Scaling AI is an operating-model problem as much as a model-selection problem. In an opinion article published by TechRadar Pro Perspectives on August 24, 2026, David Villalón argues that organizations must redesign workflows around AI—using code for predictable steps, models suited to each task, and auditable execution traces—rather than simply expanding access to a powerful model. His argument is a useful framework, not proof that a particular architecture will always cut costs.
Why pilot economics can break down in production
A controlled pilot usually covers a limited set of tasks and conditions. In production, Villalón says, workloads can vary in volume and include edge cases that prompt retries or additional handling. Those factors make costs harder to forecast than a pilot may suggest. This is the author’s explanation in his TechRadar Pro Perspectives opinion piece, not a measured finding from a published study.
The article also cites two striking figures: that 80% of enterprises miss AI cost forecasts by more than 25%, and that over 95% of generative AI pilots fail to reach meaningful production. The piece does not identify an originating study, organization, sample, or methodology for either number. They should therefore be treated as unattributed claims in the article, not independently established statistics.
What a workflow-first economic strategy changes
Villalón’s central recommendation is to manage the process in which AI operates, not just the model. Instead of sending an entire task through one opaque generation, an organization can divide the workflow into discrete steps, use ordinary software for suitable deterministic work, and call a model only where interpretation or generation is needed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Separate predictable work from model work
Code-backed steps can handle rules-based operations, routing, and other predictable actions. Models can be reserved for steps that benefit from language understanding or generation. This allocation is intended to avoid spending model capacity on tasks software can perform consistently; the article does not quantify the resulting savings.
Match the model to the step
The author proposes choosing among frontier, open-source, and smaller specialized models according to each task’s cost and performance needs. That is a selection principle, not a vendor comparison or evidence that one model class is universally cheaper or adequate. Organizations still need to establish quality requirements and validate each model against the work it would handle.

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Keep an execution trace
A trace of the workflow’s steps can make it easier to inspect what happened, identify where exceptions or retries arise, and understand how the process used models. Villalón presents auditability as part of the modular design. The article does not specify a logging standard or prescribe a particular implementation.

Use the article’s proposal as a set of decision tests rather than as a guaranteed cost-saving recipe:

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Process control: Can the work be divided into steps with clear inputs, outputs, and decision points?
- Task allocation: Which steps are deterministic enough for code, and which genuinely need a model?
- Model fit: What quality and performance does each model-dependent step require, and can a smaller or specialized option meet that bar?
- Auditability: Can the organization reconstruct the sequence of actions, model calls, and exceptions for a completed task?
- Production costs: Are costs evaluated across changing volumes, edge cases, and retries—not only the clean pilot path?
These tests expose where a pilot may be hiding operational complexity. They do not, by themselves, establish a business case; expected costs and output quality need to be assessed for the organization’s own workload.
Loan processing is an illustration, not a proven case study
Villalón uses loan processing as an example of a workflow that could be broken into separate steps rather than handled as one generation. The article names no deployed system, baseline, or measured savings for that example. It illustrates the proposed design approach; it is not evidence of a documented implementation or result.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
What the argument establishes—and what it does not
The article makes a strategic case: production economics depend on workflow design alongside model choice, and a modular process may offer more control over task allocation, tracing, and cost assumptions. It does not report a controlled comparison showing that this architecture always costs less, nor does it validate its two headline percentages with traceable data. Leaders should treat the framework as a way to structure evaluation, then test it against their own workload and requirements.
