The best choice is a correctly sized, high-efficiency air conditioner that names a lower-global-warming refrigerant on its specification sheet, is certified for that refrigerant, and will be installed and serviced by technicians trained for its safety requirements. For room air conditioners, ENERGY STAR identifies R-32, R-454B and R-290 as lower-global-warming options. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists a 700-GWP limit for new stationary residential and light-commercial air-conditioning and heat-pump systems, with installation compliance beginning January 1, 2025.

Refrigerant alone does not determine climate impact or comfort. Capacity, efficiency, electricity use, installation quality, leak prevention and end-of-life recovery all matter. Use the process below to evaluate a specific model rather than trusting a vague “green” label.

What makes a refrigerant a lower-global-warming choice?

Global warming potential (GWP) compares a refrigerant’s warming effect with carbon dioxide over a defined period; carbon dioxide is assigned a reference value of 1. A lower number means less climate impact if an equivalent mass escapes, but it does not make leaks harmless. The amount of refrigerant in the equipment, the probability of leakage, electricity consumed during operation and how the charge is recovered at disposal all affect the system’s total footprint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ozone-depletion potential is a separate measure. A refrigerant can have zero ozone-depletion potential and still have a relatively high GWP, so check both properties in the manufacturer’s documentation and the applicable regulatory listing. ENERGY STAR’s room-air-conditioner guidance specifically encourages selecting a model with a lower-GWP refrigerant.

Do not infer the refrigerant from a product family name, an “inverter” label or an efficiency badge. The exact designation must appear on the nameplate, installation manual or specification sheet for the model and capacity you are buying.

Which refrigerants should you consider?

ENERGY STAR identifies R-32, R-454B and R-290 as lower-GWP refrigerants for room air conditioners. EPA’s 2026 table gives published GWP values for two of them and classifies both as A2L refrigerants that are acceptable for residential and light-commercial air-conditioning and heat-pump applications when the listed use conditions are met.

Refrigerant Published GWP Safety classification What to verify
R-32 (HFC-32) 675, EPA 2026 A2L, mildly flammable That the complete system is designed and certified for R-32, with the required charge limits, installation practices and service procedures.
R-454B 470, EPA 2026 A2L, mildly flammable That the equipment, tools, labeling and technician procedures are approved for this blend and its specified use conditions.
R-290 (propane) ENERGY STAR identifies it as lower-GWP; a comparable GWP figure is not stated in the cited material Check the exact model documentation and local rules Availability, allowable charge, room-size restrictions, electrical and fire-code requirements, and trained service support for the particular product.

R-32 and R-454B are not drop-in substitutes. EPA warns that mildly flammable refrigerants must be used only in equipment designed for them; putting one into an older system that was not engineered, labeled and tested for it can create a fire, pressure, control or warranty hazard. A lower published GWP is therefore useful only when the entire appliance and installation comply with the applicable requirements.

Start with the right type and capacity

Choose the equipment category before comparing refrigerants. A window or room unit cools one enclosed area. A through-wall unit serves a dedicated opening. A portable unit can be moved but often has different ducting and efficiency characteristics. A central split system or ducted heat pump serves a whole building, while a ductless mini-split or multi-split serves one or more zones. Refrigerant choices, charge sizes, code requirements and available certifications vary by category and jurisdiction.

Size a room air conditioner

For a room unit, begin with ENERGY STAR’s area-to-Btu guidance for the room’s floor area. Then apply the published adjustments rather than rounding up automatically:

  • Reduce the required capacity by 10% for a heavily shaded room.
  • Increase capacity by 10% for a very sunny room.
  • Add 600 Btu/h for each regular occupant beyond two people.
  • Add 4,000 Btu/h when the unit serves a kitchen.

Use the room’s actual conditions, not the entire home’s floor area. Close doors to unconditioned spaces and account for connected open-plan areas. An oversized unit may reach its thermostat setting quickly but remove less moisture, causing clammy air and short cycling. An undersized unit can run continuously without reaching the target temperature during peak heat.

Size central and ductless systems with a load calculation

For central air, a heat pump or a multi-zone mini-split, ask the contractor for a room-by-room or building load calculation. It should account for orientation, insulation, windows, infiltration, internal heat, duct losses and the design outdoor temperature. Do not select a replacement solely from the old unit’s tonnage; previous equipment may have been oversized or the building may have changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Request the calculated capacity at the relevant outdoor conditions and the manufacturer’s capacity tables for the selected indoor and outdoor units. A matched system can deliver a different capacity and efficiency from the same outdoor unit paired with another coil or air handler.

Verify the refrigerant on the exact model

Before paying a deposit, obtain the manufacturer’s specification sheet and photograph or record the nameplate information. Look for:

  • The refrigerant designation, such as R-32, R-454B or R-290.
  • Factory charge and the maximum permitted additional charge.
  • The model numbers of the indoor and outdoor sections that are approved as a match.
  • Required clearances, room-size limits, ventilation or detection provisions and electrical ratings.
  • Certification marks and the efficiency rating for the exact configuration.

Ask the seller to identify where the refrigerant is printed on the physical unit, not just in an online headline. Retail listings can combine several capacities or production revisions under one page. Keep the specification sheet, invoice and installation record; they make later service and warranty claims easier.

“Eco-friendly,” “next-generation” and “low impact” are not refrigerant designations. If the document does not name the refrigerant, treat the claim as unverified and request the model-specific data before buying.

Understand A2L safety and installer requirements

R-32 and R-454B are A2L: mildly flammable refrigerants with lower flammability than many highly flammable gases, but they still require equipment and procedures designed for that classification. The refrigerant circuit, electrical components, controls, labeling and service connections are engineered together. EPA states that these refrigerants cannot simply be retrofitted into equipment that was not designed for them.

Questions for the installer

  • Has the technician completed training for the selected A2L equipment and refrigerant?
  • Which national, state or local code provisions govern the installation?
  • What are the model’s maximum charge and minimum room-size or installation-area limits?
  • Does the design require leak detection, airflow, ventilation, shutoff controls or specific electrical protection?
  • Which recovery machine, cylinders, scales and leak-testing method will be used for service?
  • Will the warranty remain valid if a different contractor later services the system?

A competent quotation should identify the exact indoor and outdoor models, refrigerant, charge procedure, evacuation and leak test, startup measurements and documentation supplied at handover. Be cautious if a contractor proposes charging an old system with R-32 or R-454B, cannot explain the A2L requirements, or refuses to provide the installation manual.

Check U.S. compliance and future serviceability

EPA’s current technology-transition table sets a 700-GWP limit for new stationary residential and light-commercial air-conditioning and heat-pump systems. The installation compliance date is January 1, 2025, with an exception for specified components manufactured or imported before that date. The rule applies to new equipment in the covered subsector; it does not mean every existing high-GWP system must be removed immediately.

When comparing remaining inventory, ask whether the unit was manufactured or imported before the applicable date and whether its installation is permitted in your location. Keep the serial number and manufacture date. State or local requirements can be stricter, and rules for room units, portable units, chillers and other equipment categories may differ from the stationary residential and light-commercial category described above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Future serviceability depends on more than legal status. Confirm that local technicians can obtain the refrigerant, compatible parts and approved charging equipment for the model. A theoretically compliant unit that no nearby contractor will service can cost more and remain unrepaired longer.

Compare efficiency, capacity and lifetime cost together

After eliminating models with unsuitable refrigerants or capacity, compare certified efficiency. ENERGY STAR certification and DOE/FEMP or CEE-AHRI directory entries can help verify the rating for a specific model combination. Read the test condition and metric shown on the label; a rating from one equipment category is not directly interchangeable with a rating from another.

Cost or performance factor Why it matters What to request
Purchase price Lower upfront cost can hide higher electricity use or a short warranty. Itemized equipment, accessories and tax-inclusive price.
Installation Refrigerant piping, electrical work, brackets, condensate drainage and code upgrades can dominate the project cost. Written scope, permits, startup tests and exclusions.
Efficiency Higher efficiency generally reduces operating electricity for the same cooling delivered. Certified rating for the exact matched system and expected annual use.
Maintenance Dirty filters, coils or fans reduce airflow and efficiency and can increase failure risk. Service intervals, filter dimensions, parts pricing and local support.
Energy price and climate Long cooling seasons and high electricity rates increase the value of efficient equipment. A usage estimate based on your tariff, climate and thermostat schedule.
End-of-life handling Improper release of refrigerant creates environmental harm and may violate federal rules. Who will recover the charge and where the appliance will be sent.

DOE’s cost-effectiveness principle is straightforward: an efficient product is financially worthwhile when lifetime energy savings exceed the additional upfront premium. Ask for a calculation that states assumptions such as annual operating hours, electricity rate, expected service life and any rebate. Treat a payback estimate as a scenario, not a guarantee; weather, thermostat settings, maintenance and future utility rates change the result.

Plan maintenance, leak prevention and disposal

Proper maintenance extends equipment life and reduces the chance of refrigerant loss. Follow the manufacturer’s filter-cleaning schedule, keep outdoor coils clear, maintain required airflow and have the system inspected when performance changes. A rising electric bill, ice on the coil, unusually long run times, hissing, oil residue near a joint or repeated low-charge alarms warrants qualified service rather than a DIY recharge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

EPA Section 608 rules prohibit knowingly venting refrigerant, including HFC substitutes, during maintenance, repair or disposal. A technician should recover the charge with approved equipment, repair and leak-test the system, evacuate it as specified, and record the refrigerant added or removed. Do not release refrigerant from a disposable cylinder, cut lines before recovery or place a charged appliance at the curb.

Before replacement, ask the contractor or recycler to explain the chain of custody for the recovered refrigerant and the appliance. Keep the final service invoice showing recovery and disposal. These records also help identify the refrigerant if a future technician needs to work on the system.

Room units, central systems and mini-splits: what changes?

System type Buying priority Refrigerant and installation checks
Window or room air conditioner Correct Btu range, moisture control, noise, room-unit efficiency and safe electrical connection. Confirm the named refrigerant on the unit label; use ENERGY STAR sizing adjustments and verify that the receptacle and circuit meet the manual.
Through-wall unit Opening dimensions, sleeve compatibility, drainage and service access. Check that the replacement chassis and sleeve are an approved combination and that the refrigerant is stated for that exact model.
Portable unit Duct configuration, condensate management, usable cooling capacity and storage. Read the full specification and local safety requirements; do not assume a portable model follows the same refrigerant rules as a window unit.
Central split air conditioner Load calculation, matched coil and condenser, duct condition, efficiency and installer quality. Require a system designed for the named refrigerant, an A2L-capable installer where applicable, and documented startup measurements.
Ductless mini-split or heat pump Zone design, low-temperature performance where heating is needed, line-set length and condensate routing. Verify every indoor/outdoor combination, charge limits, line-set procedure and local code requirements.

Use this buying checklist

  1. Write down the spaces to be cooled, floor areas, ceiling heights, sun exposure, occupants and whether a kitchen is included.
  2. Choose the equipment type and obtain a capacity recommendation; request a formal load calculation for whole-home systems.
  3. Shortlist models whose specification sheets name R-32, R-454B or R-290, or another refrigerant whose GWP and legal status you can verify.
  4. Record the published GWP, safety classification, factory charge and certification for each exact model.
  5. Confirm the model is permitted under current federal, state and local rules, including the 700-GWP U.S. limit and installation date provisions where they apply.
  6. Compare certified efficiency, expected electricity cost, purchase price, installation scope, warranty, maintenance and local parts availability.
  7. Obtain quotes from installers trained for the selected refrigerant and ask how they will meet A2L or other safety controls.
  8. Require evacuation, leak testing, startup measurements, model and serial numbers, and the refrigerant charge to be recorded at handover.
  9. Agree in writing on filter access, maintenance responsibility and recovery and disposal at the end of the unit’s life.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by the lowest price

A low equipment price can be offset by an oversized capacity, poor installation, high electricity use or unavailable parts. Compare the complete installed scope and a stated lifetime-cost assumption.

Assuming every “natural” or “green” refrigerant is interchangeable

Refrigerants have different pressures, flammability classifications, lubricants, controls and charge limits. Use only the refrigerant printed for the equipment and specified by the manufacturer.

Buying a used unit without documentation

Ask for the nameplate, model and serial number, manufacture date, service history and proof of lawful recovery if it was removed from another building. Without those records, capacity, compliance and future service can be uncertain.

Ignoring humidity

Capacity that is too large for the room may satisfy the thermostat before removing enough moisture. Select the smallest capacity that meets the calculated load and use a dehumidification mode only as the manual permits.

Skipping disposal planning

Refrigerant remains regulated even when an appliance no longer cools. Arrange recovery before demolition, remodeling or recycling and never cut the lines yourself.

How to compare two specific models

Put both models in a side-by-side worksheet and fill every field from the manufacturer’s documents or the installer’s written quote:

Reject a model when a critical cell is “not stated,” especially the refrigerant, matched-system certification, safety controls or legal installation status. A slightly higher purchase price can be sensible when it buys verified efficiency, competent installation and dependable service.

The practical decision

For a room air conditioner, start with the ENERGY STAR area-and-adjustment guidance, then select a certified model whose label explicitly names R-32, R-454B or R-290 and whose capacity is not oversized. For a central, ductless or heat-pump system, insist on a professional load calculation and a matched system engineered for the stated refrigerant. In either case, verify the current regulatory status, use an installer trained for the refrigerant’s safety classification, compare lifetime energy and service costs, and arrange lawful recovery at disposal. That process reduces climate impact without sacrificing comfort, compliance or maintainability.
