Choose the aggregator that performs best for your own customers, institutions, countries, data fields, consent model, and operating budget—not the one with the largest connection-count claim. Build a representative institution test set, require each candidate to explain its authentication and data behavior, run equivalent pilots, and compare written total-cost quotes under identical assumptions. Coverage, credential handling, consent, reliability, pricing, and regulatory fit can vary by institution and market, so a universal winner does not exist.
What an account aggregator does
An account aggregator is an intermediary that connects a financial application to banks and other financial institutions, retrieves permissioned data, and delivers that data through one integration. Instead of maintaining a separate connection for every institution, your app integrates with the aggregator’s API or SDK and receives normalized information such as balances, transactions, account ownership, identity attributes, liabilities, investments, or other supported fields.
A typical flow looks like this:
- Your app explains why it needs access and starts the connection experience.
- The user selects an institution and authenticates through the path available for that institution.
- The institution or intermediary issues an authorization or access token, or the flow uses another supported credential method.
- The aggregator retrieves the permitted data, normalizes it, and sends the fields your product requested.
- Your app stores, displays, analyzes, or acts on the data according to its stated purpose and retention policy.
The trade-off is operational. In the European Union’s PSD2 context, the OECD describes an aggregator as a way for an app to reduce the time and cost of obtaining the necessary integrations and maintaining every institution API itself. The intermediary also adds a vendor relationship, another dependency, and another cost. Whether that trade-off is worthwhile depends on your market, legal role, scale, and engineering capacity.
Define the app’s data contract before looking at vendors
Write a one-page data contract before requesting demonstrations. It prevents a persuasive user interface from hiding an unsuitable data product.

State the user task
Specify the outcome the connection enables: account display, income or balance verification, lending decisions, personal-finance insights, payment initiation, fraud controls, or another defined task. A budgeting product may need read-only balances and transactions; a lending workflow may additionally require ownership, income, liabilities, or identity data. Requesting data that does not support the stated task increases privacy, compliance, and user-experience risk.
List required fields and behavior
For every field, record whether it is mandatory, how recent it must be, and how much history is useful. Include account identifiers, available and current balances, pending transactions, transaction categories, owners, institution metadata, liabilities, investments, or insurance only when the workflow needs them. Define whether the app needs an initial historical import, ongoing refreshes, event webhooks, or on-demand updates. Ask how corrections, reversals, deleted accounts, and duplicate transactions are represented.
Set launch boundaries
Document launch countries, currencies, account types, and customer segments. Include joint and business accounts, credit cards, loans, brokerage accounts, and unusual institution types if they matter to your users. An aggregator’s headline connection count does not prove support for your particular mix.

Coverage is a testable product requirement, not a marketing number. Build an anonymized list from expected customers, historical sign-up data, or a carefully designed sample. Rank institutions by expected user share and identify the accounts that would make the product unusable if they failed.
What to ask each candidate
- Which institutions in your list are supported in each launch country?
- Which account types and data products are available for each institution?
- Is the connection direct API, OAuth, an intermediary credential flow, file upload, or manual verification?
- Are joint, business, credit, investment, and loan accounts handled differently?
- How much transaction history is returned initially, and how are refreshes scheduled?
- What happens when an institution changes its login, consent screen, or API behavior?
Require the answers in writing and map them to individual institutions. “Supported” should mean more than appearing in a directory: it should identify the connection method, fields, account types, geographic availability, and known limitations.
Run representative connection tests
Use test accounts or consenting pilot users that reflect the institution list. Record whether a user can complete authentication, whether the expected accounts appear, which required fields are populated, and how the flow behaves when additional verification is required. Test both the most common institutions and low-volume accounts that are strategically important. Do not infer your app’s success rate from a provider’s general connection total.
Understand authentication and credential handling
Users care whether they share a bank password, where that password travels, and how access can be stopped. The answer can differ by institution and connection path, even within one provider.

OAuth and direct API connections
In an OAuth or direct API flow, the user is generally redirected to the institution, authenticates there, and authorizes specific permissions. Plaid’s consumer documentation says these connections do not store account credentials. The institution issues an authorization result that the aggregator uses to access permitted data. Confirm token lifetime, refresh behavior, scopes, reauthorization triggers, and whether your app ever handles the access token directly.
Non-OAuth intermediary flows
Some institutions do not offer OAuth or a comparable direct API. Plaid explains that certain non-OAuth connections involve Plaid storing account credentials. The exact behavior depends on the institution and flow, so do not describe a provider as universally credential-free. Ask whether credentials are collected, encrypted, isolated, rotated, exposed to your systems, or deleted after a token is established. Ask what additional user disclosures and support procedures apply.
Questions for the security review
- Which systems can view or process user credentials, tokens, and raw financial data?
- How are secrets encrypted in transit and at rest, and how are keys managed?
- What permissions are requested at each institution, and can the user select accounts individually?
- How are compromised, expired, or revoked tokens detected and invalidated?
- What audit reports, penetration-test summaries, incident procedures, and subcontractor lists can the provider supply?
- Can your organization export connection logs and prove which data was accessed for a user?
Treat consent as a lifecycle
Consent is not complete when a user presses “Continue.” Your design must explain the purpose, limit the requested data, show what was authorized, and provide a practical way to revoke and delete access.
At connection time
Tell the user which institution will be connected, which accounts and fields are requested, why they are needed, how often data will refresh, and how long your app will retain it. Separate optional permissions from mandatory ones. Avoid bundling unrelated products into one broad authorization.

Give users a visible list of connected institutions, accounts, permissions, last refresh time, and connection status. MX describes a permissioned data-sharing product with a dashboard for managing and revoking access. Plaid lists connection and permission-management tools for institutional partners. Treat these as product capabilities to verify in your implementation, not as proof that every integration has identical controls.
Revocation, deletion, and retention
Define what happens when a user disconnects an account, revokes access at the institution, closes an account, or deletes the app. Stop refresh jobs, invalidate tokens, remove cached copies, and propagate deletion to downstream systems where required. Keep only the records needed for legal, fraud, accounting, or support obligations, and document those exceptions. Test that a revoked connection cannot silently reconnect through a background job.
Match data scope to open banking or open finance
Plaid distinguishes open banking, focused primarily on bank-account sharing, from open finance, which can include broader consumer-permissioned data such as loans, credit, investments, and insurance. The distinction matters because a provider may support bank balances while lacking the investment or liability fields your workflow requires.

For each candidate, create a field-level matrix:
| Data area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Accounts and balances | Are current, available, ledger, and pending balances supplied? How are currency and overdraft states represented? |
| Transactions | How much history is available? Are pending, reversed, duplicate, and categorized transactions identified? |
| Ownership and identity | Are account holders, addresses, tax identifiers, or verification attributes available, and under what permissions? |
| Liabilities and credit | Are loans, cards, limits, rates, payment schedules, and balances supported for your target institutions? |
| Investments and insurance | Are holdings, valuations, policies, and contribution data available, or is the product limited to deposits? |
| Updates | What triggers refreshes, how stale can data become, and are webhooks available for changes? |
Ask for sample payloads and error responses using the same fields you will implement. “Available” should mean populated and usable for the institutions in your pilot, not merely present in documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEvaluate reliability as an institution-level property
Connection quality is not one number. Measure completion and freshness for each important institution, then examine how failures are communicated and recovered.
Metrics to capture
- Connection-start to completed-authorization rate.
- Percentage of connected accounts that expose every mandatory field.
- Time from a requested refresh to usable data.
- Frequency of reauthentication, MFA challenges, and institution outages.
- Rates of duplicate, missing, delayed, or incorrectly categorized transactions.
- Time to detect an error and restore a connection.
- Support response time and the quality of incident updates.
Separate a provider outage from an institution outage and from an error in your own implementation. Require a status page or equivalent incident communication, documented retry guidance, and escalation contacts. A contractual service-level agreement should define what is measured, the reporting window, exclusions, and remedies; a generic uptime statement is not enough.
Compare integration effort and operational burden
Review the entire developer experience, not just the first API call. Check whether the SDKs match your platforms, whether sandbox data resembles production responses, and whether documentation covers consent, webhooks, pagination, rate limits, retries, and migrations.
- Confirm language and mobile/web SDK support for your stack.
- Test sandbox account linking, token exchange, refresh, webhook verification, and error recovery.
- Estimate engineering work for user interface, backend normalization, observability, support tooling, and data deletion.
- Ask how institution changes are announced and whether the provider maintains the connection or expects your team to react.
- Clarify rate limits, batch access, historical imports, export formats, and data-model versioning.
- Identify professional-services, implementation, and production-approval requirements.
Include the cost of maintaining a fallback or manual-verification path for institutions that cannot connect reliably. A lower integration fee can be outweighed by support tickets and abandoned onboarding.
Compare total cost under identical assumptions
Public materials reviewed for this topic do not provide a neutral, app-specific pricing comparison. Obtain written quotes using the same assumptions: active users, connected accounts per user, products, refresh cadence, countries, support tier, implementation assistance, and service-level requirements.
| Cost component | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Implementation | One-time setup, certification, professional services, sandbox access, and production approval fees. |
| Usage | Per connection, active user, account, API call, refresh, data product, or transaction; identify included allowances. |
| Minimums | Monthly commitments, annual minimums, ramp periods, overage rates, and regional pricing. |
| Support | Standard and premium response times, named escalation, incident communication, and integration assistance. |
| Data operations | Historical backfills, exports, webhooks, reauthentication handling, and storage or retention services. |
| Contract and exit | Term, renewal, price changes, termination notice, data export format, deletion deadlines, and migration help. |
Model at least three scenarios: expected launch volume, a high-growth case, and a low-volume case. Include failed connections, reconnects, support contacts, and the cost of maintaining any secondary provider. Never compare a promotional allowance or a one-time credit with a recurring price without labeling it.

Check regulatory and privacy fit for your market
Aggregator and app responsibilities depend on jurisdiction, products, and the parties’ legal roles. The OECD’s PSD2 discussion is specifically about the European Union context and should not be treated as a universal legal rule. Ask counsel to determine whether your organization needs authorization, registration, accreditation, a data-processing agreement, special disclosures, or a separate payment-services arrangement.
Ask each provider to identify its role, regulated entities, sub-processors, data-residency options, breach-notification commitments, cross-border transfer mechanisms, retention schedule, and response process for data-subject requests. Confirm that the contract lets your privacy and security teams audit relevant controls and that your user-facing notices match the actual flow.
A seven-step selection process
- Define the task and minimum data. Document the user outcome, required fields, refresh expectations, retention period, and unacceptable data gaps.
- Build the institution set. List priority banks and other institutions by country, account type, customer share, and edge case. Remove identifying customer information from the test plan.
- Request an institution-by-institution map. Ask each candidate to state connection method, supported fields, account types, geography, known limitations, and fallback options for every priority institution.
- Review consent and lifecycle controls. Walk through authorization, permission display, revocation, deletion, retention, token expiry, and support access from the user’s perspective.
- Run equivalent pilots. Use the same representative accounts and scripted tasks. Measure completion, field coverage, freshness, reauthentication, error recovery, and support response. The available vendor materials do not establish independent benchmark values, so record your own results rather than inventing a winner.
- Normalize commercial proposals. Give every provider the same volume, refresh, product, support, and service-level assumptions. Record minimums, overages, implementation charges, term, and exit provisions.
- Choose against gates, then score trade-offs. Eliminate candidates that miss a mandatory institution, field, security control, consent requirement, or regulatory condition. Among the survivors, select the best balance of measured performance, total cost, integration effort, and operational resilience. Keep a fallback only when its value justifies ongoing integration and support cost.
Use a decision scorecard
Set pass/fail gates before scoring so a low price cannot compensate for a critical coverage or privacy failure. Weight the remaining criteria according to your product’s risk.
| Axis | Evidence to require | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Target-market coverage | Pilot results by institution, account type, country, and method | Does the provider work for the customers we expect? |
| Data scope and quality | Field matrix, sample payloads, history and freshness results | Can the workflow operate without manual reconstruction? |
| Authentication and security | OAuth/API coverage, credential handling, token controls, audit evidence | Can we explain and defend the access path? |
| Consent and control | Permission screens, dashboard, revocation, deletion and retention tests | Can users understand and stop access? |
| Reliability and support | Institution-level metrics, incident process, SLA and escalation | What happens when a connection fails? |
| Integration effort | SDK/API fit, sandbox, documentation, webhooks and maintenance estimate | Can our team launch and operate it safely? |
| Total cost and contract | Comparable quote, minimums, overages, term and exit plan | Is the three-year cost acceptable at realistic volumes? |
| Regulatory fit | Roles, licenses or accreditations, privacy terms and data residency | Can the arrangement operate lawfully in every launch market? |
Common selection mistakes and fixes
Choosing by connection count
Failure: treating a broad directory as proof of coverage. Fix: test the institutions, account types, countries, and required fields that determine your product’s success.
Assuming every connection is credential-free
Failure: promising users that no credentials are ever stored. Fix: document the method for each institution and disclose non-OAuth behavior accurately.
Requesting every available data product
Failure: asking for broad permissions because they may be useful later. Fix: tie each permission to a current user task and make optional access separate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Measuring only the happy path
Failure: testing one popular bank and a successful login. Fix: include MFA, expired tokens, institution downtime, partial data, duplicate transactions, revocation, and reconnects.

Comparing incompatible quotes
Failure: comparing per-user pricing from one provider with per-refresh pricing from another. Fix: submit identical volume and refresh assumptions and calculate a common annual and multi-year model.
Leaving exit planning until renewal
Failure: discovering that data export, deletion, or migration is undefined. Fix: negotiate export format, deletion deadlines, notice periods, and transition assistance before signing.
How to maintain the choice after launch
Institution coverage and authentication behavior change. Establish a quarterly review of connection completion, stale-data rates, field availability, reauthentication, incidents, support response, cost per active connection, and user complaints. Re-run a small regression suite after provider, institution, SDK, or consent-screen changes.

Review whether retained data is still necessary, whether revoked connections are actually deleted, and whether vendor subprocessors or processing locations have changed.
Escalate recurring failures with institution-level evidence rather than aggregate anecdotes. If a provider no longer meets a mandatory gate, activate the documented fallback or pause onboarding for the affected institution instead of silently degrading the user experience.
Final selection rule
Select the aggregator that clears every non-negotiable requirement for your target institutions and data contract, then offers the strongest measured combination of authentication safety, consent control, reliability, integration effort, support, regulatory fit, and total cost. Treat provider documentation and product claims as starting points; make the decision from institution-level tests, written commitments, and a lifecycle design that users can understand and revoke.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should a startup use one account aggregator or integrate banks directly?
Use an aggregator when reducing the time and maintenance burden of many institution integrations is worth paying an intermediary. Direct integrations may make sense for a narrow institution set or a market where you already have the necessary capabilities, but compare legal responsibilities, engineering effort, coverage, and ongoing maintenance before deciding.
Recommended Free Tools
Does OAuth guarantee that an aggregator never handles credentials?
OAuth or direct API connections generally avoid sending credentials to the intermediary, and Plaid documents those connections as not storing account credentials. However, institutions may use different methods; some non-OAuth flows can involve credential storage. Verify the method and handling for each institution you support.
How many institutions should be included in a pilot?
Include every institution that is mandatory for launch plus a representative sample of high-volume and unusual account types in each country. The correct set depends on your customer mix; a fixed industry-wide number would not establish coverage for your app.
What should happen when a user revokes access?
Stop refresh jobs, invalidate tokens, remove cached copies according to your retention policy, notify dependent systems, and show the disconnected status. Test revocation both in your app and at the financial institution so a background process cannot silently restore access.
