Choose the assistant whose data use is narrow, understandable and controllable—not the one with the broadest privacy slogan. Before you type a prompt or connect a store account, read both the assistant’s privacy notice and the account-permission screen. Check what enters the system, which companies process it, how long copies remain, whether people can review it, whether chats can improve models, and whether you can revoke access and delete records.
Privacy is a data-flow decision, not a single setting
An AI shopping assistant may process substantially more than the sentence you type. A recommendation request can be stored with your chat history, account profile, previous orders, payment-method metadata, connected services, device details, approximate location, uploaded photographs or files, and information returned by the store or merchant.
Those pieces can travel through several systems. The shopping-assistant company may keep a conversation in its own database; a separate model or API provider may process the request; analytics, hosting, fraud-prevention or merchant systems may receive related information. A statement that an API uses “zero retention” therefore does not prove that the assistant itself deletes the conversation.

The comparison checklist to use before choosing
For every candidate, answer the questions in this table from the live privacy notice, settings pages and connection dialog. If a policy uses a broad category such as “information from your device,” look for a more specific list or ask the provider what the category means.
| Comparison axis | What to inspect |
|---|---|
| Data collected | Prompts, complete chat history, profile fields, order history, payment information or payment-method metadata, device and location context, uploaded photos or files, and data from connected services. |
| Purpose and model use | Whether each category is used for service delivery, analytics, personalization, service improvement, model training, safety, advertising or another purpose. Look for separate opt-outs rather than one broad switch. |
| Human and vendor access | Named model, analytics and hosting providers; merchant personnel; human reviewers; and the circumstances in which each can access inputs or outputs. |
| Retention and deletion | Separate the assistant’s own database from model/API processing. Find an actual retention period, deletion triggers, backup treatment and whether disconnecting an account or uninstalling an app removes copies already shared. |
| Permissions and transaction control | What account data the agent receives; whether access is read-only or can place orders; manual approval, revocation and spending-limit options. Never give an agent a password, passkey or verification code. |
| Security and accountability | Access restrictions, encryption or other security descriptions, incident disclosures, a responsible privacy contact, and usable access, correction and deletion channels. |
| Fit and reliability | Whether the product is appropriate for the intended use, has been tested for that use and explains its limitations. Treat recommendations as suggestions and verify product facts, availability, shipping and terms with the seller. |
The Australian Information Commissioner’s checklist asks, “Will your inputs be accessible by the system developer?” That is a question to investigate, not a claim that every developer can see every input. The checklist was written for organizations deploying commercial AI systems, not as consumer legal advice or a certification scheme, but its questions are useful when comparing household shopping tools.
What current provider disclosures show
The following examples illustrate the kinds of disclosures you may encounter. They are provider statements, not independent audits or a ranking of privacy quality. The products also perform different jobs, so their categories are not directly equivalent.

| Assistant or integration | Data and stated uses | Other processors or access | Retention, deletion and controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shop connected-agent integration | The connection screen may show the account holder’s name, email, phone number, shipping and billing addresses, limited payment-method details such as card brand/type and last four digits, purchase-approval details, orders and personalized search results. | After transfer, the connected agent’s own terms and privacy notice govern its handling. | Disconnecting stops the connection but does not delete information already shared. Checkout preparation with prefilled information is described as the default; paying without manually approving each purchase is optional. Access can be revoked and budgets may be set. |
| Google Gemini Apps | Possible categories include prompts and spoken requests, shared files, photos, videos and page content, interaction transcripts and recordings, connected-app and Google-service information, device and system permissions, and location. Google says information can be used to provide, maintain, improve, develop, personalize, customize, measure and protect services. | Some collected data may be reviewed by human reviewers, including trained reviewers from service providers. | The notice’s warnings and settings should be checked before use. It specifically advises against entering confidential information that you would not want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve services, including machine-learning technologies. |
| Walmart’s Sparky shopping assistant | Walmart’s broad privacy notice includes chatbot interactions in communications and describes voice interaction with Sparky. | The notice covers Walmart services broadly; it should not be read as proof that Sparky collects every category listed in the notice. | Access, correction, deletion and opt-outs for targeted advertising or sale/sharing are described subject to a person’s location and applicable exceptions. |
| POWR storefront assistant | Chat messages and session metadata are collected. Shipping details may be handled when a shopper starts checkout through the assistant. | DeepSeek is identified for response generation, PostHog for analytics with stated automated redaction, and Shopify for store and product information. POWR says it does not sell shopper data or use it for advertising. | The help information describes deletion on uninstall and verified deletion requests, but anonymous conversations may not be matchable to an individual’s deletion request. These are provider disclosures, not independent verification. |
| ShopAssist storefront assistant | Using the assistant does not require a name, email address, physical address or payment-card details, although a shopper can volunteer sensitive information in a message. | ShopAssist says customer personal data is not used to train models. It describes an OpenAI API configuration with approved Zero Data Retention and eligible stateless endpoints for response generation, while separately describing Gemini and Cloudflare processing for other tasks. | Prompts and outputs are stored in ShopAssist systems for its stated retention periods. The exact durations and current service terms should be checked in the live policy before relying on these dated vendor claims. |
How to inspect an assistant before entering information
- Identify the legal service. Record the assistant’s name, the merchant or store it operates in, and any model or technology providers named in the interface. A store’s privacy notice may not cover an independent agent that receives your data.
- Open the privacy notice from the assistant interface. Search for sections titled data collected, sources, purposes, sharing, retention, international transfers, human review, automated decision-making and deletion. Note whether the notice is specific to the assistant or applies to a much wider service.
- Make a data inventory. Mark every category the assistant can receive: prompt text, voice, files, order history, profile data, payment metadata, device identifiers, location and connected-app content. Distinguish information required for a feature from information collected automatically.
- Inspect the connection or permission screen. Before selecting
Connect,AlloworContinue, read each scope. Confirm whether access is read-only, which orders or addresses are visible, and whether the agent can prepare or place purchases. - Trace the processors. Find the model/API provider, analytics service, cloud host and merchant systems named in the policy. Read the relevant terms separately when the assistant says a processor has different retention or training rules.
- Find the controls before you need them. Locate conversation deletion, export or access requests, account disconnection, model-improvement opt-outs, advertising controls and a privacy contact. A control that cannot be found while testing may be difficult to use after a dispute.
- Test with low-risk information. Start with a generic product question. Do not upload an identity document, medical record, private photograph, password, passkey, one-time code or full payment-card number merely to see how the assistant responds.
What data does an AI shopping assistant collect?
The answer depends on the product and the features you activate. Common categories include:
- Conversation content: typed prompts, follow-up messages, voice requests, transcripts, recordings and the assistant’s responses.
- Attachments and page context: photographs, files, product pages or other screen content you deliberately share.
- Account and commerce data: name, email, phone number, shipping and billing addresses, order history, purchase approvals, loyalty information and personalized search results.
- Payment-related details: limited metadata such as card brand, card type and last four digits, or information needed to prepare a checkout. Do not assume that “limited” means anonymous.
- Technical and contextual data: device and system permissions, identifiers, approximate location, session metadata, cookies and diagnostic information.
- Connected-service data: content returned by a store account, browser, calendar, email account or another integration when you authorize it.
A broad service notice may list categories collected across an entire company. Walmart’s notice, for example, covers Walmart services broadly, so a listed category should not automatically be attributed to Sparky. Ask which categories apply to the specific assistant and feature you are using.

What happens when you connect a shopping account?
Connecting an account changes the assistant from a general conversational tool into an agent with access to commerce context. In the Shop connected-agent disclosure, the information shown at connection can include contact details, addresses, limited payment-method details, purchase-approval information, orders and personalized search results. The agent’s own policy governs after those details are transferred.
Use the least powerful permission that completes the task. If you only need product discovery, keep the account disconnected. If a connection is necessary, prefer read-only scopes, deny unrelated data categories, and use a separate shopping profile when the service supports one. Never paste credentials into a chat. Authentication should occur in the provider’s normal account-connection flow, without disclosing a password, passkey or verification code to the agent.

Shop says a user can disconnect but information already shared is not removed by that action. Before connecting, determine which company must receive a deletion request and whether copies in backups, logs or the agent’s own systems have a different schedule.
Can shopping chats be used to train or improve models?
“Training” is only one possible use. Policies may separately authorize service delivery, safety monitoring, analytics, personalization, debugging, product improvement, model development or advertising. A model provider may have one setting while the assistant company stores the conversation for its own purposes.
Google’s Gemini Apps notice says some data may be reviewed by human reviewers, including trained reviewers from service providers. Its user guidance states: “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services, including machine-learning technologies.” Treat that as a practical warning: if disclosure to a reviewer would create harm, do not put the information in the chat unless you have verified a setting and policy that prevent the relevant use.

ShopAssist says customer personal data is not used to train models and describes an OpenAI API configuration with approved Zero Data Retention and eligible stateless endpoints. Its policy separately says prompts and outputs are stored in ShopAssist systems for its own stated retention periods and names Gemini and Cloudflare for other processing. The two statements address different layers, so one cannot substitute for the other.

Look for separate controls labelled model improvement, activity history, human review, personalization and advertising. Read what happens to conversations when a control is switched off; some settings stop future use but do not erase existing records.
Retention and deletion: follow every copy
Ask four separate questions: how long the assistant stores the conversation, how long the model/API provider retains a request, when analytics and security logs expire, and what happens to backups or information already sent to a connected agent. “Deleted” may mean hidden from the interface while a provider retains a copy for a stated operational or legal period.
POWR says it collects chat messages and session metadata, can handle shipping details during an assistant-initiated checkout, and describes deletion on uninstall plus verified deletion requests. It also warns that anonymous conversations may not be matchable to an individual deletion request. If deletion matters, identify yourself through the provider’s supported process without supplying more information than necessary, and save the confirmation.
For any service, record the date you disconnect, delete chats or submit a request. Recheck the account later to see whether old conversations, saved addresses or connected-app tokens remain. If a policy does not state a period or a deletion trigger, treat that uncertainty as a privacy cost rather than assuming short retention.

Checkout permissions and financial safeguards
Shopping agents can create a larger consequence than an inaccurate recommendation when they can prepare or place an order. A safer design keeps final approval with you, shows the exact seller, item, quantity, price, taxes, shipping, return terms and delivery address, and lets you cancel before payment.
Shop describes prefilled checkout preparation as the default for connected agents. Paying without manually approving each purchase is optional; permissions can be revoked and budgets can be set. If you enable automatic payment, choose the smallest spending cap and shortest duration that fit the task, and turn the permission off afterward. Do not rely on a conversational confirmation alone when the merchant’s checkout page can show the authoritative total.
- Use a separate, low-limit payment method for experimental agent transactions when appropriate.
- Require approval for substitutions, recurring orders, shipping-address changes and purchases above a defined amount.
- Review confirmation emails and account order history for duplicates or unexpected changes.
- Revoke tokens after the purchase or when you stop using the integration.
Security, rights and accountability
A privacy notice should explain who can access data, how access is restricted, what security measures are used at a meaningful level of detail, and where to report an incident. It should provide practical channels for access, correction and deletion rather than only a general support form.
Walmart’s notice describes access, correction and deletion options, plus opt-outs for targeted advertising or sale/sharing subject to location and applicable exceptions. Those rights are not identical everywhere, so check the terms that apply to your jurisdiction and account.
The OAIC checklist also asks whether an AI product is suitable for its intended use, tested for that use and understandable enough to assess its limitations. Apply that reliability test to shopping: an assistant can misunderstand size, compatibility, ingredients, shipping restrictions or return conditions. Verify those facts with the seller before buying, especially when the assistant summarizes a page or recommends a substitute.

Choose according to the task and the information at stake
Public product discovery
For comparing ordinary products, use an assistant without account linking. Supply only non-sensitive requirements such as dimensions, budget range, compatibility and preferred features. Check the merchant’s page for current price, stock, shipping and returns.
Personalized recommendations
If order history or saved preferences would materially improve results, connect only after reviewing the exact scopes. Disable unrelated services and ask whether the assistant can answer from a selected list instead of your complete history.
Checkout assistance
Use manual approval, a spending limit and a revocable token. Confirm the final order on the merchant’s own checkout page. Avoid automatic purchasing when the policy, retention period or agent identity is unclear.
Sensitive shopping
For health, financial, legal, intimate or highly identifying purchases, keep the account disconnected and avoid names, diagnoses, full addresses and identifying photographs unless the service’s handling is necessary, specific and acceptable to you. A chat box accepting the information is not evidence that it is safe to provide.
Recheck privacy when the service changes
Permissions and policies can change when an assistant adds voice, image uploads, checkout automation, a new model provider or a new connected app. Repeat the review after a major update, when a permission prompt changes, or when the assistant moves from a merchant site to a standalone app.
- Read the new notice and compare its data categories with your original notes.
- Review connected-account scopes and remove integrations you no longer use.
- Check whether model-improvement, human-review or advertising settings were reset.
- Delete old conversations and submit a formal request when the interface does not remove all copies.
- Inspect orders, payment methods and active sessions for changes you did not authorize.
A practical decision rule
Select the assistant only when you can explain, in plain language, what data the shopping task requires, which providers receive it, why each provider uses it, how long records remain, whether people may review them, and how you can revoke access or request deletion. If any necessary answer is missing, keep account linking off and do not submit sensitive information. Use the assistant for low-risk discovery, verify important facts with the seller, and grant checkout authority only with explicit review and a spending boundary.
