The best AI memory system is the one that answers your assistant’s real questions without retaining more data than necessary. Start by separating short-term conversation state from long-term personal context, then compare memory type, retrieval, user controls, deletion, privacy, and operating effort. A built-in assistant feature is usually the simplest choice for an individual; developers need to choose deliberately between framework persistence, a specialized memory service, a graph, a vector store, or a hybrid.
No published result establishes one universal winner. Test candidates with your own preferences, corrections, dated questions, access boundaries, and forget requests before committing.
What an AI memory system actually stores
“Memory” is an overloaded label. A system that keeps a conversation open, one that summarizes an old thread, and one that stores a user’s dietary preference are solving different problems. Treating them as interchangeable causes both poor answers and unnecessary retention.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute| Memory type | Purpose | Typical contents | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conversation or working state | Continue the active thread coherently | Recent messages, tool results, current task status, and checkpoints | It belongs to a thread or run and should not automatically become a permanent profile |
| Summary memory | Preserve continuity while reducing context size | A compressed account of earlier discussion, decisions, and open tasks | A summary can omit details; it is not a complete transcript or authoritative record |
| Fact or profile memory | Carry durable user or account context between sessions | Preferences, goals, decisions, recurring constraints, or account facts | Facts can become stale and need an explicit correction path |
| Relational or graph memory | Represent connected entities and changing relationships | People, projects, dates, products, events, and links between them | More structure brings more ingestion, schema, and deletion work |
| Retrieval corpus | Supply reference material when answering | Documents, policies, notes, or other source content | Reference data is not automatically personal memory and may have different access rules |
LangGraph’s documentation makes the key distinction between short-term, thread-level persistence and long-term storage associated with a user or application across conversations. OpenAI describes its own memory as a high-level summary that may omit information. Mem0’s default flow extracts durable memories instead of retaining a verbatim transcript, while Zep documents a user-level knowledge graph. Those differences matter more than a product’s use of the phrase “long-term memory.”

Decide what the assistant must remember
Write the questions your assistant must answer before choosing a database or service. A personal assistant may need to recall a stable preference, while a support bot may need the latest policy for a particular account. Those are different retention and retrieval requirements.
- List the expected questions. Include a stable-preference question (“Which travel seat do I prefer?”), a correction (“I no longer follow that diet”), a temporal question (“When did the project deadline change?”), and a relationship question (“Which decision was made for the mobile rollout?”).
- Assign a scope to each answer. Mark information as thread-only, user-specific, application-wide, project-specific, or shared with a team. Never rely on a prompt alone to enforce these boundaries; the store and retrieval query need an identifier and an authorization check.
- Set a retention rule. Decide what expires, what remains until the user removes it, and what must never be stored. Secrets, raw credentials, and unredacted sensitive data should not enter a general-purpose memory store.
- Define correction and deletion. A user must be able to replace a stale fact, remove a single memory, remove a conversation, and understand whether copies remain in summaries, vector indexes, graphs, backups, or logs.
- Choose the minimum representation. Keep exact text only when wording, evidence, or auditability requires it. Otherwise, an extracted fact or bounded summary may reduce exposure and retrieval noise.
Comparison axes that reveal the real differences
Compare named candidates on the same questions rather than accepting a broad “memory” feature label.
| Axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Memory unit | Does it retain raw messages, summaries, extracted facts, entity relationships, or a combination? Can exact source text be preserved when needed? |
| Horizon and scope | Is state limited to one thread, attached to one user across sessions, shared by a project, or available to a group? How are boundaries enforced? |
| Retrieval | Does selection use recency, semantic similarity, exact terms, entity links, temporal signals, or a hybrid? Can you inspect why a memory was returned? |
| Updating and forgetting | Can a user correct a value, explicitly update or delete a fact, remove a conversation, and verify propagation to other stores and logs? |
| User control | Can people view, correct, suppress, or disable memories? Do those controls differ by plan, platform, region, or workspace? |
| Privacy and governance | What enters the system, how long is it retained, who administers access, and what are the training and retention rules for the actual account? |
| Prompt security | Is retrieved text treated as untrusted data rather than promoted into system or developer instructions? |
| Operations | Who runs the database, embeddings, graph, migrations, backups, monitoring, and deletion jobs? Is it managed or self-hosted? |
| Evaluation | Can you test recall, correction, temporal reasoning, multi-hop questions, isolation, and deletion on representative data? |
For a personal assistant: start with built-in memory controls
For a nontechnical user, a native memory feature is usually the least disruptive starting point because storage, retrieval, and model integration are already connected. The trade-off is reduced control over the internal representation and behavior.
What ChatGPT’s memory example illustrates
OpenAI says ChatGPT Memory can use relevant preferences and details from chats and other available sources. Depending on plan and region, those sources may include past chats, saved memories, custom instructions, Library files, or connected-app content. It does not retain every detail, and what is considered relevant can change. The exact controls vary by plan, platform, region, and workspace, so the settings visible in one account are not proof that another account has the same options.
Inspecting, correcting, and deleting
Where the controls are available, a user may review sources, correct information, delete a saved memory, or turn memory off. Deleting a chat alone does not necessarily remove a separately saved memory. OpenAI’s Help Center says removal may require deleting both the saved memory and the originating chat, as well as clearing another source where the same information remains.

Deletion is not always instantaneous. OpenAI says updates can take time and that deleted-memory logs may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. Turning off “Reference chat history” schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion within 30 days; original chats remain unless you delete them separately. Use these details when designing a real deletion policy rather than promising immediate erasure from every system.
Personal accounts and workspaces are different
For personal accounts, OpenAI says chats and remembered information may be used to improve models when “Improve the model for everyone” is enabled. It says content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces is not used to train models by default. The same guidance says improved memory is disabled by default in ChatGPT for Healthcare and ChatGPT Enterprise with Regulated Workspace, and that this feature is not covered under the BAA. Regulated users should follow the current workspace guidance and contractual terms instead of inferring compliance from a toggle.

For developers: choose an architecture, not just a product
Framework-native persistence with LangGraph
LangGraph separates short-term thread persistence from long-term stores for user-specific or application-level data. An in-memory checkpointer is useful for examples; the documentation recommends a database-backed checkpointer in production and shows a Postgres approach. Its long-term store can support semantic search.
This pattern gives the application team control over the state shape, authorization, retention, and provider choices. It also makes the team responsible for migrations, backups, monitoring, access scoping, and deletion propagation. LangGraph’s documentation covers summarizing, trimming, deleting messages and checkpoints, and database setup; those are implementation responsibilities, not optional polish for later.
Specialized memory APIs with Mem0
Mem0 documents a two-part flow: add useful interactions so the system extracts and stores durable facts, then search before the next model call and place useful results in the prompt. Its default is extracted memory rather than a verbatim conversation transcript. Documented retrieval signals include semantic similarity, keyword matching, entity overlap, and temporal scoring. The described storage components include SQL facts and metadata, vector embeddings, and entity storage; managed Platform behavior and operator-configured open-source retrieval are distinct deployment choices.

Mem0 says extraction is additive when a fact changes and recommends explicit update or delete operations for a correction or removal. Scope searches with identifiers such as user, agent, or run. Do not store secrets, raw credentials, or unredacted sensitive data merely because the API accepts text.
Graph-oriented memory with Zep
Zep’s v2 Memory API accepts session messages and builds user-level knowledge-graph memory. Its high-level memory.get method uses the latest session messages to select relevant context while allowing facts derived from earlier sessions for that user; the graph API provides more control over search and context construction.
Zep documents a useful ingestion choice: assistant messages can be excluded from graph ingestion while still being supplied as context for understanding short user replies. This can reduce the risk of turning the assistant’s own guesses into user facts.
Graph retrieval does not remove prompt-injection risk. Zep warns that retrieved text may contain end-user, document, tool, or other external content. Pass it to the model as untrusted data, keep it out of privileged instruction channels, and test whether malicious text can override your system policy. The cited documentation is for Zep v2; confirm the current API version before implementation.
Vector database, knowledge graph, or hybrid?
A vector index is not automatically a memory system. It is one retrieval mechanism, and its strengths differ from a graph’s.

| Approach | Best fit | Weakness to test |
|---|---|---|
| Vector similarity | Finding semantically related notes, preferences, or passages when wording varies | May return an older or merely similar fact when the question requires exact identity, time, or authority |
| Keyword or exact match | Names, identifiers, policy terms, and queries where wording matters | Misses paraphrases and implicit relationships |
| Knowledge graph | Entity relationships, multi-hop questions, and facts that change over time | Requires entity extraction, relationship handling, and careful updates and deletion |
| Hybrid retrieval | Assistants that need semantic recall plus exact, entity, or temporal constraints | More components, ranking logic, observability, and failure modes to operate |
Choose based on the questions, not fashion. Ask a candidate to retrieve a preference despite changed wording, select the current value after a correction, answer a dated question, follow two linked entities, and avoid another user’s project. A graph may help with relationships, but its documentation does not prove higher accuracy for every workload.
Design retrieval so memory helps instead of distracts
Use multiple signals deliberately
Recency is useful for a changing preference; semantic similarity helps with paraphrases; keyword matching protects exact identifiers; entity overlap connects names and objects; temporal scoring handles “before,” “after,” and “current” questions. A hybrid ranker should expose which signals selected a memory so an engineer can diagnose a wrong answer.
Separate retrieval from authority
Retrieved memory is evidence for the model, not a new system instruction. Attach source, timestamp, scope, and confidence where possible. When two facts conflict, define whether the latest explicit user correction, an administrator-approved record, or a source document wins. Do not let an old summary silently override a newer record.
Control the context budget
Store compact facts and bounded summaries when a full transcript is unnecessary. Trim or summarize a long active thread, but retain a pointer to the source when auditability matters. Sending every historical message to every model call increases cost and can make a relevant fact harder to find.
Privacy, deletion, and governance are selection criteria
Ask where each representation exists: primary database, embedding index, graph, cache, logs, backups, and provider-side retention. A “delete memory” button is incomplete if a summary or vector remains searchable. Document the deletion sequence and its expected timing.

- Minimize collection: reject credentials and redact sensitive content before memory extraction.
- Enforce scope in storage and queries: include a user, tenant, project, or run identifier and authorize it server-side.
- Expose provenance: show when a fact was created, changed, and from which source.
- Support corrections: implement replacement as an explicit operation, not only another additive message.
- Test disabling: verify that turning memory off stops new writes and define what happens to existing records.
- Protect prompts: label retrieved text as untrusted and prevent it from entering privileged instruction fields.
- Review contractual settings: personal, business, education, healthcare, and regulated workspaces may have different defaults.
A practical implementation sequence
- Write a memory policy. Define allowed categories, prohibited data, scopes, retention periods, and who can request deletion.
- Model the records. Give each memory an owner, type, source, timestamp, confidence, expiration or review date, and deletion identifier.
- Keep thread state separate. Use a checkpointer for active conversations; do not promote every message to long-term memory.
- Extract selectively. Save a durable fact only when it is useful beyond the current task and sufficiently supported.
- Retrieve before generation. Query with the current user, thread, project, and relevant time range. Apply authorization before inserting results into the prompt.
- Frame context safely. Put memories in a clearly marked, untrusted context section, never in a system or developer instruction slot.
- Implement correction and deletion. Update or remove the canonical record, then propagate the operation to summaries, embeddings, graphs, caches, backups, and logs according to your retention policy.
- Instrument decisions. Record which memories were considered and returned, without logging sensitive content unnecessarily.
Evaluate with a workload-specific test set
Build a small, versioned set of conversations that represents actual use. Include positive and negative cases:
- Recall a stable preference after several unrelated sessions.
- Replace that preference and verify that the old value is not selected.
- Answer “when” and “what changed” questions using timestamps.
- Follow a two-step relationship such as person → project → decision.
- Keep one user’s or tenant’s records out of another user’s answer.
- Honor a request to forget a fact and verify that searches, summaries, and caches no longer return it.
- Ignore malicious instructions embedded in a retrieved note.
- Operate within the intended context and latency budget.
Measure both correct retrieval and harmful retrieval: stale facts, unrelated memories, leakage, unsupported certainty, and failed deletion. Repeat the set whenever prompts, models, extraction rules, schemas, or memory versions change.
How to interpret benchmark claims
A 2025 Mem0 paper reports results on the LOCOMO benchmark, including a 26% relative improvement in its LLM-as-a-Judge metric over the compared OpenAI system. It also reports that Mem0 with graph memory scored about 2% higher overall than its base configuration, 91% lower p95 latency, and more than 90% token-cost savings versus the paper’s full-context method.

Which approach fits common situations?
| Situation | Starting choice | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Individual who wants continuity with minimal setup | A built-in assistant memory feature | Visible memories, correction and deletion controls, plan and region availability, and data-use settings |
| Developer who needs reliable current-thread state | Thread checkpointer with explicit summarization or trimming | Durable production storage, recovery, context limits, and thread isolation |
| Application that carries durable preferences | Scoped long-term store or specialized memory API | Extraction quality, explicit update/delete operations, provenance, and user identifiers |
| Assistant answering entity and timeline questions | Graph or hybrid retrieval | Entity resolution, temporal updates, multi-hop accuracy, and graph deletion |
| Sensitive or regulated workload | The architecture that meets verified contractual and governance requirements | Training defaults, retention, workspace configuration, access logs, deletion propagation, and applicable agreements |
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The assistant repeats an outdated preference | New messages were appended without replacing the old fact | Use an explicit update operation, store timestamps, and rank the latest authoritative correction |
| Relevant facts are missing | Only semantic similarity was used, or the fact was trapped in a summary | Add exact, entity, or temporal retrieval and retain a structured fact for high-value preferences |
| Answers contain another user’s context | Scope was applied in the prompt but not enforced in storage or query filters | Require tenant or user identifiers and authorize every retrieval server-side |
| Deleting a memory changes nothing | Copies remain in chats, summaries, indexes, caches, backups, or logs | Map every copy and run a documented propagation workflow with an observable completion state |
| Retrieved text changes the assistant’s behavior | External content was placed in a privileged instruction channel | Mark it as untrusted context and test injection attempts |
| Operations become fragile | The team selected a database without planning migrations, backups, monitoring, or recovery | Choose managed infrastructure or budget ownership of the complete lifecycle before launch |
Bottom line: choose for the memory job
Use native memory when you are an individual who needs convenient continuity and can accept the controls provided by your plan and workspace. Use thread persistence when the problem is keeping one conversation coherent. Add a scoped fact store when the assistant must remember durable preferences, and evaluate a graph or hybrid when entities and time-dependent relationships dominate. In every case, make inspection, correction, deletion, isolation, and untrusted-content handling part of the acceptance test. The right system is the one that passes those tests on your workload with an operational burden and data policy you can actually maintain.
