The right washing machine is the one that fits your room and access route, handles the loads you actually wash, and offers useful cycles without wasting more water or energy than necessary. Measure the installation space and doorway first; then compare capacity, EnergyGuide estimates, ENERGY STAR status, efficiency metrics, cycle controls, and only the smart functions you will use.
This guide explains how to make that comparison across front-load, top-load, stacked, and all-in-one designs, while separating U.S. label information from model features that vary by country and exact model.
1. Measure the space before comparing features
A washer that cannot be delivered, connected, opened, or serviced in its intended location is the wrong washer regardless of its capacity or efficiency. Use the exact model specification sheet rather than relying on a product category’s typical dimensions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMeasure the room and the route
- Measure the available width, height, and depth at the proposed location. Record the narrowest point, including trim, shelving, baseboards, and pipes.
- Measure the route from the delivery entrance to the laundry area. Check exterior and interior doors, hallways, stairwells, turns, and elevator openings.
- Check the space needed to open a front door or raise a top lid. A machine can technically fit while remaining unusable if a wall, cabinet, dryer, or walkway blocks the opening.
- Locate the water supplies, drain, electrical outlet, and any gas or ventilation equipment nearby. Confirm that the model’s hose and cord arrangement can reach without sharp bends or unsafe extensions.
- Read the installation diagram for the required side, rear, top, and front clearances. These clearances can differ between models and may be needed for ventilation, vibration control, door swing, and service access.
Choose a configuration that suits the room
Side-by-side machines are straightforward to load and service but need two adjacent footprints. A stacked washer-and-dryer arrangement saves floor area but requires compatible dimensions and a supported stacking method. An all-in-one washer-dryer can reduce the number of appliances, although its dimensions, cycle behavior, and drying capacity must be checked for the exact model. Availability and dimensions vary by market.

- Reduce and Save: Energy savings includes Cold Clean which cleans gently & completely while using up to 90% less energy (when compared to the normal cycle, default settings, 8-lb load)
Do not assume that a machine advertised as stackable will work with any dryer. Verify the approved pairing, stacking kit, and total height before ordering. Leave enough space to operate controls, remove filters or dispensers, and pull the appliance forward for maintenance when the installation instructions require it.
2. Match capacity to your laundry pattern
Capacity is a drum rating, not a household-size rule
Capacity is normally expressed in cubic feet and describes the drum volume. It does not prescribe a universal number of people per machine. Two households with the same headcount may have very different laundry needs because of work uniforms, sports gear, bedding, infant clothing, or how often they run loads.
Start with your actual pattern: how many loads you run in a typical week, whether you wait for full loads, and how often you wash bulky items. A larger drum can reduce the number of cycles for large households or frequent bedding, but it can also take more room and make small loads less convenient. A smaller drum may suit someone who washes frequently and rarely handles bulky items.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use a simple capacity decision test
| Your laundry pattern | Capacity question to ask |
|---|---|
| Frequent small loads | Will the drum let you wash efficiently without waiting several days to fill it? |
| Infrequent, full loads | Can it hold your usual week’s clothing without overpacking? |
| Sheets, comforters, or towels | Does the manufacturer identify the model as suitable for the largest item you wash, with room for proper movement? |
| Mixed clothing and workwear | Will the capacity accommodate the heaviest routine load while preserving space for the selected cycle? |
Never pack the drum tightly just because an item technically fits. Clothes need room to move through water and detergent. Follow the manual’s loading guidance, and treat any stated maximum as a limit rather than a target for every cycle.
Interpret manufacturer examples carefully
Capacity-to-garment examples published by manufacturers are illustrations, not a cross-brand sizing standard. LG’s buying guidance notes that its examples are based on a cotton cycle and can differ on other cycles. Use such examples to visualize a drum, then compare your own loads and the exact model’s manual.
3. Compare front-load, top-load, stacked, and all-in-one designs
| Configuration | Potential fit | Checks before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Front-load washer | Useful where a dryer can be placed beside or above it and where the front door can open fully. | Door swing, clearance in front, access to the gasket and dispenser, and whether the door can be reversed if the model supports it. |
| Top-load washer | Convenient when standing access is preferred and there is room above the machine. | Lid opening beneath shelves or cabinets, reach into the bottom of the drum, and the available installation height. |
| Stacked pair | Saves floor area by using vertical space. | Approved washer-dryer pairing, stacking hardware, total height, ceiling clearance, and safe delivery route. |
| All-in-one washer-dryer | Reduces the number of separate appliances and may suit a compact laundry area. | Washer and drying capacities, cycle duration, venting or drain requirements, and the exact market’s available programs. |
These categories describe physical arrangements, not a guarantee of cleaning performance. Compare the particular models on capacity, cycles, efficiency labels, controls, and service requirements.
4. Read energy and water information correctly
Use EnergyGuide for like-for-like cost comparisons
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s yellow EnergyGuide label estimates annual energy use and operating cost. Compare models of similar type and size, because an estimate is most useful when the appliances perform the same basic job. Your actual bill will depend on utility rates, incoming-water temperature, cycle selection, load size, and usage.

Recognize ENERGY STAR as a separate qualification
ENERGY STAR certification is distinct from the EnergyGuide estimate. ENERGY STAR states that certified clothes washers use about 20% less energy and about 30% less water than regular washers. The program also reports that a full-sized certified washer uses about 14 gallons per load compared with 20 gallons for a standard machine. These are program-level comparisons, not a promise for every model or household.
ENERGY STAR estimates that an average American family runs about 300 loads of laundry per year and that a certified washer can save about $530 in energy costs over its lifetime. The figures were presented by ENERGY STAR on the consumer information available in 2026; they are estimates, and individual savings vary with use and local rates.
Understand IMEF and IWF
When the values are available, use the Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF) and Integrated Water Factor (IWF) to compare efficiency more precisely. IMEF accounts for washer-cycle and standby energy, water-heating energy, and the energy needed to run the dryer; a higher IMEF indicates greater efficiency. IWF measures gallons of water consumed per cubic foot of capacity; a lower IWF indicates greater water efficiency. These metrics may not appear on the EnergyGuide label.
An ENERGY STAR criteria page accessed for this guide lists the following thresholds under criteria changed April 22, 2021. Because requirements can change, verify the live ENERGY STAR criteria and product finder before treating these numbers as current qualification rules.
Recommended Free Tools
| Washer category in the listed criteria | IMEF threshold | IWF threshold |
|---|---|---|
| Front-load, more than 2.5 cubic feet | At least 2.76 | No more than 3.2 |
| Top-load, more than 2.5 cubic feet | At least 2.06 | No more than 4.3 |
| Residential washer, 2.5 cubic feet or less | At least 2.07 | No more than 4.2 |
The separate 2025 ENERGY STAR Most Efficient document was released in September 2024 for the 2025 recognition period and added requirements beyond ordinary certification, including energy, water, and cleaning-score thresholds. Do not present that year-specific recognition as a 2026 designation.
Reduce consumption through operation
- Run full loads when practical. ENERGY STAR notes that washers use about the same energy regardless of load size, so several very small loads can waste resources.
- Use cold water for most routine loads when the care label permits. Heating water is a major share of washing energy.
- Use warmer water temporarily for oily stains or when household members are sick only when garment labels and machine guidance allow it.
- Choose a cycle that is long or intensive enough for the soil instead of routinely repeating an unsuitable short cycle.
5. Choose cycles for the clothes and soil you actually wash
Start with care labels
Clothing care labels are the first constraint. Match water temperature, agitation or tumbling, spin intensity, and drying instructions to the garment. A cycle name does not have the same behavior across brands, so read the manual’s description of each program rather than assuming that a setting called “normal,” “delicate,” or “quick” is standardized.
Map your recurring loads
- Everyday clothing: Look for a general cycle with adjustable temperature, spin, and soil options that matches your normal fabrics.
- Delicate or lightly structured garments: Confirm that the washer offers gentler movement and a lower-spin option, and use a mesh bag when the garment instructions call for it.
- Heavily soiled workwear or towels: Check for a cycle and temperature range that the fabric labels permit, plus a rinse or soak option if needed.
- Small urgent loads: A quick program can be useful, but verify its permitted load size and cleaning limitations.
- Bedding and bulky items: Confirm that the drum capacity and cycle are intended for the item; do not force an oversized article into a compact drum.
Prioritize understandable controls
A machine with many programs is not automatically better. You should be able to select temperature, spin, soil level, extra rinses, and delay functions without guessing what the setting changes. Check whether options are available together or mutually exclusive, and whether the panel displays a remaining-time estimate that adjusts during sensing.

- UltraFresh Vent System with OdorBlock: Helps eliminate excess moisture after each wash cycle, keeping your washer interior fresh between uses.
- Built-In WiFi with SmartHQ App Integration: Remotely control your washer from your phone—start, stop, monitor, and receive alerts anytime, anywhere.

Consider spin performance and drying time
ENERGY STAR says that a high or extended spin, when appropriate for the garment, can leave less moisture in the load and reduce dryer time. That can save downstream energy, but high spin can be unsuitable for some fabrics. Follow the care label and the washer’s guidance instead of using the highest setting by default.

Connected functions can make a washer easier to monitor, but they do not establish a universal cleaning advantage or guaranteed savings. Decide first whether you need the feature; then verify that the exact model supports it in your country.
| Smart function | What it can do | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Remote control or scheduling | Start, stop, or delay a cycle from a phone. | Whether remote start requires an on-machine confirmation, an account, a specific app, or an active internet connection. |
| Completion notifications | Alert you when a cycle finishes or when attention is needed. | Notification permissions, phone compatibility, and whether alerts work when the appliance is offline. |
| Diagnostics | Send status information or troubleshooting results to an app. | Which faults can be diagnosed remotely and when a service visit is still required. |
| Downloaded or custom cycles | Add presets beyond those shown on the physical control panel. | Storage limits, regional availability, account requirements, and whether downloaded cycles can be edited. |
| Washer-dryer coordination | Sync selections or communicate cycle information between compatible appliances. | Exact appliance compatibility and whether both products must use the same app or network. |
A U.S. buying guide from Samsung describes remote start, stopping or delaying cycles, downloaded presets, diagnostics, custom cycles, and washer-dryer synchronization. LG’s UK guide describes ThinQ remote operation, alerts, troubleshooting, and cycle downloads. These are manufacturer descriptions, not evidence that every model or market includes the functions. Confirm Wi-Fi bands, app support, account terms, software requirements, and any local restrictions before paying extra for connectivity.
7. Compare shortlisted models on one worksheet
Once you have two or three models that physically fit, record the same information for each. This prevents an attractive feature or a low headline price from hiding an installation problem.
| Comparison axis | Record for every model |
|---|---|
| Fit and installation | Exact width, height, depth, required clearances, delivery route, door or lid swing, hookups, and stacking or combination requirements. |
| Capacity and usage | Drum capacity, your normal load types, bulky-item needs, and how often you intend to run a cycle. |
| Energy and water | EnergyGuide annual energy use and cost, ENERGY STAR status, and IMEF and IWF when published. |
| Cycles and controls | Programs that match your fabrics and soils, adjustable temperature and spin, rinse options, delay controls, and panel clarity. |
| Smart functions | Remote operation, alerts, diagnostics, downloads, and the required app, account, Wi-Fi, and compatible appliances. |
| Ownership | Maintenance steps, cleaning access, service instructions, warranty terms, and whether installation or removal services are available in your area. |
Check the manufacturer’s current specification page and manual immediately before ordering. Capacity, dimensions, certification, app functions, prices, and availability can change by model, region, and production run.
8. Plan installation and routine care
Installation checks
- Use the manufacturer’s approved water hoses, drain arrangement, power connection, and stacking hardware.
- Place the machine on a stable, level surface and follow the leveling procedure before the first load.
- Confirm that the drain cannot siphon or pull loose during a high-spin cycle.
- After connection, run the manufacturer’s recommended test or initial cleaning program and inspect every connection for leaks.
- Keep the access route and service area clear so the appliance can be pulled out safely if a hose, filter, or pump needs attention.
Moisture and odor prevention
Follow the maintenance schedule in the manual. For a front-loader, leave the door ajar after use when the manufacturer permits it so moisture can evaporate, and wipe or clean the gasket as directed. Keep detergent and softener dispensers clean, use the specified amount of detergent, and run any recommended drum-cleaning program. Do not mix cleaning chemicals unless the manual explicitly allows it.
Safety and household use
Use the child-safety lock when appropriate, especially if the control panel can be reached by children. Do not bypass a door lock, overload the drum, or wash items that the care label excludes. If the machine moves, leaks, smells of burning, or repeatedly stops, stop using it and follow the troubleshooting and service instructions.

- [Product Usage Tips] 1. Don't overload. Overload may cause the motor to turn on overheating protection. 2. Balance the spinner to prevent it from losing balance, hitting the inner walls, stopping work. 3. If the machine doesn’t drain, check that the water hose is not clogged or bent, which may prevent the spinner from working properly. 4. Make sure the drain height is less than 45 inches.
9. Avoid common buying mistakes
Buying by household headcount alone
Headcount does not reveal load frequency, garment type, or bulky-item needs. Use your weekly laundry pattern and largest routine items instead.
Ignoring the door or lid
A depth measurement without swing or lid clearance is incomplete. Mark the opening on the floor with tape and verify that you can stand, load, and unload safely.
Comparing unlike efficiency numbers
Do not treat an EnergyGuide estimate, ENERGY STAR certification, IMEF, and IWF as interchangeable. Use the label estimate for comparable annual consumption and cost, certification as a separate qualification, and IMEF or IWF to interpret energy or water efficiency when the values are provided.
Assuming cycle names are standardized
Read the manual’s definitions. A named cycle can differ in temperature, time, movement, water level, and spin between models.
Paying for connectivity you will not use
If you do not need remote scheduling, notifications, diagnostics, or downloads, prioritize fit, capacity, useful cycles, efficiency, and serviceability instead. Connectivity also introduces account and network dependencies.
Using year-specific recognition as a permanent label
Most Efficient designations and criteria documents apply to stated recognition periods. Verify the current program status instead of carrying a previous year’s designation into a new purchase.
10. A practical buying sequence
- Measure the room, clearances, delivery route, hookups, and door or lid opening.
- Choose the physical configuration that fits the space: side-by-side, stacked, or all-in-one.
- Write down your real load pattern, largest routine item, and preferred laundry frequency.
- Filter models by capacity and confirm that the exact dimensions still fit.
- Compare EnergyGuide estimates among similar models and check ENERGY STAR status.
- Record IMEF and IWF when available, noting the applicable model category and current criteria.
- Shortlist cycles and options that match your fabrics, soils, temperatures, and spin needs.
- Decide whether smart functions justify their app, account, and Wi-Fi requirements.
- Read the installation and maintenance instructions, verify service availability, and recheck current specifications before purchase.
Following this order keeps a convenient feature from taking priority over the fundamentals: a safe installation, adequate capacity, suitable cycles, and transparent operating information.
