Start with the game’s age rating, then check the content descriptors, rating summary and online features. The rating is a useful first screen—not a complete verdict. A good choice also fits your child’s maturity and sensitivities, your family’s rules, and the controls available on the device or service they’ll use.
What a video game rating tells you
The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rating has three parts: an age category, content descriptors that explain material that may have influenced the rating, and interactive elements that flag features such as player interactions, in-game purchases, location sharing or unrestricted internet access. For physical games rated by ESRB, a Rating Summary can give additional detail. ESRB explains its rating categories and system.
Use all the information available, not just the age category. A rating cannot tell you whether a particular game’s humor, themes or online setup will work for your child or your household. ESRB describes its system as voluntary overall, although console manufacturers and some retailers and digital storefronts require ratings for products they offer. Participating digital storefronts may display ratings through IARC processes. ESRB’s parent tools explain where families can find ratings.

- For a physical game, look at the rating information on the box.
- For a digital game, check its listing in the storefront where you plan to buy or install it.
- Search ESRB’s rating database or app for the title’s category, descriptors and, where available, Rating Summary.
Check the exact title and version your child will play. Do not assume that a similar title or another game in the same franchise has the same rating or features.

A practical process for choosing a game
- Start with your child. Consider their age, maturity, sensitivities, gaming experience and interests. A rating category is a recommendation to consider, not a measure of every child’s readiness.
- Read the descriptors and summary. Look up why the game received its rating and decide whether the details fit your family’s boundaries.
- Check how the game connects with other people and services. Find out whether it includes online multiplayer, voice or text communication, purchases, location sharing or unrestricted internet access. Decide who your child may play with and what information they may share.
- Compare it with your household rules and available controls. Confirm that the device or service can apply the limits you want for ratings, time, spending and communication.
- Discuss the decision and revisit it. Explain your reasons, hear what appeals to your child and adjust permissions as their maturity and habits change.
Compare candidate games on the details that matter
If you are choosing between several games, compare them using the same questions. The rating alone may not distinguish two titles that differ substantially in online interaction or purchase features.
| What to compare | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Age category and descriptors | The rating category and the specific content descriptors shown for each title. | Shows the rating recommendation and the kinds of content that contributed to it. |
| Rating Summary | More detailed content information, when available for a physical game rated by ESRB. | Helps you judge whether the reasons behind the rating matter to your family. |
| Online play and communication | Multiplayer modes, communication with other players, and options for choosing who can interact. | Online interaction brings considerations that an on-screen content rating may not resolve. |
| Purchases and other interactive features | In-game purchase information and notices about features such as location sharing or unrestricted internet access. | Lets you decide whether additional spending or privacy-related features fit your rules. |
| Child and household fit | Your child’s interests, maturity and sensitivities, alongside family expectations. | The same rating may not lead to the same decision for every child or household. |
| Platform controls | Whether the relevant device or service can limit ratings, play time, spending or communication. | Controls can help enforce the rules you have chosen. |
Consider age guidance without treating it as a rulebook
ESRB’s Family Gaming Guide offers broad age-based prompts. They are guidance from the rating body, not universal developmental standards, legal requirements or a substitute for knowing your child.

- Ages ten to twelve: It highlights checking ratings, managing online communication and controlling purchases as gaming becomes more social.
- Ages thirteen to sixteen: It advises talking with children and gradually adjusting rules as maturity develops.

Make the decision a conversation
Tell your child what you checked and why a game is or is not a fit right now. Ask what they enjoy about it and how they expect to play, especially if friends or online communication are involved. Agree on practical rules for play, communication and purchases, then review them as your child gains experience. ESRB’s family guide also encourages ongoing conversation and age-based rules.

ESRB reports that Hart Research Associates found 83% of parents with children who play video games were aware of ESRB ratings, and 77% regularly checked them before buying a game in 2025. ESRB also reports that 45% of parents used platform-provided parental-control apps in the survey summarized on its page, compared with 31% in 2019; the page excerpt does not identify a publication year for that comparison. These figures describe reported awareness and use, not whether any specific game is suitable for a particular child. ESRB’s article on parental monitoring reports the survey figures and quotes its president, Patricia E. Vance, describing games as a growing avenue for communication, family bonding and stress relief; that is her organizational perspective, not an independent clinical finding.
