Choose a Windows 11 computer by verifying two separate things: the hardware must meet Microsoft’s requirements, and the installed Windows version and edition must still have a published servicing period ahead of it. A Windows support date covers operating-system updates; it does not promise that the computer maker will continue firmware, driver, repair or warranty service for the same length of time.
As of October 13, 2026, Microsoft lists Windows 11 version 26H2 as available from September 29, 2026. Home and Pro editions of 26H2 receive updates through October 10, 2028. Version 25H2 Home and Pro receive updates through October 12, 2027. Use the exact version and edition on the machine rather than assuming every Windows 11 PC has the same remaining life.
Start with the two dates that determine operating-system coverage
Before comparing screens, processors or prices, identify the Windows release installed on the exact configuration you are considering. Microsoft publishes servicing dates by version and edition on its Windows 11 release information page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Windows 11 version | Edition covered by the listed date | Availability listed by Microsoft | End of updates | What the date means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 26H2 | Home and Pro | September 29, 2026 | October 10, 2028 | Microsoft’s listed end of updates for those editions; it is not a hardware-support promise. |
| 25H2 | Home and Pro | Not stated in the cited release entry | October 12, 2027 | Microsoft’s listed end of updates for those editions; a PC bought later may have less remaining coverage. |
These dates are specific to the editions shown. A listing that merely says “Windows 11” does not tell you which release is installed, whether the license is Home or Pro, or how much servicing time remains. Ask the seller for the version and edition, then confirm the date on Microsoft’s release page before buying.
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
Microsoft’s Windows 11 Home and Pro lifecycle page explains the lifecycle policy. Check both pages again when purchasing because a later release can have a different end date. The date is a planning reference, not a guarantee that every update will install automatically or that a specific application will remain compatible.
Verify the exact processor, not just the speed or core count
Windows 11 requires a compatible 64-bit processor. Microsoft maintains approved processor lists, so a processor’s clock speed, number of cores or marketing name alone does not establish eligibility. Two chips with similar specifications can have different support status.
What to record from a new-PC listing
- The complete processor model and suffix, including generation or series information.
- The amount of installed memory and whether the seller is describing the maximum upgrade capacity instead.
- The exact storage capacity and drive type.
- The Windows edition and release installed at shipment.
- The manufacturer’s model number or service tag, so support documentation applies to the same configuration.
Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements to check the processor against the current compatibility guidance. Do not accept a generic statement such as “Windows 11 ready” when the processor model is missing. If a listing gives only a family name, request the full model before paying; the family name may cover several supported and unsupported configurations.

How to check an existing PC
- Install or open Microsoft’s PC Health Check app.
- Run the Windows 11 eligibility check and read the reason for any failure rather than relying only on the pass/fail headline.
- Open Settings and go to System > About to record the processor model, installed RAM and Windows edition.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and note the installed Windows version and whether updates are being offered.
- Compare those details with Microsoft’s current requirements and servicing table before deciding whether to upgrade, replace or keep the PC.
For a used computer, ask the seller to show these screens or provide photographs of them. A reset, refurbished installation or replacement drive can change the Windows edition or release from what was originally advertised. Check the delivered unit, not only an archived product page.
Confirm TPM 2.0, UEFI and Secure Boot capability
Microsoft lists TPM version 2.0 and UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable among the minimum requirements. These are security and firmware capabilities, not optional accessories that can be assumed from a Windows 11 sticker.
Questions to ask about a new computer
- Does the exact model include TPM 2.0, and is it enabled in the shipping configuration?
- Does its firmware use UEFI and support Secure Boot?
- Can the manufacturer provide firmware updates for this model, and where are those updates published?
- Is the advertised Windows installation the same configuration that was tested for eligibility?
If a seller cannot answer, obtain the manufacturer’s technical specification or support page for the exact model. Avoid treating a product family’s general specification as proof for every processor, motherboard or regional configuration.
Why firmware support matters separately
TPM and Secure Boot establish Windows 11 eligibility at a point in time. Firmware updates can still matter for security, hardware compatibility and stability. Microsoft’s Windows lifecycle pages do not establish how long a particular computer maker will release firmware or drivers, so request that policy directly from the maker and save the model-specific link or documentation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →On an existing PC, TPM can be present but disabled, and Secure Boot can be supported but turned off. PC Health Check can identify an eligibility problem, while the manufacturer’s instructions explain whether a firmware setting can be changed safely. Do not change firmware settings casually: back up important data, follow the maker’s procedure and understand that boot or disk-encryption behavior can be affected.

Use the minimum requirements as a floor, not a target
Microsoft lists at least 4 GB of RAM and a storage device of at least 64 GB for Windows 11. Those figures establish eligibility, not a comfortable specification for every workload. Microsoft also notes that specific features and applications can require more.
| Component | Microsoft minimum | How to interpret it when buying | Evidence to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Processor | Compatible 64-bit processor | Check the exact model on Microsoft’s compatibility guidance; speed and core count are insufficient. | Full processor model and Microsoft eligibility result. |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | Treat 4 GB as an eligibility threshold. Choose more for multitasking, creative work, development tools or virtual machines. | Installed RAM, not only the maximum supported amount. |
| Storage | 64 GB | Treat 64 GB as a minimum. Windows updates, applications and personal files need usable free space. | Actual capacity and whether the drive can be replaced or expanded. |
| Firmware | UEFI, Secure Boot capable | Confirm the exact model’s firmware mode and Secure Boot capability. | Manufacturer specification or PC Health Check result. |
| Security module | TPM 2.0 | Confirm TPM 2.0 is present and enabled, not merely that the motherboard family supports it. | PC Health Check result or model-specific documentation. |
Choose capacity for the work you actually do
For ordinary browsing, office applications and video calls, buying substantially above the minimum leaves room for updates and several years of applications. Large photo libraries, video editing, engineering software, games, development environments and local virtual machines can consume storage and memory quickly. Select capacity based on those applications, then verify that the memory and storage are replaceable or expandable if the model’s design permits it.
A high-end processor does not compensate for insufficient memory or a nearly full drive. Conversely, extra memory cannot make an unsupported processor eligible. Evaluate each requirement independently. Also distinguish installed capacity from advertised maximum capacity: a machine may support an upgrade without including it, and a soldered component may not be replaceable even when a product family has a higher-end option.
Separate Windows servicing from the computer maker’s support life
The published dates above answer only when Microsoft stops providing updates for a particular Windows version and edition. They do not establish how long the manufacturer will provide BIOS or UEFI firmware, device drivers, parts, repairs, battery service or warranty coverage.
Request a model-specific commitment
- Firmware and driver update policy, including the final planned date or support period.
- Availability of security fixes for the exact model number and its processor configuration.
- Warranty duration, geographic coverage and repair or parts availability.
- Whether memory, storage, battery and other serviceable parts can be replaced.
- Instructions for obtaining firmware and driver packages after the original Windows release changes.
Do not substitute a brand-wide statement for the exact model’s documentation. If the maker will not state a period, describe the hardware support life as unknown rather than treating the Windows servicing date as a whole-device guarantee. A manufacturer’s warranty term is also not the same as a promise to publish firmware for that entire term, so ask about both.
A buying process that minimizes update surprises
- Define the workload. List the applications, number of browser tabs, external displays, storage needs and graphics tasks the computer must handle for its expected life.
- Filter for Windows eligibility. Reject listings that omit the full processor model, TPM 2.0 or UEFI/Secure Boot information.
- Record the shipped Windows release. Write down the version and edition, not just “Windows 11.”
- Calculate remaining servicing time. Compare that release and edition with Microsoft’s current end-of-updates table. A machine shipping with 26H2 Home or Pro has the date listed as October 10, 2028; one shipping with 25H2 Home or Pro has the date listed as October 12, 2027.
- Check manufacturer support. Use the exact model number to locate firmware, driver, warranty and repair information. Ask the maker to clarify anything missing.
- Check upgradeability. Confirm whether RAM, storage and the battery can be serviced, and price those upgrades before deciding that a low initial specification is good value.
- Save the evidence. Keep the specification sheet, model number, Windows edition and lifecycle date with your purchase records. Listings can change after the sale.
- Recheck after setup. Run PC Health Check, install available Windows updates, and verify that TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are active in the delivered configuration.
Do this comparison before judging price. A cheaper PC with 25H2 may have a shorter listed servicing runway than a similarly configured PC with 26H2, while a machine with more memory or replaceable storage may remain useful longer for your workload. Those are separate trade-offs; neither date alone proves which product is the better value.
How to assess an existing Windows 11 PC
If PC Health Check reports eligibility
Record the processor, RAM, storage, Windows edition and installed release. Then use Windows Update and Microsoft’s release information page to determine how long that specific release remains in servicing. If the hardware is adequate for your workload and the manufacturer still publishes firmware and drivers, keeping the PC can be more sensible than replacing it solely because a newer model exists.
If the check identifies a requirement failure
Read the specific failure. An unsupported processor is different from disabled TPM or Secure Boot. Firmware settings may be correctable, but changing them can affect boot configuration or disk encryption; follow the computer maker’s instructions and back up important data first. If the processor itself is not on Microsoft’s supported list, enabling a setting will not change that hardware limitation.

If updates are not appearing
Confirm the Windows version and edition, available storage and Windows Update status. A PC can be eligible for Windows 11 while running a release that is approaching its end date. Install offered updates before concluding that the computer has reached the end of support, and consult Microsoft’s release information for the current servicing status.
Common buying mistakes and the safer alternative
| Mistake | Why it fails | Safer alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing by CPU speed alone | Compatibility is based on the exact processor, not a single speed or core-count figure. | Verify the full model against Microsoft’s compatibility guidance. |
| Assuming every Windows 11 PC has the same support end date | Servicing dates vary by Windows version and edition. | Record the installed release and compare it with Microsoft’s table. |
| Buying at the 4 GB/64 GB minimum | Applications, updates and personal files can need more room and memory. | Size RAM and storage for the workload, with expansion in mind. |
| Trusting a generic “Windows 11 ready” label | The label may omit processor, TPM, Secure Boot or edition details. | Demand the exact configuration and run PC Health Check after delivery. |
| Equating Microsoft support with manufacturer support | Operating-system servicing does not promise firmware, drivers, repairs or parts. | Obtain a model-specific manufacturer commitment. |
| Ignoring the installed edition | Home and Pro can share a date in one release, while other editions may follow different policies. | Record the edition shown in Settings and use the matching lifecycle entry. |
| Comparing advertised maximums with another PC’s installed parts | A maximum upgrade capacity does not describe what ships in the box. | Compare installed RAM and storage, then verify the upgrade path separately. |
| Assuming a later Windows release is included automatically | A seller’s release and edition determine the servicing date you can verify at purchase. | Document the shipped release and check Windows Update after setup. |

Questions buyers commonly ask
Does meeting the minimum requirements guarantee updates for years?
No. Meeting the requirements establishes Windows 11 eligibility. You must still check the installed version and edition’s end-of-updates date, and the maker’s separate firmware and driver policy.
Is a faster processor automatically a safer long-term choice?
No. Speed and core count do not establish compatibility. Verify the exact processor on Microsoft’s approved guidance first, then choose performance appropriate to the workload.
What should I do if TPM 2.0 is missing from the health check?
Confirm the exact error and consult the manufacturer’s instructions. TPM may be present but disabled, or the system may genuinely lack version 2.0. Enabling a setting cannot make an unsupported processor eligible.
Can I rely on a retailer’s “Windows 11 ready” badge?
Not by itself. Request the processor model, installed RAM and storage, TPM status, Secure Boot capability, Windows edition and release, and the exact model number.
Does a Windows 11 license prove the manufacturer will provide drivers?
No. Microsoft’s lifecycle information covers Windows servicing. Ask the computer maker for model-specific firmware, driver, repair, parts and warranty details.
Which listed date applies to a PC with Home or Pro?
For the versions listed on October 13, 2026, Home and Pro 26H2 end on October 10, 2028, while Home and Pro 25H2 end on October 12, 2027. Verify the current table at purchase because releases and dates are version-specific.

What “updates for years” can honestly mean
For operating-system coverage, it means buying hardware that meets Microsoft’s requirements and selecting a Windows release with a known end-of-updates date well beyond your purchase date. On October 13, 2026, 26H2 Home and Pro provide the longer listed period, ending October 10, 2028, while 25H2 Home and Pro end on October 12, 2027.

For the whole computer, the claim is broader. It also depends on the maker continuing firmware and driver support, supplying repairs and parts, and maintaining a practical upgrade path. Those commitments must come from the manufacturer for the exact model; Microsoft’s Windows requirements and lifecycle dates cannot establish them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most important specification to verify first?
Check the complete processor model against Microsoft’s compatible-processor guidance. Clock speed and core count alone do not establish Windows 11 eligibility.
Are 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage enough for a long-term purchase?
They are Microsoft’s minimum eligibility figures, not a universal performance recommendation. Choose capacity for your applications, files and multitasking, and check whether upgrades are possible.
