For most people entering the Stacks ecosystem, the practical starting point is to compare Leather and Xverse. Stacks’ official wallet materials describe both as free, self-custody wallets that support STX and BTC, and both can connect to a Ledger hardware wallet. The better choice depends on your device, the assets and transactions you need, the Stacks applications you use, and how you plan to protect your recovery phrase.

Do not treat a wallet’s general Stacks support as proof that every token, NFT, signing method, or application will work. Confirm the exact asset and action you need in the wallet’s current documentation and in the Stacks Connect compatibility information before moving funds.

What a Stacks wallet actually does

A Stacks wallet controls the keys that authorize transactions involving STX and other assets used on the Stacks network. In a self-custody wallet, the provider does not hold the keys for you. Instead, the wallet application helps you view balances, approve signatures, connect to decentralized applications, and send transactions while you remain responsible for the recovery phrase.

The application password or device PIN is not the same thing as the recovery phrase. A password or PIN normally unlocks the wallet application on one device. The recovery phrase is the backup that can restore control of the wallet. Anyone who obtains that phrase may be able to control the assets associated with it, so choosing a wallet also means choosing how you will create, store, and recover that backup.

Stacks’ official materials describe Leather and Xverse as the principal general-purpose choices, while the official directory also lists alternatives. Availability and features can change, so use the directory and each provider’s current documentation as a final check rather than relying on an old setup guide.

Leather and Xverse: the two main starting points

The Stacks Labs wallet guide presents Leather and Xverse as free, non-custodial wallets for STX and BTC. The directory lists different platform and feature combinations, so the table below is a starting comparison rather than a promise that every feature works in every version or on every device.

Wallet Devices and access listed by Stacks materials Functions listed Recovery phrase in the Stacks Labs guide Hardware support identified
Leather Browser extension and mobile options Application connections, buying and trading STX, stacking or pooling, non-custodial use 24 words Ledger integration
Xverse Mobile application and Chrome availability Buying, swapping and stacking, application connections, NFT viewing and trading, non-custodial use 12 words Ledger support

“Free” here refers to the wallet software described in the official guide. Network fees, asset purchase costs, application charges, or hardware costs are separate considerations. A wallet can be free to install while transactions still require fees on the relevant network.

Choose according to the device you will use every day

Browser-extension users

If you interact with Stacks applications from a desktop browser, check that the wallet offers an extension for the browser and operating system you actually use. Leather is listed with a browser extension, and Xverse is listed with Chrome availability. “Browser support” does not automatically mean that every browser, extension version, or application connection is supported, so verify the current installation path before importing or creating an account.

Mobile-first users

Both Leather and Xverse are represented in the official materials with mobile options. A mobile wallet may be the better fit if you approve transactions primarily from a phone, but confirm the current mobile operating-system listing and whether the Stacks application you need can connect to the mobile version. Desktop and mobile interfaces may expose different functions.

Mixed desktop and mobile use

Decide whether you want one wallet profile available on more than one device or separate accounts for different purposes. Before restoring a wallet on another device, make sure you are using the correct recovery phrase and the provider’s official application. Never type the phrase into a website, chat window, support form, or unverified application.

Match the wallet to your assets and transactions

STX and BTC

Both Leather and Xverse are described by Stacks Labs as supporting STX and BTC. That establishes a useful baseline, not universal support for every transaction type. Check whether the operation you intend to perform is supported in the exact wallet version you plan to use.

sBTC

The official sBTC information identifies Leather and Xverse as supported wallets. Its described flow starts with BTC held in a supported non-custodial wallet and uses a Stacks receiving address. Before proceeding, read the current sBTC instructions and verify which wallet, address type, and transaction step apply to your situation. Support for an sBTC flow should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every related application or asset is available in the wallet interface.

Tokens and NFTs

Stacks wallets may differ in how they display, transfer, or sign transactions for tokens and NFTs. Xverse is listed with NFT viewing and trading, while the provider-compatibility documentation records differences across token, NFT, transfer, and signing methods. If a particular token or collection matters to you, verify that asset specifically instead of inferring support from the wallet’s ability to hold STX.

  • This is what security feels like: Ledger touchscreen signers all come with a private, offline, PIN-protected backup, Ledger Recovery Key, to never lose access to your assets.

Stacking and pooling

Both wallets are listed with stacking-related functions, although the labels and available paths can differ. Confirm the current eligibility rules, minimums, lockups, payout process, and application requirements before committing STX. Wallet support alone does not establish that you qualify for a particular stacking or pooling program.

Check application compatibility before you commit funds

Wallet compatibility is feature-specific. Stacks Connect documentation shows that providers can differ in support for application calls, transfers, tokens, NFTs, and signing methods. Two wallets may both connect to Stacks while behaving differently when an application requests a contract call or a particular signature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this process for an application you depend on:

  1. Identify the exact action: connect, read a balance, transfer an asset, approve a contract call, mint an NFT, or sign a message.
  2. Check the application’s current wallet instructions and the Stacks Connect compatibility information for that action.
  3. Confirm whether the documented support applies to the browser extension, mobile application, or hardware-connected mode you intend to use.
  4. Review the transaction details in the wallet before approving. If the requested asset, recipient, or contract does not match your intention, reject the request and investigate.
  5. Keep a second wallet option in mind for applications that list provider-specific limitations. Do not move all of your assets until the required workflow works for you.

Compatibility tables describe supported methods, not a guarantee that an application is safe or that a transaction will produce a desired financial result. They answer whether a wallet can communicate with a method; they do not replace your review of the application and transaction.

Understand self-custody and recovery phrases

Why the phrase matters

In self-custody, the recovery phrase is the critical backup for the wallet. Losing the phrase can mean losing the ability to restore access after a device failure, while exposing it can let someone else take control. The Stacks Labs guide specifies 24 words for Leather and 12 words for Xverse; record the words exactly in the order shown by the wallet.

How to store it

Stacks Labs advises writing the phrase down privately and not storing it in screenshots, email, notes applications, or cloud storage. A durable offline record kept away from casual access is preferable to a digital copy that can be synchronized, backed up, or stolen. Do not photograph the phrase, paste it into a password manager unless you have deliberately accepted that risk, or send it to support.

Password versus recovery phrase

The password or PIN protects access to the wallet application on a device. It does not replace the recovery phrase. If you uninstall the application, lose the device, or need to restore the wallet elsewhere, the phrase is the information that matters. Test that your written backup is legible and complete before depositing significant assets, but do not enter it into an untrusted site merely to “test” it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide whether you need a Ledger hardware wallet

A Ledger device is optional. You can use Stacks with a software wallet without buying hardware. The official Stacks materials identify Ledger integration or support for Leather and Xverse, making hardware-backed key storage a possible factor for people who prefer to keep signing keys on a separate device.

Compatibility is not universal by implication. The cited materials do not establish support for every Ledger model, every asset, or every wallet feature. Before buying or connecting a device, verify all three parts of the combination: the current hardware model, the wallet version, and the exact Stacks asset or operation. A hardware connection may support basic transfers while lacking support for a particular application call or NFT workflow.

Hardware security also does not remove the need to protect the recovery phrase. Follow the wallet and hardware provider’s current backup instructions, confirm transaction details on the device when available, and treat unexpected signing prompts as a reason to stop.

When another wallet in the official directory makes sense

The Stacks wallet directory also presents Ryder, D’CENT, and Asigna, along with their own listed devices and features. Their presence in the directory means they are options to investigate; it does not establish that each one supports every STX, BTC, sBTC, token, NFT, application, or signing method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider an alternative when its documented platform or custody model matches a requirement that Leather or Xverse does not meet. For example, a user with a specific hardware or mobile preference may find a directory entry worth evaluating. Confirm the provider’s current asset list, application compatibility, recovery procedure, and official download location before transferring funds.

A practical wallet-selection workflow

1. Write down the jobs the wallet must perform

List the actions you expect to perform during the next few months: hold STX, hold BTC, use sBTC, stack or pool STX, connect to a named application, trade NFTs, transfer tokens, or sign messages. Separating required actions from “nice to have” features prevents a wallet’s marketing list from making the decision for you.

2. Identify your primary device

Choose desktop browser, mobile, or both. Record the browser and operating system you will use, then check the current official listing. If an application requires a browser extension, a mobile connection, or Chrome specifically, that requirement should be decisive.

3. Verify each asset

Check STX, BTC, sBTC, and every token or NFT you intend to use. Note whether the wallet can display the asset, receive it, send it, and connect it to the application that matters. These are separate capabilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Verify each transaction method

Look up the exact Stacks Connect method or application action involved. Pay attention to contract calls, token transfers, NFT operations, and message-signing requirements. A wallet that supports ordinary transfers may not support the method your application requests.

5. Choose your custody arrangement

Decide whether software-only self-custody is appropriate or whether you want optional Ledger support. Hardware adds a device to configure and maintain; it is not a prerequisite for using STX.

6. Obtain the software from the official path

Stacks Labs’ explicit advice is: “Only download from the official site.” Start at the wallet’s official site, follow its link to the app store or browser-extension listing, and confirm the developer before installing.

7. Create and back up the wallet privately

Write down the recovery phrase offline, verify the word order, and store the backup where other people and connected devices cannot access it. Do not put the phrase in screenshots, email, notes applications, or cloud storage.

Secure setup and operating habits

  • Use official download routes: begin at the provider’s official website and verify the publisher shown by the app store or extension marketplace.
  • Keep the phrase private: legitimate support will not need your recovery words.
  • Separate unlock credentials from the backup: use a strong device password or PIN, but remember that it cannot replace the phrase.
  • Inspect every approval: reject requests with an unfamiliar recipient, asset, contract, or signing method.
  • Track which account you are using: browser extensions and mobile wallets can contain more than one account, and an address copied from one account will not receive funds intended for another.
  • Recheck volatile details: wallet features, token support, app-store listings, and protocol instructions can change. Review the current provider and Stacks documentation before important transactions.

Common problems and how to diagnose them

The application does not show your wallet

Check whether you installed the correct extension or mobile version and whether the application supports that provider on your device. If the application lists a specific connection method, compare it with the current Stacks Connect compatibility information. Avoid installing an unofficial “helper” extension offered by a pop-up or message.

An asset is not displayed

First confirm that the wallet supports the exact asset and network. General STX support does not prove support for every token or NFT. Check the asset’s receiving address and the wallet’s current documentation before attempting another transfer.

A transaction method is unavailable

The missing option may reflect a provider-specific limitation rather than a problem with your account. Compare the requested call, transfer, token, NFT, or signing method with the compatibility documentation, then use a supported wallet only after verifying that the application and transaction are legitimate.

You lost access to a device

Restore the wallet only through the official application using the correct recovery phrase. Do not enter the phrase into a web form or give it to someone claiming to provide recovery help. After restoration, check that the account addresses match your records before moving funds.

You are asked for the recovery phrase during support

Stop. The phrase controls the wallet and should remain private. Close the conversation or page, obtain the provider’s contact route from its official site, and report the suspected impersonation if an official reporting channel is available.

How to keep the choice current

Wallet selection is not a one-time decision because software versions, device support, asset integrations, and application methods change. Recheck the official Stacks wallet directory and provider documentation after a major wallet update, before using a new application, and before connecting hardware. The June 21, 2026 Stacks Labs guide is useful for the stated recovery-phrase and general wallet distinctions, but current provider pages should control installation and feature decisions.

Keep a simple record of the wallet account addresses you use, the device on which each account is installed, and which applications have been authorized. Do not record the recovery phrase in that document. This separation makes it easier to identify the correct account after a reinstall without creating another copy of the secret.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision checklist

  • Does the wallet run on your primary browser, phone, or both?
  • Does it support every required asset, including any sBTC, token, or NFT use?
  • Does it support the exact application calls, transfers, and signing methods you need?
  • Are you comfortable managing a self-custody recovery phrase?
  • If you want hardware, is your specific Ledger model compatible with the wallet and operation?
  • Did you install from the official site and verify the developer?
  • Is the recovery phrase written privately and kept out of screenshots, email, notes, and cloud storage?

For a general Stacks starting point, compare Leather and Xverse against this checklist first. Move to another directory-listed wallet only when its documented device, custody, asset, or application support solves a requirement the principal choices do not.
