Choose aerogel only when it solves a specific building constraint. Aerogel blankets and sheets can deliver useful insulation where wall, roof, floor, reveal, or service space is unusually thin, an existing profile must be preserved, or an irregular retrofit is difficult to fill conventionally. They are not automatically the best or cheapest insulation. Select the exact product, then evaluate the complete assembly—substrate, moisture control, vapor movement, fire requirements, attachment, finish, code pathway, labor, and installed cost.
What aerogel insulation is—and when it makes sense
Aerogel is a highly porous solid used in several building-product forms. In construction, the practical choice is usually between a flexible blanket or sheet, a coating, or a composite product designed for a particular junction or finish. The word “aerogel” does not identify one uniform specification: products differ in fiber reinforcement, facing, binder, thickness, thermal data, fire classification, temperature limit, and approved installation.
The strongest case is a project in which ordinary insulation cannot be made thick enough without losing usable area, changing a historic elevation, moving windows or doors, reducing headroom, or disturbing services. Aspen Aerogels presents limited insulation space, building-physics challenges, and historic preservation as situations in which a thin blanket may help. Those are application claims for its products, not a universal ranking against every conventional insulation.

- Profile preservation: A historic interior or exterior surface may need to retain its existing proportions and details.
- Irregular geometry: A flexible sheet can sometimes follow curves, discontinuities, or small voids more readily than rigid boards, provided the chosen system permits that use.
- Targeted thermal bridges: A product may be considered at a junction where a small amount of high-performance material changes the detail, while the rest of the assembly uses another insulation.
If the project has generous cavity depth, a straightforward dry substrate, and cost is the controlling constraint, a conventional insulation system may be the more sensible starting point. The decision is about the whole assembly and the consequence of thickness—not about selecting the lowest published conductivity in isolation.

Understand the product forms before comparing them
Flexible blankets and sheets
A blanket or sheet is the most obvious aerogel format for renovation. Aspen Aerogels markets Spaceloft for constrained building applications, while ECOFINE describes Aerogel A2 as a silica-and-glass-fiber blanket or sheet for renovation and low-thickness insulation. Confirm the exact grade, thickness range, facing, intended substrate, finish, and attachment method before assuming that a blanket suitable for one detail can be used in another.
ECOFINE lists a declared thermal conductivity of 0.016 W/(m·K) for Aerogel A2. That figure belongs to that named product and its stated test conditions; it is not a rating for every aerogel blanket, nor is it the U-value of a finished wall. Real performance also depends on joints, compression, fasteners, adjacent materials, air leakage, thermal bridges, and workmanship.
Coatings
An aerogel coating is a different product category, with different thickness, application, drying, adhesion, and finish constraints. Cowin Materials presents a retrofit coating sample with a stated conductivity of 0.040 W/(m·K) and an added thermal resistance of 0.26 m²·K/W, citing report XT226-250016; the page was last reviewed on 2026-08-09. Those values describe the submitted sample and report context. They do not demonstrate that a thin coating alone can meet a whole-wall or whole-building target.
For a coating, ask for the target U-value, the existing wall build-up, the number of coats and dry thickness, primer and finish requirements, substrate preparation, climate, and a calculation or test for the complete assembly. A coating result should never be substituted for an enclosure calculation.
Thermal-bridge tapes, facings, and composite boards
Other products may combine aerogel with a tape, facing, board, or finish-integrated system. These can be relevant at narrow junctions, but suitability is product-specific. Require current technical documentation and system approvals rather than inferring performance from a blanket or coating data sheet.
Compare aerogel with conventional insulation on the same basis
The common question “How does aerogel compare with traditional insulation materials?” has no single answer. Compare options for the same building element, target performance, climate, exposure, and finish. A material conductivity value is only one input.
| Decision axis | Aerogel blanket or sheet | Aerogel coating | Conventional insulation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Added thickness | Often considered where the available thickness is very limited; verify the exact product thickness and detailing. | Applied in a thin layer, but the achieved resistance depends on dry thickness and the tested system. | May require more depth for the same target, but depth is often available in new or open construction. |
| Geometry and substrate | Flexible formats can suit some irregular or retrofit surfaces; substrate and fixing limits still apply. | Requires a sound, clean substrate and compatible primer, application, and finish. | Boards, batts, or loose-fill each have their own cavity, cutting, and support requirements. |
| Thermal evidence | Use the exact product’s declared conductivity and assembly calculation; Aerogel A2’s listed value is 0.016 W/(m·K). | Cowin’s cited sample is 0.040 W/(m·K) with 0.26 m²·K/W added resistance in its stated report context. | Use the selected material’s declared data and a complete assembly calculation under the relevant standard. |
| Moisture and drying | Hydrophobic material does not repair leaks or replace vapor and drainage design. | Water behavior, drying, and compatibility depend on the coating system and subsequent finishes. | Performance also depends on rain control, air control, vapor control, and drying potential. |
| Fire information | Spaceloft’s guide lists Euroclass C, s1, d0; confirm the exact grade and assembly. | Classification must come from the coating’s own documentation and installed configuration. | Classification varies by material, facing, thickness, and assembly. |
| Installation | May be cut and fitted, then attached by the approved adhesive, mechanical fixing, staples, or nails for the substrate. | Needs preparation, controlled application, curing, and compatible finish work. | Usually follows a more familiar cavity, board, or blown-in installation sequence. |
| Cost basis | Include material, cutting, attachment, detailing, access, and finishing—not only the blanket price. | Include preparation, primer, labor, drying time, finish, and any substrate repairs. | Include material and the labor and finish work required for the same target assembly. |
Do not use the two published conductivity figures as a direct head-to-head ranking: they refer to different products and forms. Likewise, do not treat the title of a U.S. Department of Energy project describing “R-10 per inch” for a clay-cellulose-silica nanopore insulation board as a general aerogel rating. That project covered development work from 2021–2024, not proof that a commercially available product achieved the figure or that it applies to a completed building assembly.

A step-by-step method for choosing aerogel
1. Define the building problem before naming a product
Write down the element you are changing: wall, roof, floor, window reveal, parapet, slab edge, pipe or service zone, or another thermal bridge. Record the existing layers and substrate, available added thickness, climate and weather exposure, moisture condition, target thermal performance, intended finish, fixing method, and applicable local requirements.
Cowin’s application guidance asks for the building area, existing substrate, climate exposure, thermal target, and moisture or waterproofing concerns. A broader retrofit assessment should also identify leaks, decay, hazardous materials, structural defects, and service locations. Building Science Corporation’s 2015 retrofit guide is focused on mineral-fiber strategies, so use its assessment principles as general enclosure context rather than as aerogel installation instructions.
2. Decide whether thickness is genuinely the constraint
Measure the space that can be added without blocking a door, reducing a stair or corridor, covering a window frame, moving a radiator, burying an electrical box, or violating a required clearance. Include the thickness of adhesives, battens, membranes, plasterboard, render, cladding, and finish—not just the insulation core.
If a conventional board or batt can meet the target within the measured allowance, it may offer a simpler code and cost pathway. Aerogel becomes more compelling when the alternative would require a major alteration or would visibly change a protected profile. Document that constraint so the specification has a clear reason for using a premium material.
3. Match the format to the geometry and finish
- Choose a blanket or sheet only when the exact product is approved for the substrate, curvature, thickness, and finish you need.
- Choose a coating only after confirming the required dry thickness, primer, application conditions, curing time, and finish compatibility.
- For a junction product, obtain a detail showing how it terminates, remains continuous, and connects to the surrounding insulation and air-control layers.
ECOFINE’s Aerogel A2 guidance says the material can be cut and drilled. It describes adhesive or mechanical attachment on brick or concrete and stapling or nailing on wood. These methods are not permission to use any fastener or adhesive: follow the current instructions for the selected grade, substrate, loading, and finish.
4. Compare declared data and the complete assembly
For every candidate, record the declared conductivity, test conditions, thickness, resistance at that thickness, density if provided, moisture and vapor properties, fire classification, temperature limits, attachment, finish compatibility, and any tested or calculated assembly result. Then calculate or commission the complete wall, roof, floor, or junction performance.
The basic relationship between conductivity, thickness, and resistance is useful for checking a data sheet, but it does not account for joints, fasteners, framing, air leakage, or thermal bridges. A product with an impressive laboratory value can underperform if the installation leaves gaps or if the surrounding assembly dominates heat flow.

5. Inspect and repair moisture problems first
Hydrophobicity means the material itself resists wetting; it does not make a leaking wall safe to enclose. Find and repair roof, plumbing, flashing, gutter, ground-water, and rain-penetration problems. Check the substrate for dampness, rot, corrosion, salts, mold, loose render, and contaminated or hazardous materials.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Then assess how the finished assembly will dry. Aspen Aerogels’ Spaceloft guidance calls for maintaining the vapor permeability of the completed solution and warns against unsuitable coatings. A new interior lining, adhesive, paint, membrane, or exterior render can change vapor movement even when the aerogel blanket is hydrophobic. Where the existing construction or climate makes drying uncertain, obtain a hygrothermal assessment before closing the assembly.
6. Verify fire, heat, and electrical requirements for the exact grade
The Spaceloft technical guide lists Euroclass C, s1, d0 and a 200 °C maximum operating temperature for the product covered by that guide. It also says national regulations must be followed near flues and heat-producing appliances and that cable derating should be considered where insulation restricts cooling.
ECOFINE lists EN 13501-1 class B/s1/d0 for Aerogel A2. The different classifications show why a rating cannot be transferred from one product to another. Neither classification means “fireproof,” and neither proves that a wall, roof, ceiling, or protected route meets an assembly requirement. Check the exact facing, thickness, installation, joints, coverings, and local code test or certification pathway.
7. Test a representative area
Before committing to a large retrofit, prepare a trial area using the actual substrate, primer, adhesive or mechanical fixing, aerogel product, boards or render, and final finish. Check adhesion, cutting, dust, flatness, corners, window and service junctions, curing, appearance, and whether the detail can be repaired without damaging adjacent work.
Cowin recommends surveying the substrate, making a representative trial area with the selected primer, coating, and finish, and reviewing applicable technical documents and local rules. A trial does not replace a thermal, moisture, or fire assessment; it exposes practical installation problems while they are still inexpensive to correct.
8. Obtain project-specific documents and sign-off
Request the current technical data sheet, installation instructions, safety information, fire and emissions documentation, test reports, assembly details, warranty conditions, and substrate limitations for the exact product. Ask the supplier to identify the edition and date of each document and the geography or standard to which it applies.

Use a trained building-envelope professional when the existing construction is uncertain, the building is historic, moisture is present, a fire compartment or escape route is involved, or the proposed detail affects structural or services coordination. There is no single aerogel specification that applies to every home, climate, or code system.
Moisture, vapor, and air control: the details that decide durability
Insulation reduces heat flow; it does not by itself provide a complete rain, air, or vapor-control layer. Draw the control layers across the entire detail and mark every interruption at windows, floors, roofs, corners, penetrations, fasteners, and changes in material. Decide where bulk water is stopped, where air leakage is controlled, where vapor resistance is located, and how accidental moisture can dry.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Interior retrofits deserve particular care. Adding insulation to the inside can make the original wall colder, moving the risk of condensation or freeze-thaw damage. Exterior retrofits can alter eaves, sills, flashings, cladding, and historic appearance. A narrow aerogel layer may solve the thickness problem but still fail if the surrounding junctions remain uninsulated or leaky.
For coatings, verify that the substrate can accept the system and that later paint, wallpaper, render, or tile will not block the intended drying path. For blankets, check compression, edge sealing, overlap or butt-joint treatment, and the finish’s vapor resistance. Follow the manufacturer’s stated limits rather than assuming that “water-repellent” permits any enclosure.

Cost, disruption, and payback
No current, representative, independently comparable installed-price or payback statistic is established for aerogel building projects in the available evidence. Do not treat an old internet price or a material-only quote as a current project budget. The U.S. Department of Energy describes high-cost pressurized, batch drying of large amounts of solvent from weak gel as a manufacturing challenge for aerogel-based building insulation; that statement explains a processing issue, not a retail price.
Build the comparison around the completed work:
- survey, design, calculations, and professional review;
- substrate cleaning, drying, leveling, leak repair, or hazardous-material handling;
- aerogel material, waste, cutting, overlaps, and delivery;
- adhesive, fasteners, battens, membranes, primers, boards, render, paint, and other system components;
- access, protection, temporary relocation of services, and disruption to occupants;
- labor for fitting difficult corners, reveals, penetrations, and transitions;
- testing, inspection, certification, and remedial work if the trial area fails.
Compare that total with the total cost of a conventional solution that achieves the same target and finish. If the aerogel option preserves a historic interior, avoids moving a window, or prevents a larger structural alteration, its value may come from avoided work rather than from energy payback alone. Energy savings depend on climate, area, heating system, occupancy, airtightness, and the actual assembly, so a universal payback period would be misleading.

Using conductivity as the finished-wall U-value
Conductivity describes heat flow through a material under stated conditions. The building result includes thickness, framing, joints, fasteners, air movement, thermal bridges, and every adjacent layer. Require an assembly calculation or test for the actual detail.
Assuming hydrophobic means moisture-proof
Repair leaks, inspect the substrate, design drainage and vapor control, and preserve drying. Do not close a damp or decayed wall because the insulation is water-repellent.
Transferring a fire rating between products
Spaceloft’s C/s1/d0 and Aerogel A2’s B/s1/d0 are product-specific classifications. Check the exact grade, facing, thickness, coverings, and assembly evidence.
Ignoring finish and attachment thickness
Adhesive, fixings, service battens, plasterboard, render, and cladding can consume the space you thought was available. Draw the full build-up before ordering.

A specification checklist
- Building element and drawing reference.
- Existing layers, substrate condition, leaks, decay, services, and hazardous-material findings.
- Maximum added thickness, including all finishes and fixings.
- Climate, wind-driven rain, ground exposure, interior humidity, and temperature range.
- Target U-value or resistance for the complete assembly, with calculation method.
- Exact aerogel product, grade, thickness, facing, declared conductivity, and test conditions.
- Moisture, vapor, air-control, drainage, and drying strategy.
- Fire classification, smoke and droplet class, temperature limit, and assembly evidence.
- Attachment, primer, adhesive, fastener, overlap, joint, edge, and penetration details.
- Finish compatibility, appearance, maintenance, repair, and access requirements.
- Electrical cable derating and clearances from heat-producing equipment.
- Trial-area results and acceptance criteria.
- Material, labor, access, disruption, certification, and contingency costs.
- Current manufacturer documents and approval by the responsible designer or building-control professional.
Bottom line: when aerogel is worth serious consideration
Aerogel merits a detailed option study when a real thickness, geometry, preservation, or access constraint makes ordinary insulation impractical. Start with the building problem, not the product name. Compare an aerogel blanket, sheet, or coating with a conventional assembly that meets the same thermal and code target; include moisture behavior, fire, finish, attachment, labor, disruption, and total installed cost. If the project has room for a simpler conventional system, aerogel may not justify its added complexity. If every millimeter matters, obtain exact product documents, test a representative detail, and have the complete assembly reviewed before specification.
