VSCodium uses Open VSX as its default extension gallery. That answers where a normal search is made, but it does not answer whether an extension will install, run, or be permitted in VSCodium. Check three things separately: whether the exact package is available, whether its license and marketplace terms allow your use, and whether its code supports VSCodium rather than requiring the Microsoft build of Visual Studio Code.
This guide gives you a repeatable way to make that decision, find alternatives when a listing is absent, and avoid treating a sideloaded VSIX as proof of compatibility.
What marketplace does VSCodium use?
VSCodium is configured to use the Open VSX Registry by default. VSCodium’s documentation states that its product.json is set up to use open-vsx.org as the extension gallery. In a standard installation, the Extensions view searches that registry rather than Microsoft’s extension marketplace.

The default can change with a product build or local configuration, so check the documentation for the VSCodium version you are deploying. A changed gallery setting affects where the client searches; it does not change an extension’s license, its code, or the product checks it performs.

Marketplace listing is only the first test
An extension can be visible in a registry and still fail in VSCodium. Publishers may declare support only for Microsoft products, use APIs that are not available in VSCodium, or add runtime checks for the official product identifier. Conversely, an extension that is not in Open VSX may still be obtainable from its maintainer as a VSIX, but that package must be checked just as carefully.
Use this distinction throughout your evaluation:
- Coverage: Is the exact publisher and extension identifier available through a registry or an official distribution route?
- Permission: Does the extension license and the marketplace’s terms permit installation and use with VSCodium?
- Technical compatibility: Does it support VSCodium’s product identity, APIs, operating systems, and required dependencies?
- Trust: Is the package obtained from the maintainer or another source you can verify?
- Version control: Can you receive updates, or pin the particular release your project needs?
A practical decision framework
Evaluate the extension in this order. It prevents you from spending time debugging a package that was never licensed or designed for your editor.
1. Identify the exact extension
In VSCodium, open the Extensions view and search for the full publisher name and extension name. Confirm the identifier, publisher account, icon, repository link shown in the listing, and release history. Do not select a similarly named fork merely because it appears first. Workspace recommendations and a colleague’s screenshot can refer to a different identifier.

2. Read the extension’s own requirements
Open the extension documentation and license from the publisher’s source. Look for supported products, minimum editor versions, operating-system requirements, native dependencies, and statements about remote or web use. A README that says “Visual Studio Code” may be using the name generically, but an explicit product check or a requirement for a proprietary service is a warning that the extension may not run in VSCodium.
License language matters independently of whether the package technically installs. VSCodium documents that some extensions have license restrictions or code checks limiting them to Microsoft products. Installation success is therefore not evidence that your use is authorized.

3. Consult VSCodium’s compatibility information
VSCodium maintains a compatibility page with examples of extensions or categories that it considers incompatible. The current examples include C/C++, LaTeX Workshop, Live Share, Python, and several Remote Development extensions. Such lists can change as publishers update their packages, so treat them as a current check rather than a permanent classification.
Compare the listed limitation with your use case. An extension may be unusable for local development but workable in another mode, or a feature may fail while the editor itself continues to start. Note the specific capability you need instead of asking only whether the extension “works.”
4. Test in a disposable profile
Before adding a questionable package to a team image, create a clean VSCodium profile or use a non-production installation. Install the exact version, reload the window, and exercise the feature that matters: indexing a real project, launching a debugger, opening a remote connection, or running the language server. Check the Output panel and the extension’s log channel for product-check, activation, dependency, or license errors.
A clean test separates extension failures from settings, conflicting extensions, stale caches, and project-specific configuration. Keep a record of the VSCodium version, extension version, operating system, and the observed error so another developer can reproduce it.
How to choose among distribution routes
No single gallery is best for every extension. Choose the route that satisfies your legal, technical, and operational requirements.

VSCodium does not publish a quantitative ranking of catalog size or update quality for these routes. Avoid choosing on an assumed percentage of coverage. The extension you actually need, its terms, and its implementation are the deciding evidence.

What to do when an extension is missing
Ask the maintainer to publish on Open VSX
Find the publisher’s issue tracker or contact channel and request an Open VSX release. Include the exact extension identifier, your VSCodium version, and the reason the package is needed. A maintainer may already have an automated publishing workflow or may need to clarify licensing before publishing.
Request publication through the VSCodium project
VSCodium documents a route for requesting publication through a pull request to its repository. Follow the project’s current contribution instructions and provide the publisher’s canonical source, license information, and the package identifier. This is a request for distribution, not an endorsement of every feature; you still need to validate compatibility after publication.
Obtain an official VSIX
If the maintainer publishes releases from an official source repository or release page, download the intended VSIX there. Microsoft’s extension documentation also describes downloading a VSIX or a specific version. Prefer a release asset linked by the publisher, record its version, and avoid packages reposted by unknown accounts.

Sideloading changes how the package reaches your editor; it does not grant permission to use a restricted extension and does not remove product checks. Treat a VSIX as an alternative delivery mechanism, not as a compatibility certificate.
Compatibility examples and replacement paths
VSCodium’s compatibility guidance names several practical substitutions. These are project-listed options, not guarantees that every feature or workflow is identical.

C and C++ development
For C/C++ tasks, VSCodium points users toward clangd and Native Debug as alternatives to extensions that may be restricted or incompatible. Check compiler discovery, formatting behavior, debugger protocol support, and build-system integration in a representative project. A replacement that provides language intelligence may still require separate debugger or build tooling.
Python
VSCodium lists BasedPyright as a Python option. Compare the diagnostics, type-checking configuration, environment discovery, test integration, and formatter behavior with your current workflow. Recreate the project’s settings in a test profile before removing an existing extension.
Remote development
For some remote-development tasks, VSCodium lists Open Remote extensions. Verify the exact connection type you need, authentication method, server-side prerequisites, port forwarding, filesystem performance, and whether debugging or container features are included. “Remote” is not one feature: a replacement can support one transport while omitting another.
Other named examples
LaTeX Workshop, Live Share, and several Remote Development extensions appear among VSCodium’s examples of incompatibility. If one of these is essential, read the current compatibility entry and the publisher’s release notes before selecting a substitute. Do not infer that every extension in the same category has the same limitation.

VSCodium quotes the Microsoft Marketplace terms as follows: “Marketplace Offerings are intended for use only with Visual Studio Products and Services and you may only install and use Marketplace Offerings with Visual Studio Products and Services.” That wording is a material constraint for anyone considering a different gallery configuration or a downloaded VSIX.
Changing a gallery endpoint can make a listing visible, and installing a VSIX can make files available locally, but neither action changes the marketplace terms or the extension’s license. If the publisher restricts use to Microsoft products, obtain legal or organizational guidance rather than assuming that a technical workaround is allowed.

Keep license review with the package you tested. A fork, older release, or replacement can have different terms from the original extension. Store the license notice and source URL with your internal software inventory when your organization requires provenance records.
Versioning, updates, and reproducibility
When automatic updates are desirable
Registry installation is convenient when you want routine fixes and security updates. Monitor release notes for breaking configuration changes, especially for language servers and remote tooling. Test updates in a non-production profile when the extension is part of a shared developer image.
When to pin a version
Pin a known-good version when a project depends on stable diagnostics, debugger behavior, or a specific protocol. A VSIX downloaded for a particular release can provide that reproducibility, but you must create your own update review process. Record the file name, extension identifier, version, source release, and date tested.

- Note the previous working version and the new version shown in the Extensions view.
- Read the extension’s release notes and inspect the Output panel for activation or dependency errors.
- Disable unrelated extensions and retry in a clean profile.
- If the publisher provides an older official VSIX, install that tested version and document the rollback.
- Report the failure with logs that do not contain secrets, then reassess when a fixed release is available.
Troubleshooting common symptoms
The extension does not appear in search
- Confirm that VSCodium is using its expected Open VSX gallery and that network or proxy settings permit access.
- Search the exact publisher and identifier, not only a display name.
- Check the publisher’s source repository or release page for an official VSIX.
- Ask for Open VSX publication or use the documented VSCodium publication-request route.
The package installs but will not activate
- Check the extension’s declared engine version against your VSCodium build.
- Read the extension host log for product-identity checks, missing dependencies, native-module errors, or unsupported operating systems.
- Disable competing extensions and retry in a clean profile.
- Review the publisher’s documentation for Microsoft-product requirements or a known VSCodium limitation.
A feature works locally but fails remotely
- Determine whether the extension runs on the local or remote extension host.
- Install required components on the correct side and verify server prerequisites.
- Test the exact remote transport and authentication method your team uses.
- Check whether VSCodium’s compatibility guidance identifies that remote category as incompatible.
The extension works after sideloading but updates stop
That behavior is expected when the package is installed outside the registry’s normal update path. Track releases manually, verify each new file’s source and version, and retest before replacing the pinned package.
A repeatable checklist for teams
- Write down the exact publisher, identifier, required feature, VSCodium version, and operating systems.
- Search Open VSX from VSCodium’s Extensions view and verify the listing identity.
- Read the extension license, documentation, supported-product notes, and dependencies.
- Check VSCodium’s current compatibility list for the extension or category.
- Install and exercise the feature in a clean profile.
- If absent or blocked, evaluate an official maintainer VSIX, a publication request, or a project-listed replacement.
- Before installation, verify package provenance, version, license, and update plan.
- Record the result, including known limitations, so other developers do not repeat an inconclusive test.
Bottom line: choose by evidence, not by catalog name
Start with Open VSX because it is VSCodium’s documented default. Then separate the questions that are often conflated: is the exact extension available, are you allowed to use it, and will its implementation run in VSCodium? If any answer is negative, use a maintainer-published VSIX, request Open VSX publication, or select a documented replacement only after checking its own terms and capabilities. Gallery switching and sideloading can change distribution; they cannot override licensing or make an incompatible extension compatible.
