For a Delhi bedroom, buy a powered-fan purifier with a genuine HEPA (or equivalent fine-particle) filter, a meaningful activated-carbon stage and a CADR matched to the room volume—not merely the box’s maximum-area claim. Measure the room, allow roughly 20% coverage headroom, and choose a model you can run at a tolerable speed with replacement filters available locally. A 200-square-foot room with an 8-foot ceiling needs about 136 m³/h to turn over its air every 20 minutes and about 227 m³/h for a 12-minute turnover; a higher-capacity unit gives useful margin during Delhi’s winter pollution peaks.
Delhi decisions should address both PM2.5 and PM10. The Central Pollution Control Board’s NCR AQI service reports pollutant readings from monitoring locations, so the number can vary substantially by neighbourhood and by hour. Use AQI as a reason to adjust operation and ventilation, not as a substitute for sizing the purifier correctly.
What a Delhi purifier must remove
Delhi and the wider NCR experience particle pollution from traffic, construction, road dust, industry, heating and regional smoke. PM10 consists of larger inhalable particles; PM2.5 is much finer and is the particle fraction that most strongly drives the case for a high-efficiency filter. A purifier that moves a lot of air through an ordinary dust screen may still perform poorly against PM2.5.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck the CPCB NCR AQI reading for the monitoring location nearest your home, and remember that it is a location-based average rather than a measurement inside your bedroom. Indoor concentrations also depend on open windows, infiltration through gaps, cooking, incense, candles, cleaning and the number of people in the room. A correctly sized purifier lowers airborne particles; it does not remove the source of pollution or make an unsafe outdoor environment safe for unlimited ventilation.

Particles and gases require different media
- HEPA or an equivalent fine-particle filter: targets airborne PM2.5, PM10, dust, pollen and similar particles.
- Activated carbon: adsorbs gases and odours, including some volatile organic compounds and smoke-related smells. A thicker or larger carbon bed generally has more capacity than a thin carbon-coated sheet.
- Pre-filter: catches hair and larger dust before they load the fine filter. It can extend the useful life of the main filter when cleaned as the manual specifies.
HEPA is therefore necessary for Delhi particle pollution but not a complete gas-and-odour solution. Conversely, a large carbon layer does not replace a high-efficiency particle filter.
Size the purifier by room volume and CADR
CADR (clean air delivery rate) is the primary performance number for a portable purifier. It describes the volume of cleaned air delivered per unit of time. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency summarizes the practical meaning this way: “The higher the CADR, the more particles the air cleaner will remove and the larger the area it can serve.” Compare CADR measured under the same test condition whenever possible; do not compare a marketing area claim from one model with a CADR from another as if they were equivalent.
Step 1: Measure the actual space
- For a closed bedroom, measure length and width and multiply them to obtain floor area.
- Measure ceiling height. A room with a ceiling above about 8 feet contains more air than the same floor area with a standard ceiling and needs more cleaned-air delivery.
- For an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, add the connected floor areas. The purifier has to serve the whole air volume unless doors can reliably isolate a smaller zone.
- If one portable unit cannot provide enough CADR, use multiple units placed so their intakes and outlets are not blocked. EPA guidance recognises multiple units as appropriate when one model cannot cover the area.
Step 2: Convert the room into a useful CADR target
Air changes per hour (ACH) makes the calculation transparent:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Required CADR (m³/h) = room volume (m³) × desired ACH
A 200-square-foot room is about 18.6 m². With an 8-foot (about 2.44 m) ceiling, its volume is roughly 45 m³. Cleaning that volume every 20 minutes is approximately 3 ACH, or about 136 m³/h. Cleaning it every 12 minutes is approximately 5 ACH, or about 227 m³/h. These are planning calculations, not a guarantee of a particular model’s result; leakage, doors opening and the purifier’s speed all change the outcome.

The Consumer Education and Research Society buying guide recommends choosing about 20% more rated coverage than the room. For a 200-square-foot bedroom, look for a published coverage figure of at least about 240 square feet, then check that the CADR is comfortably above the calculated requirement. Extra capacity lets you clean faster or operate below maximum speed, which is useful when noise matters.
Use manufacturer area claims as a ceiling, not a promise
Manufacturers calculate recommended room size under specified assumptions. A claim that a purifier covers a large area does not tell you how quickly it will reduce PM2.5 in a leaky Delhi apartment, nor whether the figure assumes the highest fan speed. EPA advises choosing a portable air cleaner intended for the room in which it will be used. Treat the stated area as the largest sensible application, and keep the 20% headroom rather than buying exactly to the boundary.
A published comparison point
Philips India lists the Philips S2000 with a 344 m³/h CADR and a recommended room size of 79 m². The same specification lists HEPA plus carbon filtration, PM and gas sensing, and a 12-month filter-life indicator. Those are manufacturer specifications for that product page; confirm the exact model suffix, regional version and current documentation before purchase.
Philips’ buying-guide example uses a 420-square-foot room and recommends a CADR of at least two-thirds of the room figure, or 280 m³/h. Use that as an example of the brand’s sizing method, not as a universal industry rule. The ACH calculation above is more useful when ceiling height or room shape differs.
Choose the filter stack for Delhi conditions
Genuine HEPA for PM2.5
Look for the term HEPA or a clearly specified equivalent fine-particle standard, and read the technical sheet rather than relying on phrases such as “HEPA-type” or “high-density filter.” EPA recommends a HEPA-designated unit or a high smoke CADR when the goal is removal of the smallest particles. The filter must be installed in a sealed airflow path; gaps around a loose cartridge can allow bypass.

Activated carbon for smoke and odours
Carbon is useful for cooking smells, traffic odours and some gaseous pollutants. Ask how much carbon is present and where it sits in the airflow. A substantial granular or thick carbon stage has more adsorption capacity than a very thin impregnated fabric. Carbon saturates; a purifier can continue to show a clean particle reading while its odour performance has declined. Replace the combined cartridge on the schedule in the manual or when the manufacturer’s indicator calls for it.

A washable or vacuum-cleanable pre-filter reduces the dust load on the HEPA media. Follow the model’s instructions: some pre-filters may be vacuumed but not washed, and a damp component must be completely dry before reinstallation. Never operate with a missing main filter, an open access panel or a damaged gasket.
Avoid ozone-generating designs
Do not select a purifier because it advertises ozone, ionisation or an “active oxygen” effect. The CERC guide specifically advises people with low immunity, asthma or who are on dialysis to choose true HEPA with a pre-filter and avoid ozone-based purifiers. Ozone is itself an irritant and is not a substitute for particle filtration.
A powered-fan HEPA cleaner is the safer default for occupied rooms. CDC/NIOSH identifies in-room HEPA units with powered fans as a preferred auxiliary air-cleaning option in higher-risk settings. If a model includes an ioniser that can be disabled, leave it off unless independent emissions information and a specific reason justify using it.
Compare models after the core checks
Once a model clears the CADR, coverage, filter and ozone screens, compare the ownership details that determine whether you will actually run it.

| Check | What to verify | Why it matters in Delhi |
|---|---|---|
| CADR | Value in m³/h and the test condition used | Determines cleaned-air delivery and recovery after a pollution spike |
| Room rating | Published area, with ceiling-height assumptions if supplied | Prevents buying to an optimistic maximum claim |
| Particle filter | Genuine HEPA or a documented equivalent | Targets PM2.5 and PM10 |
| Carbon stage | Construction and quantity of absorbent material | Determines useful performance against gases and odours |
| Noise | Sound level at the speed you can tolerate overnight | A quiet low setting may clean too slowly; a loud maximum setting may be left off |
| Power draw | Consumption at low, medium and high speeds when published | Helps estimate recurring electricity cost |
| Sensors and controls | PM or gas sensing, automatic mode, display and manual override | Useful for response, but a sensor does not increase CADR |
| Filter supply | Replacement cartridge price, stock and delivery to your Delhi address | A purifier is ineffective if you cannot obtain its filter |
| Warranty and service | Duration, covered components and authorised service locations | Reduces downtime if the fan, sensor or power supply fails |
| Ozone information | Whether ionisation can be disabled and whether emissions are documented | Avoids adding an irritant indoors |
Do not rank models on Wi-Fi, app design or decorative displays before these fundamentals. A reliable manual speed control is often more valuable than an extra smart feature when outdoor pollution changes quickly.
Understand filter life and total ownership cost
There is no single Delhi-wide replacement-filter price. It varies by model, cartridge design, seller, import status and how dusty the home is. Before buying, locate the exact replacement part number and obtain a current local price from the manufacturer or an authorised retailer. Check that the listing is for the same model suffix; similar names can use different cartridges.
Calculate an annual filter budget
- Record the current replacement-cartridge price, including delivery.
- Read the stated service interval and identify whether it is a timer estimate, a sensor-based estimate or a test-condition claim.
- Multiply the price by the expected number of replacements per year.
- Add electricity at the speed and hours you realistically plan to use.
- Keep a reserve for an earlier change if the pre-filter loads rapidly during dust events or construction.
The Philips S2000 specification lists a 12-month filter-life indicator. That is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee that every Delhi household will receive exactly 12 months: heavy dust, smoke, high fan speed and continuous operation can shorten life. An indicator tells you when the device estimates replacement is due; it does not measure every pollutant that can saturate carbon.
Place and operate the purifier correctly
Placement
- Keep the intake and exhaust clear of curtains, bedsides, cabinets and walls according to the manual’s clearance instructions.
- Do not tuck the unit under a desk or inside a shelf where recirculation will reduce effective airflow.
- Place it in the occupied room, with the outlet able to mix cleaned air through the space rather than blowing directly into an obstruction.
- For bedrooms, position it so the fan noise is acceptable at the speed needed for overnight cleaning.
Daily operation
- Close doors and windows during severe outdoor pollution episodes when practical. This reduces new particle entry, although it does not make a room airtight.
- Run the purifier before the room is occupied when you know outdoor AQI is high, then maintain a speed that keeps particle levels down.
- Use a higher setting after cooking, cleaning, a dust event or a period with windows open.
- Use automatic mode only if the sensor responds sensibly; retain manual control so you can run a known speed when readings lag or the sensor is affected by placement.
- Clean the pre-filter and inspect seals at the intervals specified in the manual. A clogged pre-filter can reduce airflow and increase noise.
Ventilation is a separate decision. Outdoor-air exchange can be desirable for comfort and carbon dioxide control, but opening windows during a high-AQI episode can overwhelm a small purifier. Check the outdoor AQI, indoor comfort and the room’s actual use rather than following a fixed open-window rule.

Asthma, low immunity and dialysis
Prioritise a true HEPA filter, a pre-filter and a powered fan. Avoid ozone-based products and disable optional ionisation. Discuss persistent symptoms with a clinician; a purifier is an exposure-reduction measure, not medical treatment.
Open-plan homes
Calculate the connected floor area and ceiling height. If the required CADR is impractical for one appliance, use two or more units and place them in the occupied zones. Closing an internal door can create a smaller, more effectively treated room during the worst outdoor episodes.
Homes near construction or heavy road dust
Expect faster pre-filter loading. Inspect it more frequently, keep windows closed during active dust work when possible, and budget for earlier main-filter replacement. Do not wash a filter unless the manufacturer explicitly says that component is washable.

Common buying mistakes and their fixes
- Choosing by room-size sticker alone: verify CADR and ceiling assumptions; keep about 20% coverage headroom.
- Assuming HEPA removes odours: add a substantial activated-carbon stage for gases and smoke smells.
- Buying an ioniser for a higher number: select a powered-fan HEPA cleaner and avoid ozone-generating designs.
- Ignoring replacement logistics: confirm cartridge price, stock and service before paying for the purifier.
- Running only the quietest setting: compare its CADR with the room requirement; use a higher speed during spikes or after opening windows.
- Blocking the intake: move the unit away from curtains and furniture so the fan can deliver its rated airflow.
- Trusting a single sensor reading: sensors are useful controls, but they do not replace correct sizing, filter maintenance or awareness that readings are location-specific.
A practical purchase checklist
- Write down the room’s floor area, ceiling height and whether it connects to other rooms.
- Calculate the approximate room volume and a 3–5 ACH CADR range using the formula above.
- Reject models without a genuine HEPA or equivalent fine-particle filter.
- For smoke and odours, verify that the carbon stage is more than a token thin sheet.
- Choose a published room rating at least about 20% above your measured area.
- Screen out ozone-generating designs; disable optional ionisation.
- Compare noise and power at the speed you will actually use.
- Confirm sensor controls, warranty, Delhi service and exact replacement-filter availability.
- Check the manual’s clearance, cleaning and replacement instructions.
- Recheck current price, seller, warranty terms and filter stock immediately before purchase because these change.
For a typical 200-square-foot Delhi bedroom, this process usually points toward a purifier rated for at least roughly 240 square feet and capable of around 136 m³/h or more, with approximately 227 m³/h offering faster turnover. The final choice should be the model whose HEPA construction, carbon quantity, usable noise level and replacement support you can verify—not simply the one with the biggest area number.
