Choose an agentic-AI cybersecurity platform by defining the agent’s task and risk boundary first, then verifying identity, least-privilege authorization, action limits, architecture coverage, monitoring, incident controls, and testable evidence. Do not begin with a vendor feature list. A platform is suitable only when you can understand, monitor, and contain what its agents do in your environment.
What an agentic AI cybersecurity platform must secure
An agentic system can read data, call tools, make decisions, and initiate actions with limited human intervention. That combination makes it different from a chatbot that only returns text. The security boundary includes the model, the agent’s orchestration logic, prompts and policies, memory or knowledge stores, connectors, execution environments, identity systems, and the people or workflows affected by its decisions.
Greater autonomy and interconnection create risks that ordinary model testing does not cover. An agent may receive excessive privileges, behave unpredictably when conditions change, follow malicious instructions in retrieved content, expose sensitive information through a connector, or leave no clear record of who authorized an action. CISA’s 1 May 2026 advisory summary highlights privilege escalation, emergent behavior, and accountability gaps. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) likewise treats the system around the model—not just the model itself—as part of the security problem.

- Which human, workload, or agent identity initiated it?
- What policy allowed it, against which resource and data?
- Which tool or integration executed it?
- What approval, constraint, or time limit applied?
- What happened, and can the action be stopped, reversed, or investigated?
1. Define the use case and its risk boundary
Write the operating design before evaluating products. Describe the task in operational terms rather than saying only “automate security” or “deploy an AI SOC analyst.” For example, specify whether an agent will summarize alerts, query a ticket system, enrich indicators, isolate an endpoint, change a firewall rule, or communicate with a customer.
Document the complete action path
- Inputs: data sources, documents, telemetry, messages, and user requests.
- Connected systems: identity providers, endpoint tools, cloud accounts, ticketing, code repositories, messaging, and databases.
- Tools: APIs, command execution, browsers, scripts, retrieval systems, and workflow actions.
- Users and owners: who can invoke the agent, who owns its workload identity, and who is accountable for outcomes.
- Downstream effects: data disclosure, production changes, financial commitments, customer communications, access changes, or physical consequences.
Set explicit boundaries
For each action, state what the agent may read, create, modify, delete, send, or initiate. Mark actions that require human approval and define unacceptable outcomes, such as changing a production access policy without review or exporting regulated data to an unapproved destination. Decide whether the task needs an autonomous agent at all. A deterministic workflow, rule, or conventional automation may achieve the same result with less exposure.
Start with a tightly bounded pilot. Limit the data, tools, users, destinations, and time window; observe real operation; and expand only after controls and failure handling are understood. The joint guidance titled Careful Adoption of Agentic AI Services (1 May 2026) and the NCSC both recommend this staged approach.

Authentication alone is not enough. The platform must establish which agent is acting, which human or workload owns it, and what the agent is allowed to do at that moment.
Questions for the identity model
- Does every agent have a distinct, machine-verifiable identity rather than sharing a human account or a generic service credential?
- Can the identity be tied to an owner, workload, environment, and approved use case?
- Are agent identities, operators, tools, and delegated services recorded in an inventory?
- Can access be granted, changed, suspended, and revoked without rebuilding the entire application?
NIST’s AI Agent Standards Initiative, created 17 February 2026 and updated 14 August 2026, identifies agent authentication and identity infrastructure as active work areas. It is an initiative, not a finished certification standard, so ask vendors for their current implementation evidence rather than treating NIST participation as approval.

Test least privilege and authorization at action time
Require authorization decisions to consider the specific agent, resource, operation, destination, and context. A policy that says an agent may “use the security API” is too broad unless it limits the API methods and objects it can affect. Look for controls that restrict:
- Tools and individual functions the agent may call.
- Data sets, fields, tenants, repositories, and environments it may access.
- Action types, such as read, annotate, create, modify, delete, execute, or send.
- Network destinations and data-transfer paths.
- Time windows, transaction limits, rate limits, and approval requirements.
Prefer short-lived, scoped, revocable credentials over long-lived tokens embedded in prompts, code, or configuration. Require a policy decision for each consequential action, not only when the session starts. Human oversight should be meaningful: the reviewer must see what will happen, the resources affected, and the reason for the action before approving it.

3. Map coverage across the entire architecture
Ask a candidate to draw the data and control path from the model to the final effect. CIS Controls v8.1’s AI Agents Companion Guide emphasizes that the agent layer extends existing controls across identity, endpoint execution, knowledge stores, integration pipelines, and operations monitoring. OWASP’s AI Security Verification Standard (AISVS) similarly addresses more than model output.
| Architecture layer | What to verify | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Model and prompts | Model provenance, isolation, prompt and policy protection, input and output handling | Architecture diagram, model records, configuration controls, change history |
| Orchestration | Planning, delegation, retries, tool selection, approval gates, and limits on autonomous loops | Policy definitions, execution traces, maximum-step and timeout settings |
| Memory and knowledge | Tenant separation, retention, poisoning resistance, access filtering, and deletion | Storage design, indexing controls, retention settings, test results |
| Tools and integrations | Per-tool permissions, input validation, connector ownership, and failure behavior | Connector inventory, API scopes, allowlists, error-handling tests |
| Execution environment | Isolation for code, browser, files, network access, and secrets | Sandbox design, egress rules, secret-management evidence |
| Identity and authorization | Agent identity, delegated authority, revocation, and per-action policy checks | Identity flows, authorization logs, revocation demonstration |
| Monitoring and operations | Telemetry, anomaly detection, human intervention, and incident workflows | Sample logs, alert rules, dashboards, runbooks, retention commitments |
| Supply chain | Models, plugins, packages, connectors, data sources, and updates | Component inventory, update process, supplier assessments, signing controls |
Ask where the platform has direct enforcement and where it relies on another product, connector, cloud service, or customer process. Record those dependencies and assign ownership. A control that exists only in marketing documentation or in a downstream system you cannot configure is not equivalent to an enforceable platform control.
4. Turn standards into acceptance tests
Use standards as test catalogs, not as substitutes for a risk assessment. OWASP AISVS 1.0, published in June 2026, contains 191 requirements in 12 chapters and three verification levels:
Rank #3
- 【Large size】:Measuring 800 x 300 mm/ 31. 5×12 inches, which is wider and taller than others. Large mouse pad can perfectly fit your keyboard and mouse of any size, and there is also ample space for peripherals such as phones, tablets, etc.
- 【LED backlight mouse pad】:Blade Hawks RGB mouse pad provides 7 static modes and 7 dynamic modes will give you the options you are looking for. Power-off memory function remembers the last lighting mode you selected. The super glow fiber Chroma will give you a colorful gaming setup that you want.
- 【Anti-slip rubber base】:Made from Natural rubber, this gaming mousepad will firmly grip your desktop, allowing you to enjoy the ultimate precision in the games you are most passionate about. It also comes with a texture that enhances this ability even further.
- 【Smooth and waterproof surface】: Micro-textured cloth surface, for extremely precise mouse control and a smooth movement. When liquid splashes on the gaming mouse pad, it forms water droplets and slides down. Will not delay your work or gameplay.
- 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.
| Verification level | Requirements | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | 51 | Baseline checks for fundamental protections and lower-risk deployments |
| Level 2 | 95 | More rigorous controls; OWASP says most production systems should target at least this level |
| Level 3 | 45 | Advanced assurance for systems with higher impact or more demanding threat models |
These are counts in the AISVS 1.0 standard, not statistics about breach reduction, detection speed, or platform performance. AISVS is vendor-neutral and supports procurement and assessments, but it is not a governance framework, product recommendation, or blanket certification. Select a target level for the system’s risk and document any justified exceptions.
Build a requirement-to-test record
- Write the requirement in measurable language, such as “The agent cannot call the production-delete function without an approved human decision.”
- Identify the evidence that proves it: configuration, policy export, event record, demonstration, test result, or independent assessment.
- Define the pass condition, including the expected denial, alert, or containment response.
- Run the test in a representative pilot environment, not only a scripted vendor demo.
- Record exceptions, compensating controls, owner, and review date.
Pair AI-specific requirements with ordinary application, infrastructure, identity, privacy, and supply-chain security reviews. AISVS explicitly assumes those general controls are verified in parallel.
5. Evaluate monitoring, oversight, and failure handling
An agent that works in a happy-path demonstration may still be unsafe in production. Require visibility into normal and abnormal behavior, with records that support both real-time intervention and later investigation.
Minimum event detail
- Agent identity, human or workload owner, session, and tenant.
- Prompt or request reference, policy version, model and orchestration version.
- Tool, connector, resource, operation, destination, and data classification involved.
- Authorization result, approval identity, reason for denial, and any policy override.
- Outcome, error, retry, side effect, and timestamp synchronized to your logs.
Check whether records are tamper-resistant, exportable to existing security operations, searchable across a multi-step plan, and retained for the period your investigations require. Ask how the system detects unusual tool use, privilege changes, data exfiltration, looping behavior, prompt-injection attempts, and activity outside the approved task.
Exercise the stop and recover path
Identify who can pause an agent, disable a tool, revoke credentials, quarantine a workload, and restore a known-safe policy. Test those actions during the pilot. Include a procedure for preserving evidence before cleanup and for communicating with affected owners or customers. The NCSC states: “If you cannot understand, monitor or contain an agent’s actions, it is not ready for deployment.”

CISA’s advisory summary recommends limiting autonomy so agents are not granted broad or unrestricted access, especially to sensitive data or critical systems. Treat that as an operational design requirement: containment must work even when the agent, model, connector, or operator is behaving unexpectedly.
6. Compare platforms with the same evidence
After defining the requirements, give every candidate the same scenarios, questions, data-handling constraints, and evidence deadline. Avoid awarding points for an unverified feature name. A useful scorecard can use weighted categories suited to your risk:
| Comparison axis | Evidence-based questions |
|---|---|
| Identity and authorization | Are identities unique, scoped, attributable, short-lived, and revocable? Are decisions evaluated per action and resource? |
| Autonomy and action boundaries | Can you restrict tools, data, destinations, action types, steps, time, rate, and approvals? |
| Architecture coverage | Does visibility include orchestration, memory, integrations, execution, supply chain, and monitoring? |
| Interoperability | Can logs, alerts, identity events, tickets, and response actions integrate with your existing operations? |
| Testability and audit evidence | Can the supplier map controls to AISVS or another requirement set and provide repeatable test evidence? |
| Monitoring and incident response | Can operators detect, pause, contain, investigate, and recover from misuse or failure? |
| Deployment and data handling | Where are prompts, memory, logs, and telemetry processed and retained? What isolation and deletion controls apply? |
| Operational burden | Who maintains policies, connectors, model updates, approvals, detections, and access reviews? |
| Total cost | What internal staffing, integration, storage, testing, support, and incident-response work is required in addition to licensing? |
Use a minimum-evidence rule: a candidate that cannot demonstrate a control in your use case should be scored as unverified, even if the roadmap or sales material describes it. Separate product capability from services, custom engineering, and controls that remain your responsibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Run a controlled pilot before expanding autonomy
A pilot should test both usefulness and the security boundary. Choose a task with a clear owner and reversible outcomes. Use synthetic or appropriately minimized data first, and connect only the systems necessary for the scenario.
- Prepare the environment. Create a separate tenant, project, account, or sandbox; define approved users, tools, destinations, and data classes.
- Configure identity and policy. Issue a dedicated agent identity, short-lived credentials, least-privilege scopes, approval gates, timeouts, and rate limits.
- Instrument every action. Export events to the security operations workflow and verify that identity, policy, tool, resource, and outcome are linked.
- Test ordinary cases. Measure whether the agent completes the allowed task without unnecessary access, retries, or data movement.
- Test hostile and ambiguous cases. Use malicious retrieved instructions, poisoned memory, malformed tool responses, unavailable services, conflicting requests, privilege-escalation attempts, and sensitive-data prompts.
- Trigger controls deliberately. Confirm that approvals, denials, alerts, credential revocation, pause, and recovery work as documented.
- Review evidence and burden. Record gaps, false alarms, manual effort, integration dependencies, and unresolved ownership before approving a larger scope.
Expand one boundary at a time—for example, from read-only enrichment to ticket creation, then to a narrowly defined change action. Re-run the relevant tests after model, policy, connector, or architecture changes.

Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing a model-security feature instead of a system control
Prompt filters and model evaluations do not prove that connectors, memory, identities, or execution environments are safe. Require evidence across the complete architecture.
Giving an agent a human’s standing privileges
Shared accounts and permanent administrator tokens destroy attribution and enlarge the blast radius. Use a distinct identity, narrowly scoped permissions, short-lived credentials, and tested revocation.
Accepting “human in the loop” as a vague promise
Ask which actions pause, what information the reviewer sees, how approval is authenticated, how long it remains valid, and whether an agent can bypass it through another tool or workflow.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Ignoring memory and retrieved content
Knowledge stores can contain stale, malicious, or cross-tenant information. Test access filtering, provenance, retention, poisoning resistance, and deletion rather than treating retrieval as passive reading.
Scoring an untestable roadmap as current capability
Mark a control as implemented only when it can be configured and demonstrated in the target deployment. Keep planned functions, custom work, and third-party dependencies in separate fields.
Relying on a single framework
AISVS provides AI-specific verification requirements; CIS Controls v8.1 applies established safeguards to the agent layer; the joint government guidance addresses adoption and operational risk; NIST’s initiative is developing voluntary standards and evaluations; and OWASP’s Securing Agentic Applications Guide 1.0 (27 July 2025) offers practical design and deployment guidance. Use them together with your existing application, infrastructure, privacy, and supply-chain controls.
Procurement checklist
- Use case, owner, data classes, connected systems, tools, downstream effects, and unacceptable outcomes are documented.
- The business case explains why an agent is needed instead of a lower-risk workflow.
- Each agent has a distinct identity tied to a human or workload owner.
- Permissions are least-privilege, scoped by resource and action, time-limited, and revocable.
- Policies constrain tools, destinations, data, action types, loops, rate, and approvals.
- Coverage and customer responsibility are mapped across model, orchestration, memory, integrations, execution, supply chain, and monitoring.
- Requirements map to acceptance tests, with evidence owners and review dates.
- Logs connect identity, request, policy decision, tool, resource, outcome, and approval.
- Operators can detect abnormal behavior, pause the agent, revoke access, preserve evidence, and recover.
- A bounded pilot has completed ordinary, adversarial, failure, and recovery scenarios.
- Data processing, retention, isolation, deletion, support access, and update practices are documented.
- Total cost includes integration, policy administration, monitoring, testing, training, and incident response—not only the license.
What a defensible decision looks like
Approve a platform only when its controls are demonstrated against the actual task and the remaining risks have named owners and compensating measures. A lower-autonomy design with clear authorization, complete records, and reliable containment is usually a stronger starting point than a more capable agent whose behavior and access you cannot explain.
Keep the decision current. Agent systems change when models, prompts, memory, connectors, policies, and downstream workflows change. Schedule reassessment, repeat high-risk acceptance tests, review identities and privileges, and require security approval before expanding the agent’s tools or data. This turns platform selection from a one-time product purchase into a controlled operating capability.
