Choose an AI chatbot by checking the exact account’s model-improvement rule, chat retention and deletion, human-review exceptions, memory controls, connected-app access, and temporary-chat behavior. These are separate controls: turning off model improvement usually stops some future use for training, but it does not automatically erase existing history or data retained for safety, legal, or service reasons.
This guide compares consumer ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini Apps using the providers’ published policies. There is no universal “most private” winner in these sources; the right choice depends on your account type, settings, integrations, region, and tolerance for retention and review.
What “private” means when you use an AI chatbot
Privacy is not one switch. A chatbot can handle your conversation in several different ways:
- Model improvement: whether prompts, responses, files, or related data may be used to improve or train models.
- Chat history: whether the conversation remains visible in your account and how long it is retained.
- Safety and abuse review: whether automated systems or authorized human reviewers can inspect content, including after you change a training setting.
- Memory and personalization: whether details are saved for use in later chats.
- Connected data: what files, voice recordings, browser context, device information, location, or third-party apps add to the data flow.
- Account governance: whether a personal account, employer-managed workspace, school account, API project, or regional policy controls the data.
Before choosing a service, decide which of these risks matters most. A short retention period is not the same as no human access, and a model-training opt-out is not the same as deletion.

These are policy details, not results from an independent privacy test. Keep the account type and region constant when comparing services; business, education, healthcare, API, and administrator-managed accounts can have different terms.
Step 1: Identify the account and product you are actually using
Privacy promises often change with the account category. Write down the product surface before comparing settings:
- Personal consumer account: the default rules described for ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini Apps generally apply.
- Work or school workspace: an administrator may control retention, integrations, logging, and whether content can be used for improvement.
- API or developer account: API data handling is governed by separate service terms and project settings, not necessarily the consumer chat interface.
- Embedded or mobile experience: an app, browser extension, operating-system assistant, or partner integration may add its own storage and permissions.
- Region: privacy notices, legal obligations, and available controls can differ by country or territory.
For OpenAI, the provider says ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare workspaces, and API inputs and outputs are not used for model improvement by default, subject to organizational choices and the applicable workspace arrangements. Read the agreement for your specific workspace rather than assuming a personal setting carries over.
How to stop ChatGPT from training on your chats
Turn off future model improvement
- Sign in to ChatGPT on the account you use across devices.
- Open Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI says this prevents new conversations from being used to train its models, while regular conversations can still appear in chat history. The setting applies across devices when you are signed in. It is a prospective control, not a command to erase previous chats or copies retained for safety and service operation. Details are in OpenAI’s ChatGPT data-controls documentation.
Use Temporary Chat for a lower-history session
Start a new Temporary Chat when you do not want the conversation in normal history. OpenAI documents that temporary chats do not create or update memories and are not used to improve models while temporary. A copy may nevertheless be kept for up to 30 days for safety.
Temporary does not mean unpersonalized. Existing memories, custom instructions, or plugins may still affect the response unless you turn personalization off when starting the chat. If you save the conversation, it becomes a regular chat governed by normal account settings. Check the separate controls under Settings → Personalization if you do not want existing memory used.

Do not use feedback for sensitive conversations
OpenAI says that submitting thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback can make the entire associated conversation available for model improvement even after you opted out. Avoid sending feedback on a sensitive chat unless you accept that exception.

Understand operational access
OpenAI says consumer content may be shared with service providers that operate the service, and authorized personnel can access some content for limited reasons. Content is stored on OpenAI and service-provider systems in the United States and elsewhere. Its consumer guidance advises against entering information you would not want reviewed or used. Read How OpenAI handles data in consumer services and How data is used to improve model performance before sharing confidential material.
How Claude handles model improvement, Incognito, and feedback
Check the Model Improvement choice
Anthropic’s consumer policy, dated March 16, 2026, says chats and coding sessions may be used to improve models when you choose to allow that use, when you otherwise explicitly opt in, or when a conversation is flagged for safety review. Potentially relevant data can include the conversation, content, custom styles, conversation preferences, and data collected when using Claude for Chrome.
Locate the Model Improvement control in your Claude account privacy settings and read its current wording before using the service. An opt-out addresses the uses described by that control; it does not cancel safety processing or erase data already retained.
Use Incognito for a conversation you do not want used for improvement
Anthropic says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if Model Improvement is enabled. The policy does not state that Incognito removes every operational record, prevents all automated safety checks, or overrides retention required for security or law. Treat Incognito as a narrower model-improvement exclusion, not as an anonymous channel.

Anthropic says a conversation associated with submitted feedback may be stored for up to five years. It may be used to analyze services, research, study user behavior, and train models where allowed by law. Submit feedback only when that retention and use are acceptable.

Data collected while using Claude for Chrome can be included among the information potentially used under the policy. Raw content from connectors is excluded unless you copy it into the conversation; once pasted, it becomes conversation content. Review browser-extension permissions and connector scopes separately.
Account for safety-classifier exceptions
Anthropic’s May 22, 2026 help guidance says conversations flagged by safety classifiers may still be used to improve internal trust-and-safety models, detect harmful content, enforce policies, or support safety research. The guidance specifically advises caution with financial information, health records, passwords, and confidential documents. How Gemini Apps stores, reviews, and deletes activity
Know what Gemini can collect
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice, last updated June 29, 2026, describes collection of prompts; uploaded or shared files and media; Gemini Live transcripts and recordings; feedback; generated content; device information; connected-app information; and some location or app/device context. Google says this data can be used to provide, maintain, improve, develop, personalize, customize, and measure its services.

A voice conversation, an uploaded document, or an enabled app connection can create additional records and permissions. Review each feature before turning it on.
Choose an auto-delete period
Gemini Apps Activity auto-delete defaults to 18 months. Google offers 3-month, 36-month, and indefinite settings, and you can manually delete chats. Select the shortest period compatible with your workflow, then check whether other Google products retain related activity under their own controls.
Understand the human-review exception
Google says some Gemini data is reviewed by trained human reviewers or service-provider reviewers. Chats reviewed by human reviewers, and related information, are not deleted when you delete Gemini Apps Activity and may be retained for up to three years. Therefore, deleting activity cannot guarantee that a reviewed conversation disappears from every system.

Separate Google and third-party settings
Changing Gemini settings does not change settings for other Google services. Connected third-party apps have their own privacy policies, and Google says it does not monitor or secure the data those apps handle. Disable unused connections and read the third party’s terms before allowing an app to send or receive Gemini data.

Why training opt-out, deletion, and human review are different
Use this sequence when a provider says your data will not be used for model improvement:
- Training or improvement: asks whether data may influence future model development.
- History: asks whether you can still open the chat in your account.
- Retention: asks how long copies may remain in backups, logs, safety systems, or reviewer queues.
- Access: asks whether automated systems, employees, contractors, or service providers can inspect content.
- Deletion: asks which copies are removed, on what schedule, and which exceptions apply.
For example, turning off ChatGPT’s improvement setting can leave ordinary chats in history; a Temporary Chat can still be retained for up to 30 days for safety; Claude feedback can trigger retention for up to five years; and Gemini activity deletion does not remove reviewer-retained data that may remain for up to three years. These examples show why one “privacy switch” cannot answer every question.

Memory and personalization
Memory can make a chatbot useful while creating a second persistence layer. In ChatGPT, Memory is managed under Settings → Personalization, separately from Data controls. Turning off model improvement does not automatically disable saved memories, custom instructions, or personalization.
Uploaded files and generated content
A prompt containing a document can expose names, account numbers, metadata, or confidential passages that are not obvious from the question. Check file-retention and workspace rules before uploading. Generated content can also contain sensitive details copied from the prompt or connected context.
Voice and live conversations
Gemini’s notice specifically includes Gemini Live transcripts and recordings. If you use voice, ask whether audio is recorded, whether a transcript is created, and which deletion setting covers each representation.

Connected apps and browser tools
Connectors, browser extensions, plugins, and third-party apps can transmit data outside the chatbot’s core storage. Limit permissions to the minimum needed, disconnect unused services, and inspect the recipient’s policy. A chatbot’s privacy setting cannot rewrite another company’s retention rules.
A practical decision framework
Score each service against your actual use rather than trying to name a universal winner.
- Define the data class. Separate ordinary brainstorming from passwords, financial identifiers, health records, legal advice, trade secrets, or regulated data.
- Match the account. Prefer a managed business or API arrangement only when its contract, administrator controls, and retention settings meet your requirements; do not assume a work account is automatically private.
- Disable prospective improvement. Find the exact model-improvement or activity control and read what it changes.
- Choose a low-history mode. Use ChatGPT Temporary Chat or Claude Incognito when their documented limits fit your task. Do not infer that Gemini ordinary chats have the same behavior.
- Turn off memory and integrations you do not need. Review personalization, browser tools, connectors, uploads, and voice separately.
- Test deletion with a harmless conversation. Confirm what disappears from history, what remains in activity logs, and whether a provider documents safety or reviewer exceptions.
- Recheck after policy changes. Provider settings and notices can change; review them before a new sensitive project.
When ChatGPT may fit
ChatGPT offers clearly documented consumer controls for model improvement, Temporary Chat, and Memory. It may fit users who want those controls and can keep sensitive material out of ordinary chats, while accepting the documented safety-retention and feedback exceptions.
When Claude may fit
Claude may fit users who value an Incognito mode that is explicitly excluded from model improvement. You must still account for safety-classifier exceptions, feedback-related retention of up to five years, and any browser or connector context.
When Gemini Apps may fit
Gemini Apps may fit users who already work inside Google’s ecosystem and can manage Gemini Apps Activity, connected apps, and related Google settings. Pay particular attention to human-review retention of up to three years and the breadth of device, location, voice, file, and app data described in the notice.
These are configuration-based fits, not independent privacy rankings. The best choice is the one whose documented controls and exceptions match your threat model.
Information you should not put into a consumer chatbot
Unless your organization has approved the exact service and terms, keep these out of consumer chats:

- Passwords, authentication codes, private keys, and recovery codes.
- Full payment-card numbers, bank credentials, tax identifiers, and identity-document numbers.
- Detailed health records, insurance information, or treatment documents.
- Confidential legal advice, unpublished contracts, trade secrets, and customer data.
- Personal information about another person without a lawful reason and appropriate consent.
- Unredacted files whose metadata or embedded comments reveal more than the visible text.
Redaction reduces exposure but does not make a consumer chatbot an approved confidential-data processor. Remove names, identifiers, account numbers, and unique combinations that could re-identify someone, and verify that the remaining task still works.
