Choose algae-based ink by printing process first, then substrate, cure equipment, appearance, and compliance requirements. ALGAE INK™ is a black ink made with Living Ink’s algae-derived ALGAE BLACK™ pigment in a water- or soy-based carrier. It is intended as a drop-in replacement for carbon-black inks and is offered for offset, flexographic, and screen-printing work. The right product for a paper carton, a plastic label, a fabric shirt, and an art print may be different, so do not choose from the sustainability claim alone.
Before committing to production, obtain the current technical data sheet (TDS), safety data sheet (SDS), and certification for the exact stock-keeping unit and region. Then run a controlled proof on the real substrate and record adhesion, rub resistance, color, cure settings, and cleanup behavior.
What algae-based ink is—and what it is not
Living Ink describes ALGAE INK™ as a black printing ink that combines ALGAE BLACK™ pigment derived from algae with water or soy carriers. The company positions it as a drop-in replacement for inks colored with carbon black. Product information covers offset, flexographic, flat-bed screen, and rotary screen applications.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat description establishes a black-pigment system, not a complete replacement for every color in a conventional ink room. The documented products and technical pages focus on black. If your artwork needs colored spot inks or process-color separation, ask the supplier for a complete color system rather than assuming algae pigment is available in the required hues.

Environmental and chemistry claims need product-level verification
Product pages state that the ALGAE INK line contains no PVC, phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), mineral oils, or intentionally added PFAS. These are manufacturer or retailer product claims, not a substitute for checking the current SDS and formulation for your exact SKU. The same pages list OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT; request the current certificate and confirm that it covers the product, production site, and market where you will sell.
One packaging product is described by its supplier as using a carbon-negative algae pigment. No independent, publisher-dated life-cycle assessment establishes a numeric carbon reduction for the entire ink system, so avoid treating “carbon-negative” as a measured reduction for your finished package without a product-specific LCA.
Start with the process and substrate
Ink has to transfer, wet, dry or cure, and adhere under your actual press conditions. Use the following as a screening map, then validate with a proof.
| Application | Documented algae-ink option | What to verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Paper packaging and general commercial print | Water- or soy-carrier ALGAE INK for offset or suitable screen/flexographic work | Press type, ink viscosity, drying time, rub resistance, coating or varnish compatibility, and recycling or disposal requirements |
| Labels and high-throughput packaging | ACTExact® UV Black Algae Ink, described as a UV-curable flexographic ink using algae pigment | Anilox specification, plate and press compatibility, UV lamp output, cure window, film or paper construction, and converter approval |
| Fabric or other screen-print jobs | Modern Black Screen ALGAE INK or Vintage Black Screen ALGAE INK | Substrate, mesh count, squeegee, flash and oven capacity, wash or rub requirements, and whether the appearance suits the design |
| Art and printmaking | Standard Screen ALGAE INK is documented as a printmaking material | Desired black tone, drying workflow, paper or plate compatibility, cleanup method, and whether a black-only palette is sufficient |
Choosing algae ink for packaging
Paper, board, and offset work
For paper bags, cartons, wraps, and other fiber packaging, begin by confirming whether the ink is intended for your offset, flexographic, or screen press. A “drop-in replacement” describes the role of the pigment system; it does not guarantee identical tack, viscosity, drying, dot gain, or rub performance on every press. Your converter should compare the algae ink with the carbon-black ink it replaces under the same impression, anilox or roller settings, drying conditions, and overprint varnish.
Ask for substrate-specific adhesion and resistance data. A coated board, uncoated kraft stock, and a paper label face can absorb and dry ink differently. Proof the darkest solids, fine type, reverses, barcodes, and any varnish or laminate that will be added later.

Plastic films and plastic containers
Available information documents use on some plastic substrates, but it does not establish universal adhesion across polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, PVC, or multilayer films. Treat “plastic compatible” as a starting point. Test the exact film, treatment level, ink laydown, and converting sequence. Include tape adhesion, rub or scuff testing, blocking checks during winding or stacking, and resistance to the product that the package will contain.
Labels and UV-curable flexographic production
ACTEGA describes ACTExact® UV Black Algae Ink as a UV-curable flexographic ink for packaging and labels that uses algae pigment. This can be a better process fit than a water-based product when your line requires immediate UV cure and high-speed converting. Confirm the anilox volume, plate material, lamp condition, line speed, and cure dose with the ink supplier and press manufacturer. A surface that feels dry is not proof of full cure; verify cure by the supplier’s recommended test and by downstream adhesion and rub testing.

Food, cosmetic, and regulated packaging
The available product information does not establish food-contact, pharmaceutical-contact, or other regulatory approval. If the package is for food, cosmetics, medicine, or a child-related product, obtain a written compliance statement for the exact ink, substrate, and intended use. Also determine whether printing is on the non-contact side, whether migration through the substrate is possible, and whether an overprint coating changes the compliance assessment.
Choosing algae ink for screen printing
The two named screen products are both water-based black inks, but they are intended to produce different visual results and have different mesh guidance.

How to decide between Modern Black and Vintage Black
- Choose Modern Black when the design calls for a dense, contemporary black and your screens fall within the 150–240 T/in guidance.
- Choose Vintage Black when a softer antique-black appearance is part of the design or when your production range requires the broader 110–320 T/in guidance.
- Ask whether the optional Fixator NFO is appropriate for your substrate and wash requirements. Modern Black’s built-in hardener does not mean you can skip the specified cure.
Screen-print setup checklist
- Confirm the substrate. Identify the exact fabric, paper, board, plastic, or other surface and note any coating, pretreatment, or stretch.
- Select mesh deliberately. Start within the product’s stated range, then adjust for detail, ink deposit, opacity, and the substrate’s texture. Record mesh count and thread diameter for repeat jobs.
- Set the squeegee and flood. Confirm squeegee hardness, angle, pressure, and flood stroke with a small proof. Excess pressure can reduce deposit and alter edge definition.
- Plan flash and oven capacity. Verify that intermediate flash units and the final oven can bring the ink film to 330°F (165°C) for a minimum of 90 seconds. The 120–180-second dwell guidance is process guidance, not permission to assume every conveyor reaches the same ink-film temperature.
- Print and test. Check opacity, pinholes, edge sharpness, hand feel, adhesion, crocking or rub, and wash fastness where the article will be laundered.
- Clean immediately. Water-based ink should be removed from screens and tools promptly with water and mild detergent. Dried ink is harder to remove and can permanently affect mesh.
Using algae ink for art and printmaking
Standard Screen ALGAE INK is documented as a printmaking material. It can suit an artist who wants an algae-derived black for screen-based editions, posters, or mixed-media work, provided the drying and cleanup workflow fits the studio.

Check the palette before you commit
The available evidence centers on black pigment. If your project depends on a full palette, transparent extenders, metallics, or color mixing, ask for a current color chart and compatibility information. Do not assume that a black screen ink can be mixed safely with unrelated water-based brands.

Paper sizing, absorbency, plate preparation, humidity, and drying time can change the appearance of a black. Make a small edition proof and inspect solid areas, fine lines, registration, show-through, and the final surface after drying. Record the paper lot, mesh, stencil, squeegee, ink ratio if modified, room conditions, and cure or drying method so the edition can be repeated.
Studio handling
Use the product’s water-based cleanup guidance, keep containers closed when not in use, and prevent freezing. The retailer pages specify storage from 41–89°F (5–32°C) and state a one-year unopened shelf life; confirm the date and lot on your container rather than relying on a generic estimate.
A step-by-step buying and testing workflow
1. Write a process brief
Record the press or screen method, substrate construction, expected production speed, ink film or opacity target, finishing steps, exposure to abrasion or washing, and required appearance. For packaging, note whether the printed surface is inside or outside the pack and whether it will contact food or product.
2. Request the current documents
Ask the supplier for the TDS, SDS, certificate information, storage and shelf-life statement, and any substrate or compliance declarations for the exact SKU. Confirm the document revision date and region. OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT appearing on a retailer page should be checked against the current certificate, not treated as permanent approval.

3. Compare operating requirements
Check carrier type, viscosity range, mesh or anilox guidance, hardener or fixator requirements, flash and final-cure settings, cleanup products, and minimum order or lead time. For UV flexographic work, add lamp intensity, line speed, and anilox volume to the comparison.
4. Run a controlled proof
Use the real substrate and production-representative settings. Print both solid and fine-detail patches. Measure or inspect adhesion, rub and scuff resistance, blocking, wash fastness where relevant, color consistency, opacity, cure, and cleanup. For labels, include die-cutting, rewinding, and application to the final container.
5. Approve the compliance path
For regulated packaging, have the responsible compliance team review migration, contact, recycling, and labeling requirements. The available product pages do not establish those approvals for your application.
6. Lock the repeatable process
Record supplier, exact product name, lot, storage temperature, substrate lot, mesh or anilox, squeegee, press speed, flash and oven settings, UV dose where applicable, and test results. Keep a retained proof with the production record.
Cure, storage, and cleanup requirements
For the documented Modern Black and Vintage Black screen products, the technical guidance specifies a minimum cure of 330°F (165°C) for 90 seconds, with 120–180 seconds of oven dwell guidance. Measure the ink film or substrate temperature when possible; conveyor time alone does not prove that the printed layer reached the required temperature.

Both pages call for prompt water-based cleanup and caution against freezing. Store containers between 41 and 89°F (5 and 32°C). The stated one-year shelf life applies to unopened product. If ink has thickened, separated, frozen, or developed an unusual odor, quarantine it and ask the supplier before attempting to restore it.
Troubleshooting common failures
Ink wipes or scratches off
Possible causes include an unsuitable or contaminated substrate, insufficient cure, excessive ink deposit, or inadequate surface treatment on plastic. Recheck substrate preparation and actual ink-film temperature, then repeat adhesion and rub tests. Do not solve a cure problem by simply adding hardener unless the product documentation permits it.
Print is too gray or lacks opacity
Check mesh selection, stencil thickness, squeegee pressure, flood stroke, and ink deposit. For a deliberate antique appearance, confirm that Vintage Black is the intended choice; do not increase pressure blindly, because that can blur detail while adding little useful coverage.
Fine detail fills in
Review mesh count, stencil resolution, ink viscosity, off-contact, and squeegee settings. The broad Vintage Black range does not mean every mesh is optimal for every image; match the screen to the detail and deposit required.
Ink dries in the screen
Pause to flood or cover the open image area as appropriate for your process, and clean promptly with water and mild detergent. Dried water-based ink can permanently reduce mesh openness.
Color varies between lots or runs
Keep the ink, substrate, and storage conditions consistent; mix or condition only as the TDS allows. Compare a retained proof, lot number, cure record, and substrate lot before changing the formulation.
UV package print remains tacky
For a UV-curable flexographic product, verify lamp output, lamp age, line speed, anilox deposit, and the supplier’s cure window. A tacky surface can indicate under-cure, excessive film thickness, or incompatibility with the substrate or overprint coating.
What the available evidence does not establish
- There is no verified universal price, regional stock position, or marketplace availability for the products.
- The documented information does not establish a complete algae-based color range.
- Food-contact or other regulated-use approvals are not established for a generic ALGAE INK label.
- No independent comparative life-cycle assessment supplies a numeric carbon reduction for the finished ink system.
- “Works on plastic” cannot be generalized to every resin, coating, treatment level, or package construction.
These gaps are reasons to request current supplier documentation and run a production-representative proof, not reasons to infer performance from the pigment’s origin.
