The safest choice starts with identity ownership, not a product shortlist. If a partner already runs a corporate identity provider (IdP), let that organization authenticate its people and connect it to your environment with federation and standards-based provisioning. If you must govern identities in your own tenant, use guest identities with scoped application assignments, approvals, reviews, and rapid revocation. For sensitive partner access, require phishing-resistant multifactor authentication (MFA), such as a FIDO2 security key.
Microsoft Entra External ID (including B2B collaboration) is usually the clearest fit for Microsoft-centered environments. AWS IAM Identity Center is usually the clearest fit for AWS Organizations with multiple accounts. A SAML 2.0/SCIM-capable federation model is the better category choice when many partner companies already maintain their own IdPs.
What you are actually choosing
An external-partner access tool is an identity and authorization control plane for people who are not employees in your directory. It must answer four operational questions:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Who owns the identity? The partner, your organization, or a dedicated portal.
- What can the person do? Access should map to named applications, groups, roles, projects, or cloud accounts.
- How long does access last? Joiner, mover, leaver, expiration, approval, and review processes need explicit rules.
- How can you prove and stop it? Authentication, MFA, assignment changes, sign-ins, and revocations must be logged and reviewable.
The wrong architecture creates unmanaged local accounts, stale invitations, unclear MFA responsibility, and broad access that survives a contract ending. The right architecture preserves the partner’s existing identity where practical while keeping your organization in control of authorization and audit.

How do I securely give vendors or external partners access without creating unmanaged accounts?
Choose one of three identity patterns for each partner relationship. Do not force every partner into the same pattern; a strategic supplier with a mature IdP may need federation, while a small contractor may be better handled as a governed guest.
Federation: the partner keeps its home identity
With federation, the partner authenticates users in its own IdP and sends an assertion to your service. SAML 2.0 is the common enterprise protocol cited for this scenario. Your administrators control which applications, groups, roles, or accounts the federated users receive, while the partner remains responsible for its primary credentials and employment status.
Federation is strongest when a partner has a reliable directory, security team, and established MFA process. It avoids duplicate passwords and makes a partner’s internal disablement available to your access decision. It also introduces operational dependencies: metadata and certificate rotation, attribute mapping, clock and identifier consistency, and agreement about who enforces MFA.

Guest identities: your tenant governs the external object
A guest model represents the external person in your directory as a guest user. Microsoft Entra B2B collaboration, for example, uses an invitation and redemption flow that allows partners to use their own credentials. The guest object gives your tenant a concrete place to apply application assignments, group membership, approval, expiration, access reviews, and Conditional Access policies.
Guest access is practical when you share Microsoft applications or need tenant-level governance, but it requires discipline. Invitations can accumulate, guest objects can outlive contracts, and cross-tenant trust settings can unintentionally accept external MFA or device claims more broadly than intended. Define ownership, expiration, review cadence, and removal behavior before sending the first invitation.
Dedicated external portal: isolate a specialized workflow
A separate partner portal can be appropriate when the interaction is a narrowly defined business process rather than access to internal applications. The portal owns the user experience and can expose only the data and actions designed for partners. It is not automatically safer: you still need a sound identity source, MFA, provisioning, authorization, logging, and offboarding process. Use it when isolation or a purpose-built workflow outweighs the administrative cost of operating another boundary.
Six criteria for comparing tools
1. Identity ownership and federation
Ask whether a partner can sign in with its existing corporate credentials. Microsoft Entra B2B supports external identities and federation. AWS IAM Identity Center accepts external IdPs through SAML 2.0. A tool that requires every partner to receive a new local password increases duplication and offboarding risk.
Document the trust in both directions: which partner IdPs are accepted, which claims are required, whether the partner’s MFA or device claim is trusted, and who investigates an authentication failure. Treat every new partner domain or IdP as a deliberate trust change.

- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
2. Provisioning and lifecycle automation
Authentication answers “who are you?” Provisioning answers “should an account or assignment exist?” Look for SCIM support when a partner directory must create, update, and deactivate users automatically. AWS documents SCIM provisioning for IAM Identity Center integrations; federation guidance also identifies SCIM as the automation path for directory changes.
For guest identities, look for entitlement packages, approval workflows, expiration dates, periodic access reviews, and a single action that removes all assignments. Verify how quickly a deprovisioning event takes effect and what happens when SCIM is unavailable. A manual spreadsheet is not an adequate substitute for a tested leaver process.
3. Least privilege and segmentation
External access should be assigned to a named application, group, role, project, or AWS account rather than to a broad network segment. In Microsoft environments, cross-tenant access settings can scope inbound and outbound collaboration, while Conditional Access can target external-user categories. In AWS, permission sets and account assignments provide a central way to define what a user can do in each account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Separate read, contribute, approve, and administer actions. Keep production and non-production boundaries distinct. If a partner needs one application, do not grant an entire suite; if it needs one AWS account, do not map it to every account in the organization.
4. Authentication strength
Require MFA for partner access. For sensitive applications, select a phishing-resistant authentication strength rather than accepting any second factor. Microsoft documents Conditional Access policies that enforce authentication requirements for external users, including phishing-resistant methods. A FIDO2 security key is one example of that class.
Decide whether the partner’s MFA claim is trusted or whether your tenant requires an additional challenge. Record exceptions, their expiration dates, and the person who approved them. A policy that says “MFA required” but accepts an unverified external claim is not equivalent to a policy that enforces the required strength.
5. Platform fit and operating skills
Choose the control plane your administrators already understand and monitor. Microsoft-centered estates benefit from tenant, guest, entitlement, cross-tenant, and Conditional Access controls in one administrative model. AWS Organizations benefit from IAM Identity Center’s centralized account assignments, permission sets, and command-line access patterns.
Fit also includes logging, incident response, directory ownership, and support coverage. A technically capable product can still be a poor choice if nobody can review its logs, rotate federation certificates, or respond to an emergency revocation.

6. Auditability and offboarding
Confirm that the tool records invitations, redemptions, authentications, MFA outcomes, group or role changes, approvals, access reviews, and revocations. Logs should identify the external organization, user, application or account, action, timestamp, and result.
Make partner departure a defined event. The contract owner or sponsor should trigger removal, the identity system should revoke assignments, and security staff should verify that active sessions, tokens, API credentials, and delegated roles cannot continue to authorize work. Retain evidence according to your organization’s audit and legal requirements.
How the main options differ
| Option | Identity model | Provisioning and governance | Strongest fit | Key watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Entra External ID / B2B collaboration | Guest objects can use the partner’s credentials and supported external IdPs. | Entitlement-management policies, approvals, expiration and reviews; cross-tenant controls; Conditional Access for external users. | Organizations operating Microsoft 365 or Entra ID and sharing Microsoft applications. | Guest-object lifecycle, invitation sprawl, cross-tenant trust decisions, and feature or licensing requirements must be validated in the tenant. |
| AWS IAM Identity Center | External IdPs connect through SAML 2.0; users can sign in with existing enterprise credentials. | SCIM provisioning, centralized account and application assignments, permission sets, and command-line access. | AWS Organizations that need governed multi-account access. | Permission-set design, partner-to-account mapping, emergency access, and deprovisioning behavior require testing. |
| Federated enterprise IdP pattern | The partner retains its home identity in an IdP such as Okta, Microsoft Entra, Ping, or Google Workspace. | SAML 2.0 handles authentication; SCIM can automate user and group lifecycle where supported. | Ecosystems with many partner companies and an established federation operating model. | Inconsistent partner assurance, metadata and certificate rotation, attribute mapping, and unclear MFA responsibility. |
| Dedicated partner portal | Portal-specific accounts or federation, isolated from broader internal applications. | Portal must provide its own approvals, MFA, authorization, logging, expiration, and revocation. | A narrowly defined external workflow that benefits from strong application isolation. | Creates another security boundary and operating stack; do not assume isolation replaces identity governance. |
Microsoft Entra External ID and B2B collaboration
Microsoft describes B2B collaboration as a simple invitation and redemption process in which partners use their own credentials to access company resources. The external person is represented as a guest user in your directory, allowing administrators to assign applications and groups and apply tenant policies.
Controls that matter
- External identity providers: permit partners to authenticate through an accepted external IdP rather than creating a separate password.
- Entitlement management: package applications and groups with request, approval, expiration, and review policies for external users.
- Cross-tenant access settings: define inbound and outbound collaboration scope and decide whether external MFA and device claims are trusted.
- Conditional Access: target external-user categories and enforce MFA or a phishing-resistant authentication strength for sensitive applications.
This model is a natural fit when the resources being shared are Microsoft applications or when a central tenant team already manages Entra policies. Before adoption, validate the guest lifecycle, invitation restrictions, tenant-to-tenant trust choices, and the licensing or feature tier required for the controls you intend to use.
AWS IAM Identity Center
AWS IAM Identity Center connects external IdPs through SAML 2.0 and can use SCIM for provisioning. AWS documents a flow in which users sign in with existing credentials from an IdP such as Okta or Microsoft Entra and receive centrally assigned account, role, and application access.
Why it suits multi-account AWS estates
Permission sets provide a central definition of the permissions a user receives in an account. Account assignments then map the person or group to the accounts where that set is allowed. This makes partner-to-account boundaries explicit and supports centralized administration instead of creating separate IAM users in every account.
AWS recommends managing user access in IAM Identity Center with identity federation instead of creating IAM users as a security best practice. Follow that direction for partner access unless a documented exception is necessary, and give the exception an owner, scope, and retirement date.

- Map each partner group to specific accounts and permission sets; reject wildcard account coverage.
- Define how SCIM updates, suspensions, and deletions affect existing account assignments.
- Test emergency access when the external IdP or SCIM service is unavailable.
- Verify both console and command-line access paths, including session duration and logging.
Federated enterprise IdPs as a category
When many partner companies already operate SAML-compatible IdPs, establish a repeatable federation pattern rather than inventing a one-off integration for every company. Publish the required identifiers, claims, group or role mappings, certificate process, MFA expectations, and support contacts.

Questions to settle with each partner
- Which IdP is authoritative for the users and groups being shared?
- Which immutable identifier will remain stable if a person’s email address changes?
- Which attributes map to your application, group, or role assignments?
- How are signing certificates rotated, and how much overlap is provided?
- Does the partner enforce MFA, and can you verify its strength?
- Who disables the account when the user leaves, changes job, or loses the contract?
Federation scales only when these responsibilities are written down. Otherwise, every integration becomes a bespoke trust relationship that is difficult to audit.
Implementation: a practical selection and rollout sequence
- Inventory the relationship. Record each partner organization, users or groups, applications, data sensitivity, required actions, contract owner, and expected end date.
- Choose the identity pattern. Mark each relationship as federated, guest-based, or portal-based. Use the partner’s IdP when its assurance and lifecycle controls meet your requirements; use a governed guest when your tenant must own the external object.
- Define the authorization boundary. Name the exact application, group, role, project, or AWS account. Separate read, write, approval, and administration privileges.
- Set authentication requirements. Require MFA for all partner access. For sensitive applications, require phishing-resistant authentication strength, and document whether an external MFA claim is trusted.
- Automate provisioning where justified. Use SAML 2.0 for federation and SCIM where user or group lifecycle automation is needed. If a manual process remains, assign an owner and a maximum completion time.
- Build lifecycle policy before invitations. Configure approval, expiration, access-review frequency, sponsor ownership, and immediate revocation. Decide what happens to active sessions and tokens at removal.
- Configure trust and segmentation. Restrict accepted partner domains or tenants, set cross-tenant inbound and outbound rules, and prevent broad network access when an application-level assignment is sufficient.
- Enable evidence collection. Confirm that invitations, authentications, MFA results, role or group changes, approvals, reviews, and revocations reach the logs your security team monitors.
- Run a controlled pilot. Use a non-critical application or account and test one partner user through the complete workflow before expanding.
- Review and expand deliberately. Record defects, adjust mappings and policies, obtain the application owner’s approval, and onboard additional partners only after the joiner, mover, leaver, and emergency tests pass.
Test cases that expose weak designs
Joiner
Invite or provision a new partner user. Confirm the approval path, identity verification, MFA requirement, assigned resources, notification, and audit record. The user should receive only the access listed in the request.
Mover
Change the user’s partner group or role. Verify that old assignments are removed, new assignments appear only after any required approval, and logs show who made the change and why.
Leaver
Disable the user at the partner IdP or remove the guest. Confirm that SCIM or the guest workflow removes assignments, active sessions are handled as designed, and a subsequent sign-in fails.
Failed MFA
Attempt access with an unapproved or weak authentication method. The policy should block the sensitive application and produce a useful event for investigation without revealing unnecessary information to the user.
Emergency revocation
Revoke one partner’s access during an incident. Measure the time from the administrator’s action to denial at every application or account, including command-line sessions and delegated roles. Document any residual access that requires a separate action.
Common failure modes and how to correct them
Inviting everyone as a permanent guest
Symptom: a directory contains inactive guests with no sponsor or end date. Correction: use entitlement packages or equivalent approval and expiration controls, assign a business owner, and run periodic access reviews.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTrusting a partner’s MFA without defining assurance
Symptom: policy reports MFA success, but the partner’s method is unknown or not phishing-resistant. Correction: document trusted claims and enforce your own authentication strength for sensitive applications.
Best Value
- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
Granting broad access to simplify administration
Symptom: one group reaches many applications or AWS accounts. Correction: create narrowly scoped groups, roles, permission sets, and account assignments; separate production from non-production.
Relying on email addresses as permanent identifiers
Symptom: a job change or domain rename creates duplicate identities or leaves old access attached. Correction: use a stable immutable identifier in federation and test attribute changes during the pilot.
Assuming deprovisioning is instantaneous
Symptom: the directory shows a user as removed while an application session or cloud role still works. Correction: test token, session, API credential, and role behavior separately, then document the actual revocation time for each resource.
Recommended Free Tools
Choosing a platform without operational ownership
Symptom: certificates expire, SCIM errors go unnoticed, or no team reviews external sign-ins. Correction: assign platform, application, partner, and incident owners; monitor synchronization and authentication failures as production controls.
Decision examples
Microsoft 365 collaboration with a few strategic suppliers
Use Entra B2B guest identities when suppliers need defined Microsoft applications and your tenant team can operate entitlement and Conditional Access policies. Require sponsor approval, expiration, periodic review, and phishing-resistant MFA for high-impact data.
AWS organization with many accounts and an established corporate directory
Use IAM Identity Center with the existing IdP through SAML 2.0 and SCIM. Map partner groups to narrowly scoped permission sets and named accounts, then test console, command-line, emergency, and leaver behavior.
Many independent partners with their own identity teams
Adopt a documented federation pattern. Standardize SAML metadata, claims, certificate rotation, MFA assurance, SCIM expectations, support contacts, and offboarding responsibilities. Use a guest or portal path only for partners that cannot meet the federation requirements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Final selection checklist
- Identity ownership and accepted federation method are documented.
- Every assignment names an application, group, role, project, or account.
- MFA is mandatory, with phishing-resistant authentication for sensitive access.
- Provisioning, expiration, review, and revocation behavior are tested rather than assumed.
- Partner, application, platform, and incident owners are named.
- Invitations, sign-ins, MFA outcomes, changes, approvals, and revocations are searchable in logs.
- Joiner, mover, leaver, failed-MFA, and emergency-revocation scenarios pass in a controlled pilot.
The practical verdict is to match the tool to the identity owner and the platform you already operate: federate mature partner IdPs, govern unavoidable external users as scoped guests, and use a dedicated portal only when workflow isolation justifies another control plane. Enforce strong MFA, least privilege, automated lifecycle where possible, and tested offboarding regardless of the product.
